i'm glad you posted about that brand lifting your edit bc i wanted to get something from them and i suspect a lot of their designs are probably stolen too so i'm not gonna buy from them
Hey Anon!
I'm glad you found my post and thought better of it :). I suspect much of the same. Also I've seen several other people warning potential buyers about their pieces being poor quality.
Tumblr media
Doesn't seem worth it to me.

hi! I DIY most of my lolita wardrobe myself, either sewing or modifying non-loli clothes. I also love to embroider. For some of my handmade items like blouses, I was thinking of embroidering a small brand logo (like the moitie candelabra/Btssb heart logo) above the bust like some brands do. I wouldn't pass these off as actual brand, but Im wondering if people would think this is tacky somehow. I don't have much of a following so I will probably do this anyway. Just wondering how ppl feel abt it!
Okay, full honesty, you seem to know how people are going to react to it, because you asked me this question. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But I'm going to answer it anyway. Yeah, some people aren't going to like it. I think the would have good reason to not like it. There's sort of an idea that putting the brand logo on the garment is attempting to pass it off as original. U.S. copyright law will agree with this opinion. After all, you can't put the Coach logo on a bag and then get away with it by saying, "But I never SAID it was Coach, I just put the logo there!" There's a lot of non-brand motifs that you could do that would convey a similar feeling.
However, if you really want to do the brand logo specifically, you're missing an absolutely amazing opportunity to both protect yourself from accusations of misconduct, and to elevate the concept into something better. We're going to call this the Johnson Guitar Skerple Protocol:
Tumblr media
It's not at all uncommon to have a brand attempt to style its logo in a way that will definitely draw to mind (or easily be mistaken for) a more well-known brand.
Johnson Guitars makes budget guitars, and has previously been sued for Fender for making instruments too close to Fender's patents. Generally, the branding on a guitar is on the headstock, and viewed from a distance. The way that Johnson's J is styled to be very, very similar to Fender's F allows a Johnson guitar to more easily be mistaken for a much higher quality instrument.
The Skerple was tumblr famous for a hot minute back in 2012. Someone bought permanent markers at the Dollar Tree thinking they were Sharpie brand, only to look closer and realize they were, in fact, Skerple brand. The entire name "Skerple" appears to be very carefully chosen so that the letters have very similar shapes to the Sharpie styling. And the fun thing about the Skerple situation was that everyone thought it was really funny. It's assumed to be a household name, but it's actually an impostor. The unexpected element of it makes it amusing. Putting a near-brand logo on your handmade piece gives people a bit of fun when they look up close.
Tumblr media
And if you are planning on taking brand-adjacent logos and putting them on non-brand things, there's nothing stopping you from elevating the concept even further and making it a little bit funny. Here's a patch I made with the Baby, the Stars Shine Bright logo, but where it says BTSSBITCH instead of BTSSB on it.
There's nothing stopping you from giving a little easter egg to people who want to closely examine the work that you've done. Honestly, it might be prudent to do so, since putting the brand logo on an item is inherently claiming that the piece was work made by them. Copying a design and copying a logo are somewhat different issues, and if you're wondering if the mainstream lolita community might have a problem with it, and I think this is a case where they have good reason to.

Design Qandy’s Take: Is DIY Luxurious?
Luxury is often associated with expensive, store-bought items. But what if luxury could be created through do-it-yourself projects? Is DIY luxurious? Not unless you’re ready to spend a lifetime learning the artisan techniques that luxurious goods require. DIY projects can add a sense of richness and refinement to your home, but often at a greater cost than seeking the right home goods suppliers. Here are a few tips to make your DIY projects look luxurious.
What is Luxury?
Tumblr media
If you want to have a luxurious home, there are some important factors to keep in mind. First, your interior design should be on point. Make sure you choose furniture and décor that fit together well and create a pleasing aesthetic. Second, the layout of your home should be well-planned and human-centric. That means each room should flow nicely and be designed with functionality in mind. Third, pay attention to the little details. From your doormat to your light fixtures, every element in your home should exude luxury. By following these tips, you can create a space that feels truly luxurious.
The Rise of DIY Culture
The Line Between Luxury and Necessity
As the world progresses, the line between luxury and necessity gradually becomes blurred. What was once considered a luxurious item is now seen as a household staple. This is especially true when it comes to interior design.
Nowadays, many people consider items like granite countertops and stainless steel appliances to be necessities in their homes. In the past, these items were only seen in high-end residences and were out of reach for most people.
