no wait wait wait hear me out about how the four beads is a truly devious and smart addition
so starting off with four beads from the dryad establishes a few things:
1. getting out of the underworld wasn’t something they really thought about yet (too many steps ahead, I also have ADHD I get it)
2. poseidon HAS thought of that problem and has made the beads in preparation to protect them
3. poseiden thought about rescuing sally when planning how to get everyone back safely, not just percy and his friends
2 & 3 plant the seeds (a long with the dryad’s words and hermes’ comments) that poseiden really does care about percy (and sally!). yes I know I know, bare minimum to care about your kid etc. but considering this is a show and we don’t get percy’s internal monologue it kinda makes sense to have a little more details that make poseiden seem better to the audience
[read more break to not clog up the tag. I promise I get into the angst shortly]
all these little bits that imply poseiden really does want to be there for him but can’t, that he’s been watching from afar because he didn’t want zeus to find out he broke the pact and take his anger out on his son and former love (yes, love! this is the man/god that wanted sally to be his queen with him in his underwater kingdom!!!). I actually really like the idea of those posts about how he has been helping out in little ways over the years because. let’s be real for a second. NO WAY does sally afford that apartment AND have the ability to send percy to specialized boarding schools with the salary of a CANDY SHOP EMPLOYEE. I get it I get it, the gods are deadbeats, but I’ll admit I kind of like the idea that he’s been doing what he feasibly could without getting caught by making extra money appear in sally’s bank account or sm
making him seem (and possibly be) more sympathetic is another reason that fuels percy to change the system rather than join luke to tear it all down. he knows the system is bad but he sees hope and truly believes it can be changed for the better. that is something that can be saved, not destroyed
4. this is kinda irrelevant but I like that it is the dryad that agrees to give percy the pearls after poseiden says for him and his friends to go back to camp because she wants him to have a chance to change things. gives her a little bit more agency. (also y’all she’s SO pretty in gay but moving in)
so. four beads.
if we want to keep the dilemma and character growth that comes with there only being three beads and someone having to make a sacrifice, something needs to happen: one of the beads breaks or someone loses it
is it percy? who has realized they need four beads for EVERYONE to come back and is horrified that they now only have three, meaning either he himself or one of the most important people to him has to be left behind in actual hell in order for the world to be saved? think about the dread and self-loathing that would come from that
or is it annabeth or grover? where the horrifying realization is the same but now there is a gut reaction from percy to be upset with the person who loses/breaks it. he loves his friends and can’t stay mad at them but now they are in this impossible dilemma to choose who stays behind and it’s killing all of them. the impossibly guilt of the person who breaks/loses it knowing that it’s their fault someone doesn’t get to go home, someone has to stay behind in the underworld
and when does this happen? early on, and we spend the episode watching them all try to figure out the dreadful problem of who gets left behind. looking at each other thinking, I can’t leave them behind, I can’t. they’re my family. but we can’t leave percy’s mom behind either.
or does it happen right before they have the chance to go, and they all think everyone is going to make it and sally is in percy’s grasp only for everything to fall apart and now everyone is looking at each other thinking, who is going to have to be left behind? who has to be the sacrifice?
anyways, I think there is something truly devious about them KNOWING there NEEDS to be four beads and HAVING THEM only to have something happen and the option of everyone going home safe being ripped from their grasps
#I let my English muffin sit in the toaster oven for like five extra minutes after it dinged to finish this post#everyone being like FOUR BEADS IM WORRIED and I’m like NO THINK OF THE POTENTIAL#percy jackson and the olympians#percy jackson#pjo#pjo tv#pjo tv spoilers#pjo 1x06#pjo speculation#grover underwood#annabeth chase#sally jackson#not sure how else to tag this#mine#I haven’t read the books in a decade so I’m slightly rusty on lore but like guys this is how we can still win#yes I know deadbeat parent gods yes but have you considered this makes things more spicy#adds more flavor#also yall this man wanted to make sally his queen you gotta admit that on some level he cares

PJO wing AU Masterpost!!
The idea of the AU is that each demigod sprouts wings as they come into their powers and identity as a half-blood. This art is just for demigods with avian wings, but it works the same for bat wings too. Insect wings are a whole different beast that I will tackle later. The idea is that each individual gets human-sized wings of a species based on their godly parentage, personality, and other mysterious factors!
Links to my other posts about the AU- I'll try to keep it updated! ~ Percy Jackson ~ Will Solace ~ Nico DiAngelo ~

I really wanted to try and emphasize the inhumanity of the half-bloods in this AU by actually changing their fundamental physiology, because I really think it gets glossed over a lot that the demigods are literally not fully human. I imagine that the process of growing the wings is incredibly uncomfortable and at points painful, but is made a lot easier by access to Apollo cabin healers with nectar and ambrosia. The anatomy of it all is enabled entirely by magic, so there would be structures to allow wing movement, but without the magical element flight would be impossible. Here is an idea of the skeletal structure we are working with here:

(I am by no means an expert in human or avian skeletal anatomy- feel free to correct any egregious errors here lol) I imagine that there would be plenty of additional muscles that develop along with the wings, but I do not want to really figure that out. I think that with the aid of magic to help them fly these muscles would be able to be small and inconspicuous enough to not significantly affect a demigods general stature — remember that we are not going for exact anatomical plausibility here — and so I will not bother to figure that out unless I have to.
I have so many more thoughts on this and I plan to post a lot more about this AU, so be on the lookout for that if you are interested! Feel free to ask questions or voice constructive criticism, all is very appreciated! 💜

Canonically speaking I think out of all the characters that have died Jason has pretty much the lowest chances of ever being brought back. There’s been too much emphasis on the fact that he just won’t be and that he’s happy wherever he is. Story-wise I think this is a shame because there’s a lot you could explore with his character but past books have explicitly stated that they won’t bring him back, and even talked about how bringing him back would be disrespecting Jason’s choice.
