Bojnice Castle or "Castle of Spirits'🧞‍♂️ is a medieval castle in Bojnice, Slovakia🇸🇰. It is a Romanesque castle with some original Gothic and Renaissance elements built in the 12th century. Kościuszko Mound is one of Polish🇵🇱 Kraków's four memorial mounds, consisting of two prehistoric mounds, Krakus Mound and Wanda Mound, which are rumored to be the tombs🏛️ of legendary heroes🎖️ - and two modern ones, Piłsudski Mound and Kościuszko Mound. The founding ceremony of the Kościuszko Mound took place on 16 October 1820 to honor Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko🏅. The construction was financed by donations from Poles living in all territories of Poland under foreign occupation. Another beautiful castle complex🏛️ is located in the very centre of the city Cēsis in Latvia🇱🇻, where in a small area a number of uniquely different historical areas intertwine in a picturesque park area. One of the most mysterious monuments of pre-crusader times is Riekstu Hill🏞️, a ancient hillfort once inhabited by Vendi tribe – the cradle of present day Cēsis. Right next to Riekstu Hill the castle built by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword⚔️ and the Teutonic order🛡️ is located. The most beautiful castle I found in Estonia🇪🇪 is Kuressaare Castle (or Schloß Arensburg) on the island of Saaremaa in the Baltic Sea. It's considered one of the best preserved medieval fortifications🏛️ in Estonia. In the 1380s, the Teutonic Order🇩🇪 began its construction for the bishops of Ösel-Wieck. As the inhabitants of Saaremaa put up stiff resistance to foreign efforts to Christianise🕍 them, the castle was built as part of a wider effort by the crusaders🛡️ to gain control over the island. In 1559, Denmark-Norway🇩🇰🇧🇻 seized control over Saaremaa and Kuressaare castle. During this time, the fortifications were modernised. Following the Peace of Brömsebro, Saaremaa passed into Swedish🇸🇪 hands. Following the Great Northern War⚔️, Saaremaa and Kuressaare castle became a part of the Russian🇷🇺 Empire. In 1941, the castle was used as a stronghold by occupying Soviet forces, who executed 90 civilians on the castle yard. The subsequent Nazi invasion and occupation saw over 300 killed on the castle grounds. The castle itself is late Gothic in style, surrounded by simple walls. Here in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia🇪🇪, I really want to recommend the 'Lennusadam' or Seaplane Harbor; which is an old 8000sqm hangar for seaplanes repurposed as a museum for everything that has to do with water in Estonia. You can see historic rowing boats & boys, a WW1 seaplane hanging on the ceiling, as well as flak arms, that were used to protect Tallinn harbor in WW2. The star of the show is obviously the 1936 submarine 'Lembit' which can even be walked inside through its whole length; including torpedo bows, crew quarters, engine rooms and bridge. Totally fascinating! 😳🤟 There's also a flight simulator and a pool where people can sail miniature ships.Outside there are several ships moored to be viewed as well, like an early ice breaker. For everyone, who is interested in history, especially World War II, the Masuren Lake area, especially around Mamerki in Eastern Poland🇵🇱, could be interesting. Here, near the small town formerly known as Rastenburg was Hitler's Command Headquarter (Wolfsschanze or Wolf's Lair) for the Russia Feldzug, codenamed Operation Barbarossa. The bunkers here are one of the bulkiest & most gigantic ever built in a short time in 1941, able to withstand the heaviest aircraft bombs of its time. They were basically build like a box within a box🏦. At the beginning of your walkabout around that huge complex, you'll get an audio guide, that describes in detail, which bunker you're visiting, where the unsuccessful assassination attempt of Stauffenberg against Hitler took place and how the whole complex was finally destroyed in November 1944 by German Detonation Engineers (Zappers☄️), 2 days after Hitler got evacuated, when the Red Army advanced into Eastern Prussia🏞️. They also have in a separate nearby exhibition several vehicles & planes to visit, as well as the huge site of 30+ Bunkers of the OKH (Oberkommando des Heeres) in nearby Mamerki. The Castle🏛️ of the Teutonic Order🛡️ in Malbork (German: Ordensburg Marienburg) is a 13th-century Teutonic castle and fortress located near the town of Malbork, Poland🇵🇱. It is the largest castle in the world measured by land area and made of red brick stone🧱. It was originally constructed by the Teutonic Knights, a German Catholic religious order of crusaders. The castles main purpose was to strengthen the area following the Order's 1274 suppression of the Great Prussian Uprising of the Baltic tribes. It became the largest fortified Gothic building in Europe; with the outermost castle walls enclosing 21 ha (52 acres), four times that of Windsor Castle. The castle has several subdivisions and numerous layers of defensive walls. It consists of three separate castles - the High, Middle and Lower Castles, separated by multiple dry moats and towers. The castle once housed approximately 3,000 "brothers in arms"🤺. The river is the Nogat River, a sidearm of the Weichsel/Vistula. During the Thirty Years' War⚔️, in 1626 and 1629 Swedish forces occupied the castle. The castle was visited by Swedish kings👑 Gustav Adolf (in 1626) and Charles X Gustav (in 1656). In its mausoleum beneath the Chapel of St Anne, there are still 6 of the Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order buried in their tombs. Claude Monet painted🎨 many cliffs in the little town of Étretat🇨🇵. The nature with its special forms and the light are truly special here. My last destination here was the small town of Étretat, which houses this beautiful garden, that was planted first in 1903, inspired & influenced by the impressionist painter Claude Monet🎨.
