ToA Theory 1 - Apollo's Waking Visions
First official theory post, here we go! :D
Alright. So. After rereading The Dark Prophecy, I started wondering about something. In TDP, Apollo experiences waking visions, where he conks out for a bit and has prophetic visions.
I found this interesting because, well...isn't Apollo supposed to be cut off from prophecy? With Python back in control of Delphi?
Because think about it. Python controls Delphi, the root of all earthly prophecy. This would include Dodona, Trophonius, Herophile, and Sibyl - sure, they aren't strictly connected to Delphi, but it's pretty heavily stated that Delphi just straight-up Makes The Future. It's prophecies are The Big Deal and you Should Listen.
Meanwhile the other Oracles seem more guiding and "beware!" instead of "this is how it's gonna be".
(sidenote: found out there are MORE oracles and I wanna know WHERE THEY ARE IN RRVERSE CANON because I want my boy Branchus okay??? Okay. Branchus's oracle was second only to Delphi let's give Apollo's first boyfriend the attention he deserves!)
So of course, like all great members of this fandom, I started thinking.
Let's do a little family history first. ;)
Buckle up. We go down a deep rabbit hole 😎
Apollo and Artemis are twins, born to Leto and Zeus. Zeus's parents are Kronos and Rhea. Leto's are Koios and Phoebe.
Rhea has connections to Dodona, as we learn in-series, but she doesn't really seem to be all that involved with prophecy.
Her siblings, meanwhile...ho ho ho, they are a WHOLE NOTHER STORY!
Let's start with Phoebe. Phoebe, like all first generation Titans, is the daughter of Gaea and Ouranos. She married her brother Koios. Her children consist of Asteria, Lelantos, and Leto. As well as Artemis and Apollo, her other two grandchildren are Hecate (Asteria) and Aura (Lelantos).
Her name means "bright" and is the root of Apollo's most famous epithet - Phoebus. She is often described as "golden-crowned" and is the Titan of bright intellect, the overseer of Earthly Prophecies, and is the second guardian of Delphi, after her sister Themis. She gifted Delphi to Apollo for his birthday after he defeated Python.
Classic grandmother move.
Anyway. There's a bit of Phoebe lore. Time for her elusive husband :3
Koios. His names means "question" or "questioning", probably because he's the Titan of inquiring intellect. He's also the overseer of Heavenly Prophecies, and has an oracle up in the North Pole guarded by an earth-dragon - you'd know this serpent by the name of Draco, the constellation btw. Additionally, Hyperborea (where Apollo goes in the winter times) is part of his domain.
eyes
Unfortunately, we have very little mythological lore on these two, and even less in the RRverse (I cling to that one (1) Koios scene) which sucks because I love them already BUT it does give me lots of legroom to mess around with canon >:)
Back to the theory now. As you may have guessed, I'll be taking us in a direction concerning Apollo's mysterious grandparents. But what does this have to do with Apollo's visions?
Well. Remember when I mentioned that Delphi is the root of all earthly prophecies?
...look at Phoebe's paragraphs. She's the overseer of Earthly Prophecies, right? So it makes sense she's been affected by Python's takeover too.
(if you've read my fics you'd know this already lmao)
Asteria, Apollo's aunt, is a little trickier. She, too, has a hand in divination, but mainly through the night/stars and dreams. <-will come back to that later.
Koios, again, is overseer of Heavenly Prophecies, and is heavily implied to be able to commune with Ouranos's spirit. This is, apparently, a Big Deal because nobody else is mentioned to be able to do this.
...Except...remember this throwaway line in The Hidden Oracle?
Tumblr media
^Apollo can see Ouranos too.
Within this theory is a sub-theory, so to speak - that immortals with the gift of prophecy can see Ouranos, since they can see what cannot be seen. This would include Phoebe, Asteria, Koios, and Apollo.
And it'll make sense why they'd keep it to themselves. Kronos wouldn't have been happy to hear his dad was still around. Neither would Zeus, for that matter.
So here I was. Contemplating. Wrote a few fics based around this idea. And one in particular got me thinking (fic in question being When The Stars Align), and a little ways down the road I realized something.
If Phoebe, the overseer of Earthly Prophecies, would have been affected by Python's takeover...was Koios? Could he even be affected?
Because here's the deal: Koios is the overseer of Heavenly Prophecies. Prophecies from the Sky.
Phoebe's are of the Earth - the Earth that Python has taken control of. And Delphi is the root of Earthly Prophecies - not Heavenly.
That would be Koios's oracle, up in the North Pole with Draco.
