I have been contacted by multiple multi-level marketing "job opportunities" this week.
It's starting to occur to me -- and nobody really tells you this -- that unless you are looking for something specific (and probably not entry-level), Indeed is not the place to look for jobs. I was applying for jobs pretty indiscriminately on there a few days ago, and have since been contacted by what looks to be multiple multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes.
Here are some red flags I've found in these job postings that point toward a pyramid structure:
[Company] is a [PR/marketing agency/local startup] that is looking for outgoing, motivated candidates who are just out of college or looking to make a career change!
[Company] will pay for you to be trained in business and sales, so don't worry if you don't have prior experience! This is an entry-level role with HUGE opportunities for growth!
You'll have networking and travel opportunities, such as leadership development conferences and seminars!
Sounds good, right? But if you look up these companies on Glassdoor, you'll either find nothing or you'll see a mix of reviews:
positive reviews from the current employees who are incentivized to talk up the company
negative reviews from former employees that will often flat-out tell you it's an MLM
there's a lot of repetition in the phrases you'll see across the board: "a great opportunity," high turnover/burnout, manipulative management, lack of transparency, no job security, "hard work pays off," "not for everyone"
sometimes you'll find out that the company was renamed from another company, and if you look that company up, you'll find even more bad reviews explicitly calling it a pyramid scheme/MLM
If you go to the company website, you'll see a clean interface with stock photos of people looking happy, and all of the "who we are" text on the site will be utter jargon that doesn't explicitly tell you what the company does. It will tell you, however, that they're hiring now!
If you make it to the interview portion, (which, if you apply, you almost certainly will, because these companies are preying on people who are desperate for a job) you will be rushed through an initial interview, which will look something like this:
You'll be interviewed alongside another candidate or in a group.
It's a quick 10-minute getting-to-know-you call so the company can see if it's a good fit.
They will ask you to tell them (in front of the other candidates) what you would bring that makes you stand out.
They will ask you if you have reliable transportation.
They will go over the "job description" without ever making it clear what the day-to-day looks like.
They'll tell you about how you're going to be trained in different departments. The departments will have names like "Marketing & sales," "HR & PR," "Leadership development," "Logistics, numbers, and operations," and "Client relations." This is an actual example from a Zoom interview I just did less than an hour ago. These are the "departments" of this company, according to my interviewer.
They'll emphasize that expansion is the goal. Top-level customer acquisition. Their clients are looking to open to new markets, so they're looking for go-getters to quickly fill the role.
IF YOU ASK A QUESTION ABOUT THE COMPANY, THEY WILL DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER NOT TO ANSWER IT. They'll tell you that you'll have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you want if you make it to round two; they'll tell you they have another interview in 2 minutes and don't have time to answer your questions; they'll repeat that this is a preliminary getting-to-know-you call, so there's no need to get into the details just yet.
If you do manage to get a question in, they'll put as vague & positive a spin on it as they can. I asked if the company I interviewed with was a new company (because I couldn't find it on BBB or Glassdoor) and the interviewer told me yes, it's a "branch-off company" to a company that's been around for a few years. He did not tell me what that company was, and I didn't ask, because at that point I knew I wouldn't get a straightforward answer either way.
Y'all, if you find a job that raises any red flags for you, DO YOUR RESEARCH. You should be looking up any company that reaches out to you. Find their website. Read their reviews on Glassdoor and Better Business Bureau. BE SMART AND DON'T LET THESE COMPANIES PREY ON YOU.

