Charcoal pencil tryout, with a little compressed charcoal here and there… a fairly satisfying finish with room for improvement i.e. continue exploring to get the results I envision. The pics lack the tonal range and balance of the actual drawing, leaving mid tone areas too light and looking a touch patchy. Happy I am nonetheless.

I remember making a portrait drawing of this very same person around 40 yrs ago or so. When I handed it to her, she promptly picked up a pencil and added a pair of horns to it.

Keen to practice my quick drawing skills, I recently picked up some willow and vine charcoal and had a go. The idea was to start working directly and quickly without planning, using loose strokes and lots of movement, and not worrying about likeness and detail or getting it right. I quickly reached a stage where I was happy with the sketch, and should have left it there! I however continued to play, overworking the initial drawing, thereby losing the clean, decisive and raw effect that I had set out to achieve in the first place. My good old pastels from storage, all dusty, and still with bits from my first set of quality pastels, a gift which my grandfather brought back from Europe for little 11 year old me. I had no idea that I would later use them for high school artwork, and continue to use them well into the 90s. Much of my early commissioned and exhibition artwork was thanks to these.

When something you made for someone way back when, makes a reappearance at just the right moment in your lives. Coincidence?
