I'll be your water bathing you clean
The liquid piece
I'll be your ether you'll breathe me in
You won't release
Well I've seen you suffer, I've seen you cry the whole night through
So I'll be your water bathing you clean
Liquid blue
I'll be your liquor bathing your soul
With juice that's pure
And I'll be your anchor you'll never leave
Shores that cure
Well I've seen you suffer, I've seen you cry for days and days
So I'll be your liquor demons will drown
And float away
I'll be your father, I'll be your mother
I'll be your lover, I'll be yours
I'll be your lover, I'll be yours
I'll be your lover, I'll be yours
Yours

I’ve probably mentioned it before, but one of the things that disappointed me about Amy not being a playable character in Sonic Mania is seemed like a wasted opportunity. Now a lot of people will instantly quote the Advance games as to why it was such a mistake (there are a few users here who have already made plenty of argument for that angle), but I had a fairly different stance myself.
A combination of my dislike of Amy’s hammer and Mania purposefully being a truthful revisiting of the original Genesis/Mega Drive formula as  well as being presented as a game built for the Saturn gave me a strange little hope. This hope was further amplified when I found out that Kazuyuki Hoshino would be working as a content advisory or a some such role. Illogical as a hope as it was, I still did nonetheless.
For the sake of just a little more backstory, it should be mentioned that I was one of the lucky kids who played Sonic CD when it first came out on the SEGA CD and that’s when Amy became one of my favorite characters. From then to Sonic Adventure I found myself constantly hoping for her to me made playable one day with Sonic R not quite doing it fro me and her redesign in Adventure not sitting well for. Fortunately back then I didn’t mind her hammer and enjoyed trying to hammer-vault as much as I could when playing her levels. The downside was that she didn’t play anything like what I came to Sonic games for with Heroes being the closest I’d ever get to my desire that I’ve had since Mania’s announcement.
What it was that I hoped Mania would do for Amy was to build her as if she would have been made playable back in a main game before she was given her hammer.
Naturally that did not come to be and no one I conversed with ever shared or understood my sentiment. The love of her hammer and people seeing it being as integral to Amy as Tails and Knuckles’ namesakes left many a person calling me crazy or saying go play Advance 1 so you can see why she should play like that instead of as just another Sonic clone with a different ability. It didn’t matter how much I argued or explained my viewpoint, I should have just gone and played Advance 1 and fall in love with a gameplay style that to me is so fundamentally differernt as to be a completely different game. Now I’ve heard the arguments plenty of times too about how it’s fundamentally the same, but I’ve never seen it that way. To wit I made a comparative triangle one time show why it bothered me so much
     Jump          /\        /__\ Run       Roll
Jump            /\          /__\ Run           Swing Hammer
To me this just doesn’t look the same, and doesn’t even expand the same way through jump actions as it instead expands through hammer actions. It ends up looking like combat versus movement to me which just sits wrong to me since Sonic debuted as a platformer that encouraged memorization to speed run the levels, not stop and pick fights like in Sonic Heroes. That and telling me to swing a weapon to move instead of attack just doesn’t seem intuitive to me
ANyway, this long meandering rant isn’t to convince anyone to change their minds about it so much as it is just me getting it off my chest after being reminded about it again. I know no one shares my viewpoint, and as it is unlikely that Hoshino will again have reason to put his mind back in that 1995 mindset I doubt it will ever come to fruition. I guess at this point I’m just trying to put a dead dream to rest so i can move on. i don’t know anymore, it’s what happens when I start ranting without any clear idea to what I want to say.
