15 Question Tag Game | OC Edition
Cheers for tagging me @queer-cosette - I don't have many OC's tbh (Shea is the only one I can think of that's named, and he's a Sidhe so some of these qestions wouldn't apply), so you'll have to do with one from my oft-mentioned but never shared NaNoWriMo from last year.
Said OC is named Simon Trevethick, a "Weaver" who has had a rather unfortunate past (which both is and isn't his fault - at the same time, for the same reason) and he is the deuteragonist of the story and the mentor of the protagonist.
Rules: answer the questions below as yourself and/or your OC. (I'd also add that you make your own post).
Are they named after anyone? Not really. The surname is mutated a bit from someone I knew at school, but is otherwise just plucked from the ether.
When was the last time they cried? That depends on whether you're asking him or not. According to him, it would be the day that he and his husband separated, about seven years prior to the start of the story; in actuality, it was much more recent, only a couple of days before he's introduced.
Do they have kids? Simon and his partner had adopted two kids, a girl and a boy named Olivia and Jack. It's a fairly major plot point as to why he no longer has them, and should I ever be able to pluck up enough courage to edit it and post it I don't want to spoil it by explaining why now; suffice to say I fridged them as part of a time paradox.
Do they use sarcasm? Sparingly, but he's rather biting with it when he does use it. He's a rather depressed man, for reasons, and tends to shun most social interactions anyway.
What’s the first thing they notice about people It's really how curious people are. In his line of work, you wouldn't even get to meet him unless you had the setting's gift, and he's a researcher of sorts into it. He likes to see if people take notice about the weirdness around them, and what exactly they focus on.
What’s their eye colour? Very dark brown. Simon's eyes are rather thin and hooded as well, so the pupil and iris take up a lot of the space that you can see, and makes the eyes look almost black.
Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings. The poor boy suffers enough with his day job and a rather sad past to want to watch horror.
Any special talents? Simon is a Weaver, which is essentially a magic user in modern times - technically he's manipulating the fundamentals of reality, but we'll go with magic. He's also a nifty sword fighter (again, "job" related).
Where were they born? Like me, he was born in Portsmouth and so has a special connection to the place. He's a bit older than I am though, having been born in 1976.
What are their hobbies? Simon lives an almost monastic life (by choice), and doesn't really do anything outside of his day job to be honest. The only hobby he really has other than that is rock shaping, but that's mainly to keep him in practice for his research. He does do recreational maths, but even he knows that's rather geeky and keeps that to himself.
Do they have any pets? He and his husband had a dog (a Springer Spaniel named Irene) when they were married, but Simon made sure his partner took it when they separated; unfortunately Irene had passed away before the story started.
What sports do they play/have they played? Simon used to play Rugby at school, and also fenced/sword-fought with his co-workers regularly until he retreated into his work.
How tall are they? 5'7" - He's a short king
Favourite subject in school? Maths. He's always liked now neat and predictable maths is, and the man finds solace in numbers where he can't in people as an adult.
Dream job? He has his dream job now, being a Weaver, but if he wasn't one he'd most likely want to be some kind of accountant or computer programmer.

what did I learn?
Two years have come and gone and I would like to think that I have learned new practices, new approaches and made enough mistakes to know right from wrong as a designer.
Even now as the year draws to an end I keep looking back at events, conversations, movements and structure of the programme to draw substance. This constant regression through time is fuelled with the question why. Why did Clint introduce us to technology through sound, more specifically through the transformation of mechanical pressure to electrical pressure? why did Ricardo find it so important to develop our listening abilities? why are the first year students focused on movement? Why is Miranda so interested in the philosophy of post humanism? Why was Antonin so interested in sound and architecture? Why is Laurent asking me to define a mathematical point through practice? What led to the integration art, design, communication studies, computing, mathematics and engineering in 2005 at AUT?
Although I am never able to answer these questions for my self I continue to question them. This has led me to realise that what I achieved this semester is a manifesto of what was happening around me, as I listened, observed and walked around the freeze frames of two years of my life.
but what did I learn, What did I learn.
1. I learnt how to develop heuristics when faced with complexity.
I was able to develop flexible interdisciplinary approaches within rigid time constraints and as a result I was able to deliver at an industry level every time.
2. I learnt how to approach opportunities and how to nurture professional relationships.
I was able to generate prototypes which demonstrated both WHY and how my ideas worked. The duplicity of why and how an idea worked would go on to create trust at a professional level with my industry partner. This relationship with industry would go on to materialise as the sound sky vehicle which carried both my personal creative interests, my academic purposes and a future business model for the industries of sports recreation centres and creative audio interfaces.
3. I learnt about my self and what it is that I want to do, and what I want to become.
I was able to develop personal strengths, learn new skills and elevate my understanding around applied electricity, user experiences and user interfaces. As a result I created something which would challenge my purpose. What do I want to be? Do I want to be a product designer? Do I want to be a music producer? Do I want to be a technician/installation based artist? Do I want to commercialise Sound Sky? Do I want to return to wearable arts? Do I want to become immersed again in maths and theoretical physics?
I don't know.I will have to fall into the unknown with even greater force.
What would I do differently?
Start the poster and statements on the first day of semester. That will make a big difference next year.

