Helping others to learn.

I've tapped into many forms of learning over the 27 years that I've been seriously into Photography.

Books, courses, paid subscriptions, one to one coaching and mentoring, YouTube videos, you name it and I've tried it (and still do use all of these methods to learn).

Everyone has their own style of learning and working out just how best you pick up and absorb information is really important.

I'm a pragmatic learner in the main, yet I'm a bit of a reflecter also.

I have to say, that the way I've learned most efficiently however, is when I have worked directly with a mentor.

I've had a few over the last ten years and I will always look to work with mentors that I feel the pull to work with and whom I see is excellent in the area of my photography that I want to improve.

When I wanted to learn studio lighting, I was fortunate to work with one of the Industry's best in the UK.

When I wanted to learn speedlites, advanced lightroom and more recently storytelling, I again, chose to work with one of the UK industry's best.

Why? Well, that way I get to massively accelerate my learning. It's a steep learning curve, but I am committed enough and prepared to put in the work to make the best of what that mentor has to offer me and I soak it up like a sponge. I practice, make mistakes, have my mentor put me on the right track, then practice what I've learned from those mistakes more and more.

The guys in the photos are my sons. They're of the mobile phone photo generation and so they have been learning how to take photos with an actual camera we with full manual control and interchangeable lenses.

I started learning from my Dad when I was about 20 yrs old on my first 35mm SLR, a Minolta x300. A brilliant camera by the way if you can get your hands on a good example.

So I am privileged to firstly have my boys start to appreciate high quality photography and secondly to be the one who gets to teach them.

This was a great Father and sons bonding session and they all managed to take some half decent photos.

All the shots I took here by the way, I shot on the Sony a6300 with a Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens and a Hoya circular polarising filter attached. The filter really helped to pop the colour.

The Sigma lens here BTW is an absolute steal and an amazing lens. I highly recommend it for the a6000 range of cameras.

If you’re wondering why the heck I have a vector instead of a photo as my main image today, read on! . . . 💫 I’m putting the final touches on my eBook Rule-of-Thirds: A Guide to Composition for Food Photography. Three years ago I had an inspiration to bring out a product that would help food bloggers and photographers figure out how to place their subjects within the frame in a way that followed the principles of composition. I visualized sharing the sketches I make when I map out my shoots, but didn’t know how to go about it. . . 💫 Portrait photographers have posing manuals. Why can’t food photographers have a posing manual of sorts? This is EXACTLY what my eBook is all about. In addition to an overview of the principles of composition and some case studies from my professional work, the guide features 42 templates that you can use as prompts for your own creativity. . . Along with suggestions for food, backgrounds, and props, (including how to place them), these templates will instantly help you take your photography to the next level.