As interior design trends change, so does the definition of what is considered a luxury item. For example, wallpaper was once seen as a luxurious item that was only used in wealthy homes. However, wallpaper has become more popular in recent years and is now seen as more of a necessity than a luxury.
Artisan vs DIY: Which Is Right for Your Home Interior Design Project?
When it comes to home interior design, there are two schools of thought: artisanal and DIY. Artisan design relies on the expertise of a master craftsman to create luxurious, one-of-a-kind pieces. DIY projects, on the other hand, are typically more time-intensive and require a lower level of expertise so you can do them yourself.
Artisanal decor is all about luxurious, one-of-a-kind pieces that are handmade with the utmost care. From ceramics and marble to wood and metal, there’s an artisanal piece to suit every taste.
Whether you’re looking for a statement piece for your living room or a more understated addition to your bedroom, artisanal decor is the way to go. Not only are these pieces beautiful, but they’re also made with the highest quality materials.
https://www.designqandy.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/artisanal-decor-1024x683.webp
So, which is right for you? If you’re looking for a unique, high-end look for your home, an artisan designer is probably your best bet. A DIY project might be the way to go if you’re working with a tight budget or timeline, though the result is typically incomparable to the efforts of a master artisan with years of expertise.
So, Is DIY Luxurious? Here’s What We Think
In conclusion, DIY is not luxurious. It is a way to save money and be creative. It is a way to be self-reliant and learn new skills. It is a way to bond with friends and family. So, next time you are considering whether or not to DIY, remember that it is not about being luxurious, it is about being resourceful.  If you are looking for a high-end, luxurious home design, you should definitely work with us. The internationally trained team of designers at Design Qandy are backed by a powerful AI and human-centric design principles that help them turn every house or apartment into a personalised place where you can always feel at home. Take the DQ Style Test today to get started!

Choosing a rune set: A beginner's guide
Tumblr media
by Michelle Gruben
Thinking about taking up the runes? Mastery of the runes can take many years, but it is not difficult for a beginner to learn the basics. (Much as young children can quickly learn their ABCs.) The first learning tool you’ll need is a rune set of your own, to begin familiarizing yourself with this ancient system of knowledge.
First, some background: Runes are archaic European letters used in magick and divination. The best-known runic alphabet is the Elder Futhark, which contains 24 symbols. There are other rune systems, such as the Younger Futhark, Northumbrian runes, and Witches' runes. But most of the time, when people talk about reading runes, they are referring to the Elder Futhark, which fell out of use as an alphabet around the 8th century AD.
Each rune has a threefold meaning: A phonetic sound (as a letter of the alphabet), a mundane object or action that it stands for, and a mystical or abstract significance. Rune-casting—or reading the runes—is a way to activate intuition and gather information about the past, present and future. Runic symbols have powerfully condensed meaning. Sometimes, a single letter says something that paragraphs cannot.
Make or buy?
Tumblr media
Making your own set of rune stones or tiles is an excellent way to begin to learn the runic symbols. Painting or carving the runes can be a kind of meditation, and help to infuse your new rune set with your energy. Depending on your level of craftiness and the tools/materials available to you, making your first rune set can be a great option that lets you express your creativity.
On the other hand, there are many beautiful rune sets for sale—many made with materials and techniques that would not be practical to replicate at home. Investing in a pre-made rune set that calls to you can be an equally good beginning to your runic studies.
Tumblr media
Usually, rune sets for sale at metaphysical stores include the 24 Elder Futhark runes. Most also have one blank (or “wyrd”) rune that acts as a wild card. A drawstring bag or box and a set of basic instructions may also come with your runes. However, don’t feel that you have to use any of these items just because they were sold as a set. Rune-reading practices vary greatly, and eventually you will settle on a method that works for you.
Making your own runes
Tumblr media
If you go the route of making your own Elder Futhark runes, you will need 24 roughly equal-sized objects that will become your rune tiles. (25 if you wish to include a blank rune.) Your backyard or local craft store probably has something that can be made into runes. (Be sure to practice good magickal etiquette if you take something from nature.) Wooden nickels, tree branch slices, earthen clay, and even glass aquarium gems all make serviceable homemade runes.
