inspired by that one post talking abt will's letterman jacket alluding to him being on a sports team + i gave him a matching mike <3

when hopper and mike need to perform cpr on will in the upside down, paralleling the end of season 1, and hopper tells mike to breathe into will's mouth on three --

-- and in that moment, mike is thinking back to november 6th, 1983, the day that will was taken to the upside down. he's having flashbacks to when will's fake body is retrieved from the quarry, and to the moment where he is riding back home, sobbing. he's thinking about that fight him and will had in the rain, many summers ago, and apologises in between sobs and gasps for never bringing it up after that, even though he knows that will can't hear him. it parallels hopper thinking back to sarah's death in season 1.

the scene isn't long enough for mike to say all the things that he wants to say (heck, he doesn't think there would ever be enough time to tell will everything).

however, just before mike can utter the words "i love you", will wakes up with a jolt. before being able to comprehend his surroundings, will falls into the arms of the person closest to him (mike), breathing and heart rate rapid, a parallel to l/max in season 4.

as hopper retrieves an oxygen mask from his bag, mike just continues to sob as he tries to form coherent sentences (all things along the lines of "you're alive!" and "i thought i lost you.") while clutching will desperately.

ok. a genuine question. how do u guys write 20-30k *chapters* bc i will outline fics minutely or i will just let myself start writing based off a vibe & either way i will get 600 words out of maybe. two hours of work. on a good day with no distractions/interruptions, & i very much do not have an uninterrupted two hours to write very often, so you can imagine how slowly things get written T_T so i’m interested if there’s any aspect of any of your writing processes that really enables u guys to write so much or if it’s not really something you think about? anyways i really like ur guys’s work, & thank you for deciding to write for byler bc i know me and a lot of people enjoy it a lot. thanks!!

hello !! this is a super valid question and i’ll try my best to answer it for you 😗✌️

andi infamously writes a lot faster than thea and i do (she finished draft 1 of chapter 3 in like. two days. which was so scary. i’m in awe of her fr) but she has also spent a lot of time editing ch3 so it’s definitely not like these chapters are publish-ready in a short amount of time by any means! it took thea a couple of months total to fully write + edit ch1 and it took me about 3.5 weeks to write ch2 and another two weeks to edit it which is part of the reason we’ve spaced out our posting schedule like we have — we put a lot of effort and care into these updates and we want to give ourselves as much time as possible to get ahead before all 3 of us inevitably get so super busy with work and/or school in the fall!! so while we do write a lot, please don’t think we are so insanely speedy about it because unless we are having Really Good Writing Days, that’s definitely not the case. sometimes we do have days where we are really in the zone and write more than usual, but at least for me, this is so so so rare. whatever i write in this time gets heavily edited because so much of it was nonsensical brain vomit LOL

as far as writing process goes, i think one of the things that motivates us a lot is that we genuinely do just talk about this au constantlyyyyy like we’re always coming up with silly little hcs or drawing for it or adding to the Lore ™️so we’re always getting inspired to write! all three of us are definitely people who use writing as a way to relax or even reward ourselves after a long day; we would probably die if we had to go too long unable to :/ messages like “i can’t wait to get home and write after work today” or “i’m going to write a little bit of ___ before bed because i deserve it” are very commonly found in our gc because we really just look forward to it so much! as for our scary word counts, i feel like there is a lot of worldbuilding in this universe specifically, and pacing is really important to us — we want to make sure introductions and set-up to a scene and character interactions are meaningful and flow naturally, and building tension (which is a hallmark of this fic hehe) does take some time, which can definitely add up word count-wise.

