welcome back to our digital notes series! today i'm going more into the actual note-taking process during lectures/classes. this is important, since you can swap out notebooks for a digital notebook which becomes a lot more seamless.

♡ pre-lecture prep

because being prepared changes everything:

night before setup:

review previous notes (refresh your memory!)

pre-read lecture slides

create note template

set up quick-access tools

prepare questions

charge all devices

quick-access toolbar:

highlighting shortcuts

this changed my whole study game:

(SUPER IMPORTANT) the butterfly method (my signature system):

main points in center

supporting details on left wing

examples on right wing

questions in antennae section

vocabulary in body section

connections in trail section

active engagement tricks:

use different colors for different types of information

create mini mind maps as you go

add little drawings for visual memory

insert voice memos for complex topics

flag confusing points with cute markers

leave space for post-lecture additions

because why not have both?:

hearts for memorable examples

because the real magic happens after:

add memory triggers

effective notes aren't just about capturing everything - they're about creating a resource you'll actually want to review! think of it like creating your own aesthetic textbook that speaks your language.

pro tip: don't try to make everything perfect during the lecture. focus on capturing information first, make it pretty later! i usually spend 15 minutes after each lecture prettifying my notes.

Definitely, there is a time for everything.

I was desperate not long ago, so I decided to quit all my hobbies to study really hard, or at least 4 hours a day like I did during my graduation (I graduated in IT Management). The main thing I discovered is that even if I don't get the job I want, the person I will become—someone with real knowledge of the Software Engineering process, from the bare bones to deployment—will be worth it and enjoyable to become.

Because of this, I started to perform better in interviews and made new friends on Discord servers for programming languages.

Okay, I’m not saying that everyone will be surrounded by friends by studying like this, we need a pretty time alone to accomplish many things. But the point is, the more you talk about it, the more you attract things related to it.

Last day of holiday. I am so happy about it. I really am not a sea girlie. I prefer the mountains. I am really happy to be back home and be able to study properly. I still haven't decided if on Sunday I should keep studying Medieval History or spend the day writing the second chapter of my thesis. I will have to ponder and decide...unless you guys have any suggestions ✨

August 19th, 2023 — 3/100 days of productivity

Finally catching up on some reading — I want to finish Harold the Dauntless by Sir Walter Scott so I can move on with my thesis tomorrow.

I finally got home from the holidays with my family. I already feel so much calmer now that I am back in my safe space. I have spent the day unpacking stuff and learning things about cats on Jackson Galaxy's YouTube channel, because my cat Fritz has been very stressed lately.

The highlight of the day though is that I have bought my next academic planner! It's from Pumpkin Productivity (Ruby Granger on YouTube) and I have been dreaming of getting my little dirty hands on it for years now. I finally decided to buy it for two reason: I am graduating and starting my Master's in October, so I wanted to do an investment. Since it was a bit pricy (with shipping included it ended up being over €30) I have decided to consider it a graduation gift! I can't wait to have it! And moreover, this whole thing triggered a self reflection on the passing on time which would be too long and emotional to write, so I won't do that now...maybe some day.

I did some Chinese calligraphy at home (with my cat helping), then went to the local library to do some math homework. I went to a bakery for lunch and then went home to write some physics notes.

I try to make a balance between reading the book "Kafka: The Definitive Guide - 2nd Edition," doing Confluent course lab exercises, and a little bit of Udemy projects with Kafka as well. In the middle of the week, I'm making my homepage to showcase some portfolio stuff, which is not my priority at this time, but it involves a lot of coding as well.

Feeling like I can answer any interview questions about Kafka at this point, including the fundamentals, use cases, and examples of writing a pub/sub system in Java.

It's all about studying; it magically changes you inside and out. You're the same person, in the same place, but now capable of creating really good software with refined techniques.
