i really want those clearmasks to become a large scale thing bc it really sucks when i need to wear a mask and someone needs to see my mouth to understand me (or vice versa) so our options are a) take off the mask and get more exposed to MCAS triggers or b) don’t take off the mask and then we can’t communicate

Do you and/or your followers have any suggestions for protecting my Deaf/HoH clients who rely on lipreading, when I have to take my mask off to communicate with them? We're trying to follow social distancing rules, but this is not always feasible due to the physical setup of my workplace, and I don't want my deaf clients to be in even greater danger than the general population from needing to bring their cats to the vet.

ClearMask is currently accepting pre-orders for a clear, supposedly nonfogging mask. Priorities are being given to medical persons, but I think vet work might be covered in that.

Solution for masked signers. ClearMask™ There are a couple more inventions along this line floating around too.

Yes, there have been few face masks similar to this used, but they are usually more expensive and harder to produce, especially home made, compared to usual masks. Most deaf people I know use usual masks, I have only seen interpreters on TV with special see-through masks.

Take a Pause! One of the strategies we use in speech therapy is “wait time.” This is an anticipatory pause used while making eye contact with a child to signal it is his turn to speak in the conversation. These pauses are great to use with routine phrases such as “my turn” that have been practiced over and over or prior to turning a page in a book for “turn the page.” You can build routine phrases into most of the everyday activities with your child. Once your child has practice repeating the phrase over and over, he may be ready to have you throw in a pause and let him take the lead! At first, a child may not have the expressive language to formulate the idea independently, and wait time paired with a gesture or sign or even the first word of the sentence can help to cue the child and allow him to be successful and more verbally independent than a direct imitation. My first look at ClearMask, the first FDA approved clear facemask, which is often used for doctor's appointments, etc. for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