#GHC17: Grace Hopper Conference Entry @Stemettes
Stage 1:
For stage one we would like you to engage with friends, family, teachers, peers, Sherpas, mentors etc - otherwise known as your network.
We want you to promote STEM and encourage more girls to explore the amazing possibilities of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - like you are.
We live in a digital age, surrounded by technology. It’s everywhere- in our homes, on our desks... under our pillows at 3 am after a netflix binge of a 3 season long show when we know we have a 9am class the next day. Something I’m interested in finding more about is computer science- that’s my STEM pathway. I found out about computer science by myself. I grew up in an all-girls school, and I was not lucky enough to be exposed to the amazing world that is STEM. I didn’t know much about engineering, at all- in fact when I thought of an engineer the first thing that came to mind looked a little like this:
Now this image may be true of some, but it isn’t the case for all. I didn’t know of the amazing network and community of women and girls my age because there was no spreading of STEM. Being in a mix-gendered sixth form connected to an all-girls lower school, I decided to share STEM in a fun way!
In light of international Women in Engineering Day, I created a presentation to share to year 10 students in hopes of inspiring them to find out more about STEM and giving them confidence to try hard in STEM subjects! The positive feedback I received from teachers and most importantly the students gave me an even greater push to spread STEM. Slides from the presentation are as below :)











Sharing the world of STEM is something I am really passionate about. As someone who was never introduced to the world of STEM growing up at school, I feel a need and responsibility to send this message to young girls.
I also created some posters around the sixth form as well as the lower school, about STEM-y things to do in the summer!

a) Why do you think it is important that companies like Deutsche Bank and Stemettes give girls the opportunity to attend a conference like the Grace Hopper Celebration?
“The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is the world's largest gathering of women technologists.”
Being one of the four in my old college’s computer science class, and being the only student interested in pursuing computer science@uni in my sixth form, there are not many opportunities for students like me in my school. Computer science is a subject that is not taught in most school curriculum- for example, my school does not offer it as an A-level.
"In secondary school less emphasis is placed on developing girls’ computer science skills as compared to boys.”
This is the case for many girls interested in STEM.
Another key factor which companies like those mentioned above should give girls the opportunity to attend conferences like #GHC is the fact that many girls do not have STEM role models that they can see and speak to in person. In many instances, schools do not have the funding nor resources to take students to meet inspirational women in STEM; there also aren’t many women in STEM coming into schools to speak about their roles. A conference like #GHC is an encouraging, inspiring, enriching event where WOMEN are the MAJORITY- something which students almost never get to see.

I think involvement is key in impacting young girls the most. This event is not an easily accessible event as it is across the pond and quite expensive for those who are interested. I would not be able to fund a ticket myself, however with companies like Deutsche bank and Stemettes providing a platform for young women to gain even more inspiration and long-term skills, it is possible!
b) What will your contribution to the Grace Hopper Celebration be?
I hope to use my improved communication skills and the new networking skills I’ve gained to expand my network and not only meet&bond with other amazing women in STEM, but with recruiters and companies at the conference. Aside from spreading the event through the means mentioned below, I hope to document everything I learn and apply them to help my journey into Computer Science.
c) If you get a ticket to Grace Hopper 2017, how will you share your experience when you’re back in UK?
The first medium I will use is this blog here, as I follow and interact with a HUUGE network of women and girls in STEM, specifically technology. I hope to make a blog entry about my experience and skills, insight and inspo gained, as well as share photographs. I will also hope to write on our school blog/website, to reach out to the young students and inspire them to sign up.
If I’m selected, I will speak about my journey on STS and the GHC celebration.. I will also spread the message by designing posters which I hope to share around the school, as I am a visual person and enjoy designing and creating projects.
As I am a big user of social media I hope to share my experience through this. I will live tweet (@tahannisays) #GHC17 about my experience at the conference and once it is over :) #GHC17.