Obviously, some materials are more durable than others. I made my first set of runes with flat rocks gathered from a streambed. I didn’t realize that they were made out of fragile sedimentary rock. They flaked and crumbled to pieces after several weeks of being dry. Uncured wood will split, and painted symbols will chip off when the runes tumble together in a bag. It may take some trial and error to make a rune set that can endure being carried around and used in readings. Wood-burning, clear-coating, kiln-firing and engraving are all crafting techniques that will help your handmade runes stand up to wear and tear.
Materials
Tumblr media
Rune sets can be made from a staggering variety of materials: Glass, bone, antler, wood, gemstone, ceramic, metals, and common stones. What you choose mainly depends on your preferences and budget. What feels most magickal to you?
Tumblr media
Bone runes are made from cleaned animal bones, which are then painted or engraved with the runic symbols. (I’ll admit that bone items personally skeeve me out, but many Witches who work closely with the animal kingdom love them.)  If you collect bones, or know someone who does, you can create your own set from the bones of a special animal. Commercial bone runes are usually made from water buffalo bone—a byproduct of meat and dairy farming in Asia.
Antler runes are made from cross-sections of deer antlers. Antlers are fast-growing bones, and their magickal properties are similar to bone. Antler runes would be a marvelous choice for a rune-reader who connects with Stag energy. (Both bone and antler runes look like puppy treats to dogs—so keep your prized rune set away from Fido.)
Tumblr media
Wood runes can be made from nearly any type of wood. You may wish to choose one of the folkloric magickal woods for your rune set (Oak, Ash, Elder), or some other wood with a personal significance. Wood runes may be painted, engraved, woodburned—or a combination of these methods. A sealant or varnish gives the wood a lovely sheen and helps protect the symbols, but many rune-readers prefer to keep it all natural with a light coating of oil or beeswax.
Tumblr media
Stone runes are made with precious gems, semi-precious stones, or even ordinary pebbles. Some Norse Pagans I know insist that wood and bone are the only proper materials for rune tiles. Rune stones, they say, are a modern, New Age invention.
Even so, gemstone rune sets—which combine the metaphysical lore of crystals with the runic alphabet—are probably the most popular type of rune set among Wiccans and Pagans. Gemstone runes are pleasingly heavy when cast, and undeniably beautiful to work with. You can choose your gemstone rune set based on the magickal properties of the stone—Amethyst for intuition, Jasper for courage, Hematite for protection, etc.
Tumblr media
Ceramic runes include rune tiles made from air-dried, oven-baked, or kiln-fired clay. (The latter is the most durable.) They are popular with DIY-ers, and those who connect especially with the element of Earth. One of my favorite artisans makes rune sets from fragments of pottery that have washed ashore in her coastal town—they are unique and colorful runes of Earth and sea!
Tumblr media
Glass runes and pewter runes are specialty items that are hard to find. Though these materials are made by humans, they are perfectly appropriate for magickal work if they appeal to you.
Are there any materials that should not be made into runes? I’m a magickal pragmatist. I’m into what works, and I don’t have much regard for sacred cows. But. As a magickal pragmatist, it’s perfectly fair to point out that the runes work best when treated with the utmost respect and dignity. Odin, it is told, hung on the World Tree for nine days and nine nights in order to receive the secret of the runes. It just seems wrong to look up the symbols on Pinterest and start carving them onto Styrofoam.
You can argue, I suppose, that since the runes are a sacred alphabet, they sanctify everything they touch. And yet, I have an instinctive revulsion toward runes made from paper, wood composites, and plastics (polymer clay included).
The runic symbols are worthy of great reverence—but there are no absolutes when it comes to selecting rune tiles. I recently broke my own rules and added a set of inexpensive resin runes to my store. I wouldn’t want a lack of money to prevent anyone from studying the runes. Even a basic set of runes can become a powerful tool in the hands of a serious seeker.
Size and Shape
Tumblr media
All settled about the material? It’s time to spare a bit of thought on the size of your runes. Runes, especially gemstone runes, may be as small as a half-inch—too small to be practical for most readers. Basically, you want the rune set to be easy to read, and to feel comfortable in your hands. If you’re going to be reading for others, or in low light, go a bit larger. Even big runes are really travel-sized!
Rune tiles vary in size and shape, even within the same set. If you use the “blind draw” method of rune-reading (putting your hand in the bag and feeling around), it becomes more important for the runes to be a fairly uniform size.
Tumblr media
One final consideration is the shape of the runes: Flat, round, symmetrical? Round-ish runes are fine for drawing from the bag. But if you want to lay your runes out in lines or grids, tile-shaped is the way to go.
