건축이 뭐 별거 있나.

- 서울을 가로지르는 한강의 북방에 있는 나의 동네. 태어나기는 강남에 있는 병원이었는데, 탯줄 끊은 이후로 한강 남쪽 근처는 가보지도 못했다. 실은 업무를 보지 않는 이상 부러 찾아가지도 않는다. 강남보다 강북이 더 좋고 편한 건 삼십 년을 훌쩍 넘긴 짬에서 나오는 ‘강북 바이브’ 때문일 터. 어쨌든 이 동네를 옮겨 다니며 사는 나에게 공간에 대한 기억은 ‘00빌라’ 때부터이다.

초등시절 만점을 받지 못했다는 이유로 혼이 날까봐 숨겨놨던 시험지를 들켜 도망 다니며 맞았던 집이자 찬 바람이 부는 계절에는 찹쌀떠억 메밀무욱 소리가 창틈을 비집고 들어오던 곳이었다. 한여름에는 101호, 102호 활짝 열린 대문 사이로 얼음 동동 띄운 커피믹스를 들고 드나들던 다정함이 있었고 빌라 입구에는 작은 공간이 있어서 온갖 종 류의 자전거와 씽씽카를 나란히 주차해두는 암묵적인 규칙이 지켜지던 집이었다.

그리고 몇 년 후에는 조경마저 훌륭한 신축 아파트에 살게 됐는데 지금은 파킨슨병으로 요양원에 계시는 할머니가, 당시에는 오로지 당신의 힘으로 걸어 다니며 함께 살았다는 것 외에 특별한 기억은 없다. 그리고 지금은 여전히 수유동에서 지어진 지 오래된 작은 주택에 살고 있다.

건축가는 공간을 다루는 사람이다. 그 공간에 머물 사람들을 생각하고 그 공간과 어우러질 또 다른 공간까지 아우른 다. 사실 내 주변에도 그런 사람이 있는데 다름 아닌 박호준 씨, 우리 아빠 되시겠다. 토요일 아침 늦잠이라도 잘라 치면 뚝딱거리는 소리에 눈이 떠지고 만다. 저 소리는 필시 마당에서 나는 소리로, 그가 또 무언가를 만들고 있다는 뜻. “엄마! 아빠 또 뭐 하는 거야?” 소리를 지르면 “몰라! 또 밥도 안 먹고 저러고 있다! 맨날 저렇게 밥을 다 식혀서 먹어요. 어휴”라는 대답이 돌아올 뿐이다.

느지막이 일어나 주말 아침의 필수 코스인 영화 소개 프로그램 보며 밥을 뜨려 할 때쯤, 다소 상기된 얼굴로 아빠가 들어온다. 손발을 씻고 아구구 소리를 내며 밥상에 앉으면 그때부터 현장 보고가 시작된다. 이번에 만드는 건 앞마 당과 뒷마당 사이의 ‘중문’인데, 목적은 ‘길고양이의 가택 침입 방지’란다. “저렇게 만들어 놓으면 아주 괜찮을 거야. 평소에는 열어두고, 밤에는 고리를 걸어 닫아두는 거지.” 건축가의 목소리에 넘치는 자신감이 묻어난다.

그러고 보니 며칠 전 마주친 까만 길고양이에 화들짝 놀라 우는소리를 했었는데 그게 클라이언트 미팅이었을 줄이 야. 설계도도 청사진도 없고 가위로 색색 테이프를 끊는 시공식도 없었지만, 건축은 이미 시작되었던 것이다. 하루에 끝날 것으로 예상했던 공사는 이틀 반이 걸렸다. 우리 집 건축가 취미가 바둑인데, 그 정이 깊어 어쩔 수 없었으리라. 공짜 시공이니 이 정도는 봐 드려야겠지.

가꾸목을 다루는 솜씨가 이정도였나 완성된 중문을 보자 나도 모르게 웃음이 났다. 아마 ‘푸하하하’ 웃었던 것 같 다. 푸하하하. 그 시절 조경마저도 훌륭했던 신축 아파트에 살 때보다 지금 사는 집에 더 큰 안식을 느끼는 이유는 아마도 나에게 딱맞는 방식으로 말을 걸어주는 건축가가 있기 때문인 것 같다. 심지어 같이 살고 있으니 더할 나위 없다. 우리 박 사장님 톱질하느라 고생하셨으니 오늘 저녁엔 삼겹살 한 근 사들고 들어가야겠다. 공간을 다루며 그 공간에 머물 사람들을 생각하고 그 공간과 어우러질 또 다른 공간까지 아우르는 것. 그래, 건축이 뭐 별거 있나. 이게 바로 건축이지.

