The Never Ending Project

Not unrelated that my last post came right around the time we began a search to buy a house in earnest again. That has consumed any available time for projects. Now we own this house and with home ownership comes a never ending punch list. Home projects will likely start to creep up here in addition to electronics when I resume. Right now the garage is full of boxes but someday soon it will be my workshop. Stay tuned.

1/4 Inch presents Donna Hewitt (film/ videography) — Rad Bar, Wollongong

Video Work 2017 

Donna is a vocalist, electronic music composer and instrument designer. Donna’s research has been primarily exploring mediatized performance environments and new ways of interfacing the voice with electronic media. She is the inventor of the eMic, a sensor enhanced microphone stand for electronic music performance and more recently has been creating wearable electronics for controlling both sound and lighting in performance. Her work has attracted funding from the Australia Council for the Arts, most recently with all female collective Lady Electronica. Donna has held academic positions at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Queensland University of Technology and is currently the Convenor of Music at the University of New England.

I made a physical copy and a powerpoint mock up, as I thought it would be the easiest way to order up the images and events by date. The photo album layout is quite different to this, but it was useful to have this guide to follow when putting the final book together.

INTERIM SHOW: STARTING POINT

Yesterday, I met with the peers on my course who will be curating my work for the Interim Show. I have been contemplating how I wanted to present my work, evidence of this can be found in my sketchbook and there are sketches in my studio space. I have been placed in the separate room that comes off of PS1. The curators (Laura, Sam and Kinga) have decided that I, along with 2 other students, would work really well as a bit of a collaborative installation. All of our work is fairly similar in the way that it can be turned into an installation of a living room installation (My photo album, a video piece on a TV monitor and possibly a video piece on a projector).

I am perfectly happy with the idea and it fits in so perfectly well with the presentation ideas I already had. I have been asked to consider subtly allowing Brandon’s work influence mine. Brandon is doing a video piece based around men wearing “women’s” clothes and vice versa. At this point, my photo album is merely exploring the notion of forgotten photographs but I could add a lot more context by subtly including KEY DATES of injustices against the LGBT community that were in the same timeframe as my found photographs (1950s - 1980s) - particularly events involving transgender individuals.

I thought this was a brilliant idea, particularly as I am a queer individual and have often researched around the subject area of gender equality and sexuality! I’m also going to see if I can make any extra pieces to put into the exhibition to tie it all together (i.e. a list of names of LGBT individuals involved in hate crimes) maybe in the form of something that may have been found in a traditional home. A telephone book, maybe? However, I don’t want to get too ambitious!

I am feeling REALLY excited about this and it is brilliant that I’ve received such useful feedback and ideas as a result of this group critique.