Also the point of Jason dying and not being brought back was stressing that permanent death was a thing that could happen, even to the main heroes. If Rick brings Jason back he loses that and any important death/near-death situation going forward will be negated by the Marvel feeling of “eh even if something does happen to this character it isn’t going to stick.”
I greatly dislike how Jason’s death was handled and especially how much it was just a lesson for Apollo to learn, but I highly doubt that it is ever going to be walked back.
#saying this specifically in terms of expectation management because I’m seeing some speculation floating around after the tsats announcemen#I’m happily toying with the concept of bringing Jason back in fic and/or pretending he never died#but I think expecting canon to change it will inevitably just end in disappointment and heartache#jason grace#hoo#heroes of olympus#ToA#trials of Apollo#tsats#the sun and the star#Jason pjo#tsats 2#rrverse

was thinking about that valgrace drabble i wrote for valgrace week because i miss them and its time to start speculating on that au.
so the image i kind of had for that drabble, like about the arena, was basically daedalus’ labyrinth in mind. because of the constant dead ends and the monsters around the corner, the fighting ring where ethan nakamura was introduced, etc. except it wouldn’t be underground nor would the walls be made out of whatever material the labyrinth was (i forgot).
but rather a maze made out of sand. so there’d be scorpions, they’d have to constantly move because the maze shifts and the walls would dissolve and open up new paths. along with pools of lava, of course. and not to kill off our tributes so quickly with exhaustion, heatstrokes and lack of water, there’s obviously little bits of water here and there. basically they’re fighting for their lives out in a desert and just, you know, have to gamble on whether or not the ponds or cacti they find aren’t poisonous.
at least that’s how it is for valgrace’s arena.
for percy’s arena, its centered around water because duh, i can’t ever let go references or symbolism. reyna’s arena would be similar to the roman colosseums. just to name a couple. i don’t think annabeth would’ve been reaped but i do think she is a stylist alongside pollux (castor died in his arena).
for the rest of the seven and co (i have a mutual’s tags in mind as i write this, love u to the moon and back for ranting away), thalia would indeed be a victor and nico would indeed have been taken in by the grace siblings after bianca’s death.
that goes without saying, reyna would have been frank’s mentor. grover, i think, would have been a mentor as well. i just have no idea who would he have mentored because i’m not assigning districts at the moment. (not yet at least aside from the grace siblings and our children of war from new rome)
anyway
so the arenas. definitely inspired from ancient greek and rome along with the books. like the labyrinth for example. bianca’s arena most likely would’ve been related to the underworld. so getting through the fields of punishment yada yada. since we’re being practical, another arena would be similar to tartarus so completely underground with no sun, just nothing but the rivers and caves and whatnot in sight (this would be lee’s arena and if so, he probably dies to save micheal. if its micheal’s arena then he would die to save will). then there’s places like olympus with the columns and since in mythology, its in the sky, the floors would probably be chipped away as in, some of the tributes might either die from the rubble OR you know, sink holes. joyful, isn’t it? atlantis, an actual death match battlefield probably, volcanoes, the ice palace with khione (i don’t remember what exactly it was or which book that’s from bare with me), the wolf house (that would be fun), the forest from camp half-blood with killer vultures.
ummmm i feel like i’m missing a few but you basically get the idea.
a lot to pick and who actually on who’s arena it could be, who would’ve won, etc etc. that also goes without saying, luke castellan is still a traitor unfortunately. so is silena. isn’t it fun that there’s twelve districts with twelve cabins (at least when we aren’t counting the rest but even then there’s about 24 cabins in total i think. i haven’t been caught up with pjo in a while my bad guys) so all the half siblings are still together and still have to watch each other die? oh the angst, its fantastic. (i’m no better than a game master i fear)
i like to think the children of war—ares/mars, athena, aphrodite/venus, bellona, etc—are most likely victors whether its on their own or they come from a long line of victors. so reyna and hylla, frank and his mother, annabeth, the aphrodite and ares kids, etc etc.
this came out way longer than i thought BUT its very fun to think about. i don’t know if i’ll ever turn this into a fic, i have my hands full as is but as always, i’ll let you know anyway

Strange little nerd fact - I love drawing Poseidon with red hair so much, and there's a reason! When you're diving deep under the sea, the first colour that you lose the ability to see is red. This is closely followed by orange and yellow.
The deeper in the ocean he goes, the darker his hair becomes. By the time he's at Atlantis (or whatever his underwater kingdom is called), then he could have book-Poseidon's black hair.
Or, of course, Poseidon needs the entire red spectrum for his hair to not turn grey every time Percy almost dies-
#percy jackson#pjo#pjo speculation???#observation#like i'm observing poseidon like he's the first kraken i've ever seen and i'm about to be crushed along with my crew#i sincerely hope this post makes sense#i've had a fever and headache and all the bad things all day and i'm emotional about the ocean again#if i lived near the ocean i would be too powerful#i'm learning to dive so goddamn deep-

Okay so I still can't get over how perfect "We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium" was and I have a lot of thoughts. I just can't get over how perfectly they're blending together character exploration and plot. It's all so perfect and cohesive and I want to talk a little about how they're dealing with the relationships between the characters.
Percy and Grover
I think at first we’re supposed to think Percy wants Grover on the quest because he is his only friend, so therefore has to be the traitor, but then at the end, we get that it’s just because Percy fully trusts that Grover won’t betray him because he is used to the world where he and Grover are each other’s only friends. But that completely breaks for him when he finds out that Grover was Annabeth’s (and Luke and Thalia’s) protector first because he’s realizing that, while Grover would never betray him in malice, he, like Luke, might betray him if that’s what Annabeth needed (for safety, for the quest, for anything). And it also speaks so loudly to Percy’s views of friendship and loyalty: I don’t think Percy thinks he will be betrayed in some big malicious way. I think that he believes it is tied to failing to save what matters most—he won’t be betrayed by a fake friend who actually hates him, but by a real friend who will try to stop him from saving his mom if it interferes with the quest. He trusted that Grover will help him save his mom, even if that means risking the quest, but made that decision not knowing that Grover has an even longer history with Annabeth and might choose her not because he doesn’t love Percy, but because he loves Annabeth, too.