Some rune readers—but not all—read “reversed” runes. Reversals give a different meaning when a rune lands face-down, or upside-down. If your rune tiles are very round and/or symmetrical, it will be more difficult to tell when a rune comes up reversed. Some runes (like Isa and Gebo) look the same whether they're upright or inverted. If getting the reversed meaning is important to you, get an asymmetrical set and memorize the orientation.
Choosing your first rune set can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Pick a set you're drawn to, learn the symbols, and begin using the power of the runes to transform your life and magick!

The kind of gifts the Kombatants give their s/o
I know I have a few requests just sitting in my drafts that I should be working instead but I felt compelled to write something short and sweet for the holidays.
-
Cassie Cage
Just like her dad she’s a big spender, but just like her mother she values experiences and memories over material items. she’ll most likely put that money into plane tickets and hotel rooms for a big trip she has planned for the two of you. Maybe she’ll take you backpacking across Europe, skydiving, or scuba diving, you’ll never truly know with her.
Jacqui Briggs
Jacqui is big on extremely personal gifts. She’ll get you something that only the two of you can enjoy, perhaps because it has to do with a “thing” the two you have. Maybe it’s a reference to a fond memory you both share, or maybe it’s a silly inside joke only you will get. Either way Jacqui will make sure you know that she cherishes every little personal moment between the two of you.
Jax Briggs
Being a bit of a homebody, he’ll usually go for a grand gesture rather than a material item. He might make a lavish Christmas dinner for you and Jacqui, or perhaps compile some home movies or photos of the two of you to put in those fancy digital photo frames so you can keep it on your desk at work; basically anything that reminds you of him and how much he cares.
Johnny Cage
This man goes all out for the holidays. He will buy you something expensive and he will make Cassie hide off to the side with a camcorder to record your reaction when he gives it to you. If you’re not one for lavish gifts however, he’s thought of that two. He’ll buy you exactly what you want and donate the rest of the money he had put aside towards your gift to a charity of your choosing.
Kung Jin
He’s more a quantity or quality kind of person when it comes to gifts. He knows what you like and would rather keep things simple and have you do the same for him. What’s your favorite candy? Favorite snack food? Think long and hard about your answer because Kung Jin is going to Costco to get you a 3 month supply of it.
Kung Lao
First and foremost he wants to impress you, but having taken a vow a poverty he can’t exactly do that with dollar signs. He goes for something handmade instead. He will spend weeks planning exactly what to make and how to make it. His true diy skills lie in metal work, so he will make you lovely jewelry, being sure to incorporate something personal to you, whether it be a birthstone, favorite plant, animal etc, anything that tells you he knows you better than anyone else.
Liu Kang
Liu Kang is a bit of a people pleaser so he’s always listening intently to you to learn what exactly you like. He won’t go for the obvious, but he’ll go for something he thinks no one else thought to give you. All that to say yes he did remember that one time like 5 months ago you mentioned you really liked this thing an yes he did immediately go and get it for you the next day and stored it in his closet until the holidays. Liu Kang always remembers.
Raiden
Raiden loves you and he loves Earthrealm. He wants to gift you with something he hopes you love as much as he does, so he decides to give you a beautiful plant. This is not just any plant however, this is something he grew and raised himself specifically for the purpose of eventually giving to you. He places it in a beautiful handmade clay planter that he has carved your name into the bottom of. He helps you take care of it, absolutely loving having this living thing the two of you can both care for together.
Takahashi Kenshi
Let’s be real Kenshi will know exactly what to get you and you won’t have to even tell him. Because there’s never much of an element of surprise however, Kenshi likes to tack on some quality time with his gifts. He’ll take you out for a nice dinner, a walk through your favorite park, and will end the day by giving you his gift.
Takahashi Takeda
Like father like son, so you won’t need to tell him what you want because he’s 3 steps ahead of you. Unlike his dad however he’ll try to playfully throw you off his scent by purposely dropping vague, probably untrue hints as to what he has planned for you. He’ll also draw out the wait as much as possible just to bug you. He’ll have you baking cookies with him all day, or marathoning some classic holiday movies and then after all is said and done he’ll give you his gift.

Sometimes going one place leads me somewhere else. Like I went to a tea party and then ended up with a ticket to the Seoul International Handmade Fair. The Seoul International Handmade Fair was held at the DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) and hosted a variety of small vendors selling the things they made.
