A Bigbadaboom Elephant in #Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa🇿🇦, just northwest of Johannesburg. Compared to the heavyweights like #Kruger National Park, Pilanesberg sees much less visitors. As usual in South Africa, you can also do a self-drive, which means you don't have to book a guided safari or tour; you can simply use your own or rented vehicle to drive into the park at your own pace and try and find its free-roaming animals in their natural habitat. The animals I saw on this one day trip were Giraffes, Elephant, Wildebeest/Gnu, Zebras, Rhinoceros, and lots of Impala Antelopes besides tons of birds and Fowl. Unfortunately didn't see any Cheeetah, Lions and Hyena, which are present in the park as well. Jenny photographing the waterbirds from Mankwe hide. What looks strange about this image you might ask? Well, for 27 years we have used only Nikon gear and this was the first time for us to use the Canon gear. We sold our Nikon gear in 2021 and decided to hire some photo gear for a 5-day trip to Pilanesberg. The camera hire shops have only basic Nikon gear for rental. If you want decent gear - mid to high end - then you are limited to Canon. We decided to use the Canon 300mm f2.8 lens plus 1.4x tele converter and a Canon 5D mk4 body. Some advice when renting gear - check it before you leave!!! The exposure wasn't working on the body - every image was underexposed by around 3 stops. I would dial in up to +3EV and/or spot meter but nothing worked. Thank God for Photoshop so I could rectify the images when we got home. We popped into Ratlhogo bird hide as Rain, the cheetah, was seen in the area with her two cubs the day before. We didn't see her but got rewarded with one of the 'ghosts of the Pilanesberg' a cape buffalo. These guys are more difficult to find in the Pilanesberg than leopards! We spent a few days in the Pilanesberg with our wonderful friend @cgordon74. The photography was challenging as the park was full of water! Usually, September is one of the driest months but we had unusual winter rains in Johannesburg and the NW so all the dams, from Ruighoek to Ratlhogo and Mankwe to Makorwane were filled to the brim with water!