Victo Ngai / Illustrator

The illustrator that i chosen in this week is Victo Ngai, a New York based illustrator from Hong Kong and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design and majored in illustration. Her career life is successful with lots of Awards, for examples, she got the FINALIST, Hugo Award Best Professional Artist in 2018, 2017 and The New York Times 20 Notable Op-Ed Art in 2010, 2012, 2013. Her had lots of experiences to cooperate with international company or publication, for example New York Times,Reader’s Digest, Hong Kong Airlines, Adidas, Apple, American Express and Head & Shoulders……etc. 

Victo keeps updating her event planning every month, also the portfolio is shown on her Personal Website in very detail. Clearly is for business considerations. The contents in her personal website also contained the new magazine’s interview and report, Q&A sessions about her creation and concepts.

Besides, she is a full-time illustrator with well - time management and work planning. She loves eating and traveling and GOT ( an TV drama Series ). There are many posts about these daily life topics are appeared twice a week (Especially, her Instagram has a lot of her holiday trips and book sharing posts). Moreover, she would upload all her illustration’s progressing onto her social platforms accounts( like instagram ), for skill sharing and concept explanations.  She has lots of social platform accounts and pages to sharing and promote herself. Although, most of them having similar contents, it could touch more people with different aspects or backgrounds. To compare with her personal website, these online platforms are more closer and “approachable” to the audiences and readers. Sometime, she would accept interviews with TV broadcast, Newspaper, Magazines or events, like CCTV interview for China, be the guest in Offset 2019, Dublin and UK Digital Artist magazine interview. She sharing her creation process or skills or tutorial in the interview

Plus, her working hours in each day around 5 hours normally or 7-12 hours (on busy day, heard form her guest talk in Hong Kong Business of Design Week 2017 and in Hong Kong Design Institution).

Victo cooperates with serval agencies for open commissions, such as WEPRESENT, Morgan Gaynin, Pinzle etc….. On the agency websites, we could see the portfolio and her past commission experiences. The commissions from New York Times, famous international companies or magazines, are all through Agency to accept. She said cooperated with agency could save time. “You don’t need to negotiate about the salary and illustration styles with your client. Your Agency will take care of it”, from her guest talk in Hong Kong Design Institute, 2017. She also said that all the things she have to take care just about the quality of illustration, and focusing on your own creations.

On the creation freedom aspect, Victo had said that her client gave her lots of space on it. The clients always gave some concept and keywords, then the rest of the details were her own creations. For example, New York Time would gave her the article and let herself design the compositions, colours, characters……everything.

According to the online resources and her personal website informations, Victo would not accept any unpaid jobs. She only have free online tutorial courses on Skillshare.com . Also, she had a online store for selling illustration prints and books.

Korean Schooling ‘Korean Schooling’ is a personal project that sort of happened by accident. I was invited to South Korea by a local magazine called ‘Pinzle’. When preparing my trip I made a big list of architecture to photograph. But one day I got a little lost in Seoul and ended up at a school playground — that’s when it all started.” - Andrés Gallardo Albajar, Photographer. Spanish photographer Andrés Gallardo Albajar’s ‘Korean Schooling’ captures the pastel-hued perfection of South Korean school buildings. The photographer spent six days exploring other schoolyards across Seoul and Busan, travelling by foot and taking pictures at as many new locations as possible. 당신의 온도 

-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 

돌이켜보면 내 성장에 영향을 준 사람들은 세상은 그리 호락호락한 게 아니라며 자신도 이해 못 하는 말을 하거나 내가 다 겪어봐서 안다고 한 번도 넘어져 보지 않은 척을 하는 이들이 아니라, 궂은 세파에 다친 마음을 가만 풀어놓으며 자신이 살고 있는 오늘의 이야기를 들려주던 사람들이다. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 

그렇게 그들은 내 삶의 굳은 땅 한가운데 틈을 내더니 자리를 만들고 또 어떤 비바람을 견디며 단단히 선 채로 ‘나 아직 여기 있다.’ 온몸의 지지를 보내주었다. 다정하고 낮은 목소리로 내 생활의 균열을 만들어 그 속에 느린 노래의 씨앗을 심어준 사람들. 어쩌면 매기는 그런 사람일지 모른다고 생각했다. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 

한 점의 그림을 그리기 위해 하늘을 우러러보며 비를 기다리고, 때때로 불어와 휘감는 바람에 큰 숨을 들이쉬는 계절을 감각하는 사람. 모든 걸 집어삼킬 무서운 기세로 살아도 모자라다 말하는 세상에서 매기와 같이 꽃잎을 세고 빛을 줍는 이가 묘사하고 기록하는 삶은 분명 우리에게 영감이 된다. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 

호프 자런은 그녀의 책 에서 “사람은 식물 같다. 빛을 향해 자란다는 의미에서 그렇다.”고 말했다. 자기 안의 식물성을 잠시 잃어버린 사람들에게 매기의 그림이 조금은 위로가 되었으면 한다. 그리고 그 속의 희미하나마 꺼지지 않았을 빛을 너무 늦지 않게 찾기를 두 손 모아 빌어본다. 이제 옷깃을 여미는 추위의 나날들이 계속될 예정이다. 따뜻한 음식, 다정한 대화, 근사한 그림과 함께 당신만의 온도로 계절을 만들어 가시기를.