With something like a handmade fair you never really know what exactly you’ll find. Since I was given the invite by a tea shop owner I was thinking it might be more food related but it really was a handmade fair. Almost anything that people had made themselves was set up in booths broken up into two parts. A Korean section that was huge and a much smaller international section.
Tumblr media
I went with two friends, tickets were about 10,000won and my assumption that my invite was a ticket was correct. Our first stop was to get wrist bands. We were also given forms to fill out. Out of all the festivals and events I’ve been to I’ve never had so many forms to fill out. It wasn’t anything scary, it was just time consuming. We filled out the questionnaire when we got there, basic stuff: How did you hear about it? How many times have you been to this one specifically? What are your goals? Where are you from? Ect. Basic questionnaires. Then on the way out they stopped us again for another one: How much did you buy? What can we improve? Do you think you’ll come back? Will you tell your friends? How’d we do?
Tumblr media
Things that can be improved: Oh boy was it crowded. It was difficult to stay in one spot and look at things when the crowd was also trying to push past and do their own things. More than once I had to walk past a vendor I was interested in looking at, wait for the mob of people behind me to pass and then go back. Or I gave up and kept going. It was only worse in the “food lounge” which was the only area in the giant place with anywhere to sit. And we went to this right after the Vegan festival so I was exhausted. (I wanted to finish some of my DIY’s to review before posting this, thus it being out of order.) There was tons of cool things to look at but all I wanted to do was take a seat somewhere and have a snack. But that was impossible in the small food vendor section where all the tables were packed. I didn’t want to wait in any more lines so we didn’t stay there very long.
giant paper flowers by Sinna paper art that everyone was taking pictures with
I loved this business card that was see through
My friend bought a couple of these cups for a friend as their wedding gift
cute handmade dog house
There was plenty to look at from stationary, ceramics, art, fashion, tools and probably my favorite: DIY kits.
I decided to pick up an embroidery kit from Yvonnemorgun. I’d never seen embroidery before that added a 3D element to it with flowers and thought they were a gorgeous way to dip my toes in. Plus all the instructions are on youtube.  They are 100% in Korean but pretty easy to follow along.
Tumblr media
Almost everything I needed was included in the kit. There was plenty of yarn, two different size needles, 4 pink flowers, 4 pearl beads, twine, fishing wire and of course the hoop with a clear cloth through it so that I could immediately get to work and follow the pre-drawn pattern.
Tumblr media
At first I couldn’t find the pearls but wasn’t too disappointed. However when I was finishing up I found them taped in a folded corner of the plastic which I thought was very smart since there’s a good chance when I dumped everything out I would’ve lost them. The only things not included that you need is glue and scissors.
Tumblr media
The glue is to seal the back of the leaves and to hide the ends. The scissors is necessary to cut the string and the thread and to cut off the leftover fabric. After I watched the video doing the leaves wasn’t too difficult to figure out how to do. It was kinda fun. My biggest difficulty was making sure I had the correct amount of thread and not accidentally getting extra fabric caught in my needle. (Of course beyond trying to get thread through the eye of a needle.)
Tumblr media
My finished project!
I’m pretty proud of myself. I didn’t have any glue to hide the end threads but despite that for my first completed embroidery project I’m quite happy.
Tumblr media
My second DIY I got that I was pretty excited about was from i.art.the.world which makes a combination of two of my favorite things: paper art and travel.  These kits do require a bit more work but you end up with a beautiful unique travel card to send people.  I bought two: Seoul and Kyoto.
Tumblr media
The process to make them is on the back of the kit but all in Korean. However there is an instruction video with English subtitles which can be found here. (She also gave me a paper in English with all the instructions.) It’s pretty easy to follow but you do need a couple things not included in the kit: an Xacto knife (utility knife), glue and something to flatten paper like a bone folder.
Once it’s put together it’s really beautiful and gives off so much more than a traditional postcard does.  It reminded me of my bookmaking classes in college and I loved it.
Tumblr media
However you have to be very careful while cutting since there are small parts that you may accidentally cut off. It’s not easy. Hours after cutting everything with my Xacto knife my index finger is still a bit sore. But it’s another project I’m happy with the result.
