It was another mission. Another nightmarish fire-fight where you almost lost a limb, almost lost a friend, almost lost your life. Twenty-four hours later and you’re back home, safe.
Well, as safe as you can be when your engagement is on the verge of breaking off.
You stare at the simple ring on your left hand. White gold band, a tiny amethyst set to the left of a diamond. There was a nearly identical one lying next to the sink, the only difference being the switched places of the glittering gems.
You know she didn’t do it purposefully. You had both been exhausted after what was supposed to be an in-and-out mission turned into a hostage situation. Daisy did what she always did as soon as you were home — take off her gauntlets, wash her hands in the sink, grab a snack, and hop into a steaming shower.
But you still can’t stop yourself from staring at it, eyes fixed, hands shaking, breath held and mind racing.
You used to join her. You would wash each other’s hair, ease each other’s sore muscles with delicate touches on tender purple-black bruises. She would lean into you, letting you braid her hair and falling asleep in your arms, drifting into a deep slumber. It was intimate, lovely; it was normal and perfect.
Taking a sip of your room-temperature beer, you slide off the cool granite of the kitchen island. You had a new routine after missions now, you just had to get used to it.
You hear the shower shut off, bare feet pad into your cosy bedroom, and the door shut with a loud creak. The minute squeak of the mattress tells you that Daisy flopped into bed.
A ghost of a smile lights your face. It looks more like a grimace, you think, as you check your distorted reflection in the green glass of your beer bottle. Chucking the empty bottle in the recycling, you run a hand through your dirty, salty hair. The comfy sweats you changed into an hour ago would need to be washed, the dirt still adorning your skin rubbing off on the black material. You exhale before heading down the hall towards the bathroom.
The tiled room is filled with steam, the mirror fogged up so that only a blurry outline of your silhouette could be seen. You are unrecognizable.
How fitting.
The quick, cold shower you take does nothing to ease your mind or body. You wipe the mirror in a circle, taking out a first aid kit.
With all your cuts bandaged and the proper creams Jemma had snuck to you and Daisy applied to your fresh bruises, you headed into the hallway in your towel.
Daisy is standing in the kitchen, lilac lounge shorts you bought her last Christmas showing off her tanned and scarred legs. She looks warm and soft, a very different Daisy than the superhero who had broken a mob boss’ legs just hours before. Her hair is wet and in braids. You frown. You always braid her hair.
If she hears you, she doesn’t turn around, so you take a moment to admire her. Ten seconds, that’s all you give yourself. It was a stressful mission, if you stare too long she might snap. From the back, you can’t see the dark circles you know are there, but you can see the tension in her shoulders and the slight tilt of her head as she ponders what to eat.
You say nothing as you go to the bedroom to change. You find a black pair of SHIELD sweats and an old, holey t-shirt you vaguely remember stealing from Fitz. A presence at the doorway catches your attention.
“Hi,” Daisy says tentatively. Your breath caught in your throat, your lungs holding the air captive until Daisy spoke again.
“I missed you.”
Your eyes widened. Maybe tonight wouldn’t end with one of you on the couch, clutching a six pack while the other cried as quietly as possible, tucked into cold, lonely sheets.
“Braiding my hair, I mean,” She clarified. Her fingers twisted together, rigid posture giving away her nerves.
The air felt humid, as if the open window had suddenly sucked all the AC out and let the mid-summer heat in. Your memory flashes to the last time you and Daisy had a normal, happy conversation.
The edges are fuzzy, but the pure joy in Daisy’s chocolate eyes is clear. Fairy lights strung haphazardly around the living room, a movie playing in the background, your lips on hers. Blankets make a ceiling over your head that shut out the rest of the world, this moment was only for you two. You played with the thin metal band on her ring finger, she ran her hands through her hair. Her matching ring scratched your scalp lightly. You both smile as you pull away. You whisper childhood stories, laugh at the funny parts and offer melancholic smiles at the not-so-lighthearted parts. You were happy.
That night you got the call — Lincoln Campbell, yours and Daisy’s best friend, had wrapped his car around a telephone pole coming off of a long shift at the hospital. His blood alcohol was almost .40.
Eggshells littered the house from the time you got back from the funeral. One wrong word, Daisy would snap and spend hours punching a bag until her fingers bled. You would fill those hours with whatever was closer — wine or your car keys. You pulled yourself out of your head, realizing you should answer her.
“I missed it, too,” You breathed.
Daisy made a small, unintelligible noise before collapsing against the door frame. You froze for only a second, your mind racing through possibilities. Was she bleeding internally? Was it her back again? Did she get shot and not notice until now?
You leap over to her, catching her as she crumbles to the hardwood floor.
A quiet sob wracks her chest. Your hands hover over her slouched back, unsure how to comfort her. At this moment, Daisy feels foreign. Her sudden vulnerability alerts you to how she’s been holding her emotions in for god knows how long.
“Daisy…” You start, hesitantly.
Daisy hiccups loudly, another wave of tears washing over her.
“Tell me to leave, I’ll pack my bags,” Daisy cried, “But I don’t, I-I don’t want to lose you!”
Burning tears gather on your lash line, threatening to fall at her words. You never could stand to see Daisy cry.
Your brows furrow slightly in confusion before you realize what Daisy is talking about. After Lincoln’s death, you two had fought increasingly more often until Daisy locked herself away or spent the night at May’s, and you went for drives until your car ran on empty. On those nights, bottles of wine disappeared from the cabinet without a trace.
Daisy sits up, stamping down her sobs, seemingly resigning herself to the fact that you aren’t going to say anything. Her trembling lip and red eyes pierce your heart. The astronomical distance between you two seems atomic now. You reach out quicker than lightning, shushing her cries and rubbing her back.
“Do you want to go?” You asked after a while. Your knees dig uncomfortably into the floor, your shoulder hurts from the ridges in the doorframe.
Daisy sniffles, her hair falling into her face as she looks away. You crane your neck down, carefully tucking her hair behind her ear.
“You know I’m afraid of change, I guess that’s why we’ve stayed the same,” You sigh, your chest constricting and squeezing the broken glass pieces of your heart.
