Well there’s a new Valdemar anthology out, so guess what the blog content is going to be for the next couple of weeks. Our new anthology is Anything With Nothing, and the first story is “A Herald’s Bag of Magic” by Phaedra Weldon. It’s your basic young man wants a life of magic and adventure, somebody with that life shows them the ordinary world is where the “real” magic is story. Overall just kind of okay, quality wise.

Of course this kind of moral kind of ignores the fact that going out and seeing the world takes time and money that a lot of people just don’t have. And they can’t find satisfaction or fulfillment in their jobs as people have to take what they can get just to get by rather than chasing their dreams, and doing that job well rarely benefits them in any way as they’ll see neither compensation nor appreciation. If someone faces disrespect and dismissal every day, would it be any wonder that they want to be Somebody? Plus having some kind of power is something very appealing to those who feel like they don’t have any in their lives. I can understand the desire for a special kind of friendship when one is lonely and has trouble connecting with others.

I won’t say this stock moral is completely worthless. It can help to see the beauty and value in the mundane little things and world around you. But the way it is often expressed can seem, to me at least, rather privileged.

Honestly? Absolutely none and I find myself sighing over it (if the book doesn't hook me in the first chapter, it's put down and never touched again :((. HOWEVER I've got a book in the mail called "Mabon Hollow" by Phaedra Weldon, an author I loved back in high school, I'm hoping I can sit down and give that a read.

Thankfully the next story is much better. It is “Of Ghosts and Stones and Snow” by Phaedra Weldon. This one has a Herald with the Gift of conjuring simple illusions, Reyes, taking over a theft case from another Herald. And it swiftly turns into one of those cases. One where everything seems to go wrong in a messy manner (literally, not figuratively, no murders here), almost nobody wants to talk because it involves a town’s worth of dirty laundry (figuratively this time), and his main witness, the victim, is absolutely positive that her late husband’s ghost is the one who stole from her. Should’ve called in the Heraldic Mystery Inc. for this one…

Anyway, I’m not well versed enough in the mystery genre to say if this is a good/fair one, but I enjoyed reading it well enough. And sometimes that’s all you can ask for.