for the most part, none of us usually have a solid few hours to sit and write either (unless it’s on our days off or after work if we’re not too tired) and we get a lot of writing done in chunks! we hold each other accountable for short check-ins (“ask me for a snip in 30 minutes”) which is super helpful when you’re stuck, because it kind of forces you to get Something down without worrying if it’s super polished and edited and perfect. if you’re writing on your own, something i’ve started doing lately is setting a 15 minute timer and just seeing how much i can get done in that time, and then setting another and doing it again (up until however much time you have to write that day). i’ve found that the artificial deadline helps break the monotony of sitting in front of your computer for Hours on end with nothing to show for it bc TRUST we’ve all been there and it sucks so bad 😔✊

this got super long so i apologize but i hope at least a little bit of it was helpful! it definitely helps that we are constantly feeding into each other (i.e: having brainrot) and offering inspiration and advice, which does wonders for creative flow tbh. we’re definitely not cranking these chapters out as quickly as people might seem to think — thea started chapter four, which won’t be posted for about a month, maybe a week or two ago. i just started chapter 5 — about 6 weeks away — yesterday lol so we do take our time! don’t be scared by the giant chapters, we just had a lot of content we wanted to include in each one and are in too deep to take anything out 🥳🥳 thank you for the question! good luck with your writing we believe in you 🫡

prefacing this to say that one day i’m gonna post fics and make posts with bad takes & people are gonna be like uhhhh look here dude, turns out you also suck. sure! cool! we’re all multifaceted people, in theory, and sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss. I think there are a lot of really talented and interesting people in this fandom. it's all interpretations and headcanons and personal opinions. however. this is what misses for me:

fashion! It shouldn't really matter but ughh 😒 I'm really into fashion and costume design and expanding the imagination to a broader wardrobe (i have secret pinterest boards of ST character fashion aesthetics actually ssssh it's fine). but, Michael "He-Wouldn't-Wear-That" Wheeler. why is mike so often made out to be this hybrid of 2007-esque emo kid and glam rocker? He’s just a dude. That’s why i like him. His 80s teenage rebellion is to stop dressing like a baby accountant/mini-ted exclusively donning the latest Gap window display. He's breaking free from the Sears catalogue but he's not about to go join van halen. Maybe some ripped jeans. Band tees. That leather jacket. exploring creativity in denim. Subtlety mimicking eddie m but not really ever going full metal-head. he might go a liiiiiittle new wave, but not too far. It’s the falsity of insisting on the nail polish and the fucking non-existent rhinestone belt and leather pants and makeup for me as a prerequisite for an accurate mike portrayal. and to me that’s… not mike. It’s maybe the inability to remove the actor’s extra curricular modeling career from the fictional character on tv. Mike is just some dude!! And that’s ok!! folks are not gonna like that one, but that's what they call an informed opinion!! 😎 personal preference, some may scream, but whatever. the planet keeps spinning.

the reddie-fication of byler. I love IT and reddie. Will is not eddie kaspbrak. Mike is not richie tozier. Yeah man, i get it. 80s and gay repression and insecurity and secretly being in love with your best friend. But that’s where it stops. I personally don’t see many similarities between any of these characters. Will is not a jock!! He would never join a sports team!! He is not joining track or working out a ton! That makes sense in the context of the eddie k character (i’m not saying that eddie is a jock lmaoooo god no, i’m just saying that track and running are a believable eddie fanon thing and there’s already a bunch of eddie k stuff i see projected onto will so nahhh). & eddie and richie are at each other’s throats and making bitchy little comments and riling each other up but mike and will do not have that sort of relationship. Yeah, they’re gonna argue and snip at each other but it’s a different flavor, it’s a different cuisine entirely. AND ANOTHER THING, why do people put the milkdud dynamic on will/mike. They are not constantly rolling their eyes, exasperated and dismissive with each other either, for the record. They’re genuinely best friends. Where’s the best friendship-ism of it all?!! That’s what makes mike and will such a good pair! The codependency, the longing, the complimentary dynamic, conversationally being on the same page. Ughhhh. 