...So that means Heavenly Prophecy must have still been in business during ToA.
But then comes the question: If it was still within the gods' control, why didn't they use it?
Well...Draco's there, for one. He's probably the Python-equivalent of the North, and clearly he's still there since no myth has spoken of his death (that I know of).
If you ask me, I just think the gods are too nervous/afraid to try Koios's oracle. They were too scared to face Python, after all, until Apollo arrived. I think they'd be scared of a serpent who comes and goes from the stars as he pleases.
And as for why Apollo hasn't done anything about it...well, I think his fight with Python left him rather scarred, don't you think? He probably went "yeah grandma's oracle is enough" and the only time he ever got close to Koios's was during his time in Hyperborea.
So getting back to the main theory now. (So many rabbit holes to dive into with this post. The ADHD Urge is real)
Since Heavenly Prophecies is still active, but Earthly is in Python's control, I conclude Apollo's visions come from the Heavenly source.
Could they have come from the now-working Dodona? Maybe. But Dodona's all about those windchimes and trees. It doesn't have the Vibe, so to speak, for granting visions.
And remember. Trophonius, Herophile, and Sibyl aren't destroyed/freed yet. They have Zero connection to Apollo at this point because Python cut him off from them.
...but he didn't from the North. From Koios's divine power.
Because remember. Apollo is the god of prophecy.
Not of Earthly Prophecies, like Phoebe.
Not of Heavenly Prophecies, like Koios.
Not of nighttime divination and dreams like Asteria.
Of. Prophecy.
Prophecy as a whole. The entirety. The whole enchilada.
Every part of prophecy he's the god of, be it tarot cards to the Oracle of Delphi itself.
In my opinion, I think whatever Koios's Oracle is, it has just as must power as Delphi. The only problem was that...everybody just left it be. Nobody considered it because:
1) scary dragon
2) scary titan ruled the place
3) honestly at this point I think it's just straight-up forgotten about. Like Branchus's Oracle. I think at one point Apollo himself mentions there are other Oracles besides the ones in-series, but there's so many that his mortal brain cannot comprehend how many.
If the Grove of Dodona nearly faded into obscurity, then I think it's entirely possible Koios's Oracle was forgotten about (or so we think...I'm gonna be chewing on this for a while.)
Coming back round to TDP...I think this is a reasonable explanation about Apollo's visions. To summarize:
Apollo is cut off from Earthly Prophecy, his usual source of foresight that he gets from Phoebe
The unused, near-forgotten-about Heavenly Prophecy side of Apollo ignites to steer him on the right path
This is possible because Apollo is the god of prophecy itself, and not a single subset of prophecy, so he's not limited in the same way Phoebe is
Koios's Oracle is still out there and kicking and I will die on this hill
One problem. What about Asteria? She can interpret the future from the stars...aka the Sky. Like Koios. So couldn't she provide some insight to the future, since she, too, is connected to Heavenly Prophecy?
This is where things get a lil' tricky. And where I really slap on my tinfoil hat and start headcanoning my way through lmao
Basically, I think that since Asteria became the island of Delos (long story) a good chunk of her power is ingrained there. She's not as strong as she used to be, so her foresight isn't as strong.
This, in turn, I think could also serve as a reason why Koios's Oracle is "asleep" so to speak and nearly lost to memory in the RRverse - in fact, I think Asteria and Phoebe are the only ones who bother to remember its existence.
And Leto, of course. But I don't think she wants her son to know of another Oracle with a giant snake guarding it. She's had enough heart-attacks, thank you.
(Same with Lelantos, tbh.)
Canon is my sandbox and I am making some sweet sandcastles out of it XD
TL;DR
Apollo's visions in TDP stem from Koios's source of Heaven Prophecy because Phoebe's source of Earthly Prophecy (Delphi) has been taken over by Python. Koios's source firmly knocks on Apollo's mental doors and decides to kick back into gear to help its titular patron's grandson out. Because Apollo is the god of prophecy itself - every bit of it.
Extras:
I find it fascinating how magic and prophecy are both part of the same family tree (Hecate & Apollo).
and yes. You should expect a fic concerning Koios's Oracle at some point. but no promises on when :3
Thank you for coming to Insane Theory Time With Alder. I hope there will be more lmao
Websites you can look into:
Koios (Theoi)
Phoebe (Theoi)
Hyperborea (Theoi)

