Replacing copper tubes with physical oxide (PEX)

Major remodeling projects often involve opening up walls, floors and ceilings, and this is a good time to inspect and, if necessary, replace old plumbing pipes. Water supply pipes are especially critical to inspect because they carry water under pressure, and the consequences of a major plumbing leak can be devastating. Replacing old pipes is a very common project that needs to be done in all homes sooner or later.

Turn off the water

Water supply lines are under pressure, and before you work on them, you need to turn off the water and drain the lines. There may be branch shutoff valves in your system that allow you to shut off the water to only the section of pipe that needs to be replaced, or you can close the main shutoff valve to shut off the water to the entire house during the time of the repair.

Cut off both ends of the bad copper pipe

Make sure the replacement area extends well beyond the corroded area at both ends. Cut the copper pipe at both ends of the section to be replaced using a copper pipe cutter. A mini pipe cutter is a handy tool for use in tight spaces.

Cut the supply branches of the fitting

If these branch connections were made with couplings or compression fittings instead of braze-weld fittings, cut them off with a wrench.

Deburr the cut ends of the copper pipe

Use a copper deburring tool to smooth the inside and outside of all cut copper tubing. Run the tool a few inches along the tube to make sure all corrosion has been removed.

We are right next to the bank of a slow-moving river. Just to our right, a footbridge crosses the river. It is made of wood, with concrete pylons and a steel frame. The wood is painted a reddish-brown to look like iron. On the far side of the river we see palm trees, and a golf course.