You take a deep breath, steeling yourself to continue, “But if you want to find a new life, someone who loves you better than I do, darling, I understand.”
Daisy is still frozen, stare burning holes in the floor. You’re glad that the two of you are at home, the poly-tectic adaptive materials hidden between the walls keeping the house from collapsing. By the slight groan of the foundation, you can imagine Daisy could bring down a mountain with the amount of pain she’s in.
Which can only mean one thing.
“I’m not enough,” You stated. It wasn’t a question. You glance down, a glint in the low light cast from the lamp on the bedside table catching your eye. She has her ring on…
Daisy finally, finally shakes her head ‘no’. You let go of a breath, guilt building every second that passes. She isn’t happy. You shouldn’t be happy that she’s staying.
“Feels like a lifetime, we’ve been trying to get by while we’re dying inside,” You say, gently.
Daisy snaps her eyes to yours, a desperation in them you recognize as grief.
“So much of the past year has been consumed by grief. We never took time off, we never talked about it. I’ve done a lot of things wrong, loving you being one,” She whispers.
You nod, there is no denying that you each had a part in getting to where you are now. Delicately, you grab her hand. She squeezes it, a rush of small vibrations traveling up your arm. Your chest flutters at the familiar affection.
“So have I,” You assure her. She gradually falls towards you, exhausted. You let her rest her head on your shoulder, her breath evening out as her arms wrap around you. You feel hot tears flow down your face, fall onto her hair. Slowly, you pull Daisy closer to you.
Hours later, the sun peeks over the top of the mountain range in the distance. You had adjusted the two of you sometime around two a.m., no longer able to feel your legs from how the floor cut off your circulation.
Sometime around three, you had gathered the courage to move Daisy to the bed, trying hard not to wake her. She had only turned over and not let go of your hand.
You haven’t slept at all tonight, thoughts spinning until you force yourself to pause and count to ten, only to repeat the pattern.
You know what you have to do. You know what’s best for the both of you. You’ll leave, pack your bags and find a place to stay until you can scrape up enough money to rent an apartment. You’ll go to therapy, learn to live without Lincoln, without Daisy. Eventually, Daisy will heal, too. You both have the team at your backs, no matter what happens. She would be okay.
But you know you won’t. The fear of losing Daisy, of losing your life, your home, yourself stops you. You can’t move on. You can’t move forward.
You know that the big changes it takes to heal could cost you Daisy. So, you stay the same. You give into fear. You’ll never be enough, never love Daisy right, never quite heal fully — and neither will Daisy. But you still stay.
You’ll always stay the same.

halley’s comet and other extenuating circumstances ch. 3
“It’s snowing?”
Lexa nods.
As if she needs to know for sure, Clarke pushes herself up on an elbow, unwashed hair slipping from behind her ear as she pulls back a wispy curtain to expose a backyard full of snow.
read on ao3
She gets the text at six a.m.
Her phone buzzes by her head and she reaches back, frowning unhappily as she uncurls herself from the warmth of flannel sheets and her long-sleeved pyjama top to answer it, cold worming its way under the dips and creases of the fabric.
It takes a moment to find, and another to figure out why it’s tucked upside down into the storage trolley Clarke keeps on the wrong side of her bed for her acrylics, clock and a little vase of fake, dollar store flowers instead of her own nightstand but when she remembers why she smiles.
Winter is awesome.
It’s even better than Fall if Lexa had to rank the seasons — and not just because football season is over. While September gave her her girlfriend and Clarke on the sidelines in her uniform, Winter so far has had Jake working long hours and Abby pulling second third at the hospital and a mutual agreement between both of their parents that being home alone together is better than Clarke being home alone by herself.
It’s meant cash pinned to the fridge, along with a note in Jake’s handwriting to order something other than sticky rice and egg rolls from Haun Garden for dinner and sitting in Lexa’s bedroom beneath glow in the dark stars, all faded and plastic and peeling from the ceiling, swapping answers for AP calculus over cold Pop-Tarts and Coca Cola cans.
(Even better, it’s meant Clarke in Lexa’s Pikachu pyjama pants and pictures for prosperity — one half of a cheap, silver heart necklace from a kiosk at the mall draped around her neck over her t-shirt).
And yeah, maybe Lexa’s Spanish conjugations have veered toward sloppy ever since Clarke started whispering quiet querida’s and mi corazón’s to Lexa under her breath during class — she thinks she might have single-handedly kick-started Señor Moreno’s nervous breakdown the first time she answered a question with sorry, I don’t know — but the kisses traded later, in the alcove outside the arts classroom in B block more than make up for it.
“Clarke,” she whispers, digging her way through the intricate layers of comforters and quilts on the bed until she finds the lump.
It’s a blond lump, tucked cozily into a grey-green Polis High School Cheerleading sweatshirt, pyjama pants and the Christmas socks Lexa slipped into her stocking the day before Christmas Eve, and it squirms unhappily when it’s poked, glaring at Lexa past the edge of her pillowcase with slitted, sleepy eyes.
“What?”
Lexa hands over her phone in reply and Clarke takes it with cold fingers, blinking at the screen as she reads the text from Lexa’s Mom.
Roads are closed. Daddy called the school board and you don’t have school today. Be home for dinner, please. Love you.
“It’s snowing?”
Lexa nods.
As if she needs to know for sure, Clarke pushes herself up on an elbow, unwashed hair slipping from behind her ear as she pulls back a wispy curtain to expose a backyard full of snow. It’s harsh and white in the light from the porch. A thick layer of it sits on the patio furniture and the grass is buried from fence to fence, boxed in on either side by big, sloping mountains, the ice yellow and green and starburst red in the reflection of the Christmas lights still hung up on the trellis.
It’s January now, Christmas is over, but the Griffin’s have a habit of leaving their decorations up well past Epiphany much to the annoyance of Mrs Gardiner across the cul-de-sac who has her lights up and down on a practically military timetable. Jake has been promising to do it for the past two weeks, ever since he went back to work after the holidays but he says it with enough of a twinkle in his eye that Lexa knows they’ll still be up come Valentine’s Day and beyond.