Bill's Bible Basics Used to be Endtime Prophecy Net As some of my longtime friends will know, since about the middle of 2016, my online Christian ministry has been known as Bill's Bible Basics, and can be found at https://www.billkochman.com. However, what some of my newer friends probably do not know, is that prior to July of 2016, the BBB ministry was known as Endtime Prophecy Net. In fact, it was called by the latter name since the year 2000 when I first purchased the domain names endtimeprophecy. net and endtimeprophecy. org. Furthermore, it was during the early part of those sixteen years that I began to create the over 5,000 Bill's Bible Basics graphics which now populate many corners of the Internet, such as on eight of the major social networks. For reasons which I have explained before, in July of 2016, I took both www.endtimeprophecy. net and www.endtimeprophecy. org offline, and I replaced them with https://www.billkochman.com. It was the same content as before, but with a new ministry name, and a new website URL. While I took them offline at that time, I did not fully relinquish ownership of those two domain names until November of 2017 when my registration for them expired. So why am I sharing the previous information with you? Well, for several reasons. First of all, given the nature of the Internet, many of the original versions of my graphics are still floating around on the Internet. These original and older versions have the domain name www.endtimeprophecy. net on them. Since creating all of those original versions years ago, ALL of my graphics have been both enlarged, as well as updated and improved in quality, making them better than the originals. You will know if you are looking at a newer version of one of my graphics, because the domain name on it will be www.billkochman.com, and NOT www.endtimeprophecy. net. One reason why I am telling you this is because I really don't want anyone sharing the older versions of my graphics which have www.endtimeprophecy. net on them. One of the main reasons behind my making this request is the following: After I relinquished endtimeprophecy. net and endtimeprophecy. org back in 2016, some unscrupulous person -- who remains unknown to me -- purchased the endtimeprophecy. net domain name, and for years now they have been using the domain name to advertise a hotel chain. Obviously, it has absolutely nothing to do with our Christian faith. So what they are doing is both dishonest, as well as misleading. If you put www.endtimeprophecy. net in the location field of your web browser, you will be taken to a page which shows a very old -- and broken -- version of the Endtime Prophecy Net website. Of course, none of the links will work, because the site is dead, and the page is bogus. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see a pile of links for the aforementioned hotel chain. So as I said, that person is using my old domain name for dishonest and misleading purposes. They are using our faith, and my former website name and website URL as bait. Shame on them! For the record, a few years ago, I made efforts to get them to stop, but they refused to even communicate with me. Furthermore, I was unable to locate any information regarding the ISP they are using. So, it was basically a dead end, and they have continued with their scam. So that is why I am asking everyone to please NOT use or share any of my old graphics which have www.endtimeprophecy. net on them. Because if you do, you will be unintentionally leading people to that bogus website. Please direct all of your online friends to Bill's Bible Basics at https://www.billkochman.com instead. All of my original content -- articles and series, poetry, graphics, KJV Bible Verse Lists, etc. -- can be found there. Regarding the endtimeprophecy. org domain name, if you attempt to go there in your web browser, you will be taken to a page which contains a number of related links, and which will inform you that endtimeprophecy. org is for sale, and that it can be purchased via networksolutions. com. Let me also mention that over the years, certain dishonest individuals -- particularly on Facebook -- have stolen literally thousands of my images, altered them, and chopped them up. In particular, they intentionally remove my www.billkochman.com website URL from the graphics, and they place their own URL there instead, or something else. Again, this is shameful, and a poor Christian example. In conclusion, I hope you all continue to enjoy and are blessed and edified by the material which I freely share online via the Bill's Bible Basics website, the Bill's Bible Basics Blog, and on the various social networks. 2023 Challenge Rules
Please note that the rules have changed from last year's, including eligibility criteria and content requirements.

Eligibility
Participants must be 18+.
Participants do not need experience with fanworks or fan events; the event is open to all levels of experience and skill.
You may register as both an author and artist, but you may not make art for your own fic.
Expectations
Participants agree to be respectful and kind in community spaces and to other members of the challenge.
Participants must meet defined deadlines and listen to mods or risk being expelled from the challenge. Dropping out after art claims may result in being banned from future challenges. 
You are expected to read, understand, and adhere to the challenge rules. Failure to adhere to the challenge rules may result in disqualification from future rounds. If you do not understand something, it is your responsibility to contact the mods for clarification.
You must have reliable internet and email access.
No participant may offer services in exchange for payment or solicit donations/tips from other participants for any work they do as part of the BBB.
You will be paired with a partner through Art Claims and may not form your own teams. As is the spirit of challenges, you never know who you will be paired with. We ask that you be open and communicative with each other, and work together to make your posting date requests to avoid any conflict. At no point may you drop your team member and choose a new one on your own. If you are having trouble with your partner, please contact the mods for a solution.