한여름의 폴라로이드 - 카메라값은 얼마 되지 않는데, 필름 값이 만만치 않다. 폴라로이드는 배보다 배꼽이 더 큰 경우의 전형이다. 그러나 우리는 특별한 순간에 폴라로이드를 찾는다. 지극히 보통의 순간들도 그것으로 담고 나면 어쩌거나 각별해지곤 하니까. 손바닥만 한 필름에 갇힌 시간과 기억, 다시 돌아올 수 없으므로 더욱 아름다운 순간들. 톰 오구마의 그림은 폴라로이드 사진을 닮았다. 이런저런 짐을 치우고 먼지가 뽀얗게 앉은 작은 종이 상자를 꺼냈다. 야물게 덮여있는 뚜껑을 열면 제멋대로 쌓인 폴라로이드 필름이 수북한 모습을 드러낸다. 카드놀이를 하듯 앞뒤를 맞춰 바닥에 포물선을 그려 펼치고는 이유 없이 한 장을 뽑아 들었다. 검은색 네임펜으로 조그맣게 적은 그날의 글씨. 하얀 프레임 안의 너와 나는 일상의 눈으로 보던 것보다 더 선명한 표정으로 제법 활짝 웃고 있다. 경험이 있는 사람들은 알 것이다. 잘 찍힌 즉석 사진 특유의 진한 색감을. 봉인된 어제와 오늘 사이의 멋진 대비를. 도톰한 필름마다 참 많은 기억의 조각들이 팔랑거린다. 사람과 풍경, 사물과 날씨를 담아낸 톰 오구마의 시선은 마치 즉석에서 인화된 것처럼 선명하다. 그의 작품에는 누적된 시간이나 지나간 것들이 마치 생생한 오늘의 감각으로 살아있다. 잔잔한 물결의 움직임부터 이제 막 정오를 보낸 기차역 속 분주함까지. 멈춰있으나 멈춰있지 않은 것 같은 일상의 조각들이 모여있다. 그리고 우리는 늘 이러한 역설에 감동하고 만다. 그에게 이 나라의 구석구석을 소개해주고 싶어졌다. 짧은 여름 휴가의 동행이 되어달라고 청하고 싶어졌다. 통영의 짙푸른 바다나 제주의 사려니숲길, 순천만의 석양은 반드시 말해줄 것이다. 경주의 밤이나 한낮의 전주도 좋겠다. 광화문 광장의 뜨거움과 을지로 골목의 북적임은 또 어떠한가.

핀즐의 괄호

거장의 조건

키우치 타츠로의 그림을 싫어할 사람이 있을까. 이토록 담백하고 다정한 그의 시선을 외면하기란 쉽지 않은 일이다. 따뜻하고 사랑스러운 그의 그림을 보는 동안, 어느덧 우리는 그가 담아낸 누군가의 삶과 일상의 서사에 자연스럽게 귀 기울이고 있었다는 걸 알게 된다.

‘거장의 조건이 뭐라고 생각하느냐’ 묻는다면 ‘자신만의 말하기 방식을 가진 사람’이라고 대답하고 싶다. 그런 면에서 키우치 타츠로는 ‘말하지 않는 것이 말하는 방식이 된 거장’이다.

그의 그림은 조용하고, 작가는 말이 없다. 누구보다 공들여 그린 그림을 내놓고는 가만한 미소를 짓는다. 오히려 그림을 받아든 우리가 더 많은 생각과 말을 하게 된다. 그의 그림을 오래오래 들여다보면, 잊고 살던 기억이나 잊었다고 생각한 사람이 떠오른다.

그렇게 그는 우리의 지친 일상의 뒤편에 서 있다. 야근 후, 집으로 돌아오는 지하철에 탄 당신의 어깨를 툭툭 쳐 돌아보게 한 뒤, 그림으로 말을 건다. 가까운 휴일엔 아무런 약속없이 집안을 뒹굴뒹굴해보는 건 어떻겠냐고, 매일 마시는 쓰디쓴 커피 대신 5월의 딸기를 먹어보라고, 조금은 버거운 누군가와의 관계를 잠시 쉬어도 괜찮을 거라고.

‘거장이 조건이 뭐라고 생각하느냐’ 또 묻는다면 ‘일상의 힘을 믿고, 그 속의 특별함을 찾아낸 사람’이라고 말하고 싶다. 키우치 타츠로는 지극히 평범한 일상에서 취향을 만들고, 취향이 모인 특별한 하루를 그림으로 설계한 거장이다.