(Lexa is OK with that; when she thinks about sitting cross-legged with Clarke on the porch on February Fourteenth, watching the lights catch in the spun-silk of her hair, she wonders if spite is enough for Jake to leave them up all year round).
“Shit!” Lexa hisses when cold air unexpectedly invades the pocket of heat she’d eked out against Clarke’s mattress. She traps her arms against her chest, pulling the cuff of her sleeve down with her thumb as she watches her girlfriend move around the room in a single chin of light from the open curtain.
A pair of UGG boots are flung out of the bottom of the closet and she frowns. “What are you doing?”
“Going outside,” Clarke tells her from the foot of her bed where she pulls the sheepskin boots over her socked feet.
She looks so pretty in the six a.m. light — so loved and worn in wearing Lexa’s pyjamas and her cheerleading sweatshirt — that Lexa can’t even summon the strength to tell her no when her own sneakers are fished from the depths of the overnight bag she stowed under Clarke’s desk the afternoon before.
Instead, she takes them dumbly, looping the laces around cold fingers and wondering if there’s anything in the world she wouldn’t do for Clarke Griffin.
//
It appears not, she thinks as she follows Clarke downstairs half an hour later, clinging to her sweater sleeve in the pitch dark of the stairwell.
During the day the alcove is lit up — the walls practically a shrine to a gap-toothed Clarke in her powder blue little league jersey grinning proudly from the front of every frame — but now, Lexa struggles to see as she follows her girlfriend through the dark.
Clarke disables the alarm with Lexa’s fingers firmly ensconced in hers, unlatching the patio door, grinning madly as she pulls Lexa with her out into the biting cold, so perfect and complete, it steals the breath straight from Lexa’s lungs.
Cold air worms its way under her t-shirt, raising goosebumps up her arms and she pokes her thumbs into her cuffs to combat it, her shoulders hunched against the chill. She watches Clarke next to her as she shuffles her soggy UGG boots to the edge of the deck and reaches an upturned palm out as far as it will go, watching the flakes settle into the crevices of her skin.
“It hasn’t snowed like this since February,” Lexa says, crossing her arms over her chest to preserve the warmth. The snowflakes in front of them are coming down in thick, wide clusters, unlike the sleet that came before Christmas and turned the football field to slush. They cling like velcro to Clarke’s hair and clothes.
“Since Atom fell in the parking lot and ate ice trying to invite Octavia to the Sadie Hawkins dance,” Clarke remembers, laughing.
Lexa frowns. “Aren’t the girls supposed to ask the guys to those?” She remembers that particular dance in vivid, excruciating detail. How Clarke asked Finn Collins to go with her and how she — forced to go by Anya, the only Junior on the decorating committee — stood in the corner by the restroom all night, watching the little throng of Freshmen slow dance a few feet away, pulling uncomfortably at the stretchy hem of her Forever 21 dress.
It had pretty much been the worst night ever. The crepe paper constellations tacked to the ceiling hadn’t even been astrologically correct.
“They’re supposed to,” Clarke shrugs, blinking up at the sky. Wet snowflakes string themselves like beads through her hair and Lexa itches to reach out and touch them. “No one does though. They just wait for the guys to buy their tickets and like about how they asked them.”
That seems stupid to Lexa — like a whole lot of mental gymnastics just to make sure people think you don’t care. Then again who is she to judge?
“I’d ask you,” she whispers, digging her chin into her shoulder as she looks over at Clarke.
“I’d ask you too,” Clarke grins.
(It sounds a little like something else).
//
When she wakes up again three hours later, it’s light.
There’s a space heater pointing at them from the open doorway — she can see the extension cord snaking away down the corridor — and Clarke is flush-cheeked next to her when she looks over, propped up on her elbows as she scrolls through her phone.
“Hi,” she looks down at her, smiling in the same way as she has done every morning since they started sleeping in each other’s beds.
Her hair is still a little damp around the crown — a shade darker than the rest of her head like damp, wet sand — and Lexa reaches up to tuck a kinky, blond lock away from her eyes, feeling Clarke preen under her touch. “What’s the time?”
“Nine,” Clarke replies. “You’re phone’s been buzzing.”
“It’s just Anya,” Lexa guesses, reaching over to unplug her phone from her charger. Sure enough, it is, Half a dozen Snapchat’s she forgot to reply to tonight — mostly because they were all teasing her about how whipped she is for spending her lunch hour yesterday huddled on the bleachers watching her girlfriend run make-up lacrosse drills — plus a new phone sits on her lock screen. She thumbs the notifications away and presses her camera against the comforter to send a reply. “She’s picking me up at four.”
“Awesome,” Clarke throws her phone down on the mattress. She tosses her hair out of her face as she slides a bare leg over Lexa’s hip and Lexa has to remind herself to breathe.
She thinks remembers Clarke tossing her pyjama pants away in the hours after they went back to bed. It hadn’t seemed like such a big deal then, but now she can feel Clarke’s knee pressed against the bare skin of her waist, everything inside of her feels like it’s on fire.
Honestly, she’d been pretty upset to note that the whole constantly horny side effect of being a sixteen-year-old girl hadn’t gone away when she got a girlfriend to relieve the tension with. If anything, it’s only gotten worse. Like, a lot worse. She wonders if her and Anya’s newfound closeness extends to talking about…this.
“What do you want to do?”
//
What Clarke wants are pancakes.
Lexa sits on the granite countertop with a plastic bottle of her batter in her hands while she bangs pots and pans around in the butler’s pantry and wonders if this is what all the songs mean when they talk about love.
It’s puke worthy to even think about, let alone say out loud; so unbearably cliche for someone so reliant on logic and reason but it feels good not to be striving for something anymore. It’s all still there in the background — track meets, debate, a million AP classes she isn’t even sure she enjoys — but they don’t feel as imperative as they did before. She doesn’t feel like she will fade into oblivion if, one day, she doesn’t want to be valedictorian anymore.
Besides, Clarke makes it feel like it’s OK to think in cliches. Mostly, it’s just the ‘l’ word that’s been knocking around her head recently that has her nervous; she’s no expert, but she’s pretty sure they’re too young and it’s too soon to be feeling something so big and important.