2. Annabeth and Percy
She’s so freaking determined to be the best. And as must as I love that post going around on here and Twitter and TikTok about how Annabeth was struggling with the candy because, in addition to never having gone to a store before, she wanted to do something nice for Percy (and Grover), I don’t think it was just about friendship. Percy was doubting her authority. I don’t think she gives a crap (at least, she won’t admit to it) about whether or not he likes her. I just don’t think she’s above buying his respect. The way she refers to him is so mean? Like, constantly referring to him as Grover’s friend, but in a way that feels like a pet. She says “Grover, control your friend,” but might as well be saying “Control you dog.” I could easily believe that she was effectively buying dog treats. But I also think both can be true. Because she clearly was so hurt by what he said about them not being friends, so she must want to be friends. ***Very minor spoilers for the rest of the books here, so skip to the third section if you've never read them*** And the ONLY time Annabeth talks about something positive from the first seven years of her life in ALL ELEVEN BOOKS IN WHICH SHE PROMINENTLY FEATURES is when she talks about her dog. For seven years, the only thing that loved her (and the only thing she loved) was her dog. Obviously, she is 12 and knows that dogs aren’t people and people aren’t dogs, but the only time she has probably ever had to work for someone’s affection and has been successful in that effort was probably with her dog.
(And yes, I know: Grover and Thalia and Luke. But those friendships are all different because all three of them were in an inherent place of authority and protection over her. I think we all tend to forget that while Grover and Annabeth appear the same age now, they probably didn’t when they met. Thalia was the closest in age to her, and she’s still five years older. And Annabeth doesn’t seem to have any other close friends).
I also love that it’s Percy who’s reluctant to the friendship here. Annabeth is just too traumatized and un-socialized to do it on her own. They’re not not friends because Annabeth is hung up on the Poseidon v Athena rivalry like she is in the books, they’re not friends because Annabeth (from Percy’s perspective) is a jerk.
3. Annabeth and Athena
The way Grover looks at her when Percy suggests leaving her hat with Medusa and she just says “Okay”!!!! Like, you cannot tell me that that conversation went down the way it did with no relation to the earlier conversation with Medusa. Despite her adamant defense of Athena, Annabeth was just told that her mother is a monster and a monster creator, straight from the mouth of one of her victims. For the first time in her life, the pedestal Annabeth has put her mom on is deteriorating and, before Annabeth gets the chance to pry further, they kill Medusa. And sure, this confirms to Annabeth that she was right. But she can’t stop the nagging in her head that, even if Medusa is a monster, she’s a monster that Athena created and how can that mean Athena is anything other than a monster? Especially when Medusa loved Athena just as Annabeth does. Even if she doesn’t totally believe her, she doesn’t not believe her, either. How can there not be a part of her brain that wonders, “will my mom turn on me one day, too?” So when Percy suggests leaving her hat behind, that broken, doubting part of herself says, “Okay.” Because, yes, it’s a gift from her mom. But what does that mean when her mom is a monster?
(And so maybe we will get an Annabeth-driven emphasis on the Athena v Poseidon rivalry not because of Annabeth’s blind loyalty to her mother, but because she has seen what happens when favorites of Athena appear too loyal to Poseidon.)

devastated that after like four years of praying for a greek mythology themed campaign from d20, I get one and it’s about WRESTLING
I love the mini seasons so this isn’t me upset about it not being intrepid heroes and I love the move of trying to get fans from other niches into dnd but im gonna be so honest if there was EVER something I didn’t care about, it would be wrestling. you could’ve done literally any other combination and I probably would’ve been super interested but 😭😭😭
like im still gonna watch it because I need my serotonin boosts from hearing my gods name dropped but oh im never recovering from this
#my post#d20#this is /lh btw im not actually complaining#the concept is cool I just really hate sports and this one just ain’t for me :’)#which is fine obv im just sad abt it because we r never going to get another greek myth style season again and im so sad abt that#especially after burrows end jumpscared us with ppl speculating it was gonna be a pjo inspired season like misfits and magic was with hp

This is just a bunch of thoughts regarding @starfata's idea of Hermes experiencing something similar to Apollo's Trials and going from the severely depressed PJO to something more in line with Epic!Hermes. @chaoticdumbassrogue I thought you might be amused by this, so I'm linking you too.
First of all, there's the actual impetus for this. Zeus cast Apollo out and demoted him to mortality using the whole Octavian thing as an excuse; Hermes, presumably, would have to cause at least equal offense for him to be subjected to something similar. Zeus can't go around stripping gods of their immortality willy-nilly, that's a surefire recipe for uniting everyone against him. He needs an excuse.
(There's also the underlying fan theory that Zeus did it in part because he viewed Apollo as a potential threat - the god is very, very powerful, and despite Apollo's self-relegation to a harmless degenerate, the Thunder Bringer is nothing but paranoid. Hermes - Hermes has never once rebelled against his father. He's the 'good son'; he sticks to his responsibilities, he's a hard worker - partly because IMO PJO!Hermes is so damn depressed and he's using work as a distraction.)
If this is the Athenide Twins AU, however, there is the potential for a very, very real excuse. And it could be twofold.
The first is Hermes simply protesting what's happening to Apollo. He and Apollo - have drifted apart over time, but they once were each other's Favorite Brother. And more than that - they were in love with the Athenide Twins. They know the taste of each other's grief. They were - the other was the only person who knew exactly what they were going through, and there is an unspoken solidarity, an unexpected comfort in having someone else who gets it. And now that Apollo has been punished, just as the Athenide Twins have returned - that might all come boiling to the forefront once again.
The second is - it's the Athenide Twins. Zeus canonically regarded Percy Jackson as too dangerous to live on more then once occasion; he does not like the child of Poseidon. If you're essentially making said child a god, a very, very powerful god with allies among the Olympian Council, he is - he might regard it as a potential problem. If Loyalty and Reason are not on his side... well. That's a threat.
