The Wall Street Journal just published a story on how it cost $500k to get to the Olympics in ski racing. If you’ve ever wondered how I got into snowboarding, it’s because of this exact problem but in 1979 dollars. I knew as a single parent with 4 kids, my mum would never have the money to open the doors to get to the national team no matter how good I got. So I quit and bought a snowboard. I went from Atomic team skis with team Tyrolia bindings to a piece of wood with no edges, no PTex and no bindings. It was a pretty good feeling to get 2nd in the world in halfpipe a couple or 3 years later. Learning that your ability to live your dreams is governed by how much money you have is a pretty disillusioning thing for a 15 year old to learn. With that lesson always at the back of my mind, when I owned The Snoboard Shop (the first exclusive snowboard store in the world) I always sponsored the kid without the solid financial background because I knew like me they were going to be hungrier for success because seldom was there a plan b. When I created the The Camp of Champions (& wrote the blueprint for the action sports summer camp) I ran it as close to a charity as possible to give as many people from around the world (one summer was 28 countries) the opportunity to achieve their dreams. Judging by the amount of Olympic medals COC alumni won (again) and the sheer amount of XGames & freeriding legends that came from camp, I think my way was better than creating a sport that was only for people with money. I think it’s also why when you watch an event like the Olympics, when you look at the competitors we all seem to be friends that happen to be at a contest. Because we are. Snowboarding and snowboarders are family. It’s what I love, more than the results. If you want you want your kids to have more fun, more friends and more happiness in their life, take them snowboarding.
