Replacing copper tubes with physical oxide (PEX)

Major remodeling projects often involve opening up walls, floors and ceilings, and this is a good time to inspect and, if necessary, replace old plumbing pipes. Water supply pipes are especially critical to inspect because they carry water under pressure, and the consequences of a major plumbing leak can be devastating. Replacing old pipes is a very common project that needs to be done in all homes sooner or later.

Turn off the water

Water supply lines are under pressure, and before you work on them, you need to turn off the water and drain the lines. There may be branch shutoff valves in your system that allow you to shut off the water to only the section of pipe that needs to be replaced, or you can close the main shutoff valve to shut off the water to the entire house during the time of the repair.

Cut off both ends of the bad copper pipe

Make sure the replacement area extends well beyond the corroded area at both ends. Cut the copper pipe at both ends of the section to be replaced using a copper pipe cutter. A mini pipe cutter is a handy tool for use in tight spaces.

Cut the supply branches of the fitting

If these branch connections were made with couplings or compression fittings instead of braze-weld fittings, cut them off with a wrench.

Deburr the cut ends of the copper pipe

Use a copper deburring tool to smooth the inside and outside of all cut copper tubing. Run the tool a few inches along the tube to make sure all corrosion has been removed.

Peder Jeppesen

Peder Jeppesen is a renowned Danish pipe maker, known for his handmade tobacco pipes of exceptional quality. His career began in the workshop of Erik Nørding, one of Denmark's best-known pipe makers. There, Jeppesen developed his skills and refined his techniques before later working for other well-known brands, such as Karl Erik.

Eventually, he founded his own brand, Neerup Pipes, under which he continues to produce unique pipes with distinctive designs to this day. Jeppesen's style is characterized by a combination of traditional Danish craftsmanship and innovative, often rustic or ornate finishes.

Lars Ivarsson (1944-2018): A legend lives on

Lars Ivarsson was a master pipemaker from Denmark who changed the world of pipes forever. Sadly, he died at age 73 on Feb. 11, 2018, but his impact can be seen in the details of every new handmade pipe created by an artisan pipemaker, whether in the United States, Japan, China, Russia, Germany, Greece or a dozen other countries around the world.

Now, a whole new category of classical pipes has been created. They include the blowfish, the brandy glass bowl and the smooth acorn with a dark, sandblasted shank. In addition, there are slight modifications of the classical shapes, such as the beveling or rounding the top of the bowl. It is incredible to realize that every one of these new classics came from Lars. The noted collector Richard Esserman believes that Lars’ greatest contribution was his creation of the gentle “S” curve where the shank meets the bowl. It certainly is one of his most imitated accomplishments. Along the same lines, he was the first to create the asymmetrical shank that is so prevalent today in artisan pipes.

On a personal level, Lars was brilliant, warm and very funny. He loved to laugh. He was fluent in four languages, and he was so intelligent that it seemed like he could learn a new language just by listening to a few conversations. He was a gourmet chef and a master knife-maker. Lars was a family man who was very close to his wife, Annette (pronounced “Annetta”); his daughters, Camilla and Nanna; and his four grandchildren.

Lars will be missed personally by those of us who knew him, but his presence will continue to be felt with each new pipe made in the 21st century by an artisan pipemaker. There is no going back.
