On Friday at approximately 5pm, tragedy struck the hockey nation. At 530pm my hockey team got the news that there was an accident. Our evening was supposed to be a fun celebration for athletic achievement, at my college. Instead, it turned into a sad, unbearable evening for many. First, we were told everyone was fine, but then the numbers just kept climbing. 2.. 5.. 9.. all the way to 14 and now finally 15. People took to the side, frantically trying to get ahold of someone, anyone, just to get some information about their friends. Are they alive, are they ok? Others left for the evening unable to contain their emotion.

Through this all, I was in disbelief. I was hoping that the news was over dramatized. All I could say was: “that sucks” and “I’m sure it’s not as bad as we’ve been told”. Some people thought I was emotionless, but sometimes people get a little over excited when something bad happens. False information is often spread as people are blinded by emotion. Oh how I wished that this was the case.. false information.

Unfortunately waking up to the news the next morning was a real wake up call.. a kick to the face really. As a hockey player, you NEVER expect for this to happen. The bus truly becomes your second home; and your team becomes your family, whether you like them or not. You spend 20+ hours a week with them: practicing, working out and analyzing game tape. If you play post-sec hockey, you are probably spending more time studying with them as well.

Anyone who has played hockey with me knows what I do when we have an away game. I get on the bus, whip out my sleeping bag, and literally sleep the ENTIRE way there, sprawled across the seats like a butterfly in a cocoon. I get motion sick easily, and this is the only way for me to travel without getting sick. I can’t imagine how frightening it was for some of those boys to be peacefully sleeping, dreaming about what they are going to “bring for the team” at the game, only to wake up to a crash, be thrown across the seats and see half their family dead and the other half crying for help. To be helpless, unable to move. This brings me the most uneasy feeling. This could happen to anyone with the hundreds of hours teams spend travel long across provinces just to play a few hour of hockey; I think this, but I can’t overthink it because i know i’d never be able to step back on a bus.

This is a devastating time, not only for Saskatchewan or the hockey nation, but, for people across the world. Coaches always tell you to look around the room and play for the person sitting next to you, for the person sitting across from you, for your entire team. You don’t realize how big your team is until something as tragic as this happens. Athletes across all sports have such a sense of community, it’s unexplainable. And it is extraordinary the amount of support from all across the world for these families. These boys are from across all of western Canada. I guarantee that everyone here knows someone that knows someone who is personally affected by this. We must stay strong for those who are grieving and those who’ve survived and is still battling. They have a long road of recovery ahead of them… never take life for granted.
