Telehealth is a great alternative to traditional face-to-face therapy, especially during this uncertain time. Did you know that research has even shown that tele-health services are just as effective as face-face services? They are not meant to replace face-to-face services, but a great alternative for continued progress when face-to-face therapy is not feasible. It allows for greater understanding of therapy and provides additional support for carry over of strategies at home. Telehealth is the perfect opportunity to provide occupation-based coaching. Occupation-based coaching directly involves caregivers in creating strategies to increase a child’s participation in daily activities across natural environments. When performed via telehealth, it has been found to significantly increase parent involvement in the therapy process. It helps parents engage with their children in play activities and try more skill-based activities during everyday routines, especially parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It’s SLP Day! Today we celebrate the over 140,000 SLPs in our field. Did you know Speech-Language Pathology has been a field since the 1920s?! The field came about to help treat soldiers with brain injury following WWI. SLPs now work with all age ranges and in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, outpatient clinics, private practices, and rehabilitation centers. A master’s degree is required to practice and a nine-month fellowship post-graduation. SLPs work with children and adults with disorders in articulation, language, fluency, voice, hearing, social-pragmatics, feeding, AAC, and swallowing. The Importance of Family Meals Family meals provide an opportunity for family members to come together, strengthen ties and build better relationships. They build a sense of belonging which leads to better self-esteem! Family meals offer parents a chance to be role models and teach the social experience of eating. During family meals, the focus should be on food, not electronics or distractions. Talk about all the properties of the meal including texture, taste, look, smell, temperature, and so on. Make it a learning experience and let them pick a few choices for meals or snack time. Family meals should be fun. We need to encourage them, and ourselves, to play at mealtime and have fun! It is also important to let kids be as independent as possible. Let your kids feed themselves, make their own plates, make a mess, and then help with clean-up after the meal is over. Practice family style serving with foods being passed around the table. This gives children the opportunities to explore foods at their own pace. Take a Pause! One of the strategies we use in speech therapy is “wait time.” This is an anticipatory pause used while making eye contact with a child to signal it is his turn to speak in the conversation. These pauses are great to use with routine phrases such as “my turn” that have been practiced over and over or prior to turning a page in a book for “turn the page.” You can build routine phrases into most of the everyday activities with your child. Once your child has practice repeating the phrase over and over, he may be ready to have you throw in a pause and let him take the lead! At first, a child may not have the expressive language to formulate the idea independently, and wait time paired with a gesture or sign or even the first word of the sentence can help to cue the child and allow him to be successful and more verbally independent than a direct imitation. Articulation therapy is going great over the computer! Here, a picture from the therapist’s computer is being shared on our friend’s computer at home. They are using this “magic slide” to learn the correct tongue placement for the “S” sound. The “T” sound is shaped into the “S” sound as they go down the slide. Picture cards can be used for many things! These cards came from the game Headbandz. Here our friend is working on expanding her receptive vocabulary. She is identifying objects when the therapist describes their appearance or their function, without being able to see the card. She then sorts them into their category to help create connections and associations with the vocabulary items. Learning vocabulary is more than being able to state the name of something, but also knowing and explaining the functions, actions, descriptions, and associations of these words.
