sometimes i think about how the beta kids all made silly little tunes together and how they all were pretty talented musicians for 13 year olds and how we never see them play their instruments again after they enter the medium except for johns land quest

so my music loving heart likes to think about the 4 of them finding their love of music again on earth c

john plays the piano again for the first time since playing that giant organ. he takes the longest to pick his instrument back up because it reminds him of dad but he does eventually with some encouragement from his friends. he learns jane also plays (the only alpha kid who canonically plays an instrument, another loss for me orz) and they play together sometimes. jane also hadn't touched a piano post sburb and relearning together brings them closer

rose picks up her violin again hesitantly. it brings back bittersweet nostalgia for her as well but she misses playing enough to prioritize the sweet over the bitter. kanaya loves listening to rose play, partly because the sound is nice but also because she sees how at peace rose seems when she's playing and feels that happiness herself

dave struggles to separate his genuine love of music from his younger selfs irony poisoning when he opens his music making software for the first time in years. he still likes the idea of making stupid shit with his friends but also wants to make things that are ynow like. sincere and shit. so he does both. i imagine he makes that kind of parody rap that's both incredibly stupid but it works a little too well yknow? and then he continues collaborating with his friends making sincere pieces of music that actually slap pretty hard

and miss jade. the one who picks her instrument back up the quickest. her bass got destroyed in the frog temple so she was chomping at the bit to finally get her hands on a new one as soon as she was settled in earth c. it was weird to relearn everything on a new, different instrument but she did enjoy the challenge, despite missing the familiarity. i can see jade asking her friends for songs with cool bass riffs she doesn't know just learn them

they recontexualize these instruments to fit their lives now rather than let them represent something they collectively lost. the four of them learn to compose new songs both separately and together. they never became god like at or anything but they have a lot of fun together and thats all that matters

they might even inspire some of their friends to want to play an instrument 👀

i had a really weird interaction on youtube the other week. i commented on a short tv clip of someone gay doing something funny a few years ago and i said smth sweet and generic like “oh wow that’s cute i love him” and it became a top comment so sometimes i still get notifications of ppl liking or replying to it. 

but for some reason, you know how faceless people on the internet will say their most shallow and judgmental thoughts to a real person like it’s not the rudest thing you can do? yeah that happened. i had left the most impersonal, inoffensive comment in the world but someone responded to me “just admit you’re only entertained bc he’s obviously gay and you project your lack of a personality onto that”

and i was just like. honestly shocked. like what? you literally don’t know me at all. i didnt even say I WAS GAY in the comment or anything about being gay it was LITERALLY just a tv clip i thought was funny and cute. but this angry homophobe who clearly just hates to see queer ppl have fun and make jokes on the internet made it *my* problem...

and like first of all i don’t do that. i don’t just identify w everyone i come across who is queer and funny and root for them for that reason alone. the only person i project my lack of personality onto is dave davies... ok... chill out that’s not what i watch jeopardy for, that’s why i listen to the kinks

you know the 4 basic defense mechanisms - fight, flight, freeze, fawn? well guess what each of them can be applied to 4/5 main charactrs for my au >:) (my main characters being sarah, thatcher, ruth, dave, and toonbriel who i have renamed as eden. i originally had jonah be a part of this cast but i decided to kill him off like in canon. he's a super cool ghost now though!) sarah is fight, dave is flight, thatcher is freeze, and ruth is fawn

sarah is fight because she is extremely stubborn and does not back down until she believes herself to be a "winner", whether she's fighting alternates or justifying why she's just so obsessed with her brother's death. she taught herself to fend for herself after mark died, even if it pushed away her loved ones. dave is flight because he tries to deny everything happening around him. he at first denied his nephew's death, then he denied sarah's growing anger issues as well has her cutting him off for a good few years. then he denied thatcher's alcohol problems, and the thing he couldn't take the most was ruth being held captive by puppet. how could someone who took so much initiative just give up and give in to something that has hurt her? he tries denying everything around him until it eventually gets to him. thatcher is freeze because he just can't think during stressful situations. during his job, he was taught to fight, but outside his job he can't think straight when faced with difficulties. he's tried fleeing with alcohol, but the urge to curl up and cry always took over him, leaving him helpless. he gives himself time to think but no way to get out of the hole he keeps digging himself into. ruth is fawn because of how she was raised. she was raised with the thinking that a woman like her shouldn't be taking as much initiative as she does. and again, her job has taught her to fight, but outside of that she simply gives in and tries pleasing others so she doesn't have to face the consequences of standing up for herself. it especially became prominent when she was held hostage by puppet. she learned to just do what he said and maybe, just maybe, he'd set her free. but the more she gives in, the more he tries to keep her in his grasp

and for context on ruth: at some point (dont know when yet bear with me) ruth gets a call from the vol 333 alternate (who i call puppet) who has now made it his entire personality to stalk, imitate, and eventually want to kill the real thatcher, and he asks if he could stay over for a few nights because he "hadn't been feeling too well." ruth gladly obliges and it turns sour real quick because overtime she realizes she's been taking care of an alternate who ends up devolving into an entity of pure rage and power-hungry tendencies that he's willing to literally overthrow gabriel. aaaaaaand it's just bad. i'm not gonna say too much on it though bc i still need to develop a few things :) just know that she does end up getting out of that situation but not without a few scars of her own to tell her story...

I think a lot of post act 5 homestuck would be a lot better if they really doubled down on dirk being a loser like how they do with a lot of the other characters. Hes a lot like eridan or vriska but for some reason a lot of his insane plans actually like, work, but by the time he gets introduced the plot is so over and done with itself that as cool and smart as the story makes him out to be he literally cant do much aside from make things more convoluted and react to stuff
