the bangers of the year of our Lord 1666
was wasting time on twitter again and saw this prompt
"tweet like it's 1666"
and I started thinking, what was the music culture of the time like? well a LOT of forgettable opera. Like, formulaic garbage. but there were still a lot of gems,
so for fun, & you're feeling depressed b/c of the Great Fire of London, a throwback to the (16)60s

Yours Truly (as you know, that's my face, duh) gazing, puzzled, at the most unflattering portrait of a certain Dutchman to be found on Wikimedia Commons.
...When offline-life curiously intersects with blog-related things; true story.
So, here I am, having to prepare an overview of the Battle of the Boyne as Gaeilge (o the irony) and drafting a short talk about dance as a political medium in the late 17th century using the example of Lilliburlero in Playford's 1690 English Dancing Master (which I could write out and put on the blog if anyone is interested).
Still, I am asking myself what I did for this man to haunt me off-line...

Workshops at Ligaya Garden
I’ve not often promoted our workshops on this website before. To be honest, I’m not good at promoting stuff at all but we have to live and learn. So from now on, I’ll be letting everyone know about upcoming talks, tours, walks and workshops on our new Events page. We presented a great herbal workshop at Andrew’s Urban Farm not long ago. Anyways, here’s the first for this year – Intro to Home…

went to a new dance group, made a significant dent in the average attendee age, realised about half an hour too late that the guy tactfully asking me, 'so, which side would you prefer to dance?' was probably trying to figure out my gender, but I in all innocence just told him that I didn't really have a preference ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's dance ball time again... tonight I will be swaying to the music of days long gone... and turn and prance.
in short: tonight I'm gonna party like in... 1699? or so?

Author Night Market - event video
https://karenjcarlisle.com/2024/01/05/author-night-market-event-video/
Tumblr media
Another inaugral, book-specific event. This was my last book event for 2023 was the Author Night Market hosted by Writers SA, Libraries SA, and Playford City Council – and one eagerly welcomed. We don’t have many book-specific events for indie genre/speculative fiction authors.
This was a short event – only three hours – but one of my best ever for sales (in the same time period). It helped it was geared for readers, and advertised by all three of its hosts, so reached a wide selection of them. Most were new (to me) readers, with one reader searching me out to buy the third book in The Adventures of Viola Stewart series (he’d read the other two). I trialled new book merch (successfully), and best sellers were Doctor Jack and Blood Ties.

'Cock Up Your Beaver is a song and poem by Robert Burns, written in 1792. It is written in Scottish dialect and the beaver refers to a gentleman's hat in an era when all high quality men's hats were made of felted beaver fur.
'It was based on an older song, published as "Johnny, cock up thy Beaver". It is widely claimed that this is found in The Dancing Master, a collection of folk tunes published by John Playford of London in 1657. However, this is disputed by Scottish music scholar John Glen who correctly states it first appears in the 1686 edition of "The Dancing Master".'

Playford Ch F: James Duckworth [4] def. Chak Lam Coleman Wong [SE] 7-5, 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Growth. Since their last week's match ended in bakery products, Coleman ensured this did not happen again through his pacing and point construction. However, J. Duckworth used his experience to keep Coleman off balance through the baseline (and made him stay back), even if both moved forward well and also had some working volleys to get themselves out of trouble. As a result, Coleman had his chances with 9 opportunities to break throughout the 2 sets, but J. Duckworth was able to maximize his chances through his 38% break point conversion rate.
A tiny still separated both players in terms of their service games. Coleman scored one more ace than J. Duckworth (6 to 5), but fell short from his first serves by 3%, with J. Duckworth standing out through his 76% first serve winning percentage. On the other hand, Coleman double-faulted just once, but which indicated he might have taken more risks in the second set, but he had 7% more second serve winning rate than J. Duckworth. However, the aforementioned rushes on pressure points also did not help anything to raise his game even further, but was miles better than last week's demolition.
This marked J. Duckworth's second consecutive Challenger title for this year, and Coleman's maiden entrance to the Top 300 by landing at 295 live by the end of the final. Interestingly, both players will continue their journey in next year's Sydney Challenger, where J. Duckworth will face a qualifier while Coleman, who once again received a special exempt for his exceptional performance in this week's Playford Challenger, will face wild card Pavle Marinkov. This might not be an easy feat, but who knows.

£115000 fine after hand amputated by a machine
Mr Christopher Wright, a 59-year-old engineer, worked under Playford packaging at their factory on 10 February 2021. The factory location is at Wrexham Industrial Estate in Wrexham.  How did the hand amputation accident happen?  The operator of a Large case-making machine had previously noticed that one of the conveyor belts had formed a loop needing the service of an engineer to fix it.  So…