She plants the bottle of pancake batter on the counter when she realises she’s about to peel the label off, picking sticky residue off of her restless fingers.
“Did you know the average snowflake falls at a rate of three point one miles per hour?”
It isn’t snowing anymore. The sky is bright blue and cloudless but every now and again, flat, white chunks will fall from the slope of the Griffin’s roof, leaving powdery piles on the ground beneath the kitchen window.
“Only you would turn a snow day into a physics lecture,” Clarke complains, grinning at her as she emerges from the pantry with the skillet. She plants it on the cooktop and turns on the gas, pouring a dollop of batter into the pan.
“Why should you miss out on learning just because of some anomalous weather?” Lexa teases innocently.
“Oh,” Clarke trills, “someone’s been doing their SAT prep.” She leans across the counter until Lexa can feel her breath against her ear and whispers in a half-cocked porn-star moan: “I love it when you use big words.”
“Ostentatious,” Lexa murmurs back, taking the bait. “Evanescent. Spurious. Anachronistic.”
Clarke giggles sweetly, her cheeks pink and her bottom lip trapped between her teeth. “Keep going,” she requests and Lexa tries desperately to remember the words written on the neon green queue cards tacked to the wall above her bed.
(In other news, she’s pretty sure she’s found a new revision tactic and files that away for later).
“Empirical. Ignominious. Unilateral…Clarke!”
“I didn’t see that one on the list but I’ll go with it.”
“No!” Lexa squeals, pointing at the stovetop in alarm. “Clarke!”
“Shit!” Clarke blanches at the smoking pan, lunging for the handle.
“Don’t touch it!”
“Fuck!”
Taking the kitchen towel from the rail on the oven, Lexa winds it carefully around the handle of the smouldering pan, carrying it carefully to the island where she dumps it in the sink. It sizzles angrily against the water leftover in the breakfast dishes beneath it, billowing smoke in thick, blake waves and Clarke stares at her charred pancake despondently.
“So…Gus’s?”
//
They go to the diner, wrapping up in UGG boots and hoodies, tucking their wallets into their pockets and their ears under their beanies as they trudge through the snow. The smell of smoke is still trapped between in Clarke’s hair and every time she bumps up against Lexa as they walk — cinched far too close together on the otherwise empty sidewalk — she bursts into fits full of giggles, shoulders bouncing under her hoodie.
It had taken three minutes for Abby to call once the smoke alarm went off — screaming loud enough for Lexa to flea to the porch while Clarke stood on the kitchen stool to fan the smoke away from the sensor — and fifteen more for Clarke to convince her the house was still standing.
(“Mom, would I be talking to you from the landline if it wasn’t?”)
She made Clarke promise to stick to takeout and grilled cheese made in the sandwich press and maybe sign up for Home Ecc next semester but eventually, she hung up, telling Clarke she’d see her tonight and Clarke had scraped the remnants of the pancake into the trash before turning to Lexa with a look like a scolded child.
“I didn’t think I’d be seeing you today,” Gus grunts when they enter the diner, looking up from where he stands behind the counter with a mug of thick, black coffee.
For all the time she’s spent with him, Lexa can’t tell if it means he’s happy to see them or not. What she thinks is exasperation one day could just as easily turn out to be fondness.
He refuses to let Lexa take on a shift when she offers now that she doesn’t have school, sitting them in their booth by the window with two sticky menus and two mugs of coffee instead and mumbling something about teenagers being half-naked in the snow when Clarke stretches enough that her bare stomach shows under the hem of her cropped hoodie.
Clarke waits until he retreats to the kitchen with two orders of pancakes scribbled down needlessly on his notepad before she leans over the table conspiratorially, smoke still lingering on the collar of her hoodie.
“I think he’s starting to like me.”
//
Gus cuts them off after their third cup of coffee.
Lexa pushes her mug towards him when he does the rounds with the coffee pot, offering it to the three other customers who have braved the roads that the ploughs are still in the process of clearing but he shakes his head when he stops in front of them, clearing their breakfast plates instead. Lexa’s jaw drops, indignant.
“You’re sixteen. What do you need caffeine for?”
“I take four AP classes,” Lexa fires bag, offering her mug again.
Gus slides it back towards her. “Go outside, Lexa.”
Rolling her eyes, Lexa puts two twenties on the table that she knows Gus is going to put towards her paycheque next month and the two of them slide out of the booth.
Clarke doesn’t want to go home yet. They left the windows downstairs open on their safety catches as Abby told them to but the kitchen still smells like smoke so she pulls Lexa towards the park instead, using her sleeve to wipe the powdered snow from the swing and lowering herself to the rubber seat. Lexa takes the tone next to her, digging the toes of her soggy boots into the ground to stop herself from moving.
Despite the temperature and her breath fanning out in front of her like locomotive steam, Lexa doesn’t feel cold. There’s syrup instead of gloss on her lips and she’s starting to lose feeling in her toes — she wiggles them in the tips of her boots to no avail — but when Clarke leans over, cinching their swings together by the cold, metal chains, Lexa doesn’t think she’s ever felt warmer in her life.
She presses her forehead against Clarkes, the rim of her beanie trapped between them, and feels Clarke’s breath bloom hotly against her collarbone. It feels intimate; far too intimate for the swings in the middle of the morning. It seems like something that should happen as they lie in Clarke’s bed at night, Clarke’s five-fingered grip pressed firmly against the flat expanse of her stomach and backs turned against the open bedroom door — Abby’s rule, not theirs. She shivers.
“Are you cold?”
When she doesn’t reply, Clarke’s snakes an arm around her torso, frigid fingers slipping between her hoodie and the waistband of her sweatpants and Lexa shrieks, bucking wildly against the cold. Her swing lurches sideways, the chain slipping out of Clarke’s palm, and Lexa careens backward, landing with her top rucked up in a pile of wet snow.
For a moment, all she can feel is cold. The cold, harsh kind that slings itself through her veins as the snow soaks the ribbed hem of her hoodie and up into the fabric back of her bra. Then, Clarke’s face is blinking at her owlishly from above, two amused and one part guilty — it only takes her a second to laugh.
