Monsters in the Closet: Homosexuality and the horror film - Harry M. Benshoff

This is the primer I wish I had started from in school, but I managed to leap frog right over both film studies and queer theory in undergrad and found myself scrambling to catch up on the foundations when I started doing Proper Academia later.

Theoretically speaking, I have gotten almost all of this from monster theory scholarship (and in fact I believe it was the Monster Theory Reader where I first encountered Benshoff...and possibly Halberstam, although I at least had heard of Halberstam before). But what is particularly useful in 2025 about this monograph is seeing the immediacy of the films and issues from the 70s through the 90s in contrast with the treatment of the earlier films. It helps to orient me and my lifetime within a broader scale in a way that most historical accounts haven't somehow. I remember when the Interview with a Vampire film was new, and I remember when I finally felt old enough to watch it almost a decade later, and in between those two points in time, Benshoff published this book. And now the landscape of queer horror is different enough that we have queer horror movies that aren't even preoccupied with monster theory in the way the previous century of queer horror films were...and there's every reason to fear the closet door is being slammed closed on us again.

Years ago, I dreamt a new Poison-type evolution for Eevee was announced via plushes being released of said Pokemon. I was sad when I woke up and neither the plush nor species were real, they looked like this though!! Wow!!