And everyone knew that Apollo and Hermes were in love with the fountain-born twins. Real, true love. They would have done - just about anything for them, and now they are back. If Zeus/Jupiter is acting to preemptively stamp out potential threats, if he's worried that his sons' loyalty is to Loyalty and Family instead of himself - that's all he might need to take action against them. (He seems more Jupiter then Zeus in this excuse, I must admit - if we're going by the 'Rome did it's level best to either erase the existence of the Athenides or co-opt them to their own use' speculation).
So Zeus might take that excuse to case Hermes out and down.
The thing is, Apollo's journey was - very much about reclaiming himself. About rediscovering the truth of his identity after so many centuries of avoidance and lying about things to himself. About coming to terms with who he is and who he wants to be - suiting, for the god of truth. Hermes' would be substantially different.
Hermes is the god of lies. Of journeys. And I think he's been ignoring those domains for a long, long time, subsumed beneath his role as god of messengers and messages. That's - mainly how he's portrayed in PJO; the eternal mailman/deliveryperson. Historically, that is not who Hermes is at all. I think his journey is a journey. (He's forgotten how much he liked traveling. How much he loved the journey over the destination. How it felt, to dance on the edge, with only his wits and his lies charting him a safe path to his goal. And oh, but oh, it is glorious.)
And remember how PJO!Hermes told Percy that he doesn't believe gods can change?
Apollo's quest was about discovering the truth of himself. I think Hermes' might be the realization that he can change. (And that would break him, more than just a little). Where Apollo is rediscovering responsibility and accountability, Hermes is learning how to put down his burdens, how to stop using them as an excuse to punish himself. He's rediscovering his whimsy. (And yes, I'm using this as an excuse to reinvent him as something very close to Epic!Hermes - I like that guy.)
In one way, I think the lesson they learn is very similar - 'you screwed up. You can't change that, but you can do better. So do better'.
I don't know what the end goal of Hermes' quest would be. He doesn't have any legendary antagonists like Apollo does, and besides, head-on confrontations is not what Hermes is known for. He's the god of loopholes, of coming at something sideways. Maybe it's something about dismantling the Triumvate's Empire even as Apollo goes for the decapitating strike? Mm, doesn't feel like it - I do think he'd have to pull off at least one heist with only mortal capabilities. I do think that his and Apollo's paths wouldn't cross at all - their journeys are about them, they wouldn't coincide.
Most of all, I think the journey would have to be about Hermes himself. It can't be about Arsinoe, or 'winning her back' - it has to be something he does for himself.

The article says the character Sage Linder is playing is unknown, but it's expected to be either η Κίρκη (Circe) or a recurring character throughout the season.
Heather Feeny is also said to be joining the cast in a minor role. Off the top of my head I can't think of any characters she could be playing other than one of the goddesses but that's not a minor role, an attendant of η Κίρκη, or one of the mortals on the Princess Andromeda.
PJOTV Casting NEWS
The King of the gods has been re-cast!
Here's the link to the Variety article with the info
My thoughts are below the cut
I did NOT expect them to re-cast so soon, let alone announce it. In the books, ο Βασιλεύς (the King) doesn't appear again after 'The Lightning Thief' until the end of 'The Titan's Curse'. Re-casting him now suggests that he's going to be in Season 2.
Courtney B. Vance looks very similar to Lance Reddick, which isn't entirely necessary, as the gods can change their appearance. However, it will help new viewers and fans identify him as portraying the lord of Όλυμπος (Olympus) more easily.

Just a reminder as we're all becoming continuing to be feral for season 2 of PJO
They're kids.
And as much as I love all the "omg he's totally Percy!!", just remember that he's not. They're actors. They're doing a phenomenal job and we're really lucky to have them as a fandom, but... remember that they've signed up for a big job at a very young age. It's our duty as a fandom (especially a fandom with a lot of adults in it) to protect them, make sure that they are being respected, and (APPROPRIATELY) call out inappropriate and/or disrespectful behaviour when we see it. If anyone needs it, I've put some examples below the cut.
✅Appropriate ✅
"Walker is such an incredible Percy!!!" "Leah does such a great job portraying Annabeth!!!!" "Their dynamic is amazing!!!"
"I don't like the way Walker plays Percy - I always saw him as XYZ." "I don't like Lea as Annabeth. It's just not how I saw her." (borderline. consider why you can't see Annabeth as anything except white. but if you're being polite, I'll give you a grudging pass)
Fully clothed/non-sexual fanart of the actors (in or out of character) (romantic is okay)
Posting/reposting consenting photos, (respectful) edits, etc of the actors in or out of character
Discussing details of their personal lives that the actors have chosen to share with the public (but don't make it weird, ok?)
❌Inappropriate❌
"Walker and Leah need to date irl, they have so much chemistry!!" uh. no. You're seeing *acting*. Leave their personal lives out of it
"Annabeth being played by a black actor is ridiculous, wokeness is getting out of control" or any variation upon that sentiment. Honestly just fuck off. Also (and yes this is a sub tweet) recolouring fanart that depicts Annabeth as black? Absolutely not. If you absolutely have to, go do your own fucking artwork like a normal human being instead of a racist POS.
Raunchy/suggestive/sexual fanart of the actors (in or out of character). Nope. They are children. Stop it. Don't care if you're "aging them up". Imagine how that feels for them.
Posting/reposting photos where the actors aren't/don't seem to be consenting to the photo
Speculating on or pressuring the actors to reveal ANY DETAILS about their private lives. This includes, but is far from limited to: their contact details/locations, their sexuality, their relationships, their diagnoses, their politics (they're still really young... idk about you guys but my political opinions were hot garbage at 16. they get a (moderate) pass until they're at least 18)
These are obviously non-extensive lists. Please use your brain, and, if in doubt, don't post it.
Also, if you see inappropriate behaviour, please don't be an idiot about it. First course of action should always be politely talking to the person in private. After that, yes, it may be appropriate to start publicly calling them out. Having said that, remember that teens can be dumb (speaking from lived experience...), so let's give them some grace. Ignoring, reporting, blocking, and not engaging is sometimes the best thing you can do for dumbasses, especially if they're attention-seeking.
