The 'Foolish Man' and his mega refinery complex
Tumblr media
Chief Bayo Onanuga writes; Some years ago, Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man invited media leaders to a luncheon at the Protea Hotel in Ikeja to mark his 55th birthday. Some of his guests sat around him at the centre table. They chatted freely. Discussions about our country, and the state of the economy soon veered into discussing the absurdity of our country, being a major crude exporter, and also a major importer of refined petroleum products. Our colleague from a major business paper said the local conditions were unfavourable to any investor who wanted to build a refinery. He then made a remark that I believe he would live to regret: "Only a foolish man will build a refinery in Nigeria". Aliko who had listened to all our business and political pontifications, interjected: "I am that foolish man". A pin-drop silence enveloped the table as he dropped the unexpected news: "My company has just decided to build a refinery in the country. But we are doing it big". Those were his exact words, as the multi-dollar billionaire told us he was willing to spend close to $9 billion on the project. The media big man became speechless. The rest of us caught the contagion of being flummoxed as well, as Aliko expatiated on the project. He said it will be a petrochemical complex. As the project was still on the drawing board, he did not tell us it will be the biggest refinery in the world, capable of processing 650,000 barrels of crude daily. All the hint he gave was that it will be 'big'. Our takeaway was that it will be big like Aliko's involvement in cement, sugar, pasta, and other businesses. He didn't say it will include a fertilizer plant and a power plant that can supply enough electricity to Nigeria's South West, excluding Lagos. Initially billed for Ogun State, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery surprisingly shifted location to Lagos, just opposite the creek separating the two states. Governor Dapo Abiodun may want to probe his predecessor, Ibikunle Amosun, why he allowed the complex to move to neighbouring Lagos. The gigantic project, which cost $15 billion, is now sitting in all majesty in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Ibeju-Lekki, covering a land area of approximately 2,635 hectares, seven times the size of Victoria Island. The complex is the world’s Largest Single-Train 650,000 barrels per day Petroleum Refinery with 900 KTPA Polypropylene Plant. It comes with a 435 MW Power Plant, which will be able to meet the total power requirement of Ibadan DisCo of 860,316 MWh covering five States including Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, and Ekiti. The refinery, according to its fact sheet, can meet 100% of the Nigerian requirement for all refined products, including Gasoline, Diesel, Kerosene, and Aviation Jets. It will also be able to produce a surplus of each of these products for export. Designed for 100% Nigerian Crude, the refinery has the flexibility to process other crudes. No wonder it is located near the seashore. Today President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the gigantic petrochemical complex. Just as we rejoice with Aliko Dangote and the Dangote Group family, we need to give kudos to the Buhari administration for ensuring that the complex comes to fruition, by ensuring that it was not starved of needed foreign exchange and taking a stake in it. For Aliko, all is well that ends well. The complex will bring to an end our country's many decades of shame, for being unable to refine its crude and having to depend on importation, wasting scarce forex. The 'foolish man' of 11 years ago has demonstrated once again that he is a man of wisdom, a peerless shrewd investor who sees clearly the 'bigger picture' when his compatriots are bogged down by parochialism and immediate monetary gains. Tumblr media
One 60-year-old Aminu Danmaliki who recently made headlines for allegedly marrying an 11-year-old girl in Kano State has now spoken on the union. a video of Aminu Danmaliki’s wedding went viral on social media days ago with netizens accusing him of marrying a bride that looked so young. His critics said that underage girls should be protected rather than married off. Danmaliki said in a statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday has now clarified that his wife is 21 years old and not 11 years as people claimed on social media. He said, “My recent marriage with Sakina has generated a lot of tension and unfounded allegations that I married an underage girl some suggesting she is 11 years old and that she was forced to marry me. That is untrue. The Wedding Video went viral. “We decided to keep mute but was advised to state the true facts, here it is: My beloved wife is 21 years old