Tumblr media
I have only completed one of them at the moment, but they’re so pretty.  Other things I bought weren’t DIY kits. I bought two pins from Ongo. These two pins are based off of Korean folklore. First is Haetae is a folklore creature of protection (against natural disaster and fire). This creature is a lion with a horn. Because it’s a creature of protection it can be found around a lot of buildings and you’ll see plenty of statues of them in Korea.
Tumblr media
The other was a Kirin which has the body of a deer, an ox tail and horse hooves. It is considered one of the divine creatures and can be found among royal and Buddhist art.
I also bought a candle from candlehaeyum which were quite beautiful with flowers or  leaves stuck throughout the edges. I picked out a lavender candle which smells quite nice and thankfully burns straight down the center so I’m not as concerned as I first was when I lit it that I’d accidentally burn the leaves sticking out.
Overall I had a really good time at the International Handmade Fair. The international section was quite small but it was fun to see all the things people are creating and passionate about. Another interesting thing, was on the way out there was a recreation of a Pyongyang Supermarket.  Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea, so it was very interesting to see.
Big thanks to my friends for taking pictures for me again. My camera is okay at the moment (thus the DIY project photos) but it refused to work that day.

I’m going to have to come up with a name for this project sometime.
Costume design portfolio expansion, part 2
Tumblr media
Sorry for not adjusting the levels on this one yet.
The character of Newbie’s at her first lolita meetup. She’s done her research, so she’s not showing up in the Milanoo Lace Monster of the Week, but a lot of her pieces are not incorrect for lolita (usually), but they’re usually constructed by someone who either didn’t intend them for lolita (found offbrand pieces), or constructed by someone who hadn’t ever actually picked up and held actual lolita garments. Basically, there’s 30 ways to make a puffed cutsew sleeve, lolita brands use three of them, and none of them are what Newbie’s cutsew has. She’s also got some things that aren’t mistakes, but are often elements of someone’s coords they did right before getting into lolita, and that are elements that they phase out of their coords as they grow a larger wardrobe.
It would have been fun and been kind of easy to just make her super ita to the max, but I wanted to more represent where the DIY, handmade, offbrand lolita often starts out, finding and making things that seem pretty close to what we’ve seen as acceptable, but not having actually been around enough premade lolita to know all the little details.
So, she’s got a handmade petticoat, 2-tier skirt, a cutsew, and a nice rectangle headdress, all of which will get patterned. Other items not patterned include foottless lace tights and those cheap lace gloves that all of us have probably bought at some point.
I’m still working on this design, and I might swap out her shirt for something else.
For you new to the party, I’m doing a lolita themed portfolio piece, and I’m posting it here because otherwise I’ll lose motivation and never get it done. Finished project will be complete scaled-down patterns for every item the four characters are wearing, some fun renderings, a full-scale pattern of one costume, and the costume completed and rigged for a fight scene. The current plot is that four lolitas have to hide from the mob in an RV for a few days. Any input on what the plot should be or what the characters should wear is totally open.

Choosing a rune set: A beginner's guide
Tumblr media
Posted by Michelle Gruben on May 11, 2017
Thinking about taking up the runes? Mastery of the runes can take many years, but it is not difficult for a beginner to learn the basics. (Much as young children can quickly learn their ABCs.) The first learning tool you’ll need is a rune set of your own, to begin familiarising yourself with this ancient system of knowledge.
I didn’t realise that they were made out of fragile sedimentary rock.
Antler runes would be a marvellous choice for a rune-reader who connects with Stag energy.
One of my favourite artisans makes rune sets from fragments of pottery that have washed ashore in her coastal town—they are unique and colourful runes of Earth and sea!
Tumblr media
Glass runes and pewter runes are speciality items that are hard to find.
If getting the reversed meaning is important to you, get an asymmetrical set and memorise the orientation.
Choosing your first rune set can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Pick a set you're drawn to, learn the symbols, and begin using the power of the runes to transform your life and magick!

10 Small Yet Impactful DIY Decorating Changes for Smaller Budgets
We’re clearly all about DIY and home interior upgrades here. When we work with clients directly or advise our DIY students and customers, budgets vary highly. Some people are working on higher-tier renovations, and some live in rentals that they are just trying to make feel more like home. For those living in rental spaces, completing home improvements might be limited to changing up furniture paint colors and adding exciting new throw pillows as accents, versus being able to re-paint cabinets or front doors for home-owners. But trust us, as we’re current renters ourselves, there are tons of upgrades that one can do that are accessible price-wise and mobility-wise.
