the buddie playlist, pigeonxp edition.

for a smidge of context, some of the songs are not specifically buddie coded to me. some of the songs can be considered specifically eddie or specifically buck coded, such as My Kink is Karma, which i (in the context of this playlist) consider eddie specific. there are a few like this but the majority is buddie specific.

as another mention, this is my opinion only, hence the title. i am open to suggestions to this playlist and it is always ready to be added to.

okay. i’m going to go in order with the poll so foreigner’s god will be last but i have a Lot of thoughts about that one so it might be the longest rant lol!

allies or enemies — the crane wives:

this song definitely fits my interpretation of his inner conflict in his arena, which will be explored much more in second chapter of the beetee fic, but in short, he had an ally during his games who died in front of him. before that, he had the misfortune of having a relationship similar to rue and katniss’ with her. the ally was a dead ringer for his younger sister adeline; black hair, dark eyes, they were even the same age. watching her die was for obvious reasons insanely traumatic, and it made him question exactly who his ally had been to him.

devil’s advocate — the neighborhood:

this entire song is about the voice inside your head telling you you’re not good enough or that you’re a lost cause, which is basically exactly what beetee thinks of himself, mainly because of other people’s perceptions of him. he get better later on at changing his own opinion of himself, but it takes a lot of personal growth so.

also he is plays the devil advocate A Lot because he loves provoking arguments (and pissing people off. that too.)

nobody — mitski:

this relates a lot to how beetee tries so hard to be what his mother wants but never fitting it because (as he later figures out) he will never be her sister. it doesn’t help that he looks so much like her either.

it also touches on the feeling of alienation (which i will talk about way more in the foreigner’s god section) that beetee feels commonly.

2Econd 2Ight 2Eer - will wood:

this is the easiest song to explain: it makes no sense and beetee doesn’t either. he’s also kinda crazy so the song really does fit insanely well.

foreigner’s god — hozier:

foreigner’s god is all about colonialism and the alienation and isolation people feel towards one’s own culture that results from it. beetee is latino on his mom’s side, french on his dad’s. his parents never made him feel different for it, and he learned both spanish and french at home, or at least the snippets that still exist in Panem. the problem was that he learned the hard way that you didn’t speak another language traditionally of an oppressed group outside of your own home. french was okay; the peacekeepers from One thought it was fun since they had to learn french at the Academy. spanish… not so much. he was treated with his first experience with the whipping post because of it. he was eight.

but it’s also about isolation, in many forms. he’s the oldest of his siblings, doesn’t have many friends due to going to a school outside of the Stills, doesn’t even really feel connected to his parents. he's a child of mixed ethnicity who has darker skin than most of his siblings (and most people in Three, for that matter), whose so smart it’s commonly isolating, whose the only kid from the Stills who went to a school in Stepanov, who was the first person from the Stills to earn a full ride scholarship to Three’s college (or an offer to go to college at all). the constant feeling of being separate from who would be his peers under normal circumstances has made him feel isolated and constantly “other”.

Explanation of image/astronomy metaphor under the cut:

The image shows the binary star system (two stars that orbit each other) Sirius A and Sirius B. Sirius is one of the most well known stars (colloquially known as the Dog Star) as it is the brightest in the night sky, while Sirius B is 10,000 times dimmer than Sirius A but is still detectable via telescope and through its gravitational attraction to Sirius A.

Sirius A is what's known as a main sequence star, a star that is still fusing hydrogen into helium and is considered "alive". Sirius B is a white dwarf, a star that no longer produces fusion. It's at the end of the star life cycle, a "dead" star.

Sirius B was initially more massive than Sirius but used up its fuel, expanding into a red giant as the layers were blown apart, before eventually collapsing into a white dwarf. None the less, they remain gravitationally bound to one another in a binary system.

Fun fact: the material ejected from red giants often helps form new stars!

When I was listening to the podcast, I heard about Michael and immediately he was an eldritch entity in my mind, he was the true form of the Gods, he was just pure condensed energy giving off light. Was he a person once? Maybe, but he’s also just like that and no one really questions it.

