Peter Kogler’s installation ‘NEXT’, Brussels

Visitors have been entranced ING Art Center’s exhibition spotlighting the work of multimedia artist Peter Kogler. Known for his dynamic use of various mediums, the Austrian artist applies twisting lines to mold an average space into a hypnotic world. Inspired by a combination of animation and architecture, Kogler’s exhibition is a culmination of his past and present work through art and video installations creating a surreal world in Brussels.

Using computer software, Kogler’s curvy and intersecting lines create a composition connecting the floor and ceiling, transforming the dimensions so the visitor has difficulty discerning a beginning from an end.  This is not only emblematic of Kogler’s artistic style that has evolved over his 30-year career, but also symbolic of societal changes.

By incorporating furniture and tangible items, Kogler gives a sense of stability in an otherwise mystifying space. Kogler also uses objects such as ants, a brain, and light bulb to create a metaphorical connection in the way individuals perceive an ever-changing world.

Viewing these installations is similar to staring at an optical illusion, but there is more to take away from this part of exhibit than just its trippy elements. Kogler constructs a red pointed finger as part of his exhibit, intending to encapsulate another underlying theme of next: the opportunity for individuals to be progressive, forward-thinking, and to continually strive to learn more.

Rather than becoming passive observers, individuals become immersed in the interactive space of the exhibit through video projections such as the labyrinth.

In addition to changing every nook and cranny on the inside, Kogler also employs his artistic style on the exterior by manipulating the LED lights to create an evening light show of ants crawling over the facade of the building.
