This video by @deadlycomics made me think about the little devices of merriment we've made throughout history.

Such beautiful little machines. They may just do one thing, but love and care was put into that. They did what they came for and the lives of millions were enriched for having experienced it.

Then the clips of Tickle-Me Elmo getting executed and trashed in creative ways was spliced in. And that reminded me:

LOVED the concept of Tickle-Me Elmo. They loved it so much, they put together a pitch to a big toy manufacturing company, practicing the delivery. They gave it their all, explaining the machinery within, its cost efficiency, the laughter. Heck, they didn't need too many lines either. It was 1996 or so, after all; digital storage space was hard to come by.

Their passion paid off, and Tickle-Me Elmo hit the shelves. I could only imagine the excitement, on the part of the designer. Finally! It may not be much, but this little toy could bring joy to so many.

It flew out of the stores at record speeds.

Eventually, though, the court of public opinion soured. Granted, anything can get grating with repetition, but this was different. I distinctly remember the gruesome dismemberment of Tickle-Me Elmo for a meme being prevalent for a while. This one with the Jet Engine, especially.

While there is a dark slapstick to it, the deadlycomics video that started this train of thought brought me a sense of both nostalgia and loss. Someone loved Tickle-Me Elmo, and someone mourned its reception later on. I hope there's someone, somewhere, who still has a Tickle-Me Elmo sitting proudly on display, despite it all.