she made her own choice of me as her husband and I loved her too. “I hope the blackmailers and doubting Thomas’s (sic) will see the reality in this picture and leave us alone to enjoy our honeymoon.” In the comment section of his post, many defended him while only a few criticised him. Emmanuel Eche-Ofun John wrote, “Happy married life to you both. Please, don’t hurt her, she looks too fragile.” A lady Jameelat Suraj wrote, “I see nothing here. Everyone has his own perspectives. To me I prefer elderly men than younger ones.” On Twitter, President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide Bashir Ahmad reacted to the statement, saying “Coming out to state the facts is very, very important.” Read the full article

The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to the front page report by the Trust Newspaper of Friday, December 16, 2022 to the effect that the “Coordinator of the Northern Consensus Forum, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu” and others have “directed commodity traders and truck drivers to shun the South East of Nigeria over incessant killings of their members by members of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB)”, adding that “they have declared 3 days warning strike due to the constant killing of the northerners in the South East”. The most disturbing part of the report is that “not less than 100 northerners were murdered in the South East within last week”. In the first place, it is a lie from the pit of hell that “not less than 100 northerners were murdered in the South East within last week”. Second: the said Dr. Aliyu has not been in the picture among the Northern leaders resident in the South East and as such is not in position to speak on the relationship between the Northerners and the people of the South East. Third: one begins to imagine the very intendment of the purveyor of such a false, mendacious and devilish alarm that “not less than 100 northerners have been killed in the South East within last week”. Four: an introspection will reveal the damage caused on the image of Nigeria among the comity of nations that 100 persons are killed in one week. Five: apart from the negative image to Nigeria, such unverified front page report is a breach on the duties and civic responsibilities expected of a national daily such as the Daily Trust. Six: investigative journalism suggests that both the number of persons killed and the locations where they were killed should have been indicated in the report by the Daily Trust. Seven: unfortunately, Aliyu has inadvertently reduced the worth of a Nigerian to that of a chicken that could be slaughtered in hundreds within a week. Eight: the onus lies on Aliyu to locate the corpses of the said 100 persons. Nine: Evidently, such false alarm is a security threat capable of causing pandemonium across the country. Ten: Going further, is there any other group, among the diverse groups in Nigeria that has come up with a claim of killings by the IPOB? And many more questions that ordinarily will compel the security agents to interrogate the said Coordinator of the Northern Consensus Forum, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu and adequate measures taken to serve as a deterrent to other alarmists. There is no gainsaying the relentless efforts of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Clergy, traditional rulers and indeed all the well- meaning Igbo about the adverse consequences of youth restiveness in the South East. We have in that trepidation repeatedly called on the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to come to our aid by adopting a political solution to the agitations by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). We note with sadness, that various forms of insecurity such as banditry, kidnapping, herders-farmers clash, etc have come to define our daily lives. We hold the view that while some aspects of the insecurity in Nigeria are amorphous, the IPOB are a known group that can be negotiated out of the present socio-economic quagmire. For the avoidance of doubt, the alarmist publication in question is politically motivated to create mistrust between the North and the South. It is important to inform the “new-breed" chauvinists that the Igbo friendliness, hospitality and cosmopolitanism have often found profound expressions in diverse inter-ethnic relations in Nigeria. For instance, a Fulani man from Sokoto Caliphate – Mallam Umaru Altine, was in 1952 elected as the first Mayor of the City of Enugu, the heartbeat of the Igbo Nation. He contested for a second term and won and remained in office till 1958. Also in 1959, the Igbo, led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, supported Alhaji Tafawa Balewa to become the Prime Minister of Nigeria. Furthermore, the Igbo led by Dr.