“Now I am.”
Apologetic, Clarke’s fingers slip in a circle around her wrist, muscles straining against Lexa’s weight but Lexa leans back with two hands and pulls Clarke down to the snow with her instead. She lets out a scream, kneeing Lexa inelegantly in the crotch when she hits the ground but Lexa thinks she probably deserved it.
“So am I,” Clarke looks at her, chest pressed close enough that Lexa can feel the little vibrations from her giggles through the thick fabric of their hoodies.
Clarke rolls off of her when the mother of a two-year-old in a pom-pom hat on the other side of the playground gives them a tight-lipped look — at the ruckus or at the sight of them cinched on top of each other, Lexa doesn’t know. Curling on her side against the gritty, snowy ground, Clarke shoots her long, farcical faces while Lexa tries to stifle the laughter that rises within her, rolling like waves of champagne bubbles.
It shouldn’t even be funny — it isn’t funny — but every second she spends with Clarke feels like a reason to laugh and it makes her happy in the most perfect way.
When she gets herself under control a minute later, fits of giggles tapering off into snatched, little hitches of breath, Clarke is watching her, lips trapped between her teeth, and Lexa knows she feels the same.
//
“If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?”
They’re clean and dry now, curled together like two halves of a closed shell against the rumpled sheets of Clarke’s bed.
She had dragged Lexa upstairs once they got home — shivering and cold in their wet, snowy clothes — and while everything inside of her had rebelled when Clarke reached for her pyjama pants and fleece to climb back under the covers, the temperature was low enough — that deep, stinging cold that slings itself through hardwood and window panes — that, even if they hadn’t left the windows open for most of the morning, the central heating and space heater combo probably couldn’t have done much to combat it.
Instead, it was the way that Clarke had pulled her down to the mattress with a wicked smile when Lexa was only halfway through putting her pants on that had given flushed cheeks and that sweet, syrupy warmth back to her body. Her heart is still recovering.
“Here.”
(She means it too — whole-heartedly and with every fibre of her being. She’d give up a ticket to the moon if it meant she could relive this moment ad infinitum).
Clarke gives her a funny, little look.
“You’re a sap, you know that?”

8 Tips On Designing A Budget Friendly Modular Kitchen
Perhaps you have been looking for suggestions to design a modular kitchen with no burning a hole in your pocket? Well, we have it covered for you. Designing and installing a modular kitchen on a budget may not seem easy. However, it may be done with a few smart designs and planning. A modular kitchen may be designed with cheaper, easily available choices, without compromising on aesthetics, functionality, and quality.
Listed below are a couple of pointers to help you look for a budget-friendly modular kitchen.
1. Know the Elements of a Modular Kitchen
A modular kitchen includes pre-made cabinet components. These pieces are fitted together to create a completely functional kitchen. The cupboard modules are made of various substances and hold all of the accessories, facilitating effective usage of the space.
The most frequent elements of a modular kitchen are:
Floor cabinets where the work surface rests.
Wall cabinets for overhead storage.
Stylish yet functional dividers for your cabinets.
Functional hardware, including knobs and hinges.
2. Understand the Requirements of Your Kitchen
Your prerequisites for a cooking area are exceptional. You’ll need a tailor-made layout that meets your use requirements, available space, and budget. To revamp your existing kitchen provide the layout some thought. Your kitchen may be an L-shaped, a corridor kitchen; the layout will dictate the modular kitchen installation fashion.
Consider your cooking style Also. Are you someone who needs an excess counter space? Can you bake a good deal? Or need additional space to fit in a bigger fridge? Would you wish to store your cutlery and bone china in your kitchen?
Knowing all this is essential to help you choose a module based on its usefulness and your own requirements.
3. Cabinet Finishes and Materials for Budget-Friendly Kitchens
Your kitchen cabinets take up a chunk of the kitchen design expenses. Choose cupboard materials that are pocket-friendly and durable. They’re durable, come in a variety of colors, and are simple to keep.
Wood veneers are a fantastic option too. They’re thin wood sheets pasted on a surface like MDF or plywood. They aren’t as expensive as wood but give the fashionable look of an all-wood kitchen and provide protection against moisture and termites as well.
Poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) sheets are produced from tough composite vinyl. They’re installed with no substrate. If you want to stick to a wood finish, search for PVC sheets together with artificial wooden grains and molding.
4. Aluminium or steel is just another durable option for kitchen cabinets.
Pick for unique color combinations or a single color if you like. Two-toned kitchens are rather the fad these days. So are plain black or all-white kitchens. It is possible to go to white-blue, red-green-grey, or even pastel colors to your own kitchen cabinets. Countertop Ideas for a Budget-Friendly Modular Kitchen
You will find rather a lot of options offered in the market when it comes to countertops. Granite and Granite are some of the cost-effective solutions. However, a marble countertop may not be ideal, as it stains easily.
5. Kitchen Backsplash Ideas
The backsplash is yet another area to bring in some new color, pattern, and texture in your cooking space. Instead of plain colored tiles, you can use patterned ceramic or ceramic tiles. You can go for traditional patterns like the Turkish tile patterns, or a picture checkered black and white pattern. You can have a look at terracotta tiles, metallic finishes like copper, brass, aluminum, or steel and glass tiles too.
6. Painting the Kitchen
Paint is a magical element that can transform your kitchen in a blink. Instead of whitewashing the kitchen, then pick a bright color that complements your cabinetry and adds a dash of personality to your cooking space. Go to get a neutral color if that’s what you like, and don’t shy away from painting your kitchen a deep hue. On a wall that does not face much heat from the cooker, you can put in heat and grease-resistant wallpaper. A little color can never burn a hole in your pocket!
7. Budget-Friendly Ideas for Kitchen Floors
Don’t neglect to choose the ideal floor remedies for your kitchen. Vinyl is an inexpensive option that comes in the form of sheets, tiles, or boards. You might also opt for patterned or plain ceramic tiles, laminates or linoleum flooring. Opt for stained concrete if you prefer an industrial look. All these are easy on the pocket and low on maintenance.
