Thoughts Revised (or “Reflections”)
My Medium still gets about a dozen views a day, which isn’t monetized in any sort of way...but it’s a lot more attention than this Tumblr blog gets, especially considering how old those Medium posts are.  I suspect that this has something to do with the Medium layout--WYSIWYG used to be an abbreviation only known to web developers, but now anyone can sign up with Medium.com and write posts that look pretty professional.
That some people think Medium is a news site is a bit deceptive, but still speaks to just how great the site is.
It’s also way easier to find on Google, and the interface is more intuitive, and it’s more interesting to interact with.  Of all the areas I’ve had the privilege to explore in software engineering, UI/UX is by far the most interesting...and I’m only now scratching the surface in the actual field.  It’s about appearance.  It’s about interactivity.  It’s one of the only areas of our job that I would say has a subjective, artistic aspect to it as opposed to just being straight science or straight logic.
And I do like Medium, but it gets me off on an interesting tangent...
Presentation.
*****
I used to write at length on Tumblr (oh, the irony) about how social media was destroying everything.  I don’t agree with myself anymore.  Sharing experience and communicating it to a wide number of people has existed since the invention of the printing press--hell, it’s existed since the invention of writing.  Jordan Peterson describes YouTube as one of the greatest innovations of our time.  Still, it feels...different.  Reality has no single plot.  Reality has no lofi soundtrack, no quality camera that exaggerates the sound of my keyboard typing over the sound of the garbage truck outside, no ability to shift camera angle to make the audience less cognizant of a person’s latest pimple.  And video quality in this day and age really does a good job of filtering reality.  You see the shine, hear the pleasant sound...you don’t waste too much time watching a vlog and seeing a person bored.  Now and then, I’ll encounter vlogs that parody this by filming something really unpleasant and mundane.  I’m amused by that, but it doesn’t have the same appeal.
*****
Things are going okay.  What I have right now, the more I think about it, is a job that’s okay.
We are learning.  We are doing something real.  The advantage of this job, in a word, is stability.  This company will still exist, in all probability, long after we leave.  It’s already proven that even in a downturn, it can still avoid laying people off by having them support other efforts remotely.  And the pay is...not bad.  According to conversion sites like Payscale, the salary is actually pretty competitive.
Whatever advantages this company has are arguably overshadowed by the negative aspects of working at a big company.  It’s difficult to learn enough to stay competitive with someone who works in...say...the valley.  There isn’t that same rollercoaster, the disparity between the high achievers and the laggers...it’s like everything is painted in gray.  And I did an internship at a software company in San Francisco for all of 12 weeks, and I still can’t get over the “shine” of it.  It’s like we were treated like royalty just to enter the building, whereas here it seems more difficult to distinguish the treatment of those who achieve little from those who single-handedly prop up the company.
At the end of the day, I think my difference is something a little more philosophical.  That people can have a life outside of this company is what some would describe as its best selling point.  But I don’t know if I agree, at least at this stage in life.  I think people should really believe in something, enough to work long hours, enough to forgo certain pleasures, enough to be able to talk about it with passion and to drink the figurative kool-aid without the poison, so to speak.  But then the best of us will disappear, maybe to the valley (some already have), and they’ll just be with a ton of other people who share that grind mentality.  And there’s probably a balancing point, but I don’t know if we’ve reached it just yet.
Stability has been making me think about something...
*****
Let’s say you want to buy a house in San Francisco.  I’m just going to make this baseless assumption that you have to put down 20% down payment to be competitive.  Okay.  A good house in San Francisco is around 2 million, so that’s 400K.
...which seems totally crazy to people in Sacramento, who can buy a house for the down payment on a good San Francisco house.  But then there are people who think it’s crazy how much Californians pay for the cost of living, and actually Sacramento might be starting to get to the place where people leave because of the rising cost of living.
If you’re a tech person, maybe you work at some unheard of startup.  Maybe your dream is to work at a FAANG, so that people are instantly impressed at parties.  So you do it.  You work at Facebook.  Then you work at Google, because Google is the best of the five (why is Netflix even still on it), and then maybe you burn out or simply realize that what you really wanted all along was to work at some unheard of startup.  Or parttime.  Or teaching.  One of the most successful people I ever met in my life was content to teach a computer class at my high school...he didn’t even fight for a second section of the AP computer science class.  And I don’t recall him being miserable, in spite of dealing with people like me who had trouble locating the Start menu.
It’s a bit like college.  Maybe you go into college thinking that UC Davis is for the UC Berkeley rejects but CSU is for the UC rejects...but those in Berkeley maybe wanted to get into Ivy League.  And then there’s that hierarchy of Ivy League, and all the while people seem to have kind of lost sight of the fact that there are huge tuition differences, or that the goal isn’t to go to the college with the lowest admission rate but that either provided the highest future salary or the best education.
I find it insane that people in the valley can make three or four times as much as me, but then their future house is five times more than one in my area would be.  And on and on it goes.  Bigger things.  Shinier things.  Better experiences.
Until eventually, we’re finally done, and maybe then we have the wisdom to put all of this into perspective.
