Week #47: Pokemon? I guess so.

I know, I know, this isn't Warhammer related. I understand, but like I said in my previous post I'm taking some time off of Warhammer for a bit. This is hobby related so we'll just say it's fine and fits the blogs theme. Anyway, for those of you who are interested in the Pokemon TCG this is the current deck I'm running.

I was running a Gardevoir EX deck prior to this and I tested different decks on PTCGL. I only started playing the Pokemon TCG about two months ago. Gardevoir EX wasn't really doing it for me and all the decks I tested on PTCGL didn't mesh with me either. After seeing the tins in my local target I decided to get some and test out Raging Bolt EX for the first time. The deck instantly fit my playstyle completely. It was exactly what I was looking for in a deck. After playing MTG and YGO for so many years I know what decks I like, I felt dumb for not playing it sooner. I was honestly just trying to not play something super meta like usual, but that wasn't the right play. I've made it into Top 8 at locals every tournament thus far since switching over. Since my locals run late we tend to just split prizing among everyone for non-League/Cup tournaments so we can go home. However, I think it would be difficult to argue that I'm not currently one of the better players seeing as I never drop more than one game in BO1s during Swiss Rounds. I'm currently undefeated in BO3.

It's been a lot of fun meeting new people and making new friends. My wife has even joined in on the fun and we've really been enjoying the game together. We even play Pokemon TCG Pocket together ever since it dropped.

I think the Pokemon TCG community has been easily one of the best card game communities I've had the pleasure of being a part of. MTG used to be good, and we all know what the YGO community is like. It's honestly a breath of fresh air.

On Pokémon TCG Live

Despite Pokémon being one of Nintendo's prime IPs, PTCGL is not available on the Switch.

Despite being structured as a three-currency gacha, there is no way to purchase in-game currency. Instead, you have to purchase foil-wrapped packs of cards in stores, then scan the QR code packaged with the cards, in order to get more in-game currency than the game doles out to you for playing. This is a good thing, because it puts friction in the whale transaction.

It is very easy to spend as many hours as you have playing this game.

There are better uses of my time.

you know now that i've woken up a little more (because i literally opened the email from pokémon within two minutes of waking up this morning with the news) i think i have my thoughts not that ANYONE asked for them:

- the new pokémon tcg pocket game looks fun and i really like that it looks like the packs span different sets all in one which is exciting! but im just baffled as to why we have this now AND tcg live ... like i'd much rather have pokémon tcg pocket and the og PTCGO than pocket and live like ... i'd much rather we kept PTCGO over live and have pocket be the definitive mobile version because it looks more engaging than live and more fun like i really like the angle they've gone down by saying it's for on the go battles and trading when you have a free moment like THAT is perfect branding and if we had that and the standard PTCGO oh i'd be LIVING

- im ... weirdly satisfied with legends z-a? like not in a way that im expecting them to be bad or anything, bc legends arceus proved there's a STRONG formula and demand for these games and i think legends z-a will also have a similar reception - but i mean im weirdly satisfied insofar as i was really expecting unova remakes but im SO glad they're not happening yet because i really would rather wait and have them take their time (like they're doing with PLZA) with them because those original games are SO good (also see my rant about how i think they maybe shouldn't be a remake but rather another sequel here). like this makes me happy because it makes me optimistic about revisiting unova in the future, but also the fact that there seems to be TWO legends games for Z-A really makes me think we'll get a lot of closure and/or making up for the lost opportunities and potential X and Y had (the power plant, eternal flower floette, the ultimate weapon, etc) because for me personally, X and Y had such potential but i dont feel like it satisfied me in the way i hoped especially coming off games like HGSS, BW / B2W2, and being a hoenn baby (emerald for LIFE) and it kinda felt like the beginning of the end in a lot of ways (not to sound so dramatic or anything lol) i mean they weren't BAD games they really werent but they had a lot of potential that i feel PLZA can really make up for and THAT excites me!

like im ignoring most of the other mobile game stuff bc i only really play masters ex when i remember it's on my phone (i like it! i just would rather play a console game) and pokemon go, so really even though this felt like a simple direct, im really happy we didnt get a lot because it means they're learning and they're not rushing and THAT to me is the biggest win

I started playing ptcg is a little complicated because I had a lot of false starts 😂 when I was 11, I saw this dual starter deck box set with a VHS that taught you how to play and I begged my dad to get it for me. I wanted to play and checked the event locator and the nearest place was over an hour away and my parents said no and since neither my brother nor no one at school wanted to play I kinda just knew how to play with no outlet. Made random (and very bad) decks until I was 17 and that's when PTCGO came out and I started to play then. I didn't really grasp how nuanced and competitive the game could get until I caught the 2013 world championship stream by happenstance and I was hooked into playing since!

I didn't get a local scene until this last year though which is surprising but not really because the one comic and card store that's been around for decades hates the ptcg scene and then I went to law school and had to study for the bar exam and then covid hit so I was at a financial and time burden on playing locals until early 2023 when a local shop opened up for sanctioned tournaments

My first tournament then was a scarlet and violet prerelease in March 2023 and my now-ex encouraged me to go cause she knew how much I loved playing and how I wanted to try to play competitively someday so I went even though I knew no one and was so nervous.... and I won the prerelease which was a really cool confidence boost! I proceeded to play constantly in 2023 and now I have 258 championship points just from locals and 20 from Pittsburgh regionals for a top 512 placement 😭😂 So I've only been playing competitively for this year but I have many years of online playing experience

What I love most about playing ptcg is such a crazy question cause I love pretty much all of it 🤔 Like I love the ptcg community because they're all so friendly and encouraging and some of my closest friends have come from my local scene. I love the game because when you hit the right stuff during a sequence and get a crazy play off you feel like the coolest person ever 😂 I love the competitive scene because you can see your progress even after just a few months and it's so rewarding since the skill ceiling is so high

tried the pokémon tcg live app. So far they don’t have an expanded option for ranked battles, there’s not a limitless option for casual battles, you can’t trade, it keeps crashing randomly, and if you switch to a different app for more than a couple seconds it has to restart.

so overall, a worthy successor to ptcgo :3