I feel like so many folks just want sanded down versions of these characters. Where Will is stoic and colder and loses his quick jump into extreme emotions. have him weep, have him be annoyed and jealous, have him tear up. let him be anything but this personality-lacking shell. He is not a quippy badass. He is a mess, sometimes pathetic, he is the personification of ‘do it scared, do it sobbing, do it anyway.’ and mike. Hmm. mike is abrasive, he can be an asshole. Mike cares a lot. Mike’s friends actually like him and value him. He can be all of these things simultaneously. Why is he portrayed in story after story as being this mopey burden, this person they regrettably keep around only to insult and discredit? It’s weird. Why is everyone always threatening him when it comes to his relationship with will? No one is doing that. Kill the shovel talk. Take your fucking shovel and dig a grave and bury it and walk away. Corny ass trope. Why is the fanon portrayal of the party this bunch of meddling kids, overly invested in their two friend’s love lives, placing bets and feeling no shock in 1980-whatever when mike and will get together, exchanging money and being smug? What is that? Corny ass trope. 

Speaking of sanding them down……… to be quite honest, there is so much realistic stuff already out there. wHoLsEoMe. i love sappy stuff, i love slice of life and all that but there comes a point when it feels like the meat of the actual show is something people wished wasn't an aspect?? i get that you can just write whatever you want and have whatever takes you want and that’s cool i guess, but then so much of the personalities of these characters (not just will/mike, the whole damn show cast) has been shaped by the supernatural/horror elements liiiike. It’s there for a reason. That’s the show. So many character traits and motivations and whatnot are because of the setting. I can’t personally separate the canon story from the canon characters. if byler wasn't a factor in ST i would still really really love ST soooo. Idk this is such a vague point but it is what it is, it’s been talked to death and i’m beating the dying horse like a pinata but the prize unfortunately is people accusing you of saying that one heartstopping teen show shouldn’t exist. Ok???? 🤔

The fucking wheeler family. Aren’t they interesting enough without making them the byers 2.0? This point has also been done to death but can’t we just watch the show and see literally what is being portrayed on screen? Middle america flavored conformity in the face of rampant political conservatism in rural indiana in the 1980s and how mike wheeler is fucked up from that environment, creating what he’s got going on internally? That’s not enough of a bold fucking characterization and motivation for you? You gotta make shit up? Idk man. Ted wheeler is not Doing All That. i see so much that just bewilders me. like cool original idea you came up with, cool random post you made. What does it have to do with the ST we are actively watching? The wheelers are kind of what we see is what we get. Idk does my staunchness on this make me boring? I just don’t think it’s necessary to invent shit when we already have so many different family dynamics available to analyze in the actual show. 

I feel like some people saw what mike and will were like in s2 and just. Stopped. Caring? or are interested in character growth whether “positive” or “negative” only in the way that only fits their mental aesthetic? Like it or not (i personally love s3 and i know this is an unpopular view on tumblr.com. it’s not without major flaws, but i still like it a ton) but s3 happened and these are the characters who we have decided to allow total brain infiltration. Characters grow and develop their personalities in this fictional world and where we are as of s4 is worlds away from s2. It’s ok to not think of them as innocent twelve year olds forever…

so a little while back i made a post discussing how i wished stranger things had leaned more into the effect religion would have had on hawkins and the supernatural events that take place there, and especially the effect it has on will as a young gay boy in a small town in middle america in the 80s. and so i decided i wanted to write something about that :-) i honestly don’t plan to publish this one for a while, possibly not until after s5 comes out so i can include whatever we learn about the upside down, but i’m thinking it’ll be a longish oneshot 15-20k, and more self indulgent than anything else. it does feature byler, because i am who i am, but it’s more will-centric and focuses on him in relation to religion and to both el and henry. but this one is sorta on the back burner and i’ve just been chipping away at it little by little

Ahem, so.

I rewatched S4 over the weekend because my sister hadn't seen it yet. She's not a Byler shipper at all, but it doesn't bother her either. I like to watch movies and shows with her for the same reason, keeps it objective.

Anyways, I found very interesting that she was fascinated by the relationship of Eleven/001-Vecna. She said the characters had an enormous chemistry that Eleven lacks with Mike. Even when they had the final confrontation she was adamant that #1 tried to avoid really hurting her until his hand was forced by Eleven. She's pretty sure that's very telling for the finale. She's convinced that Vecna does have a weakness for her.

In my opinion I don't know. I found the relationship very interesting as well at the first watch and I agreed about the chemistry, even when I'm not a big Eleven fan at all (and Vecna is a psycho).

