What Would You Risk for a Free Election?
Tumblr media
By Shaun A. Todd
The Question We're Afraid to Answer
In Selma, they marched in their Sunday best across a bridge soaked in hate. In Iraq, they dipped their fingers in purple ink, knowing it might mark them for death. In Mississippi, they registered voters by flashlight in towns where a knock at the wrong door could be fatal. They didn't do it for attention, they did it so we could cast a ballot without fear.
The United States has grown used to democracy being easy, predictable, and routine. Voting is something we do on the way to work, between errands, or maybe not at all. But in much of the world, and in our own past, voting was never just a right. It was a risk. Now, in 2025, the risk is returning. Our democracy, once envied, is now a cautionary tale. Too many of us treat freedom like an inheritance instead of a responsibility. There are generations, sill living and long buried, who bled, marched, and defied death so that we wouldn't have to . We owe them more than apathy. We owe them action
The Cost Others Paid
Across the globe and across generations, brave people have stepped forward to claim the ballot not as a luxury, but as a lifeline:
The New Threat Isn't Always Loud
Democracy doesn't always die with tanks in the streets. Sometimes it dies in silence, in courtrooms, and in legislatures:
Gerrymandering that makes votes meaningless.
Elected officials who flirt with the idea of refusing legitimate results
A sitting president who said he didn't know if he should uphold the Constitution, and a party that shrugged in response.
This isn't a hypothetical. This is America, now.
What Are You Willing to Risk
This isn't just about policy, it's about courage. We are living in a moment where the defense of democracy no longer happens in distant lands because it's in our churches, our classrooms, our workplaces, our streets, and our homes. Would you risk an uncomfortable conversation with a loved one to explain what voter suppression is? Would you risk being labeled as "too political" to register voters at your college, your job, or your place of worship? Would you risk being misunderstood, criticized, or even threatened for the sake of ensuring someone else can cast a vote in peace?
This isn't about dramatics, it's about duty. Because someone else already risked their life so we could have the luxury of asking whether it's worth it. It's time we stop treating democracy like it's guaranteed. It isn't.
We Are the Safeguard
Democracy is not self-sustaining because it requires effort from all of us. It is not a relic protected by marble monuments or legal jargon. It is a living and fragile experiment that survives only when ordinary people care enough to act. So, if the next generation is going to inherit something better than chaos, we must become more than bystanders.
We must volunteer to be poll workers, not just to ensure elections run smoothly, but to show that truth still matters. We must donate to organizations protecting access to the ballot, not just because it’s a good cause, but because injustice feeds on the absence of resistance. We must speak up when others stay silent, even when it’s awkward, even when it’s hard. And above all else, we must vote. Not just as a civic duty, but as an act of defiance. Because if we don’t, someone else will decide for us—and for the people who can’t.
The Question That Isn't on the Ballot
So I ask again, what would you risk for a free and fair election? Would you risk your comfort, your reputation, or your silence?
This isn't an academic or rhetorical question. The answer isn't meant for the history books.
It's meant for you. Right now.
Because the fight for democracy never ended, it simply moved closer to home.
Take Action
