Here is my Art vs. Artist for 2022! With a rare photo of myself, because I really hate taking selfies, but I wanted to show one with my new glasses (not that you can see them very well.) I’m proud of the work I made this year, I just wish I’d made more stuff, as I always do. Anyway, I hope 2023 will be more productive!

Dwukąpielowy wywoływacz w typie Diafine

Dość ciekawym typem wywoływaczy są wywoływacze dwuroztworowe, a wśród nich te dwukąpielowe. Nigdy nie eksperymentowałem szczególnie dużo z wywoływaczami negatywowymi, zazwyczaj wystarczała mi klasyka w taka jak D76, xtol czy D23. Od czasu do czasu używałem również rodinal, microphen i raz ilfosol S. Wszystkie były wywoływaczami o klasycznej, jdednoroztworowej konstrukcji. Dopiero niedawno zdecydowałem się złożyć Pyrocat-HD i był to mój pierwszy wywoływacz dwuroztworowy, ale proces przeprowadzałem mieszając część A i część B z wodą w stosunku 1+1+100. Oczywiście jak większość wywoływaczy dwuroztworowych można byłoby użyć go do wywoływania dwukąpielowego - według znalezionych w internecie informacji należałoby wtedy użyć rozcieńczenia 1+10 dla części A i takiego samego dla części B. Trudniej byłoby znaleźć czasy, acz pewnie byłbym wstanie wyznaczyć je we własnym zakresie. Mimo to, nie użyłem tego wywoływacza w ten sposób. Z różnych względów jest on dość uciążliwy w używaniu, a do tego maska jaką pozostawia nie do końca mi pasuje.

Dlatego postanowiłem złożyć wywoływacz w typie Diafine. Wywoływacz ten działa wyrównawczo, daje niewielkie ziarno i dość dużą ostrość, dzięki czemu miał nadawać się również do forsowania. Mimo to myślę, że jego zastosowanie w tym zakresie jest dość ograniczone, ale nie niemożliwe. Wynika to z dość specyficznego sposobu działania, o czym niżej. Poza tym jest to dość ciekawy wywoływacz w którym w trakcie wywoływania kolejnych filmów, kiedy ubywa pierwszego roztworu, po określonym czasie należy go uzupełnić i używać dalej. W przypadku roztworu B, po ok 25 filmach wylewamy 30% roztworu i zastępujemy go świeżym. Wątpię bym osiągnął w nim aż tak duży przebieg, ale myślę, że warto złożyć wywoływacz ten z jeszcze jednego powodu - jest trwały i długo może czekać na to aż namyślę się by go użyć. Zresztą jak wiecie, lubię mieć w ciemni awaryjny wywoływacz, który mogę wykorzystać kiedy okazuje się, że inny który aktualnie mam w ciemni z jakiś względów nie nadaje się do zastosowania. W diafine filmy wywołujemy od 3 do 5 minut w roztworze A i od 3 do 5 minut w roztworze B. Przedłużenie czasu wywoływania nie ma dużego znaczenia dla efektu końcowego - kontrast zależy od tęgo jak został naświetlony negatyw. Diafine to wywoływacz pan termiczny, roztwór musi mieć temperaturę między 20 a 27ºC, zmiana temperatury nie wpływa na zmianę czasu wywoływania. Należy zwracać szczególną uwagę, na to, że roztwór A nie może zostać zanieczyszczony roztworem B!

Oryginalna receptura Diafine nie jest znana, a sam wywoływacz nie jest już produkowany. Z ulotki producenta wynika, że wywoływacz ten zawierał między innymi hydrochinon i węglan sodu. Receptury zamienne na pewno nie są identyczne z oryginalną, ale efekty jakie dają są na tyle dobre, że warto spróbować.

Receptura wd. The Darkroom Cookbook wygląda następująco:

Siarczyn sodu 35 g

Hydrochinon 6 g

Fenidon 0.2 g

Wodorosiarczyn sodu 6 g

+woda do 1000 ml

Roztwór B

Woda 750 ml

Siarczyn sodu 65 g

Borax 20 g

+woda do 1000 ml

W sprzedaży, na eBayu, znajduje się jeszcze wywoływacz Diafine substitute, którego receptura wygląda mniej więcej tak:

Niektóre z odczynników są dość drogie i trudno dostępne, ale możemy zastosować ich zamienniki:

Roztwór A

Pirosiarczyn sodu* 6 g

+woda do 1000 ml

*Pirosiarczyn sodu jest zamiennikiem wodorosiarczynu sodu 1:1

Roztwór B

Woda 750 ml

Siarczyn sodu 65 g

Boraks** 13.8 g

Wodorotlenek sodu** 2.9 g

+woda do 1000 ml

** przygotowując roztwór B należy boraks i wodorotlenek sodu rozpuścić osobno i dodać do roztworu siarczyny sodu jako roztwór. Następnie należy dopełnić całość do 1000 ml. Boraks reaguje z wodorotlenkiem sodu tworząc metaboran sodu i wodę.