혹시 기억하는지 모르겠지만, 사실 우리는 모두 거장이었던 적이 있다. 의아해 마시길. 당신이 5살이 되던 해, 처음으로 색연필을 잡았던 순간이 그랬다. 60개월이라는 전 인생을 통틀어 역사적인 첫 점을 찍던 그 날이 그랬다.

공백을 자유로이 내지르는 선과 파격적인 색상, 뚜렷한 자기주장이 어우러지는 모든 순간. 누군가에게 보여주기 위한 게 아니라 오로지 내가 그리고 싶은 그림 하나로 당신은 누군가를 완벽히 감동하게 하고, 그들에게서 흠 없는 박수와 환호를 받았다. 그 시절 우리는 모두 그랬다.

그 어느 날 집 앞 문구점에 들러 도화지와 색연필을 사보는 건 어떨까. 하얀 종이 앞에 잠시 머뭇거리다 끝내 아무것도 그려내지 못한다 한들, 혹은 동그라미 그리려다 무심결에 세모를 그렸다 한들 무슨 상관인가. 아무래도 좋다.

당신만의 말하기 방식으로 당신의 일상을 그려가는 것일 테니. 지금이 잊고있던 거장의 기억을 소환할 때이다.

핀즐의 괄호

Monthly Artwork, Pinzle에 한 달에 한 번씩 글을 쓰게 되었다. 출근부터 퇴근까지를 제외한 나머지 시간에 쓰고 싶은 글을 쓸 수 있다니 정말 기쁜 일이다. 

욕망과 자유

미켈라 피키의 써클을 오랫동안 들여다보았다. 색의 규칙과 선의 자유가 매끄러운 틀 안에 갇혀 굳게 마감되어 있었다. 흥미로웠다. 위태롭게 폐쇄된 욕망 혹은 어떤 것으로도 침해되지 않을 온전한 욕망이라. 보는 이에 따라 느끼기 나름일 테지만, 대단한 힘의 결정이었다. 

폐쇄된 욕망을 위태롭다고 표현한 데에는 자전적인 이야기가 담겨있다. 나는 다양한 종류의 욕망을 능숙하게 다루지 못해 부끄러웠던 적이 많다. 무작정과 아무 말이 넘쳐나는 흑역사의 시절, 여전히 계속되고 있는 위태의 나날들. 자의든 타의든 억압은 늘 부자연스럽다. 

그래서 나는 일찌감치 자신의 욕망에 눈 뜬 사람들이 좋다. 그들은 타인이나 환경으로부터 잘 훼손되지 않는다. 온전히 자신으로 서 있다. 나혜석이나 전혜린, 오스카 와일드나 버지니아 울프, 에곤 실레나 피카소가 떠올랐다. 그러나 그들의 삶은 고달팠다. 세상의 평가로부터 투쟁해야 했다. 그 대신, 자유를 얻었다. 

욕망에 옳은 것과 그른 것이 있는지는 잘 모르겠다. 알아도 모른다 말하겠다. 그건 자기 기준에 따른다고 생각하기 때문이다. 그러나 삶의 파도에 부딪히고 씻겨 정제된 욕망은 주위를 감동하게 하는 열정으로 드러나고 생의 뜨거움으로 간직된다. 그렇지 않은 것들은 또 그대로 남는다. 욕망은 욕망의 주체가 정해놓은 경계를 넘나들며 흔적을 남긴다. 

함부로 드러나지 않는 것들이 있다. 보고 싶어도 볼 수 없는 그런 것들. 가느다란 선으로 시작해 구불거리는 덩어리가 되기까지 끝내 알아채지 못할 것들. 아마도 ‘욕망’은 그런 것이다. 그러니 좀 더 자신에 귀 기울여야 한다. 내 속에 희미하게나마 보이는 욕망의 선을 더듬거리고, 쥐어 흔들다보면 언젠가 자유의 포구에 가닿을지도 모른다. 

아니, 그렇다고 믿는다. 욕망의 경계에서 선을 넘은 자들은 언제나 자유의 기록을 남겼다.

그러나 우리가 여전히 아날로그에 감동하는 이유는 사람이 답이란 걸 알기 때문이다. #pinzle 은 디지털 시대에 가장 적합한 방법으로 그림을 통한 아날로그를 실천한다. 나는 한 달에 한 번 핀즐이 고심해 선정한 그림을 배달 받는다. 그 그림을 그린 사람의 이야기를 듣는다. 세상에는 자신의 목소리로 자신의 생각을 말하는 용감한 아티스트들이 많았다. 누군가에게 예술은 가난한 것, 또 누군가에게는 사치, 또 누군가에게는 용기일 터. 내게 핀즐의 그림은 냉혹한 현실을 살아내는 당신이 자랑스럽다는 위로이다.
