back to the real world tomorrow 😅 I have my preobservation, then my observation on thursday, then post on friday i think. ugh. and my legs feel pretty goopy even though i didn’t walk a bonkers amount over the weekend.

Summary of Norman’s “The Design of Everyday Things”

“The secret to success is to understand what the real problem is”

Norman explains in his book that finding problems is much harder than it may seem and states that “The real world is not like university”. He elaborates on how professors make up artificial problems with predetermined answers and states how, in the real world, problems need to be discovered past the surface level by looking deeper in order to address real issues.

Norman states how engineers and business people solve issues! While designers discover the “important” ones.

He stresses the idea of not jumping to the conclusion of a stated problem.

He rather opts to find the solutions that fit human ‘desires, needs and capabilities through what he terms ‘human centered design’.

This is achieved through Observation, generation, prototyping and testing.

Norman elaborates in great detail on the concept of the ‘Double Diamond’ and how we can use it expand the scope of the problem in order to find the appropriate solution.

The first diamon encapsulating the diverging concept of Discovering and Defining the problem, ultimately converging in what he deems would be the ‘right problem’.

After the first convergence, the problem diverges again but this time with the aim to ‘Develop and Deliver’. This frees the designer from unnecessary restrictions to the problem.

Norman then further elaborates on the four step process of human-centered-design.

-Observation-

Understanding the nature of the problem by observing the consumers and understanding what their basic desires are. Acknowledging how they interact with things around them.

-Generation of Ideas-

Avoid becoming fixated on one idea by bombarding yourself with ideas. This involves questioning every aspect of the problem without becoming afraid of creating new ideas.

-Prototyping-

This involves testing potential solutions by building prototypes. Prototypes rely on understanding your preobserved human activities in depth in order to ensure that the problem is understood.

-Testing-

Have a research team observe a selected group of people utilizing the prototype. Use these observations to question the groups thought process regarding the prototype.

ITERATION - REPEAT - REFINE - ENHANCE

After sufficient testing and enhancement has occurred, a product manager will decide when the process should end.

I missed my preobservation conference with my principal on Friday since I took a personal day for the snow and now I have to go reschedule it and it’s the last thing I want to do. I need a job where I don’t have to interact with other people unless I choose to.