However clearly when I see the actual description for what he looks like (a guy with scribbles for a head) I completely disregarded that! Well- nicely I did but that gave me the idea for the 15 colors shoved into his light. But, ,:3 he’s not as good as one Matthew I saw that was a bear. That was beautiful lol

But my Matthew! He is just. Energy, light, he is very bright and he does have a human shape to him but the clothes help him keep the human shape because he tends to not always look like that. Also common decency. We at least know he has to have some bit of solids in there to do Matthew stuff but no one really knows. Okay, thank you, goodbye.

Take Me to Church - a fandom classic before it was featured on Crowley's official playlist. A song about someone finding happiness in the love of another person, despite knowing that their relationship is considered a horrible sin by people close to them. I picture this being a song Crowley cries to while drunk (and definitely never in front of Aziraphale)

Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy - a fandom classic before it was featured as a bit of fan service in season two. C'mon, it's Queen, it's about a gentleman (Crowley) taking his (male) lover on old fashioned dates to the Ritz. He drives (the Bentley) and pays before they both go back to his lover (Aziraphale)'s place (the bookshop)

Killer Queen - another fandom classic, usually in conversation with Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy (cause they're both Queen). About someone (Aziraphale) who is "well versed in etiquette" and "extraordinarily nice." Gee, what queen do we all know and love who is kind but particular...

Fallen Angel - a song sung by someone who loves a fallen angel and wishes they could protect them from all their pain and trauma, especially because they know said fallen angel tries to hide their pain to protect them

From Eden - another fandom classic, frequently used in the joke that Crowley gets drunk and complains about his life to artists who then write songs about him. I mean, it's about the serpent of Eden and their devotion to someone with banger lines like "innocence died screaming, ask me I should know"

One Headlight - something about how when everything is going wrong, and your world is crumbling around you, but you force yourself to "drive it home with one headlight." Reminds me of Crowley before Armageddon...

A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square - absolutely no work was done here whatsoever

Like Real People Do - something about how, just for a small time, you and a lover can ignore what you are and pretend to be two humans in love (with no other complications or responsibilities)

Work Song - the singer talks about feeling like they've done horrible things, but were able to find respite in a lover who doesn't ask or judge them for what they've done. "In the lowlamplight I was free, Heaven and hell were words to me"

What A Wonderful World - part of Aziraphale's official playlist. Something about how a central theme of Good Omens is the beauty of the world and humanity (even with all its flaws), and that this song has become one of the definitive celebrations of the world

I had a hilarious TRT-related hiccup earlier today when I was seeing a museum with a friend who was in the area.

So we met up, and she and her partner hop into my car. Naturally, I have some music playing softly in the background, specifically the official TRT playlist cause I wasn't thinking and had Matt and Jane on the brain. And after a few songs, as we're driving to the museum and chatting, she, in clearly somewhat puzzled tone, is like, 'what is this you're listening to?' because there's a really random assortment of styles on there thanks to recs from me, all ya'll, my sis, and spotify itself.

And my brain... stalls.

Because these people in the car are Friends but not Fanfic Friends and neither of them even know what fanfiction is. And any explanation will potentially launch a cascading wave of further fanfic explanations until I'm eventually discussing Star Trek slash back in Ye Olden Fandom Times (TM) or knowing me going further back to Dante's Divine Comedy in the 1300s, which was not a powerpoint presentation we had time for. Yet, 'yes this is a 9 hour playlist put together by me and a bunch of readers of my stuff, and by stuff I mean a really long free story I've written based on a tv show simply because I am obsessed, no I do not know all of them personally but we all talk regularly and they bring me songs for the fic sometimes like cats laying birds at the feet of their humans only instead of feeling shock and horror I am delighted and have collected them for the past 3 years and that is why my playlist is gloriously broad in style and scope' is also likely to launch us into explanations we do not have time for. Lying never occurs to me.
