Publishers’ Binding Thursday

This Publishers’ Binding Thursday we bring you this cheery little book. It is Speculum Amantis: Love-Poems from Rare Song-Books and Miscellanies of the Seventeenth Century. It is a collection of love poems edited by English scholar, editor, and publisher Arthur Henry (A.H.) Bullen (1857-1920). Bullen was a 16th- and 17-century specialist and founder of the Shakespeare Head Press, now an imprint of Wiley-Blackwell. This edition of Speculum Amantis was published in 1902 and was privately printed by Lowe & Brydone Printers Ltd. in Camden Town, London. 

The binding is very nice, with a pattern of small flowers and stars set in a diamond-patterned border. The book cloth is a teal blue color, which sets the gold stamping off nicely. On the spine are the same patterns, along with the title and the editor’s name, and, unfortunately, a call number sticker.