8. Storage Ideas for a Budget-Friendly Modular Kitchen
whilst planning the storage, then take into consideration all the utensils and appliances you already own. Ensure that you have sufficient space for any new appliances you plan to buy. If you want more storage, fix floating shelves around the wall.
Accessorize Your Kitchen at a Budget
Here are some cool ideas to grow your kitchen
Instead of the regular knobs for your kitchen cabinets, start looking for vintage metal, glass, ceramic or ceramic ones. These will glamourize your cooking area.
Mount a few pieces of artwork on the walls — it’s among the coolest ways to glam up your kitchen. It might be a flea market painting, a couple of photographs, or a poster you like.
Change the fabric of your kitchen window treatments.
High efficiency together with gorgeous aesthetics is a hallmark of modular kitchen layouts. Our experts at HomeLane can certainly help you design a modular kitchen that fits right in your budget.

Some Refractory Materials And Their Properties
Calcined dolomites, limestone and magnesites are active and inexpensive solids to steam the raw hot gas from biomass gasifiers. Variations of their movements along the stream are studied from time to time. The simultaneous coke formation and elimination of coke by steam gasification extend the life of these "naturally occurring" catalysts under certain circumstances. The life of these solids is studied at various temperatures (80080880 ° C), space-time (0.08−0.32 kg dolomite · h / nm3), particle diameter (1−4 mm), and types of solids. Not much inactivation was observed for tar concentrations in crude gas below 48 g / nm3, particle diameters of less than 1.9 mm, temperatures above 800 ° C, and space time / hm3 above 0.13 kg. The effectiveness of these calcined minerals is compared with an inert material (silica sand) and with a commercial steam reforming catalyst (R-67 from Haldor Tospe).
Calcined dolomite or flux dolomite is the name given to quicktime formed by calming a natural dolomitic limestone, which has approximately the equivalent molar weight of calcium oxide to magnesium oxide.
The possibility of preparing refractory materials at very low temperatures has been demonstrated, and these materials have been shown to be stable well beyond 371 ° C (700 ° F). For example, aluminum phosphate-based glass material is refractory to 1,600 ° C (2,912 ° F), at which point aluminum phosphate begins to decompose. Processing is usually performed at low temperatures and heat treatment requires only a temperature of 100 ° C [355]. Physical blending of an inorganic (ceramic) precursor and a high-temperature polymer has been studied in the development of high-temperature adhesive-sealant compositions [356]. The composition consisted of a mixture of an aluminous cement and a poly (amic acid) precursor. A rectangular glass fiber sheet was made into a cylinder and the edges were joined with an adhesive system. After drying for 3 hours at 204 ° C (400 ° F) and heating for 3 hours at 426 ° C (800 ° F), the joint was shown to have good cohesive and adhesive force.
Commercially available Quazite® is a superior structural material molded from 95% inorganic content [357] and 5% high-performance organic polymers. The process, which involves controlled mixing, casting and curing, is owned by Quazite Corporation. The final structure is an inter-cross-linked network, monolithic in nature and tail characteristics. Quazite has the ability to manufacture fiberglass, double the strength of bending and greater abrasion resistance than granite, excellent imperviousness to liquids and chemical resistance comparable to titanium-clad steel. It can also be fiber-reinforced, polished, or gel-coated. A 20-foot × 1–1 / 2 inch thick Quasite® panel is capable of withstanding a 50,000-ampe, 10,000-volt arc. Temperatures above 1,094 ° C (2,000 ° F) were contained. Chemically, it resisted temperatures up to 232 ° C (450 ° F) and pressurized up to 500 psi in a highly concentrated, corrosive salt solution.

Migonis Home Kitchen Reveal
Migonis Home’s white kitchen reveal with new hardwood floors, quartz counters, paneled fridge, two dishwashers and a farmhouse sink in a 12.5 foot island and pro style range… and our largest giveaway ever of a Kitchen Aid Mixer!
When we bought the house the cabinets were solid and all the appliances worked well but ascetically it wasn’t at all our style. We knew we could add some serious value to the home if we made the kitchen a light and bright entertaining spot that really worked well. We invested in both a 48 inch range and fridge and added a giant 12.5 foot island that seats six (I love when all the kids are up there drinking hot chocolate and talking!).
Even though I’ve shared our kitchen during all the stages this is the official reveal with all the sources. Keep in mind this space is still in progress, so even though it’s the official reveal that doesn’t mean that it’s 100% done. I wanted to share the whole space with you now because it’s 95% done and we are still being indecisive about other areas (like the area on the left of the fridge… we have some options we are throwing around to finish that space off).
Cabinets
AJ is our big picture guy and I’m the detail girl. He brainstormed the layout of the large island on the two levels to make sense of the step down into the long skinny part of the kitchen and the prep island to work with the distance between the range and the sink. Even before I went to the store to pick out cabinets I mapped out what I needed cabinets for based off what I was using in our former kitchen. The only thing that I was struggling with were the small appliances like the pressure cooker, crockpot or things of those size. I cleaned out a long skinny closet in the mudroom (that I hadn’t cleaned since we moved in and dumped stuff there four years ago!) and that’s my appliance garage (you can see it in the very first photo in this post, it’s the door to the far left).
I would love to add either something that mirrors the coffee bar by the kitchen table or a floor to ceiling pantry over there for Costco storage. Anyone else want to buy things in bulk but have no place to store the enormous containers they come in??? That’s a project down the road once we figure out the French doors into the dining room and the resulting step we need to build.
Counters
In our last home we had marble counters and I don’t for a second regret going with quartz (Mara Blanca from Q Design) in this home. I have never had to worry about stains or water marks (although I still do because I have PTSD from the marble where if we looked at it there would be a stain or water mark). I worried they would look like a cheap knock off of marble but I don’t think they do at all. It is startlingly similar to the marble we had in our last house!
You can read about our marble subway tile back splash with North Shore Marble & Granite here, it was our first time installing individual tiles (as opposed to 12 inch sheets).