Jak działa ten wywoływacz?

Jak widać po recepturach, zasadniczo w pierwszej kąpieli mamy reduktory (środki wywołujące) oraz substancje konserwujące. W drugiej kąpieli mamy głównie substancje zasadowe, których zadaniem jest aktywowanie reduktora. W ten sposób w wywoływaniu bierze udział jedynie ta część roztworu A, która „wsiąknie” w emulsję filmu i pozostanie na nim po wylaniu reszty roztworu. Dlatego pomiędzy kąpielą w roztworze A i B nie płuczemy filmu wodą. Po wlaniu roztworu B do koreksu, rozpoczyna się właściwy proces wywoływania. Dokładny przebieg procesu zależy od pH jednej i drugiej kąpieli - fenidon jest aktywny nawet przy stosunkowo niskim pH, natomiast hydrochinon potrzebuje pH znacznie wyższego. Dlatego myślę, że w przypadku pierwszego roztworu działa jedynie fenidon, który jest właściwie natychmiastowo regenerowany przez hydrochinon. Pozostała część hydrochinonu aktywowana jest dopiero w drugiej kąpieli. Ze względu na dość wysokie pH, reakcja przebiega energicznie i najprawdopodobniej pozostałe w emulsji reduktory są praktycznie całkowicie zużywane - dzięki czemu przedłużanie czasu lub zmiana temperatury nie ma większego wpływu na zmianę kontrastu wywoływanego filmu - co jest jedną z cech charakterystycznych tego wywoływacza. Na koniec warto wspomnieć, że obniżenie pH w pierwszym roztworze, oprócz tego, że obniża aktywność reduktorów, działa także korzystnie w zakresie ich trwałości - reduktory w roztworze o wysokim pH szybciej się utleniają. Nie jest może to wywoływacz, który będzie moim pierwszym wyborem, ale jest na tyle ciekawy, że warto go znać.

1. How would you explain your photography style to your audience?

I have two goals with my photography: to demonstrate that the ordinary is extraordinary and to provide emotional emptiness/stillness so there is room for the viewer too. Some of the most spiritually impactful events in my life have occurred when seeing something simple and ordinary as though with new eyes. Extraordinary things are everywhere, we just need to be reminded to look at them, without subjective judgements. In truth there is no difference between the observer and the observed, subject and object.

2. What’s your favorite film stock?

Ilford FP4+ is my favorite general purpose B&W film stock, especially when paired with Pyrocat-HD as a developer. I get highlights that go on forever. Of the available color films, I am preferring Ektar at the moment. I’m disinterested in nostalgic looking grain and poor dynamic range of some of the popular films I’ve seen lately. Those are gimmicky films for gimmicky photography. I don’t want to participate in that. There are other B&W and color films that I prefer for special situations like very long exposures or day-for-night. Since most of those have been discontinued, I keep a dragon’s hoard of film stocks in the freezer.

3. Do you have more then one film camera?

All of my cameras are film cameras: 35mm, medium format, and large format. My first camera was digital but I simply did not enjoy the process. My favorite two camera systems could not be more different from each other: I like one because it doesn’t stand between me and the subject and I like the other because it gets in the way and forces me to slow down.

4. Have you tried a light meter?

I’ve used quite a few light meters and find them indispensable. Metering is an art. The Sekonic Studio Deluxe II is my favorite incident meter. It doesn’t need batteries, is faster for me than a phone metering application, and gives me exposure data at a glance. I’ve used the Gossen Luna Pro and it is larger and heavier than the Sekonic Studio Deluxe II. The Gossen meters low light conditions better but I’ve practiced low light exposures over the years and can identify the exposure faster than any meter. I’ve used various modern and vintage spot meters too but have found they are more useful for large format B&W photography and learning how to estimate middle-gray.

5. What would you say to someone starting out film photography?

Film photography is a mature technology with finer points being lost. Talk to old timers. Find local experts & enthusiasts, even if they are many generations older, and learn from them. The rabbit hole is deep and diving into it will help you understand what you’re doing in those moments when you’re jolted out of that intuitive space and are presented with a question. This knowledge allows you to hack the format. Eventually it should be integrated and each aspect becomes as intuitive as riding a bicycle. Best of all, you can keep this knowledge alive.

6. What’s the relationship between your camera and you? Please provide a few pictures of yourself, and your camera that you enjoy using the most!

My cameras are my other eyes. I take a camera with me everywhere, if only as a reminder to be present with the world around me.

7. What’s your favorite camera brand and why? I don’t think I have a favorite brand but so do have two favorite camera systems. I’ve used a lot of camera systems and each have their pros and cons. I’ve tried multiple systems from each of these makers: Canon, Nikon, Mamiya, Leica, Rollei, and Yashica. My favorite two camera systems have been the Leica M6 Classic and any Rolleiflex. The former seems to disappear in my hands while the latter forces me to slow down. Despite these differences, they are both small and discreet with optics that are not obnoxiously clinical.
