BLoG: Mastering the equipment in your hands

Heres some Photography101 for those willing to listen. As a Photographer, I trust my equipment to the fullest and it captures exactly what I wish to convey. Such equipment, like my Canon, have a shutter speed fast enough to freeze any action, on the run! Especially, when your chasing after an 18 month old just learning how to walk, run and find her balance. Interestingly enough, I don't always have my preferred camera with me and must rely on what I have in hand. So inadvertently, I find myself scrambling while attempting to zoom in on my phone while trying to capture those fleeting moments. It's practically impossible to get the shot I'm struggling to get.

As a Photographer, this can certainly drive me crazy. As time after time, the shutter speed is too slow when zoomed in and I miss the moment or picture all together. So what am I to do to get around this common issue or problem, one might ask? Well, what I have come to realize (through my struggles) with my cell phone camera is that I can simply capture photos while zoomed out with far more ease, not to mention the shutter speed is faster. What I have come to realize is the clarity on my phpne is far better than I anticipated. And when I go in and zoom into some images the results are quite good for the desired use of posting to the web. In staying zoomed out, I let the onboard camera do its job and relying on the 1.8F lens to do its job. After all that resolution is most times incredible. Remarkably, I can go back into my content later and zoom in simply to find a great capture or that smile I wanted or a fleeting moment quickly gone.

Long story short is (1) you must learn the capabilities of the equipment you are using. (2) You must trust your instincts as to when to depress the camera button when zoomed all the way out. What am I talking about? Well, here are 2 examples of when I chose to zoom all the way out in order for my shutter to capture fast enough. While zoomed all the way out I was trusting my equipment or camera to do what it was capable of doing and in doing so was able to get some special shots that would usually come out blurry or "after the fact" meaning the moment was missed. Considering how far back I was and how far back the subject seemed, the resolution is not too shabby! So Don't get stressed out the next time you think you missed a good shot, just zoom into your images and see the magic that can be found/captured in those zoomed out images. Work with your equipment/camera, not against it and let the magic of photography happen.