Capiz Light
This light was a steal for the size and how it looks. I’m in LOVE with it. I wanted something that gave a little beachy flair while still working with a very classic kitchen and this fixture did the trick. It’s like a piece of art in the kitchen!
I have my eye set on two of these gorgeous chandeliers for above our dining room table but they are in a different price point… I view those as like buying a piece of art and would take them with me if we ever moved! Something like this capiz chandelier is perfect for the space and would stay here.
We started this project mid-December and were able to live in the kitchen with running water and counters by the February but it’s taken us FOREVER to finish detail work. If you’ve followed along at all you know that our fridge was the biggest source of headache for us which really prolonged things but I wouldn’t go back and do it over… it’s perfect for the space and it’s been great to have something larger than we previously had because #fourkids.
We bought six affordable bar stools for the space but they are too short (every single one was too short because the island is a strange height) so we need to put cushions and castors on them. It’s great to be able to fit the whole family in the space!
Faucets and Sinks
This deserves a whole category to it self. I wanted a bridge faucet from the moment I started planning but a lot of them are so ridiculously expensive. This one is a keeper… I am in absolute love with it. The black plastic piece looked cheap to me when I was looking at it online but now I completely understand why it’s not chrome… you wouldn’t be able to hold the sprayer with super hot water for any length of time if it was chrome. The price is unbeatable and it feels SO quality… the faucet is super heavy!
We have two bar sinks in the prep island and coffee bar and used this faucet on them. The sinks are a great price and the faucet coordinates really well with the bridge faucet and feels quality and heavy weight.
Another must have with this project was a farmhouse sink and this one is one of the cheaper ones out there. The price is about half the price of Kohler’s. We haven’t had a single scratch to the inside of the sink despite all the dish washing that happens every since meal. The stainless steel piece that comes with the sink is a LIFESAVER.
Floors
The previous owners had carpet everywhere except in the actual kitchen, which was a laminate checkerboard pattern. The rugs were getting stained repeatedly under the kitchen table and it looked so dingy (it’s looked really good when we bought the house but kids were rough on a light rug where we eat!).
We decided to install the same kind of wood that is in the rest of the house, red oak. Once the wood was in waffled on whether we wanted it darker like, what we originally planned on to flow into the rest of the downstairs or go lighter and brighter. Obviously we decided on lighter and did a pickled oak stain with poly over it. If you were to just poly it the floors would turn even more yellow / orangy than the they are.
Eating Area
I love the table and the chairs but it’s too much wood in this area and the table is too orangy. After my last table painting experience that kept chipping (even with primer and poly!) AJ put his foot down and would rather buy an eight person table but we are still looking for that piece. I have in mind the whole look for this space, I just have to get AJ on board.
The windows on the far left were part of the original house before the former owners added on this room in the last 70s / early 80s. I would LOVE to get French doors into the dining room, I think it would make the house flow beautifully and really allow us to have larger gatherings because we could just open the door to use both tables comfortably. We had the quote for the work but need to remove a portion of a heater to make it happen (that room becomes sweltering in seconds so we aren’t worried about it from a practicality standpoint) so it isn’t as simple as just removing the windows.
Coffee Bar Area
We wanted an area visible from the mudroom door that looked welcoming as soon as someone walked into the house. We set it up with four chairs (they are really affordable!) and a little rug. It’s the perfect spot while I’m getting dinner ready for people to relax in!

Curtain walling terminology

EN 13119 DOCUMENT RELEASE 2016 ( can be found below)
A curtain wall is made of Aluminium and usually filled with glass, stone or paneled metal. The walling is part of the building structure, but no way is it used to support the weight of structure. Curtain walling became useful just after the military released rites of Aluminium use for the public just after world war 2.
Curtain walls range from straight design to bespoke architectural buildings making them a very clever design but can be very dynamic to build thus needs an expert to construct them.
Documents by European commitee for standardization 13119 full terminology - curtain walling

Fabrications
Fabrication of a walling can determine if it’s a stick system or modular engineered. The stick system is when the curtain wall is put together piece by piece and the glass panels are constructed just like a click in jigsaw, these are put together as the builders go at the actual site.
Modular systems are all installed and put together in a large warehouse very carefully transported to the construction site and placed within the building structure in one go were the modules mate together constructing one story high and one module wide to begin with and may carry on for more width and height.
Which systems are available in walling?
Whether the stick system is used or the single unit they both can be exterior glazed or internally glazed units. Internal choice allows for the glass panels to be installed from the inside of the structure but a down fall to this internally based system is that ‘’air infiltration’’ can be a major concern. Also, the project manager must take in to consideration for any major obstacles or access to the internal glazed walling.
External glazing for curtain walling is especially advised for low rise buildings and a preference for construction personnel were as high-rise buildings would prefer to keep internal glazing in case of maintenance and exchange of glass panels. The external system will require scaffolding surrounding the building or a swing stage hanging is required. Now days project managers intend on using double way curtain wall systems which can be accessed via the inside or outside which makes the maintenance much easier and safer.
Types of Glass or panels used on curtain Walling
Opaque panels include opacified spandrel glass, metal panelling, thin stone and many other materials even terra cotta or fibre-reinforced plastic.
Spandrel Glass can be monolithic, insulated or laminated. With the use of opacifies such as film, paint and ceramic frit, spandrel glass can be made opaque. Shadow boxing is also a method used to achieve the opaque effect.
Vision Glass is normally a fixed pane that normally are fitted into an internal frame that sits within the walling (a frame within a frame). This tough insulated glass will sometimes have lamination on either one or both sides of the window.
Metal panels come in Aluminium plate, steel and other non-corroding metals were the 3-layer method is used (like a sandwich 2 outer layers of metal and an inner layer of thin plastic). Some can consist of no inner sheeting and just the two outer strong metal sheets to form the fully finished panel.
Granite panels are also a type of panel used to fill inside the curtain walling and if done wrong can cause major constructional problems for the architect therefor builders use careful construction and adjacent elements such as cladding, roofs and the base of a wall are all considered by a doorwins specialist.