I guess what I'm getting at is -- i mean, considering the insight of a casual viewer:

You're telling me that the Duffer Brothers chose to develop a new relationship with El and the Big Villain that to focus on her relationship with Mike, just because? That they deliberately had Mike focused on his relationship with Will, just to queerbait?

Eleven got her powers back without him. Eleven grew as a character without him. She DID NOT need Mike's I love you to become a superheroe again. And she had chemistry with ANOTHER MALE CHARACTER, GOD FORBID.

Nah, these guys have a plan. Mike could've easily been used to help Eleven with her trauma storyline - just like he did with Will in S2 just to give in with the fan service, but they didn't. THEY DIDN'T.

AND THAT'S VERY TELLING.

My name is Eleanor but you can call me El. I’m bisexual with a strong (strong) fem preference and my pronouns are they/them or she/her! I’m still figuring out a lot about my identity as I have been for the last while, so this info might change periodically if I think something no longer fits me. I am also 16 years old.

I have diagnosed adhd, major depressive disorder, and anxiety. I’ve struggled with them for a long time but i have been taking medication (Vyvanse and Zoloft) that help a lot. I also used to struggle with anorexia and bulimia when I was in middle school, but I’ve been working hard to overcome those thoughts, and I am comfortable talking about my experiences and I am willing to give advice if you ask!

I mainly speak English, but I do know a little bit (I emphasize a little bit) of Croatian and polish since my great grandfather and grandmother came to America from there, so I learned a little bit of those languages to talk to them better as they weren’t English speakers, but that was when I was like 9, so I don’t remember much of it.

I have many hyperfixations, mainly media focused, that come and go. Currently I am very focused on Yttd (your turn to die), but in the recent past some were stranger things, the quarry, and total drama.

I also love shipping, I’m a strong multishipper! I’ll basically love any ship you present me as long as it doesn’t have a noticeable age gap, and isn’t super toxic. Some of my current favorites are alenoah, mkulia, ransara, naosara, shinalice, naoreko, byler, sydina, and tyzula. Those are just a handful of them and tbh I constantly find new things to ship I just love so many.

I made edits that I post on TikTok (@esxvspy) I’ve been editing since I was 11 years old and was super into gacha, I made so many gacha edits… I also draw a bit, and I want to start writing fanfics as well!

For a dni list, I don’t really have anything much - if you like dsmp (especially dream.) literally anyone in dsmp (ESPECIALLY DREAM.) , if you’re pr0sh1p, people who hate on ships are on thin fucking ice, if you’re homophobic or transphobic, and if you push your religion onto other people, like i don’t mind if you’re religious, but don’t try to make others follow your religion. Hello everyone! It's been a hot minute since I've been on here. My queue may be running but I have ghosted Tumblr hard for about... six weeks? I'm so sorry for disappearing.

I just wanted to update you all on where I'm at. Stranger Things means a lot to me. I wrote ADATS as an absolute labor of love, and I still have plans to write more Byler in the future. The number of wips I have is... embarrassing. Having said that, with the recent news that ST will not be released until 2022, I have decided to formally take a hiatus from this blog.

The next time I'm here will probably be once we start receiving official teasers or trailers for S4. As it is, I don't have the time or energy to keep treading water. It's a horrible thing, being in stasis like this, but we are all in the same boat. This brings me to two announcements.

The first is that I will be slowly posting my Byler wips over the next few weeks! When I say wips... I mean wips. They are first drafts of what intended to be multichaptered stories. Maybe one day they will finished. In the meantime, I wanted to give you some new content just to enjoy! I'll work on polishing them up and posting them on my AO3, so keep an eye out.

The second is that I am starting a writeblr for my original story. As many of you know, I am coming to the end of my PhD and so most of my time is spent either researching, writing, or teaching. But my next goal (after my doctorate) is to publish a fiction novel, and that's what I am starting to work on now. It's an idea I have nurtured for many years. I've recently fixed it up and adapted it to a different setting, so it has changed a little, but it's still a story I love, and it's what I want to work on next. I'll be posting the link to my writeblr once I set it up!
