1968. Un Anno
Architettura, arte, design, fotografia e moda dagli archivi dello CSAC dell’Università di Parma
a cura di  Francesca Zanella
Silvana Editoriale, Cinisello Balsamo 2021, 160 pagine, 500 illustrazioni,  24 x 28 cm, brossura con alette,  ISBN  9788836642403
euro 34,00

PIERO CASTIGLIONI
1954
The new lamp developed by Barrisol® is inspired by the X Triennale industrial design exhibition wich took place in Milan in 1954, 60 years ago. My uncles Achille e Piergiacomo Castiglioni, in collaboration with the architects Roberto Menghi, Marcello Nizzoli, Roberto Rosselli and Augusto Morello (curator), Michele Provinciali (graphist), Lorenzo Pepe (sculptor) and Mario Reggiani (pinter), created this exhibition’s laying out. 1954 was a very important year for Architecture and Industrial Design with the first International Congress organized. The specific lighting system created for this exhibition including the creation of huge canvas bells was my source of inspiration for the design of this new Barrisol® lamp, as a tribute to the Castiglioni brothers but not only. They were used at this time to create a huge “lighting ceiling”, to diffuse light without apparent shadow. This caracteristic is now possible thanks to the Barrisol® system which combines the technicity of a special metallic circle (aviable in 4 dimensions 80-120-160 or 200 cm) and high qualities of the Barrisol®, Blanc Venus membrane offering a perfect light diffusion with more than 0.5 light transmission coefficient. This new material replaces perfectly the original “coquille d’oeuf” color sheet, thanks to the integration of new generation LED. 1954 lamps offer an excellent light transmission and a perfect color rendering guaranteeing a remarkable economy of energy. The 1954 lamp can be installed in all interior spaces thanks to the 4 dimensions available.