Safe Nomad (7). Anthony Galli, USA. “Failure is not an option.”
It is very unlikely for someone aged 26 to have such thing as a “biography”. And by that I don’t mean the timeline of being born, going to school, getting a job, and partying in Ibiza or Cancun once. No. I mean it in the sense of “a life story worth telling”. Anthony Galli does have such a story and at the time of my writing this piece – some two months after I met him in Siem Reap, Cambodia – his story is still probably evolving at the same breakneck speed as always.
He was a bad student in primary school. Then he developed an attraction for history and language, two subjects in which he excelled during high school. Then he went to study Political Science. Worked for a state senator, and also a state assemblyman and at the age of 21 he even ran for local office.
Right after University, he bought an RV (Recreation Vehicle or camper van) and spent the next couple of years like a hobo, roaming across the US while making money out of temporary jobs and poker tournaments. He used this time to learn coding so he could develop an online app he had in mind. (We will get back to that later.)
When he reached the bottom of his pocket, he devised a bold plan: he would sell his vehicle and move to Asia, where the lower cost of living would give him a “longer runway” to take his project off the ground. He did as planned and for the last few months has lived, learned and worked in Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (he moved to Ho Chi Minh just a few days ago).
Around the grapevines of Angkor Hub, the adorable and welcoming co-working space in Siem Reap, the rumor had it that Anthony would one day become a great personality of American politics. And while some may see this as over the top, one should not judge Anthony’s future by his young age or elephant-print pants; he’s got what it takes to follow the footsteps of his favorite American heroes Jefferson and Lincoln. He’s got the will, the knowledge, and – last but not least – the looks.
If this prophecy is ever proven right and this young man is a Governor, Secretary of State or even The President of the United States, remember where you saw him first: this blog.
“Bad boy Anthony”
Anthony was a bad student and a troublemaker during his early years and not because he did not want to study, but because nothing was motivating him enough to do so.
“If I’m passionate about something, I will put all my energy into it. But in primary school I found nothing attractive enough to be worth the effort. Just later, in high school, I discovered history and was amazed by the biographies of great historical figures. Even then, I was a top student in History and English and bottom of the class in Math and Science. That’s how I am: either fully committed or not giving a damn.”
His high grades eased his entry to the Political Science Department at the Binghamton University in upstate New York. Then one day he had this idea about a productivity app that could empower people to get the most out of their lives. He took it to some programmer friends, proposing that they split the ownership and profits evenly. They turned him down.
“They said they had better offers from the likes of Google or Facebook and they wouldn’t split 50-50 with me on an idea which they would work alone on, since I did not know anything about programming. I heard that a lot – that my idea was worthless and that the execution was everything.”
Passionate about his idea, he joined a tech club to learn how to code and develop the app by himself. George Washington would have done the same.
Live to Challenge
Anthony’s online app, called Live to Challenge, is a habit and goal tracker. Users create habits and goals and track them to completion. It’s also a social platform where one can set goals together with friends and helps people achieve more in life than they would do otherwise.
“Besides history and politics, I was passionate about self-improvement books and blogs. I’ve found all the information really helpful, but I felt that there was no good app out there to help implement the advice. You read, you say wow, this is great, I’m gonna do it, then you completely forget about it.
I think the more people use my app the better they will become so I want as many people as possible to sign up for it. Once the app gets bigger I can turn it into a business with real employees, I would like to build it into a big tech business to help as many people as possible to build a life around it.
I am willing to give everything it takes to make this successful because there comes a time when you have invested so much in something that failure is not an option.”
Anthony’s life philosophy: how to be hugely successful in the future.
“In today’s economy everything is about skills. People in their 20s should focus on developing their skills. Many millennials were like once I finish college I am going for the best paying job.
This best paying job could be a bartender, for example, because you make good money in tips. That’s a good job if you’re twenty-something, but how are you going to position yourself through your 40s and 50s?
I followed a different strategy; I worked less so I could learn more and therefore better position myself to be hugely successful in the future.
What I do now is a stepping stone, part of my guiding philosophy which is all about empowering the individual, specifically empowering people to live better lives.”
How technology unleashes creativity
“We had an industrial revolution that turned people from using their muscles to using their bodies as a whole and now we turn to an economy focused on using the mind. Everything is going to be more creative in nature; whatever idea you have, the technology offers the possibility to make it a reality. Creativity will be highly encouraged and empowered.
Technology allows me to turn my vision into reality, I can focus more on my vision than selling it as I would have had to 10 years ago. Nowadays I can do a lot more by myself.
Technology has always given a lot of people freedom and will continue to do so because now freeing the mind is possible in ways never seen before.”
Doing his thing, feeling protected
“I don’t recommend the digital nomad lifestyle to everyone because it’s risky living abroad on savings to build a business.
In my case, my desire for success is greater than my fear of failure.
Some want security from work and derive their meaning from other pursuits, like family, recreation, hobbies, church or philanthropy. That’s more of a working to live philosophy.
I live to work. I spend most of my time working, but it’s out of passion and dedication and it makes me feel good. I know my work has a lot of meaning. When I wake up in the morning I’m more like I can’t wait to work! There is excitement, there is something I have in mind and I want it accomplished. I feel my best when I know I’ve accomplished something. Every day I’m looking to accomplish something and if I don’t, I feel like I’ve failed.
Life is not about living quietly by the beach. For me, as crazy as it sounds, life is about making the world better because you were here.”
