George Reeves' first appearance and take-off as Superman, from the feature film Superman and the Mole Men (1951).

This shot was re-used extensively throughout the first two seasons of the Adventures of Superman television series, which were filmed in black and white.

The best take-off ever, in my opinion, also from Superman and the Mole Men.

This utilized a wire harness that lifted Reeves out of the scene, and while clunky by today's standards, is still pretty darn neat. Unfortunately, early on, while filming the TV series, the wire harness broke and Reeves plummeted to the ground. He absolutely refused to use the harness ever again, so various stuntmen were used.

However, it was quite obvious that it wasn't Reeves' Superman flying. By the second season of the show the method was abandoned altogether, as was the use of stuntmen doubling for Reeves, who preferred to do his own stunts.