IN THE BOOKSHOP: PROVOKATIONEN. Design Aus Italien (1982) Beautiful over-sized book published on the occasion of a special exhibition in Lower Saxony and Bremen in 1982 entitled “Provokationen. Design Aus Italien : Ein Mythos Geht Neue Wege”. Published more broadly as a softcover book in 1982, here is one of the very limited edition hardcover versions, produced in collaboration between the designers Andrea Branzi, Paola Navone, Mario Radice, Ettore Sottsass Jr. and Superstudio with Firma Abet Laminati in Turin, especially for the exhibition. Each of the limited hardcover copies is sandwiched between two pieces of actual laminate panels designed by the designers and produced by Abet Laminati. This particular copy features the work of Superstudio (front cover laminate) and Paola Navone (back cover laminate). A very collectable copy of an incredible, heavy Italian design book! Handsomely designed and profusely illustrated throughout with large black and white examples of the work of Enzo Mari, Sergio Asti, Gae Aulenti, Andrea Branzi, Superstudio, Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, Marco Zanuso, Roberto Arioli, Ettore Stottsass Jr., Emma Schweinberger Gismondi, Angelo Mangiarotti, Mario Bellini, Gio Ponti, Martine Bendin, Daniela Puppa, Antonia Astori de Ponte, Franco Mirenzi, Joe Colombo, Ennio Lucini, Elio Martinelli, Sottsass Associates, Alessandro Mendini, Franco Raggi, Studio Alchimia, Gaetano Pesce, Franco Mello, Guido Drocco, Studio 65, UFO, Jonathan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi, Aldo Rossi, Vico Magistretti, Achille Castiglioni, Sergio De Michiel, Paolo Nava, Mario Dell’Orto, Antonio Citterio, Anrea Bellosi, Richard Sapper, Bruno Munari, Anna Castelli Ferrieri, Giulietto Cacciari, Man Ray, Gigi Sabadin, Antonia Astori de Ponte, Mario Ceroli, Lucchino Oltrona Visconti, Michele De Lucchi, Michael Graves, Paolo Portoghesi, Stanley Tigerman, Oscar Tusquets, Robert Venturi, Kuzumasa Yamashita, and more. Fresco-Inspired Ceramic Slabs Transport You to Italy
The following post is brought to you by CEDIT. Our partners are hand-picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.
Italian ceramic firm CEDIT – Ceramiche d’Italia has been producing ceramics in Italy since the 1950s. They are known for innovative production techniques that rely on extensive material testing and design research. Yet, within the firm, there is also a strong commitment to the cultural legacy and artistic lexicon of Italy. Combine that with the company’s penchant for collaborating with some of the leading names in architecture, art and design and have something truly great. The list of collaborators is impressive: Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Bob Noorda, Sergio Asti, Giulio Confalonieri, Gino Marotta, Bruno Munari, Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, Mimmo Rotella, Ken Scott. This focus on collaboration has made CEDIT a unique example of creative avant garde and invention.
The brand, re-launched on the international stage in April 2016 by Florim, still retains that exquisitely hand-crafted feel paired with the latest technologies. It’s from that place of juxtaposition that CEDIT continued focus on collaboration shines.
As part of the rebirth of the brand, CEDIT launched the Archeologie collection, designed in collaboration with Italian painter Franco Guerzoni. Since the 1970s, Guerzoni’s work has focused on articulating his personal exploration of the world of archaeology. For this collaboration, he delved into the Italian fresco tradition. He was particularly captivated by the 18th century strappo technique of removing frescos from a plaster wall surface. Used by museums and cultural institutions, this is the least invasive way of separating a fresco from the wall it was painted on. The plaster layer with the fresco is carefully lifted, leaving only traces of the pigment behind. He calls it “a journey into the interior, revealing the experiences, memories, signs and symbols the wall has absorbed over the centuries.”
Throughout Italy these fresco remnants are visible in ancient Roman ruins and Renaissance villa walls. These vestiges of the past reminded Guerzoni of a book waiting to be opened. It was this fascination with the hidden stories in the layers of the walls of Italy that inspired the Archeologie collection.
For those of us not blessed with the architectural legacy of Italy, the Archeologie collection allows you to have a piece of that cultural heritage no matter where you are. The series of flat ceramic slabs is composed of complex backgrounds. The effect of the dense pigmentations and the layers of powdered colors and chalky materials give the feeling of the shadow of a fresco… of past memories… of old stories. These past recollections are made possible by the technological capability that the Florim group brought to the brand. An ability to create such large, yet high quality, ceramic slabs paved the way for a completely fresh approach to the architectural space. There is perhaps nothing more transportive than the way these Italian design traditions are paired with sophisticated modern production techniques. With walls like these, who needs a plane ticket?

Desk Companion: The Flos Lampadina Table Lamp
It's Sunday, and I've been essentially working all day at my desk with the exception of a quick walk to the coffee shop (where I happened to run into some old friends from NY). That's one of the reasons why I love LA so much — it's essentially an extended borough of NYC.
While I write this, the sun slowly sets as the sky turns to a hazy pale violet/ bluish tone, and the palm trees from outside my window suddenly become silhouettes. It's quiet, and the only thing I can hear at the moment is my computer and the constant, faint whirring of cars beyond the reservoir.
But I digress — this post is about a lamp I just ordered. Specifically for my desk. The Flos Lampadina Table Lamp caught my attention today while Christmas shopping on Amazon. Well, Merry early Christmas to me. I already own the  Flos Tab Lamp and love it, but I wanted a design with a slightly smaller footprint and dimmable. Upon receipt, perhaps I will do an unboxing vid.
A brief history on Flos:
FLOS was founded in 1962 are the Italian Lighting Specialists. The very same year FLOS began producing a number of lamps that were to become classics in Italian industrial design. These first lamps were Arco, Relemme, Toio and Taccia — all designed by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni. As a tangible proof of FLOS Lighting's timeless design and technical excellence, these lamps continue to be produced today.
You can check out the Flos Lampadina Table Lamp on Amazon.