Here are some ideas we’ve put together for anyone on a smaller budget or living in a non-permanent space, which are all are under $200 for the average price range involved:
1) Paint your furniture to elevate your space, to make various styles feel more cohesive, and to just plain-old change up your scheme. ($45-$198, not necessarily including the furniture itself— this depends on whether you’ve owned it already or not.)
Whether you’re on a budget, have a varied collection of hand-me-down and thrifted furniture, or just love hunting older furniture with good bones, you CAN make your pieces feel updated and/or more cohesive. It’s great that these days we can find decent furniture in lower-cost ranges, including free (heck yes curb-side finds!).
images from Annie Sloan (left and center), and Farrow & Ball® (right)
With Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan, there is little to no prep involved to get your furniture ready for painting other than cleaning them well. The bonus is this paint can be worked with indoors due to non-toxic properties and no to ultra-low VOCs, so it’s especially great for those of us who don’t have a garage or outdoor space to work in. Plus you can paint over basically any material (wood, plastic, you name it) and re-create any technique and look that you see.
Follow our FAQ guide on working with Chalk Paint® (the one and only!).

2) Create removable decoupaged drawer liners for kitchen, bathroom, or other cabinets for a secret pop ($25-$68)
Many rental situations come with less than ideal kitchen cupboard and drawer interiors, like old peeling liners and gunked up stains. Such is life. However, drawer liners are a classic fix to this situation! What’s fun is that you can create temporary drawer liners that have a bit more design pop to them these days. First find some cardboard (a great way to recycle, you can find free boxes off sites such as Craigslist) and cut pieces into the dimensions of your drawers. Then decoupage your favorite wrapping paper, napkins, wallpaper, or even fancier handmade papers such as from Paper Source to the cardboard. Then you can insert them into the bottom of the drawers once dried. If you move out, you could even reuse them in your new kitchen or bathroom if the dimensions are the same (or cut them down in size).
Don’t forget to smooth bubbles in the paper out as you go, and to finish the paper with your decoupage medium or even a more water-repellent medium in case the liners need to be gently cleaned.

3) Add metallic gilding wax to the trims of collected frames for a gallery wall. ($11- $40)
Gallery walls have been in style for a while, and for good reason— they do serve multiple functional purposes. Large-scale artworks can be pricey, and so a gallery wall creates a large-scale scheme made up of multiple smaller parts; and a gallery wall is the perfect way to display your collection of cards, photos, prints, and more, to fit any style. A budget-friendly way to do this is by collecting frames from thrift stores and yard sales first, and then alter the frames (if desired) to be more cohesive together— because, let’s face it, if you’re collecting multiple frames from all over the place, their designs probably won’t match (although that could be a style unto itself, but that’s another story). Making them all the same color or appear to be the same material can be done in a glam way with GILDING WAXES.
Gilding waxes are magical. Choose from a few different shades, and simply apply the wax over your frame material. Hang the frames once dried. Check out this great guide from Apartment Therapy on how to decorate your gallery wall. You can rearrange your frames anytime, including if you move.

4) If you rent and have a landlord that is very encouraged by you making tenant improvements or will do rental reimbursement after ‘improvements,’ inquire about painting a bathroom vanity, or even an accent wall. ($70-$150)
Not all landlords do this, but if you’ve lucked out, use tenant improvements to your advantage. Take on smaller-scale improvements first, such as painting a bathroom vanity or painting an accent wall, and see where that takes you. Some landlords or agencies might have you re-paint a wall back to their choice color upon moving out, but if it’s still a worthwhile project for you and your space, this can work wonders! And if you own your home, this is a more budget friendly way to start repainting your interior.
Check out these lovely inspiration photos with projects done in Farrow & Ball Paints. A gallon of F&B paint typically covers way more than other premium paints out there, has more color depth, and literally cannot be matched at other paint stores. They are also no to ultra-low VOC and non-toxic in formula, so F&B paints are ideal for any home, especially for smaller spaces and rentals. For walls, check out the dead-flat Estate Emulsion for low-traffic walls, and matte Modern Emulsion for high-traffic walls like in kitchens, entryways, and bathrooms.

5) Update and/or add fabric items, including painting upholstery and dying or stenciling fabric with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. ($15-$150, not necessarily including the cost of the furniture or decor items themselves— this depends on whether you’ve owned them already or not.)