I love you all and I have complete faith that we, as a fandom, can rally and make sure the cast knows that they are loved and respected.

With the announcement of PJO season 3, a bunch of people are really excited for the arrival of Nico Di Angelo (I am too) because he’s such an important character, both for the story and for queer ppl in general
That being said we will NOT:
1. Be racist if the actor is POC
2. Sexualize a MINOR
3. Harass him/try to find personal info about him
4. Speculate about the actor’s sexuality
5. Force the kid to come out
I need you guys to remember that a little KID is going to be cast for this role, and you can love and adore Nico and be excited, but you need to be able to separate the real child who is going to be playing Nico from the character of Nico
#I’m so annoyed this even has to be said#but after seeing the way you guys were with Leah and Walker…#like eww bro#behave#PJO#HOO#TOA#Percy Jackson#percy jackson and the olympians#heroes of olympus#trials of apollo#riordanverse#rick riordan#percy jackson tv show#percy jackson season 3#Nico Di Angelo

I think Percy Jackson and Will Solace were friends before, during and after The Last Olympian
Warning: this post has absolutely zero right to be as long, as it ended up being, and is, at times, quite chaotic and not as well structured as I would like it to be.
A take that I’ve seen in this fandom in the past few months, both on TikTok, and on Tumblr, is that Will and Percy have a strained relationship after the battle of Manhattan, and specifically, after Michael Yew died during the battle at the Williamsburg bridge.
Now, I understand that Michael's death adds complexity to their relationship, and that it offers a lot of potential for angst, especially in terms of creating a tragic connection between Will and Nico. I'm not trying to invalidate that interpretation of Will. Since he’s a minor character in the original series, everyone naturally has their own take on him and his emotions. So, this is not a claim to the truth, this is simply me providing a different interpretation, in which Percy and Will have a more positive relationship, because I absolutely adore the possibility of their friendship.
(Considering the fact, that Will had very little screen time in The Last Olympian, this will involve a lot of speculation, and comes obviously from a biased view, even if I try to mostly base my interpretation on the text, that we do have about him.)
There are four aspects I want to primarily focus on:
The relationship Percy and Will might have had before the battle of Manhattan
The incident at the Williamsburg bridge & the circumstances surrounding Michael Yew’s death
Will’s characterization shortly after that incident
Will’s possible view of Percy during and after The Last Olympian
The relationship Percy and Will might have had before the battle of Manhattan
Now, Will’s first appearance in the PJO universe was in the last Olympian. So, this point is obviously mostly speculation, and based more generally on the relationship Percy has with the rest of camp, and less on Will as an individual character.
But based on that, I personally think there are two facets to their relationship.
Will and Percy being friends
Percy being generally seen as a leader of Camp Half-Blood
Friends:
To understand the relationship Will and Percy have, I think it’s important to consider the dynamics in camp half-blood at the beginning of the last Olympian. This was a group of around 45- 50 kids and teenagers, who had no place else to go, who faced discrimination everywhere else in the world, who already lost friends and siblings and who fought in at least one major battle together.
They grew up alongside each other, they fought together, they died alongside each other and they buried their friends together. They might have not always gotten along perfectly,, but it’s pretty safe to say, that they probably trusted each other more than anyone else in the world. There is a strong bond connecting all of them, Percy and Will included.
Despite this, it’s obviously still possible, that Will and Percy had a more neutral relationship and didn’t interact much. That calling them friends would be a bit of a stretch, and that the only thing connecting them is this deep sense of comradery, which no matter how strong, didn’t accumulate to an actual friendship.
However, we do know, that Percy at least considers the rest of camp, Will included, his friends. He calls them that on multiple occasions all throughout The Last Olympian:
As I looked at their faces—all these campers I'd known for so many summers—a nagging voice whispered in my mind: One of them is a spy. But I couldn't dwell on that. They were my friends. I needed them. (The last Olympian, chapter 9)
She wore the same kind of simple brown dress as she had before, but she was a grown woman now. I bowed. "Lady Hestia." My friends followed my example. (The last Olympian, Chapter 9)
I turned to my friends. They looked stunned and scared, and I couldn't blame them. (The last Olympian, Chapter 10)
I could have stabbed it, but I hesitated. This is not Mrs. O'Leary, I reminded myself. This is an untamed monster. It will kill me and all my friends. (The last Olympian, Chapter 11)
Too many of our friends lay wounded in the streets. Too many were missing. (The last Olympian, Chapter 15)
I looked at Pandora's jar, and for the first time I had an urge to open it. Hope seemed pretty useless to me right now. So many of my friends were dead. (The last Olympian, Chapter 17)
Grover and I cared for the wounded, and once the sky bridge re-formed, we greeted our friends who had survived. (The last Olympian, Chapter 20)
I thought about my friends from camp: Charles Beckendorf, Michael Yew, Silena Beauregard, so many others who were now dead. (The last Olympian, Chapter 20)
I specifically want to focus on this quote, which takes place during the battle at the Williamsburg bridge:
"Retreat!" I told my friends. "I'll hold them.'" (The Last Olympian, Chapter 11)
Here, he specifically addresses the Apollo cabin. No one else is present except for them, Percy, and Annabeth.
Obviously, we don’t have Will’s POV, but I personally see no reason to think this friendship wasn’t mutual.
Leader:
I’m going to keep this point rather short, because there is not much room for debate about the fact, that Percy was seen as a leader at the time ‘The Last Olympian’ takes place. He has accomplished a lot of incredible feats, and no one disagreed with him leading them during the battle of Manhattan. So, Will probably saw him the same way.
"But you're our leader." He smiled. "I am your trainer, your teacher. That is not the same as being your leader. I will go gather what allies I can. It may not be too late to convince my brother centaurs to help. Meanwhile, you called the campers here, Percy. You are the leader." I wanted to protest, but everybody was looking at me expectantly, even Annabeth. (The last Olympian, chapter 9)
The battle at the Williamsburg bridge
Now, to focus on the battle at the Williamsburg bridge, and especially Will’s POV during it. This was certainly an emotionally charged situation. A popular interpretation here is, like I said, that Will’s and Percy’s relationship would become strained after this battle, and more specifically after Michael’s death. I actually argue that the opposite is true. I think, that Will's opinion of Percy improved after this battle.
