Alastor paced nervously in his room, running a hand through his hair as he stared down at the array of pregnancy tests scattered across his dresser. Some were negative, others positive. The inconsistency was driving him mad. He was used to control, to certainty, and this... this was far beyond anything he knew how to handle.

Alastor: *frustrated, muttering to himself* This doesn’t make any sense! They can’t all be wrong, but they can’t all be right either!

His mind raced with possibilities, none of them comforting. Could the child still be there, despite everything? Could it be... gone? The uncertainty was unbearable.

A knock on the door interrupted his spiraling thoughts. Husk stood in the doorway, looking as tired as ever but with an eyebrow raised at the sight of Alastor pacing frantically.

Husk: You gonna wear a hole in the floor with all that pacing.

Alastor: *sighing, exasperated* I can’t get a straight answer! Some of these tests say yes, some say no, and I’m going mad! I don’t know if the baby survived or if— *pauses, catching himself, realizing he’s said too much*

Husk raised an eyebrow at that but didn’t press. Instead, he walked into the room and glanced at the mess of tests.

Husk: Maybe the tests are faulty. Hell’s not exactly known for reliable products.

Alastor: Perhaps... but I need to know for certain. I need an answer.

Husk scratched his chin, thinking for a moment before looking back at Alastor with a suggestion.

Husk: How about this? We both take a test, just to check if they’re really all that faulty. You know I’m not pregnant, so if mine comes back positive, then we know they’re junk.

Alastor: *hesitated, his mind racing but decides* Fine. Let’s do it. I’ll take another one. But if you’re right and they’re faulty, then we need to find a new way to get answers.

Husk shrugged, grabbing two tests and handing one to Alastor before heading off to the bathroom. Alastor followed, his heart racing for reasons he couldn’t quite explain.

A few moments later, they both returned to the room, setting the tests on the table between them. The room was quiet, the tension thick as they waited.

Then, slowly, the results began to appear.

Husk: *looking down at his test, blinking in confusion* Wait... what the hell?

Alastor glanced at his own test, and his heart skipped a beat.

Alastor: *voice trembling* Positive? Again?

Husk held up his test, eyes wide with disbelief.

Husk: This...this one says I’m pregnant too.

Alastor stared at him, eyes wide, as the realization hit both of them at the same time. The tests weren’t faulty—something else was happening.

Alastor: But... how...?!

Husk: *deadpan* Yeah, you tell me, ‘cause this isn’t exactly something I signed up for.

The room fell into stunned silence, both of them grappling with the impossibility of what had just happened. Alastor’s mind whirled, trying to make sense of it, while Husk just stared at the test, clearly not prepared for this turn of events.

Alastor: *half to himself, half to Husk* This can’t be happening. You’re not supposed to— *pauses* this isn’t possible!

It’s recommended to start ASA for prevention of pre-eclampsia. First trimester (10-13 weeks) screening: nuchal translucency (sign of neural tube defects), PAPPA, free beta hCG

Quad screen (15-22 weeks): beta hCG, estriol, inhibin A, alpha fetoprotein

Integrated screen: 10-13 - NT and PAPPA; or 15-22 weeks - quadruple screen

Quad screen is 15 to 22 weeks (16 to 18 weeks is ideal): Alpha fetoprotein made by baby’s liver (can indicate NTD, chromosomal disorders; elevated in twins or triplets); beta hCG, estriol, inhibin A

Trisomy 21: AFP decreased, uE3 decreased, hCG increased, DIA (dimeric inhibin A) increased

Quad screens have high false positive rates