Alex Ekwueme supported Alhaji Shehu Shagari to become the President of Nigeria in 1979; also to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, 2007 and in 2015, a group of Igbo led by Dr. Chris Ngige, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, among others, supported the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari. In 2019, even the PDP elements in authority, contrived what they called mandatory 25 percent to Buhari. Apart from the democratic dispensations, the South East were obliged to the military Heads of State such as Gen.Yakubu Gowon, Gen. Murtala Mohammed, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, Gen.Sani Abacha and Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar; all from the North. It is therefore curious that the first time an Igbo, Mr Peter Obi, is gaining unprecedented authentic national and international endorsements based on his outstanding performance credentials, to the leadership of the country, instead of a moral appeal to justice, equity and reflective mutual reciprocity, some crisis entrepreneurs are sowing the seeds of discord and deep mistrust between the North and the South East. The Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor lays no pretensions to the insecurity in the South East of Nigeria but frowns at any form of mischief that incites the North against the South East. In other words, the likes of Aliyu are drawn to a recent remark by Sarkin Hausawa or the Leader of the Northerners in Enugu State, Alhaji Abubakar Sambo. Speaking on the cordial relationship between the Northerners and their Igbo host, Sambo enthused “I can confidently tell you that we have a strong bond and that we feel like a part of the government. Yes, we have a lot of representatives in various committees in the state government. The first is the most powerful committee that the governor has given so much attention and commitment to financially, morally and what have you – that is the Enugu State Security and Peace Committee. The committee has been in existence since the inception of this current government and we’ve been working. In that committee, I happen to be a member and there are about 10 other northerners in that committee. We have the representatives of the Commissioner of Police, the Director of SSS, Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state who comes in person”. The above Sambo euphoria is reflected in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo states of the South East. This indeed is the Igbo characterisation. While urging the Northerners to continue their cordial relationship with the Igbo, Ohanaeze restates that the incessant sit at home in the South East is an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Dr, Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, National Publicity Secretary, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

My Instagram, Facebook Accounts Hacked – Aisha Buhari Disowns Fake CBN Directive post
Nigerian First Lady, Aisha Buhari has claimed that her social media handles were hacked. This is as she disowned a post on her Instagram and Facebook page alleging that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, ordered Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and 1000 notes. Aisha, who blamed the post on criminals who may have hacked her account, said the post has been deleted on her order. In a rebuttal posted on her Facebook page, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari lamented how the alleged hackers toiled with her previous posts. She said, “It has come to my attention that a certain fake news was posted on my social media handle, Instagram which also directly connects to my Facebook page, earlier this morning. I have since directed that it should be deleted. “This is without a doubt the criminal actions of the person(s) who were responsible for deleting quite a number of my posts since 2018 to late last year when I posted a video and picture of my hands with Henna design of ABAT insignia on the day I launched the APC Women Presidential Campaign Committee for Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ilorin, Kwara State, my post on the event for the Traditional and Complementary Alternative Medicine (TCAM) conference and 17 other posts. “This person is a hacker, criminally minded with the intention to continue attacking my reputation through my social media platforms”. The First Lady had posted a statement purportedly issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, that the old notes would now be collected until May, 2023. The apex bank had since debunked the report. [ad_1] President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, has described some of the characteristics of his principal which might not be known to others, Njenje Media News reports. According to Gambari, Buhari is someone who rewards loyalty and who does not ‘use and dump’ his subordinates like regular politicians in the country. Gambari said this on Thursday, while responding to eulogies poured on him by the leadership of the State House and his staff in a reception organised to mark his 78th birthday in the Presidential Villa. Gambari recalled how he, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, was ousted alongside Buhari, then Miitary Head of State, in the military coup of August 1985; and how he was appointed as the Chief of Staff by the same man after having won election for the second term as the nation’s President. The CoS said: “When I came on board, I said my job is simple – to give loyalty, competence and support and that’s why even when Mr. President sees me and calls Chief of Staff, I say yes sir; but the emphasis is on ‘Staff’ not on ‘Chief’ because there is only one Chief and that’s the President and our duty is to support him loyally and competently. “When I was offered this job by the President, he brought out a picture that was taken in June 1985, it was at the OAU Summit. The then Head of State was sitting in the middle, and his then Chief Press Secretary, Wada Maida, to his right. “And he asked, ‘do you remember this picture? I said ‘No sir, but I remember the ocassion’. He said: ‘well, you were my Foreign Minister, we were kicked out of government in 1985, 35 years later, I find the opportunity to bring you back’. “He said ‘we were interrupted then but I am bringing you back now to let you continue where we stopped. I thanked him very much and I said can I have hold of this picture so that I can make a copy? He said no, I kept mine, go and find yours. “Three reasons are behind why I put that picture in front of my office. First, to return to the important point of departure; to show the kind of person our President is. He doesn’t forget those who have worked with him, who have served him loyally and in whom he has confidence. Some other people use and dump, not him.” [ad_2]
