The issue I have with Watcher TV isn't that they're moving to their own streaming service to try and make more money.

It's that they didn't try anything else first.

These guys literally just figured out that saying "like and subscribe to the channel" works to get engagement and subscriptions. They documented this realization on recent episodes of PodWatcher.

the podwatcher abt the april incident pissed me off so unreasonably bad sjshhshshsh. i do go to bat for these boys more than i probably need to BUT i know it's because people were so nasty to them for the wrong fuckin reasons.

the delicate way the guys approached that episode was really hard for me to listen to. just them saying over and over again that they're sorry, they lost sight of the fans... how it took this long to talk in-depth about because it weighed heavily on them, and you could hear it in their voices and see it on their faces... but also them gently explaining that they never did it out of greed—NO FUCKING DUH!!!! creatives do not continuously pour everything they have into their creations when they're looking for a quick buck.

but my god, the way so-called fans treated them like the decision wasn't, at the most, a mistake or oversight. the ways people tried to frame it as something so malicious that it warranted personal attacks. the way racist assholes scapegoated steven for everything, when all three of them accepted fault (while also noting that steven's shows are generally cheaper to make than the other's).

it's frustrating to see creators demonstrate their values and morals through the things they share with the world, and people ignore that because they're too busy feeling slighted. it's frustrating having to hear the guys explain their original vision for the channel when it was always right there for anyone to see had they used their fuckin eyes.

for me, it's not that people were sad about potentially losing something they loved—that was never my issue. but "fans" also got so mad that they found a way to ignore what made them love the content in the first place, to justify saying the cruelest, most self-righteous shit abt people who have always focused on creating an inclusive, genuine community for other freaks and weirdos and passionate creators.

i thought that community was mostly cool. but it turned out the pool i was chillin in was rampant with racist selfish asshole barracudas who don't make anything at all yet have all the opinions on how creations should be consumed. like i know watcher appreciates any and all support from fans new and old. i know they're eager to make things right and whole, and i know that's the right outlook to have. it's healthy for everyone. but personally, the spiteful, frigid cunt in me hopes the nastiest bitches don't come back to the fandom now that they can get their ~blorbos~ for free again, and feel righteous in doing so. i don't ever wanna be chill with those guys.

Idk if anyone is actually wondering about what's going on with Watcher's Patreon but I figure that as a long time Patreon supporter and a person interested in facts, I could shed a little light.

On the day of the streaming site announcement, they posted a very long post explaining in detail what changes the Patreon will go though and why. They outlined the new reward tiers and told the patrons the changes would take effect on 4/22. They also thanked everyone for their support and said that they would understand if people couldn't support the Patreon and the streaming site. They offered a 40% discount on the streaming site.

They also posted the final Watcher Weekly +, which will not be continuing. It will be replaced by PodWatcher +, which I understand to be an extension of regular PodWatcher.

They also posted a slate for the new streamer, stating "we don't want anyone to feel like they're making a blind decision"

For a few days there was nothing, then today (4/21) there was a (suspected to be) scheduled post reminding everyone of the changes to reward tiers.

About an hour later, they posted saying that the podcast would be postponed this week, and they hope we understand, and they are excited to share the episodes with us. The comments were disabled on this post only.

Okay that's the facts.

It needs to be said that there are a few patrons commenting that they are upset about paying a year membership and then having the reward tiers changed to things they don't care about, and that is totally valid. Watcher or Patreon needs to refund these people ASAP, and in my opinion information about refunds for annual subscriptions should have been brought up by the Watcher team. This is really the only criticism I've seen on the Patreon that hasn't been shared a hundred times already, that's why I'm stating it here.

I've seen a lot of exaggeration and speculation on the state of the Patreon, so I just thought I would add some perspective. I've also seen some saying that they are "silencing critique" by disabling comments on the most recent Patreon post. Which is silly, the comments on the other posts they've made this week are still open and there are plenty of negative comments there. Some positive ones too.

Steven Lim: He's so resilient. His experiences socially have made him so that even his trauma responses to being bullied and pranked as a kid are compassionate and reflective. He is always endeavouring to be better than he was the year before. He is loyal beyond belief and honestly, if I had known more people whose faith guided them into kindness, acceptance and self-sacrifice the way it does for him, I'd have a whole different perspective on religious belief as a whole. He's also funny in a way you can't train into someone and I also like how he navigates social situations in the most relatable way. He makes PodWatcher the most fun for me.

Ryan Bergara: He's forever curious in a way that makes me believe youth in anyone can be preserved in the spirit. I don't know how to make it clear to the world that I might just let this man get away with murder. He probably would have a good reason idk lol but facetiousness aside, he's a damn hard worker. Like I find work ethic in a person to be such an attractive thing. His hyperfixations are unapologetic and it makes me genuinely respect him. He's beautiful both on the inside and out and his form of comedy is so unique that sometimes it's like a car crash I can't look away from. He aspires to do good by others and he has such a strong principled perspective on his relationships with his family, spouse and friends that he has what I truly believe, is a hero's heart. He's brave in a way that defies logic and all his pathological barriers.

Shane Madej: He aspires so much be kind that I can sometimes see how the effort paralyses him to be more proactive socially. His curiosity is only paralleled in Ryan but he has such a very visible love for the world, for humanity, for stories that I can understand why people find him charming and soothing and I can understand that that is the reason he doesn't mind spending a quarter of his career hunting for ghosts because it's more about the experience of traveling and being with friends and doing a job that brings joy to other people than it is about being right. He feels like someone you could trust with a secret whether low stakes or high. I like that he has a unique voice when he sings and he's leaned into it to the point where 30% of his career is now singing.

Thank you again for asking this, Em. It gave me a nice opportunity to detangle myself from my own threads of hurt and upset to remember the reason I'm here and why I have been since 2018.