Let me explain.
Will was, I think, around 13 or 14 years old during the battle of Manhattan and probably terrified.
(Please take his age with a grain of salt. I have this information from the fan wiki, which likes to be wrong at times and on top of that, we can never truly trust Rick Riordan’s timelines and character ages.)
It was his first battle in that book. And a really bad one at that. Will was at the Williamsburg bridge together with the rest of his cabin, and they were completely overwhelmed. Roughly 10 campers were up against an army of 200 monsters. They didn’t have their flying chariot. They had already shot most of their arrows. Hope was dwindling and at least one Apollo camper had already gotten killed by a hellhound.
Then, in their hour of greatest need, Percy and Annabeth arrived.
I really want to try to get into Will’s head here, and think about what kind of impression Percy must have made on him during this battle.
There are two aspects, which I think are really important to consider:
The first one is the fact that Percy always fought at the front lines, and even told the Apollo cabin on multiple occasions to stand back, while he faced the enemy alone or only with Annabeth.
The first thing Percy did when he arrived at the battle was to tell Michael to form a defensive line, while he fought alone against the minotaur, and then later against 199 enemy monsters (. I'll distract the monsters. You group up here. Move the sleeping mortals out of the way. Then you can start picking off monsters while I keep them focused on me. (The Lats Olympian, Chapter 11)
Later, when Kronos arrived, Percy told them again to retreat, while he and Annabeth held off Kronos, and his guards, consisting of around 40 demigods and 20 monsters (The Titan lord's men drew their swords and charged. The hooves of their skeletal horses thundered against the pavement. Our archers shot a volley, bringing down several of the enemy, but they just kept riding. "Retreat!" I told my friends. "I'll hold them.' (The Last Olympian, Chapter 11))
Because Percy did this, and risked his own life, no other Apollo camper died on that bridge, aside from Michael. He saved the entire cabin with that strategy, and seeing Percy face the enemy army alone must have really invigorated a sense of trust in him from Will and his half-siblings.
The second aspect, would be Percy’s fighting abilities
I don’t think I can reiterate enough how absolutely insane, Percy must have seem like to his fellow campers in this battle alone.
He easily, and I mean easily, defeated the minotaur
Because we have already seen Percy kill the minotaur when he was 12, and because we see how fast he defeated him now, it’s easy to forget that that beast is still the minotaur. One of the most dangerous monsters in greek mythology, which has already killed several other halfbloods at this point in time, and probably also at least one Apollo camper. (Tied around the base of each blade were lots of bead necklaces. I realized they were Camp Half-Blood beads—necklaces taken from defeated demigods. (The Last Olympian, chapter 11)
He fights 199 monsters, and demolishes them without receiving a single scratch
I sliced through armor like it was made of paper. Snake women exploded. Hellhounds melted to shadow. I slashed and stabbed and whirled, and I might have even laughed once or twice—a crazy laugh that scared me as much as it did my enemies. (The Last Olympian, chapter 11)
He goes toe-to-toe against Kronos himself
He dismounted, his scythe glistening in the dawn light. "I'll settle for another dead demigod." I met his first strike with Riptide. The impact shook the entire bridge, but I held my ground. Kronos's smile wavered. With a yell, I kicked his legs out from under him. His scythe skittered across the pavement. (The Last Olympian, Chapter 11)
He destroys the bridge, forcing the enemy to retreat
I stabbed Riptide into the bridge. The magic blade sank to its hilt in asphalt. Salt water shot from the crack like I'd hit a geyser. I pulled out my blade and the fissure grew. The bridge shook and began to crumble. Chunks the size of houses fell into the East River. Kronos's demigods cried out in alarm and scrambled backward. Some were knocked off their feet. Within a few seconds, a fifty foot chasm opened in the Williamsburg Bridge between Kronos and me. (The Last Olympian, Chapter 11)
I think the psychological effects of seeing Percy in action here are really underrated. Before this moment, Will probably started to believe they had no chance of winning the war. But this battle marks a turning point. Yes, the titan army had a huge advantage in numbers, legendary monsters like the Minotaur, and actual titans on their side. But in this battle, Will and the other campers must have realized what it really meant, that they had Percy Jackson. That they had someone who could go toe to toe with the strongest of the titan army and come out victorious. Someone who would come when they called for help. Someone who seemed impossible to kill.
However, afterwards, this whole fight gets overshadowed by Michael’s death.
Michael’s death:
Obviously, Will grieved for Michael. He’d already lost Lee the summer before, and who knows how many other half-siblings. Seeing his brother die in such a way could definitely lead to resentment, no matter how unfair that resentment might be. However, the key word here is could. It's important to consider the context of this scene. One point that often gets overlooked is that Will also saw Percy’s reaction to Michael’s death—and everything leading up to it.
He heard Michael tell Percy to break the bridge. ("Percy, the bridge!" he called. "It's already weak!"(…) "Break it!" Michael yelled. "Use your powers!" (The Last Olympian, Chapter 11))
He heard Percy yell at Michael to get out, before following through with his plan (The remaining Apollo campers had almost made it to the end of the bridge, except for Michael Yew, who was perched on one of the suspensions cables a few yards away from me, His last arrow was notched in his bow. "Michael, go!" I screamed. (The Last Olympian, Chapter 11))
He saw Percy search the wreckage of the bridge for Michaels body afterwards (I turned to thank Michael Yew, but the words died in my throat. Twenty feet away, a bow lay in the street. Its owner was nowhere to be seen. "No!" I searched the wreckage on my side of the bridge.( The Last Olympian, Chapter 11))
He heard him scream out in pain after not finding Michael. (Nothing. I yelled in anger and frustration. The sound carried forever in the morning stillness. The Last Olympian, Chapter 11)
He heard Percy tell the rest of his cabin to continue searching for Michael, despite the fact, that they could be needed in other battles, for the slim chance, that Michael could still be saved, or at least buried properly (I grabbed Will Solace from the Apollo cabin and told the rest of his siblings to keep searching for Michael Yew. The Last Olympian, Chapter 12)
Obviously, it’s still possible, for Will to blame Percy. Grief makes people act irrationally. Especially kids, who are already traumatized and fighting in a war. However, Will’s actions and characterization afterwards make me personally doubt that.
