A Polar bear on sea ice is floating towards the sunset. The Arctic ocean is filled with sea ice as far as the eye can see. Colors glow in yellow and orange of the sunset, just above the horizon. Through the clouds shine the sunrays. The polar bear looks over the Arctic sea ice. That animal is an apex predator, which uses the sea ice for hunting their favorite prey, which is seals. Indeed a polar bear spends most of its life on sea ice to find food. If hungry, a polar bear will eat anything it finds. From vegetation, birds, and even human garbage. Would you have guessed that? A polar bear especially needs icebergs as a platform to find its prey. Polar bear week! Polar bears are fascinating mammals, perfectly adapted to living in the Artic! Their thick fur with its well insulated underur later and shaggy guard hair protects them from heat loss- whilst under all that fur they have a layer of fat that can measure up to 4.9 inches. Perfect to keep them insulated in even the coldest of waters. Interestingly a polar bears skin is actually black- and it’s fur isn’t white at all- rather each shaft of hair is pigment free and hollow, allowing it to reflect visible light- much like the environment in its snowy region. Unfortunately these fascinating creatures face a huge danger- and that danger comes from us. As global temperatures keep rising the sea ice that Polar bears depend upon to live and hunt keeps melting, and many polar bear populations simply don’t have enough food and land to survive. Unless we seriously cut our carbon emissions now, all but a few of the northern most polar bear populations will be whipped out by the end of the century. That’s in 80 years. That’s a human life time. So please if you can support charities like @polarbearsinternational to help them with their great work they do protecting polar bears and the land they live on. And if you’re in the U.S please vote for a party that’s going to make a positive difference for the environment. “Here I Am” By Jennifer Sanchez I titled this illustration after the song from Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron. In honor of #PolarBearWeek, I wanted to work on something to show how important it is when it not only comes to global climate change but also the animals being affected by it and not just from poaching, hunting and much more. So I thought why not see how polar bear’s situation really is. As you can see the polar bear is trapped in a snow globe while watching not only the viewer but it own home in the arctic melt away. She can only watch as her home disappears before her. He looks tiny (zoom in) but in reality Polar bears are large animals. The Polar bear in front of the Nordenskiöld glacier in Svalbard. The impressive Polar bear seems like an ant compared to it. The polar bear searched the whole island he was strolling on that morning. The Polar bear stands in front of the glacier far on the right-hand side, creating the perfect opportunity for this wildlife photograph. This positioning and scene create an ideal composition and is, for sure, appealing – showing a massive Polar bear that stands in front of a colossal glacier. Some Facts About Polar Bears * Their habitat and range lie primarily within the Arctic circle. * The skin is black. However, the hair seems to be white, but it is transparent. * It is one of the largest carnivores in the world. * Polar bears keep warm due to nearly 10 cm / 3.9″ of blubber under the skin. * Seals Polar bears eat the most. * Polar bears have 42 teeth. * Females generally weigh half as much as males do.