Types of systems Available in today’s Market
Pressure equalized rain screen systems are excellent water blockers that stop rain water and such from running over the barrier of a build. This type of system resists water passage within Curtain Walling, it carries a PE rain screen system design and the face of the Glass, glazing pockets and interlinked gaskets and seals form an air tight barrier. The external glass, glazing materials and Aluminium framing function to serve a rain screen which clears water away. Any minor bits of water that do get through are directed to the outside of a curtain wall which helps keep this type of system one of the most used.
Face sealed designs use a barrier wall which depend on continuous and perfectly placed seals in between the glass units and frames. Many argue that this system should be avoided and any construction that depends on ‘’long term’’ use of a seal of any sort is not the way forward.
Water managed systems appear to look the same as a pressure equalized system but in matter of fact there is no effort to create an air barrier for every glass unit. The water manager lets in a larger amount of water before weeping it away. It is way easier to gain a leak as there is no air barrier within this system which means water can travel much further vertically. Water managed systems rely largely on weeping water away unlike the weeping holes on a pressure equalized system contains which allows more air to circulate within the drainage mechanicals.
Thermal Performance of Aluminium and PVC
Overall thermal performance relies on many factors such as glazing panel function, frames construction quality and the perimeter. Curtain wall frame conductance comes down to the function of the frame material, geometry and warehouse fabrication or manufacture.
Because Aluminium is a metal with a very high thermal conductivity level other materials that conduct much lower levels are used. These materials consist of PVC, rubber, poly-uterine and polyester reinforced nylon. Aluminium metals placed internally move different to internal aluminium which causes polyurethane to break and shrink due to temperature difference and therefor Back-up mechanical attachment of the two halves of the frame is recommended to help prevent such matters occur. It is suggested to place incorporate separators on the curtain wall which can improve thermal performance.
How are Curtain Walls supported?
Curtain wall systems rely highly on the floor structures and framing when weighing the loads whether dead or live. The loads consist mainly of positive and negative wind loads and can also refer to a snow load, seismic loads and maintenance loads. When these loads come in to play the curtain wall will probably demonstrate some movement of the structure and this is a main reason to why the connections that anchor a walling must be designed to allow differential movement while resisting the loads applied.
Mullions of a stick framed aluminium curtain wall are built past two floor levels where one floor is used to act as an anchor by combining gravity and lateral as one and Vertical movement is purposely allowed to such a structure which provides complete resistance. Even the glass is installed in such a way that allows the glass to slide along special made gaskets so that the aluminium frame and glass can move as one. The only down fall is, movement of the glass within the frame and the movement forced in anchors tend to induce additional stresses into a stick framed system.
Unitized curtain wall systems allow the movement of the frame and different movement of the structure as the engineers place special joints between each of the curtain wall units. Due to being 100% bespoke designed this allows the architect to carefully engineer the movement process to a much more less aggressive one. unitized curtain wall typically consists of an assembly with three-dimensional adjustability and the anchors occur at the edge of a slab or spandrel beam. A stack joint is carefully designed to help resisting loads while the two floor anchor system resists gravity.
Air Quality, maintenance and repairability
Mould growth can be accumulated by condensation moisture and liquid water which can cause a problem with IAQ or local building regulators, even leakage of both air and water can be a cause. This type of leakage can contain sealed for years and not appear to the human eye until deterioration and mould growth which can be a very costly repair.
Perimeter sealants, properly designed and installed, have a typical service life of 10 to 15 years although breaches are likely from day one just as any construction, so regular maintenance checks are required. Appropriate maintenance includes replacement seals and surface preparation.
Aluminium frames at doorwins are generally painted or anodized for long life and we expect the same from a Curtain Wall, fluoropolymer thermoset coatings which require periodic cleaning only are a great way to have good resistance and environmental degradation. With some surface preparation a recoat is also available for Aluminium frames and panes. Anodized aluminium frames cannot be "re-anodized" in place but are cleaned and already coated with such protection before the metal is put in to place at a building site.
Over exposure of seals and gaskets need regular inspections and a maintenance plan in place to help minimize water damage as discussed earlier. Frame seals should be covered and the glass seals need to be regularly checked too.

Curtain walling terminology

A curtain wall is made of Aluminium and usually filled with glass, stone or paneled metal. The walling is part of the building structure, but no way is it used to support the weight of structure. Curtain walling became useful just after the military released rites of Aluminium use for the public just after world war 2.
Curtain walls range from straight design to bespoke architectural buildings making them a very clever design but can be very dynamic to build thus needs an expert to construct them.

4 Easy Steps To Repair A Granite Gear Backpacking Frame
In 2016 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail carrying a Granite Gear Blaze A.C. 60 as my pack. Lightweight, versatile, durable and comfortable, I highly recommend using this pack for any type of backpacking excursion. After about 1000 miles of use, a crack appeared in the poly-carbonate frame-sheet in the pack. After another 500 miles, the frame failed and cracked completely in half rendering the backpack useless. After about five minutes of flipping shit, I came up with a game-plan to temporarily MacGyver the frame in the middle of the woods. Here’s how I did it.
Materials: Duct Tape & Six Twigs
1. Line of the frame and apply small pieces of duct tape to make sure it doesn't move. If there is any space between the pieces of the frame, the repair will be weak and you will most likely have to fix it again.
2. Find small, sturdy sticks to splint the frame on both the front and back. The side of the frame facing your back must have smaller twigs so that they don't protrude past the frame and create pressure points against your back. Wrap the frame and twigs in duct tape once to hold them in place.
3. Apply multiple wraps of duct tape to ensure the splints are held tight against the frame. The duct tape primarily holds the sticks in place and prevents the frame from moving horizontally.
4. Feed bear-line through the slots on both sides and tie as tight as possible to prevent horizontal movement or separation of the frame. I used cuben-fiber line that has practically no stretch.
Congrats, you can now carry your pack as intended again, happy hiking!
Once I got into town, I replaced the twigs with toothbrush handles and did the repair again so I didn't have to worry about another blowout. I only had to use this repaired frame for about a week and half of hiking because Granite Gear and their awesome customer service team got a new frame-sheet sent out to me immediately with no questions asked and no cost to me. I will definitely continue to use granite gear for my future expeditions!