yo should I write a fic with Nico shadowtravelling to Delos and meeting Asteria, Cal and Andie? It's kinda weird that Delos is mentioned like once, and I'm mad about it cus I love Asteria.

Children of Asteria
The children of the Titaness of the stars were distant in every way. Like the stars their mother rules, they shine so brightly and their brilliance isn't always seen, but never to be forgotten by the blanket of the sun. Shining so brightly, yet untouchable, you could only hope to gaze upon their sharp, burning, celestial selves, but never reach them. Such is their doom, Child of the Stars, cursed to be looked at and merely acknowledged, never known, never touched.

Yıldız's powers and abilities include:
Creating, manipulating, and shooting tiny stars.
Praying to Mom and shooting relatively small meteorites from space, right onto the battlefield/enemy.
Oracular visions and strong prophetic dreams at midnight.
Understanding of all constellations and basic astrology knowledge.
(Rogue idea taken from the one and only @aroaceleovaldez all the thanks to them, they have hauntingly beautiful ideas.)

Each of the twelve original Titans and who they fought for during the Second Titan War:
Let's start with the obvious ones:
Kronos: Naturally leading his side of the war. I hate Kronos, but this one is obvious.
Hyperion: Serving as a Commander in his brother Kronos's army. We see him during the Battle of Olympus, so this one is pretty obvious.
Iapetus: Fought for Kronos, only to lose his memory and become Bob. I really doubt you can kill a Titan (you can't kill Kronos, at least), so I imagine Iapetus/Bob is still out there after the Heroes of Olympus series. Maybe he's finally regained his memories (I can't remember if he already did that). He deserves that much, at least.
Crius: I believe the Lost Hero says that Crius fought the Roman demigods while Hyperion got to fight the Greek demigods. So Crius almost definitely fought on his brother Kronos's side.
Coeus: According to the Percy Jackson wiki, Coeus fought with Kronos. I don't think we ever saw him in the books though. I guess Coeus is the forgotten Titan, despite being the maternal grandfather of Hecate, Apollo and Artemis through his two daughters, Leto and Asteria.
Oceanus: I believe Oceanus fights on his brother Kronos's side in the Pjo series. I don't know why he's fighting on Kronos's side, seeing as he didn't help Kronos castrate Ouranos like the rest of his brothers did. But maybe it's just because of family loyalty, or something. Idk.
Now let's take some educated guesses on the female Titans. We know all six male first generation titans fought for Kronos, but what about the women of the family?:
Rhea: Seeing as Rhea is the mother of the gods, it makes sense for her to support her kids in this conflict. Besides, would Rhea really supoort Kronos? He was an awful husband, probably an awful brother and definitely an awful parent. So Rhea was probably on the side of her kids.
Theia: Well, Rhea and Theia. Guess Gaea and Ouranos weren't feeling unique when it came to those two, him? But anyway, I think Theia would be fighting with Kronos. Largely because her husband and brother is Hyperion, one of the leading commanders of the Titan army. Also, Theia and Hyperion had three kids: Helios, Selene and Eos. We know Helios and Selene were abandoned and their roles given to Artemis and Apollo. Not sure about Eos, though. But anyways, I think that Helios and Selene's treatment would help make Theia bitter towards her other relatives. She's probably fighting with Kronos to support her husband and get revenge for her kids.
Themis: Being the Titaness of Justice, I don't think it'd be right for Themis to pick a side. Justice is impartial, and all that. So I imagine she was completely neutral. Kind of like the Fates, probably. She just acted as a neutral observer.
Mnemosyne: I'm not really sure about Mnemosyne. She did have children with Zeus in the nine muses. And she doesn't seem to have much to gain from supporting Kronos. So I don't know. My best guess is: she either stayed completely neutral or she sided with Olympic. You can choose which you think is more likely. Personally, I'm leaning towards her being neutral.
Phoebe: I feel like Phoebe is stuck between a rock and hard spot. Her husband Coeus is fighting for Kronos, as is her grandchild Hecate. Yet her other two grandchildren, Apollo and Artemis, are fighting for Olympus. I feel like Phoebe is going to stay neutral, for fear of a tearing a rift within her family.
Tethys: Being that Tethys is married to Oceanus, she probably took a similar stance to his. So she probably fought for Kronos alongside her husband, but I don't really think she did it because she had any deep devotion to Kronos. I think she probably just did it because she wanted to be with her husband. Maybe also because she nursed Helios and Selene when they were young (at least according to wikipedia). So maybe she also wanted revenge for them?
So to recap:
On Kronos's Side: Kronos, Hyperion, Crius, Coeus, Oceanus, Iapetus, Tethys and Theia.
On the side of Olympus: Rhea and maybe Mnemosyne.
On no side: Themis, Phoebe, and maybe Mnemosyne.