Add curtains for privacy and decorative effect! Add a cool stenciled pattern to revive that old jute rug of yours! Dye or stencil inexpensive pillow covers! Working with Chalk Paint® has benefits that we’ve addressed many times in this blog, but who knew you could also paint and dye fabric with it? You absolutely can. Read this simple-step blog from Annie Sloan herself on dying lace curtains to look chic as ever (you know, ones that you can find at every single flea market, yard sale, and thrift store).
images from Annie Sloan
You can even recreate painted upholstery on worn out chairs with fabrics from linen to leather (just know that this isn’t necessarily a project suited for every single upholstered piece, but chat with your local Annie Sloan stockist like us for the best advice). Hometalk has a great before and after blog post on painted upholstery with Annie Sloan.

6) If you have a patio, balcony, or yard space, paint all the various styles of collected plant pots into a cohesive color collection with Chalk Paint® . ($25-$50, not necessarily including the cost of pots themselves— this depends on whether you’ve owned them already or not.)
We’ve collected so many pots over the years with various patterns, colors, and materials. Some were found for free at the curb, and some were acquired in other inexpensive ways (don’t get us wrong, you can certainly splurge on a new pot from the hardware store or your favorite ceramicist). However if you want to tie them all together, a great way to do so is paint them all in one color for a seamless look, or mix and match complimentary colors and patterns with paint.
Chalk Paint® , again the solution for almost everything, can be used outdoors. On porous pots, you don’t even need to seal them since heat and sun will bake the clay of the paint into the pores. We enjoyed this post by blogger Nicolette Tabram on her pot-painting journey, and you should read it too.
image from Nicolette Tabram
7) Change the hardware on one or a few of your furniture pieces or cabinets. ($15-$85)
This is perhaps one of the smallest yet most impactful changes one can make without changing the finish on furniture and cabinets themselves. If you rent, keep and store the old knobs and pulls and just change them back when you move out! We here at Silk & Sage especially love the unique knobs and pulls from Anthropologie, however there are plenty of fun and budget-friendly hardware sources out there.
BONUS IDEA: change out a light fixture if you feel daring enough (and ditto, reinstall the old fixture when and if you move out).
image from Anthropologie
8) Lovingly placed plants work wonders. ($0-$75)
Choose plants that work with the amount of sunlight you receive as well as your lifestyle. Seriously, doing so will not only change your space but will also elevate your mood. If you have a green thumb, you don’t have to buy new— just watch for plant sales and browse Craigslist including their ‘free’ section, because people often let go of plants that they think are dead but have plenty of life leftover once revived with patience. Don’t forget to choose pet-friendly plant options too! Check out Apartment Therapy’s Indoor Plant Finder Guide and Guide to Indoor Plants for Small Apartments.
image from POPSUGAR.
9) Add more storage space wherever you can with good-looking DIY shelving. ($15-$65)
This is a perfect change or addition on a couple fronts: shelving adds character to your space as a design element while offering nooks for your other decor items (picture frames, crystals, books), and shelving adds more practical organization and storage for limited areas such as small kitchens.
First measure the space where you want the added shelving to gauge the best dimensions for the shelving itself. Then cut a wood board (or multiples as needed) to the correct size— most hardware stores or lumber warehouses will do this for you for no to low added cost. Then either paint, stain, or oil the shelves to fit your design scheme. Attach to the walls sturdily by resting the shelving on cool brackets (we love these from Anthropologie) or making hanging rope ties. Don’t forget your level, measuring tape, and screw anchors!
images from Anthropologie (left) and Annie Sloan (right)
10) Add a mirror to a smaller space to open it up— a tried and true solution! ($15-$195)
Home owners and renters have incorporated mirrors into their style scheme for almost any reason (do you really need an excuse?), and when used correctly, a mirror can open up smaller rooms and spaces. Just pick and choose your favorite style per your budget— and if you need to change up a thrifted or outdated mirror frame, just paint it or use metallic gilding waxes.
Isn’t this mirror from West Elm just dreamy?
image from West Elm
These are just ten of many possible changes that can make your space feel more personal, no matter if you are renting or can’t expand yet on all the changes you want to make in your home right away. Some of these price ranges may vary due to the depth of your project, what kind of painting techniques you may do, etc. Also, please note that we are not affiliated with the links, retailers, and blogs provided other than with Annie Sloan and Farrow & Ball. The other links, retailers, and blogs are just some that we have been inspired by and felt we should share with you too!
