"You've got a knife under your doublet, haven't you, Kheldar?" Urgit asked. "Two, actually," Silk replied in a matter-of-fact tone, "and one in my boot and another on a string at the back of my neck. I like to be prepared for little emergencies when they arise—but why dwell on an unpleasantness that never happened?" "You're a dreadful man, Kheldar." "I know."

RAMBLING UNDER THE CUT SO SORRY
I'm like 90% sure I had the same reaction last time I read King of the Murgos but as much as I love silk I could write a whole essay about how both of his obvious love interests (Porenn and Liselle) are a Very Bad Idea and not just for the obvious reasons. I was trying to calculate Silks age using Belgarath the Sorcerer but the next page I read told me he was 48 which makes his relationship with Liselle somehow even worse. Maybe I will write that essay. You could argue that Bethra could have been a third previous love interest for Silk, and even if that's implied it's still better that whatever the fuck he had going on with Porenn and Liselle.

I’ve just finished reading the Belgariad for the first time and loved it, so here’s some messy doodles of what I think Garion, Silk, Barak and Ce’Nedra look like. I didn’t realise that Garion was meant to have sandy hair until like Book 4, so here’s freckly brown-haired Garion instead.
Also first post, woo!

((Not me, rereading these books for allusion quotes-
From Pawn of Prophecy
“Could you penetrate this palace, Prince Kheldar?” King Anheg challenged.
“I already have, your Majesty,” Silk said modestly, “a dozen times or more.”
Anheg looked at Rhodar with one raised eyebrow.
Rhodar coughed slightly. “It was some time ago, Anheg. Nothing serious. I was just curious about something, that’s all.”
“All you had to do was ask,” Anheg said in a slightly injured tone.
“I didn’t want to bother you,” Rhodar said with a shrug. “Besides, it’s more fun to do it the other way.”

Why I Like You.
Silk groaned as he lay flat on a roof in Tol Honeth. This little game of cat and mouse with Bethra was getting tiresome. It was time to pay her a visit.
“I do wish you would stop hiring half way competent people, my dear rival.” He drawled, dropping onto the balcony of her private quarters.
“Ah, Radek of Kotu, or is it Ambar of Boktor? I never can keep your aliases straight, darling.” Bethra teased, opening the curtain. Silk smirked, taking in the courtesan.
“I am merely Silk tonight. And you are beautiful as ever, my crafty Bethra.” He complimented, giving her a sweeping bow.
“Come in, I knew you would show yourself eventually.” She held the curtain open allowing him to walk in.
“I do hope I’m not disturbing your work.” There was a hint of sincerity in his voice. “I fear this may take a while.”
“It always does with you.”
“Not that.” Silk chuckled. “At least, not yet.” Bethra sat back on the richly adorned bed, a slight pout on her lips.
“I promise I won’t disappoint you, but we do have a bit of business to attend to.”
“I’m not buying another ship from you. The last one sank.”
“A thousand apologies. That is the nature of ships though.” He sat down on a bench upholstered in crushed red velvet. “All games aside, our little game is going to have to stop for a while.” His face took on the appearance of actual seriousness for once. Bethra sat up.
“By the sound of it, we have a chance here to remove One Eye from this earth, but that will be much easier if we call a temporary truce.” He grinned. “As much as I enjoy playing with you, your footpads chasing me across Aloria is going to make my progress much more difficult. And I don’t believe you’re familiar with Lady Polgara’s temper.”
“I knew there was another woman.” Bethra threw her head back dramatically, hand on her forehead and gave a great sigh. Then she started to laugh. “Oh very well. I suppose a small break won’t do any harm.”
Silk crossed the room and knelt, taking her hand to kiss. “You truly are a gem among women.”
“You would know, wouldn’t you?”
“Are you accusing me of being a womanizer.”
“Of course I am!” Bethra laughed, sliding a hand under his chin to guide his face to hers. “That’s why I like you.”

I reread the Belgariad and Malloreon (MAJOR SPOILERS for both those series ahead, btw) and realized something about the latter that bothers me slightly as a big fan of Silk (Kheldar): he never gets a Task the way all the other companions do.
In the Belgariad, Silk has several super important moments, the biggest one obviously being killing Brill. Granted, in the first series not everyone's role is super obvious the way it is in the second series (I could be blanking, but I don't recall Hettar having a big moment to himself). But in the Malloreon, every companion gets a really emphasized Task that's the reason they had to come along at all, in addition to all the other generally helpful stuff they do. This is even discussed in character, such as when Ce'Nadra is convinced she's going to be the one to die because she thinks she didn't have a Task.
For the sake of comparison, I'll run through the companions and their Most Important Task:
Garion - Child of Light/Godslayer - choose successor
Belgarath - Beloved and Eternal - find and follow the secrets
Polgara - (no prophecy name afaik) - banish Chabat's demon
Durnik - Man With Two Lives - banish Nahaz
Poldara - Woman Who Watches - fight Zandramas
Eriond - Bearer of the Orb - become a God
Ce'Nedra - Queen of the World - let Zandramas know about Korim
Liselle - Huntress - kill Harakan (with Zith)
Sadi - Man Who Is No Man - kill Naradas
Zakath - Empty One - convert Mallorea (post-Choice)
Toth - Silent Man - confront dragon (argument could be made for his "betrayal" on Verkat as well)
Remember that Beldin isn't named in the prophecy, he's the plus-one they got to bring along since Zandramas brought more help than was legit (I'd guess the dragon-demon hybrid tipped the scales).
By contrast, the times when Silk is in focus in the story mostly have to do with people connected to him. Liselle is the one who realizes Urgit is his half-brother. Silk's factors in various cities give them important info. They run into a bunch of his hired mercs at one point. But Silk himself doesn't have a Thing He Does that's particularly useful.
On top of that, a lot of the roles he played in the Belgariad can be played by other teammates in the Mallorean. Velvet is young but clearly talented. Sadi is extremely good at what he does and is the one in charge of leading the party through Cthol Murgos. Beldin is exceptionally skilled at deception and he does the majority of leading everyone around Mallorea. And Durnik, in a memorable scene, shows that he's picked up enough from Silk to be quite a good backup spy.
I'd be interested to know (if there are any other fans still lurking around here watching the tags) if anyone disagrees with me, and if so why. Alternately, I'm tempted to write my own fic about Silk doing something Garion didn't witness, but I could use some ideas.

I'm re-reading the Belgariad (once again) and in book one Silk and Garion talk about Garion's heritage. Silk claims its impossible for Garion to be related to Pol. I wonder how often throughout the series Silk thinks about this conversation.

Incorrect Belgariad Quotes
Belgarath: What's in your pack, Silk?
Silk: Vodka.
Garion: You've brought an entire pack full of vodka?
Silk: Of course not! There's mixers as well, I'm not a savage. *pauses* You can mix vodka with wine, right?

Dry humor
What was that?“ Belgarath asked, coming back around the corner. “Brill,” Silk replied blandly, pulling his Murgo robe back on. “Again?” Belgarath demanded with exasperation. “What was he doing this time?” “Trying to fly, last time I saw him.” Silk smirked. The old man looked puzzled. “He wasn’t doing it very well,” Silk added. Belgarath shrugged. “Maybe it’ll come to him in time.” “He doesn’t really have all that much time.” Silk glanced out over the edge. “From far below - terribly far below - there came a faint, muffled crash; then, after several seconds, another. "Does bouncing count?” Silk asked. Belgarath made a wry face. “Not really.” “Then I’d say he didn’t learn in time.” Silk said blithely.