Will’s characterization afterwards:
Shortly, after Michael’s death, Percy and Will drive together to their base to save Annabeth’s life. This is how Will acted once they arrived:
Will and I pushed through a crowd of Athena kids. Will unwrapped Annabeth's bandages to examine the wound, and I wanted to faint (…) Will Solace exhaled with relief. "It's not so bad, Annabeth. A few more minutes and we would've been in trouble, but the venom hasn't gotten past the shoulder yet. Just lie still. Somebody hand me some nectar." I grabbed a canteen. Will cleaned out the wound with the godly drink while I held Annabeth's hand. "Ow," she said. "Ow, ow!" She gripped my fingers so tight they turned purple, but she stayed still, like Will asked. Silena muttered words of encouragement. Will put some silver paste over the wound and hummed words in Ancient Greek—a hymn to Apollo. (The Last Olympian, Chapter 12)
From this bit, we can say that Will seems completely focused on healing Annabeth. He doesn’t bring up the battle or Michael, and he doesn’t react in any way badly to Percy. He simply tries his best to save Annabeth’s life.
I especially want to focus on this little sentence:
“Will Solace exhaled in relief. “It’s not so bad Annabeth.”
This sentence shows us, that Will himself was worried about Annabeth. That Will wanted to heal Annabeth. He wasn’t some paralysed, poor kid, whom Percy forced to leave his siblings behind and heal Annabeth. He was a healer, who pushed down his own emotions to prioritize helping and healing his fellow campers, and who consciously decided to focus on the battle and problems at hand, and deal with his grief later.
His behavior afterwards supports this characterization. Even after he made sure, Annabeth survived (and completely exhausted himself with that effort, might I add), Will continued to focus on how to best treat his fellow campers.
The healing must've taken a lot of his energy. He looked almost as pale as Annabeth. "That should do it," he said. "But we're going to need some mortal supplies." He grabbed a piece of hotel stationery, jotted down some notes, and handed it to one of the Athena guys. "There's a Duane Reade on Fifth. Normally I would never steal—" "I would," Travis volunteered. Will glared at him. "Leave cash or drachmas to pay, whatever you've got, but this is an emergency. I've got a feeling we're going to have a lot more people to treat. (The Last Olympian, Chapter 12)
Aside from that, I would also like to shortly consider Will’s POV regarding Percy during the rest of the war.
I imagine that for a healer, like Will, who saw one injured demigod after another, seeing Percy completely uninjured, fighting and fighting and fighting, killing hundreds of monsters all on his own, barely allowing himself to take a break, while attacking a drakon, and fighting enemies like Hyperion, must have been like a beacon of hope in a way. Like a reminder, that they could actually win. That he wouldn’t lose all of his friends. A sign to not give up.
Percy’s promise from the gods:
Another thing, which I think is quite consequential to consider to judge the relationship between Percy and Will, is Percy’s demand from the gods.
I could see Will becoming bitter, had Percy wished for something for himself after they had won the war. If Percy had become a god, while the rest of camp received no prize whatsoever and if the death of his siblings had meant nothing in the long run, I could see Will starting to resent him.
However, Percy wished for nothing, which solely benefitted himself. Annabeth received the chance to redesign Olympus, Grover became a lord of the wild, Tyson received a weapon, but Percy received nothing like that. The only thing he wanted was the reassurance that the war, Will has lost so many of his siblings on, and which had forced him to grow up so fast, could never repeat itself. The reassurance, that Lee’s and Michael’s and everyone else’s sacrifice was not in vain.
No one can tell me that this did not mean a lot to Will and only strengthened their relationship to each other.
Post The Last Olympian:
My last point is this moment from the beginning of the lost hero:
“Annabeth!” A guy with a bow and quiver on his back pushed through the crowd. “I said you could borrow the chariot, not destroy it!” “Will, I’m sorry,” Annabeth sighed. “I’ll get it fixed, I promise.” Will scowled at his broken chariot. Then he sized up Piper, Leo, and Jason. “These are the ones? Way older than thirteen. Why haven’t they been claimed already?” “Claimed?” Leo asked. Before Annabeth could explain, Will said, “Any sign of Percy?” (The Lost Hero, chapter 3)
Will was the first person to ask about Percy out of everyone else present and didn’t even wait for Annabeth to answer Leo’s previous question. That doesn’t really sound like a person asking about a guy he resents, or feels neutral about. To me at least, it sounds like a guy who is worried about a friend.
That’s at least my interpretation of their relationship, up until this moment. (Though again, I am quite biased, because, I really love their friendship potential)
#This post is way too long#i love them your honor#There are so many possible friendships that deserve more focus in PJO#I will go down with this friendship#will solace#percy jackson#the last olympian#pjo#percy jackon and the olympians#rick riordan

abt percy jackson's middle name - a long post
let's talk about percy's middle name, its implication and what is my headcanon for it!!
first a warning!! i know very little abt actual greek mithology. i've tried to read my copy of odyssey and illiad a total of 10 times and i CANNOT for my life understand that shit. having said that, my mythos knowledge is based on hours on wikipedia sources pages, greek miths articles and more. anyways, this will have spoilers of the Percy Jackson Universe by Rick Riordan.
having been warned, I should start with one point:
percy doesn't have a middle name in canon. From what we've known it's never mentioned a middle name at all, wich is not very uncommon in the PJO universe, as most character do not have one (from the top of my head the only ones that canonically have one are Rachel and Reyna (Rachel Elizabeth Dare and Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano))
BUT in most fandom fanfics that feature his middle name, he is called Perseus Achilles Jackson. Again, it is not canon, but it is so common that most people think it is true. Unfortunately, it doesn't make sense.