Okay, so for my own fanfictions, most of which take place post-TOA and therefore post-Percy "claim your children" Jackson and Jason "honor minor gods" Grace, I made myself a spreadsheet of all the cabins I believe could plausibly be at Camp Half-Blood, and ended up with a whopping 270, and there's probably more dieties whom I couldn't find any information on, and some dieties whom I don't believe would have a cabin (ex. Kronos) (if you think I should add someone comment) and decided to paste it here, since I don't feel comfortable sharing my original spreadsheet. I did add the water dieties, even though their kids could also plausibly go to the underwater camp, but I've decided to give them the option of what camp they want. I also didn't copy their domains, but I have the list from my research, so you can ask if you'd like, I'll be glad to explain! Most of my research was from Theoi Project - Greek Mythology, and Brittanica, and probably some others I've since forgotten, so if you know any good Greek Mythology resourses and books, please share!
Here's some symbols before we begin:
* - virgin goddess. I added them because Athena and Artemis already have cabins (and Athena kids by magical means)
" - Dieties whom have faded in the series. Their cabins are more memorials to them.
Additionally there are 2 dieties named Thalia, (1) Thalia refers to the muse, the goddess of comedies, and (2) Thalia refers to the goddess of festivities and banquet

So that's my list. I don't really have a rhyme or reason for why each number is each, but I did clump together gods with similar domains because that's where they were easiest to find in my research... I honestly think kids of minor gods are very underused in TOA fics, and even in PJO and HOO to an extent. Jillie, my nine year old daughter of Gelus with a contageous laugh? One of my fave OCs.
As for Roman gods and goddess, I'm not as knowledgable, but hopefully I'll make a spreadsheet for plausable godly parents, though unlike CHB it doesn't need to be organized as there's just Cohorts. I don't write Camp Jupiter fics all that often, but it'll be a good resource to have if I choose to.

Too close to falling stars, Too far from anything else
When the shadows receded around Nico Di Angelo, he expected to be on solid ground, not falling through the air and screaming bloody murder. The sun shone down on him, so there was no way he could shadowtravel away. Luckily for him his fall was promptly stopped by a table, which now had a Nico sized hole in it. "What the-" a voice yelled, and footsteps thudded on the ground nearby.
"Gods above Mama is going to kill me" she exclaimed in ancient greek, though Nico could somewhat understand her. Then a blurry figure crouched in front of him "are you ok? That was quite a fall, my name is Andie." they said, in English this time. Nico felt something roll down his face and he wiped it off looking at it. With his eyes like malfunctioning cameras, he made out blood.
"you probably have a concussion… Cal! Can you get Mama" She yelled, a quail whistled in response. He felt himself being picked up before the world went black.
"Is he gonna be alright?" A voice whispered lowly. "He'll be fine, I've done the best I can to heal his injuries with the help of your sister" a silvery, ethereal voice replied. Nico blinked his eyes open, he wasn't in the sun anymore, he seemed to be sheltered under an old temple roof. Sitting next to him was a boy who looked a little older than him, with dark blonde hair and indigo eyes and a woman with long dark blonde hair and striking light lavender eyes that seemed to sparkle with the energy of a hundred stars.
"where am I?" He asked, pushing himself up into a sitting position. "You are on the isle of Delos, in Greece" the woman replied "you fell through my dining table"
"Sorry about that, I was trying to shadowtravel and it didn't work so well" Nico replied sheepishly. "It is no problem, demigods do not visit Delos very often, and my own children miss their company. I am thinking of sending them to Camp Half-blood, but I am worried about them not being accepted there" she said gently. "Maybe in the future, I'm the son of Hades and we're not that accepted yet" Nico replied. "Ah, I see" Asteria replied "Cal, go find your sister, our guest will need rest"
(@bugwolfsstuff here you are, the Asteria and Nico fic that we all required, may continue it later on)