All posted art or fics should remain publicly available for at least one year. 
Art
Artists must create 1 full piece of visual art for fics claimed. You are free to create more than the minimum number of required pieces at your discretion.
Video edits, playlists, etc only count as a full piece of art for pinch-hitters
Artists cannot work on more than 1 fic unless they are pinch-hitters
All materials and styles of art are welcome, including traditional and digital, illustration of photo manipulation
Art should be a minimum of 540px wide if it will be posted to tumblr, but the final size and orientation are up to the artist.
AI art is explicitly forbidden. All art must be your own original creation. 
Art can be embedded in the fic (if the author permits it), posted to the artist’s website of choice, or both. Where art is hosted is at the artist’s discretion.
Fics
Fics must be a minimum of 10,000 words
All fics must tag all relevant warnings even if they are potential spoilers
Your fic must be at least 50% complete with the remainder outlined to qualify for Art Claims.
Authors may not share about their work outside the private authors channel until after art claims to preserve anonymity
Your work should be brand new for the challenge or a previously unpublished WIP, and no part of it may have been published prior to Art Claims (this includes sneak peeks on social media).
Fics must be written in English. If you are multilingual and would like to publish the fic in other languages as translations of the original after the Byler Big Bang posting period is complete, that’s very welcome!
Finished fics must be posted to Archive of Our Own publicly. There will be an official AO3 collection for this round and all fics are expected to be added. You may cross-post (for example, to Tumblr, Wattpad, etc.) but Ao3 is the minimum requirement. 
Each author may write a maximum of one fic for this round. If you co-write, that fulfills your eligibility for the round. You may not submit a second fic as a solo author or as part of a second writing team.
If you are co-writing, each author must register individually. Do not sign up as a pair. We need each participant to agree to receive emails.
Dropping Out
If you can’t complete the Byler Big Bang, please contact the mods and we’ll remove you from our mailing list. Be aware there may be penalties depending on when you drop out (please see below).
Do not use social media to announce drops, since we don’t want your partner finding out that way.
If you have already gone through claims and need to drop, please contact the mods immediately so we can arrange for pinch hitters. You must contact your author or artist directly to let them know you’re dropping out. Please know that you may not be eligible to participate in the next round of the Byler Big Bang if you drop post-claims for anything less than an emergency.
In the event that an artist drops out of the challenge before posting occurs, the moderator team will work to find a pinch hit artist for their author. If an author drops, artists will be offered the opportunity to post their art on their original posting date.
In the event of an emergency, please contact the mods as soon as it is reasonably possible and safe for you to do so. We will work with you in any way we can.

This reading was perfect timing for when I was going home for the weekend. I went to my home in Bethlehem, PA this weekend (mainly for the Halloween parade). I got to see lots of teachers I had while being in that district and it brought up lots of memories. It just so happened to be the week an article talked about the schools in Bethlehem. This made me think of past experiences I have had going through schools in this school district myself. I thought about how things were before 2015 when Silva decided to make a change. When my younger brother and I were in a BASD elementary school we both experienced the literacy taught there. After switching schools after two years my brother had a completely different instruction for literacy than I did. He seemed to struggle a lot more and even had to be pulled out for extra help. The two different schools had different ways of teaching foundational skills and that was clearly seen with how my brother, and I did. But now that I think about it, when I look back to when I did the BBBS program in high school I was exposed to literacy work in the elementary schools (after the change). I remember thinking this is not how they taught this when I went to school here, and it seemed like the students I worked with were excited about it compared to how my brother dreaded it. Overall, it is interesting to see the change. Especially with doing this exploration, it allowed me to think about my experiences and relate to the article on a deeper level. I just think it was cool to see an article and the data on the schools that I have had years of experience with, especially the struggling schools that I have worked with as a high schooler. But it just gets me thinking about how schools can change. I just never questioned it or how things were taught because I never thought I would come across an article about the schools I go to. So, it brings a new perspective.