It's canon that Sally was the one that named Percy, and she chose Perseus, a son of Zeus, as her choice because he was one of the only Greek heroes that in most versions of the myths get to live a long and relatively happy life after their adventures. From what I've known most times Perseus dies of old age or ascends as a constellation along with his mother and his wife, Andromeda.
Now, what are the implications that we know of?
this will be mostly speculation and head canons, so beware!!
i don't think Rick Riordan ever stated, but it is possible to draw parallels between Percy and Annabeth with Perseus and Andromeda, essentially in their first quest, even more in the series. The same is possible to associate with other characters with names derived from Greek myths.
and, until now, all of Percy's quest he has come back alive, even if the world was ending or if he has gone trough Tartarus, he has come back alive.
As it stands in canon, it's often said that names have power !! saying gods, monsters or others names will call their attention, or give them power. it could be associated that those names with History, or a Legacy HAVE more power and purpose behind them. Ex: Castor and Pollux, Jason, could even say Leo etc.
that is great, and reforces that its possible Sally did something right about the naming.
now, next part is a FULL BLOWN HEAD CANON!!
to me, his full name is Perseus Ulysses Jackson. let me tell you why.
Ulysses = Odysseus
Ulysses comes from Odysseus, yes, the Greek hero hated by Poseidon from the Odyssey. Why would Sally do that? Same reason of why Perseus.
Odysseus, despite all his Odyssey, came back home. In the Odyssey, is said he will live the rest of his life peacefully, and apparently he lived mor 10 years as Ithaca's King. There is another myth where he is killed by his son with Circe, but ignore that for this post.
I think it would make sense for the way they both lived that even if Poseidon hated him, that Sally would have her son named after a hero and a general that even after everything he went trough he still made home, still had people who believed in him, even if Sally herself were not there to see him, like Odysseus' mother, at least he would be alive.
Someone that is selfish in a way if that means he lives. In the same way Sally calls herself selfish for trying to have Percy with her for more time during the years before TLT. For that she endured Gabe.
Not that she knew that of course, but the fates could be at work. I'm always fan of a good foreshadowing.
Now Speaking of foreshadowing, next topic
2. Ulysses - Roman name
Ulysses is the roman version of Odysseus, still has the same meaning and the roman version of the myth is not that different. Why roman, then?
First, because my Odyssey copy was with the Roman names and I was very pissed at that when I was 12 and tried reading it for the first time and discovered that the FUCKING ODYSSEY MAN WAS NOT CALLED ODYSSEUS IN MY VERSION, to my frustration.
ANYWAY, second point: Percy has a connection to the Roman since the first book.
In his classes with Chiron, Percy fights in Roman armor, swords and has Latin classes, and while that is all good and cool, i always found it strange of Chiron to teach Latin, and not Greek. Of course, it could be a ruse of Chiron to distance Percy even more from his greek side, while still helping him learn about the world. it could be nothing.
but to me is not nothing.
Percy has a weird facility with Latin at 12 that Jason did not have with Greek at 16. And while it could be argued that they did not have their memories, Percy was a 12 yo boy that CURSED IN LATIN in a time of distress. I bet they did not have classes about "How to curse in Latin" and i doubt Percy searched for that somewhere.
Percy is very connected with the Roman side of the demigod world, he feels drawn to New Rome, goes to the Roman Uni and he gets so wrapped in it he becomes PREATOR in like a week!! while Jason spent months on the Greek side.
Percy has a lot of participation in Both sides of the demigods being a kinda important figure in both camps.
now, a subtopic.
Percy Jackson: Son of Neptune
Percy is presented as a son of Neptune from the get go in camp Jupiter, wich he doesn't protest at any time (from what i remember), the thing is Poseidon IS different from Neptune specially their roots.
Poseidon is primarily the god of the sea. Neptune is the god of rivers, springs, and waters.
Technically, Percy should not have control of any type of water or rivers, his father is the god of SEA, saltwater. Even then, he can control even the rivers in the Underworld. He has such control of "water" that he can control ALL LIQUIDS! That is not Poseidon's domain, the control of Waters is Neptune's.
knowing this i like to believe the following.
Percy is the son of both Poseidon and Neptune. Don't ask me the logistics, i wouldn't know, and i don't care. HOWEVER when you add things up, it makes sense, in my head, at least.
In conclusion, Sally associates her son's fate with two heroes that go trough MANY hardships but get back home, are strong and live kind of happy lives after that. One of them is mainly Greek, being his first name, what he is primarily called. The other is Roman, it is there, but it's not mentioned, but it still is his name, and it gives him power.
Specially, when you think that the roman counterparts all have a child, except Neptune. Pluto has Hazel, Hades had Bianca and Nico. Jupiter had Jason, Zeus has Thalia. Poseidon has Percy, Neptune has no one? seems unequal and unbalanced in a way the gods wouldn't allow.
Not only that but why would Neptune "claim" or let be claimed a son that wasn't his when Rome hasn't been grateful or careful with him? His last child was scorned (i don't remember the name but it's said that they were basically blamed for earthquakes or something in the 1900)
as the series goes and percy draws MUCH MORE POWER from rivers and other liquids than from the ocean, and the time it took for percy to be born he could be powerful from both sides. he is the first demigod of Poseidon in 70+ years, but he is the first demigod rrom Neptune in 100+ !!!
it makes sense that even if he is called a greek, as his name evokes, he is connected and powerful on his Roman side. It is not a coincidence that people thought he was a god when he first arrived in Camp Jupiter.
It's a tribute for both his Roman and Greek sides, to invoke the names and fates of two powerful kings that are burdened with responsibility, and that learned and lived after their quests.
i could talk about this for hours, specially if Epic's Odysseus by Jorge Rivera-Herrans is taken in account (wich I am doing) but I will not elaborate
anyway, Percy's middle name is Ulysses and I'm right, idc.