So I thought the Titanesses would be a good side plot for the Romans (main continuity) OR the Wonder Fam in the DC crossover, and looked them up on the PJO wiki. Very brief rundown:
Rhea (Queen of the Titans, Mother of the Gods) stayed out of it, and for the sake of the Donna Troy panel in my cross over or just because of their domains in the main continuity, so did Themis (Titaness of Justice, amongst other things) and Mnemosyne (Titaness of Memory) did as well.
Leto, Apollo and Artemis 's mother and Titaness of Motherhood and... Demurity(?) probably did too. I can't see her going against the twins, given how Apollo talks about her in TOA, and Apollo has a vision of her trying to intervene with Zeus on her behalf. I can't imagine she could even do that if she had actively betrayed him.
We do know she's reforming in Tartarus in House of Hades, but she's back not long after that for TOA rather than trapped with the rest of Gaia's supporters. Whatever happened might have just been her getting caught in the crossfire or something unrelated.
Then we have Theia, Hyperion's wife and Titaness of Splendor. I haven't independently researched her, but maybe a potential candidate for Kronos's side.
The PJO wiki also credits her with the domain of "Clear Sight" and loving "clear views" and "sparkly things". So bribery+ humans destruction of nature as a motivation maybe?
I don't think Eos, Titaness of the Dawn is getting involved if her siblings, Selene and Helios, are faded. But maybe 🤷‍♀️ Maybe she wants revenge for her siblings being supplanted. She also has a history with Aphrodite.
We have Asteria, Titaness of Starry Night and Prophetic Dreams. You would think "Prophetic Dreams" would tell her how things are going, but, hey, Apollo still does dumb things. The wiki goes with Hesiod's account of her being Hecate's mother, rather than Nyx, so maybe she joined for her daughter's sake. It sounds mildly more plausible as amotivation than "light pollution", which is the best alternative I could think of.
Tethys is the wife of Oceanus, Titaness of Seas and Freshwater. She's purportedly kind, but if her husband was tempted until he joined Kronos, maybe she followed out of loyalty.
Maybe she's slightly conflicted and is the one to defy both the Olympians and Kronos to reveal to Diana what's going on in the DC crossover. It would work best if it was during or just before the whole Typhoon thing, not long before the Battle of Manhattan.
Then the last we have is Aura, Titaness of the Breezes, who gets no info on the PJO wiki... but a quick google search shows that's likely because what little exists (from a Greek poet, but in the age of the Romans) it's very not middle grade material. TW for Rape if you google it. Anyway, she has actually pretty decent reasons to try and kill Dionysus and Artemis if any of that carries over to PJO's version. I don't love the story, but Rick kept Agrius and Oreius, so.
So I think plausibly, we end up with Asteria, Theia, Aura, Tethys, and maybe Eos as possible extra antagonists in the background of the PJO Titan war.
Maybe Mnemosyne if you aren't being influenced by crossover plans like I am, but I feel like the effects of her hostility would have been very, very notable.
We also don't have an accounting for what Koios (Farsight, Intellect, and Knowledge, the North) did during the war, but he was on Gaia's side later, so he can also be used as needed for plot reasons.

Note
may i ask about the titan trio 👀
MY BABIES! YES YOU CAN ASK ABOUT THEM! (you can also ask @thothfulthieves which is my sideblog for PJO and my ocs)
Hina Zhao is the daughter of Helios, titan of the sun and Polaris is the son of Asteria, titaness of the stars. Darcel, son of Selene belongs to @phoenix--flying (which I assume you already know and came here from them)
Hina Zhao's name means sun and ancient city, which I thought was perfect for her. She is 20 years old during BoM. Unlike most of my ocs (Callie excluded) both of her parents are loving. Her mortal mother is a a woman of Chinese decent who moved to Washington D.C. and works at the Smithsonian. Despite being busy, she still makes time to spend with Hina. Hina went to be with Helios when her powers started developing. Helios introduced Hina to Selene and her child Darcel. They became quick friends and menaces to their parents. (affectionately, of course)
Polaris was names Polaris because of the north star. That's it. His father died due to diabetic complications when Polaris was five, so Asteria stepped in and helped her son. Hecate is Asteria's only daughter, so Polaris also has a close bond with his godly (titaness) sister. Children of Hecate do tease Polaris about being their "uncle". He met Hina and Darcel after he quite literally ran into Hina and spilled her espresso all over her and himself. Darcel and Hina practically adopted this adhd star child after that.
The trio joined the TA after Luke and Callie discovered them on a mission. All three are pretty biased against the Olympians for basically forgetting about Helios, Selene, and Asteria. And basically disrespecting said Titans by making everyone believe they faded into nothing.
P.S. Darcel and Polaris are super close with Nerissa, my daughter of Nyx and Hina is close with Dawn, @phoenix--flying's child of Hemera.
