Ritualized prayer with the use of beads pre-dates Christianity. While it is most commonly associated with the catholic rosary, many cultures and religions use meditative beads. Buddhist prayer beads (mala) are used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, Muslim prayer beads (tasbih) are used to repeat praises to god. Similarly, worry beads (komboloi) are carried and used to pass time among Greek and Cypriot culture. While these are not used in a religious context, the beads are handled in a very specific manner, over and over again, leading to their ritualistic use. Wiccans and other pagans also use prayer beads, often associated with the seasons and goddess worship. • All prayer beads have a specific number of beads, are constructed in a specific way, and each are handled in a specific manner. Ultimately the goal of these beads is to aid in meditation, focus and concentration. It is a common human trait to want to compartmentalize and organize one’s thoughts and prayers in this manner. While it works for some, it may not work for others; that is the beauty of individuality. • I prefer using beads myself. I am a visual person; I like making lists and organizing my thoughts accordingly. To have something tangible that I can envision each prayer and spell with helps me tremendously. • I have created these particular beads to aid in my intuitive practice. Your intuition is innate and always present, it’s just a matter of whether or not we excersice it. Does the Lord's commandment about unceasing prayer (Lk.18:1) apply only to monks, or to all Christians? If it applied only to monks, the Apostle would not have written to the Christians in Salonica: 'Pray without ceasing' (I Thess. 5:17). The Apostle, then, reiterates the Lord's command word for word, and gives it to all Christians without distinction of monk or layman. St Gregory Palamas lived for some time as a young man in a monastery in Beroea. There lived in those parts a well-known ascetic, the elder Job, who was venerated by all. It happened at one time that St Gregory, in the elder's presence, quoted the Apostle's words, asserting that unceasing prayer was a necessity for all Christians, not only for monks. The elder Job replied to these words, saying that the Jesus prayer is a necessity only for monks, and not for all Christians. Gregory, being a young man, ceded the argument, not wishing to quarrel, and withdrew in silence. When Job had returned to his cell and was standing in prayer, an angel of God appeared to him in great heavenly glory, and said to him: 'Old man, don't doubt the truth of Gregory's words; he spoke truly. So, hold your peace and advise others to do the same.' Thus, then, both the Apostle and the angel underlined the commandment that all Christians must pray to God without ceasing. If not unceasingly in church, then unceasingly in every place and at every time, in the depths of your heart. If God does not for a moment tire of giving us good things, how can we tire of thanking Him for these good things? If He is constantly thinking of us, why do we not think constantly of Him?
