April 22, 2023 - Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Reddish-bellied Parakeet, Maroon-bellied Conure, Reddish-bellied Conure, or Brown-eared Conure (Pyrrhura frontalis) Found in parts of Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay, these parrots live in mountain forests, lowland woodlands, and forests near rivers. They feed on seeds, especially Araucaria nuts, as well as fruits, flowers, and some insect larvae, foraging in flocks. Breeding from October to December, they nest in tree cavities, where females lay clutches of five eggs.

Hellou! I'm thinking of getting a GCC in the near future, but I've had only budgies my whole life. Can you give some tipps about typical GCC behaviour/body language/sounds that differs from budgie body language?

Hello! Sorry for the delayed response! ^^; I'll try to answer this as best I can but a complicating factor is that Spencer was raised around budgies from the time he was very young, so he may show more budgie-like behaviors than the average conure (he definitely has a version of fwibbling he does, which is EXTREMELY cute but doesn't really sound anything like a budgie, lol).

In my experience, GCCs are a LOT bolder than budgies (although Spencer was hand-raised by humans, so he may just be tamer than average). If he wants to know what you're doing, he'll fly to you and sometimes directly try to take an object from you or bite it (or you :D)--a notable example of this is if someone is brushing their teeth while Spencer is out of his cage. He will fly to the person who is brushing their teeth--even if it means he has to cross several rooms!--and land on their shoulder and start trying to bite the toothbrush. GCCs have a lot of energy like budgies, but it seems to come more in spurts. Spencer will often be extremely hyper for awhile, then fall asleep in my hand for about 15 minutes, and then wake up and resume being hyper, so he alternates between "NO LEAVE ME ALONE I AM BUSY WITH IMPORTANT BIRD STUFF" and "YOU HAVE TO CUDDLE ME RIGHT NOW OR I WILL BITE YOU" I guess all in all, GCCs are more demanding than budgies and seem to require a lot more one-on-one attention. They WILL get themselves into trouble if left unsupervised--obviously budgies CAN get themselves into trouble if left unsupervised, but they don't always. GCCs ALWAYS will, lol. They're like budgies turned up to 11.

In terms of body language, the most notable thing is probably the territorial "snake dance". If a GCC is feeling territorial or threatened or sometimes is just mad about something, they'll do this weird little wiggly dance where they shuffle side to side and wobble their head at you. If you try to pick them up at this point, they WILL lunge and bite you, and they bite MUCH harder than budgies (when Spencer bites me, I almost always end up bleeding -_- ). They also do the "shpooping" thing (i. e., bouncing rapidly up and down on their legs) when they're excited about something or interested in something, and in Spencer's case this usually means "come get me and show me what you have" (if I don't, he'll fly over and look at it for himself, lol). Another notable one is the "no don't pick me up" move--if I try to pick up Spencer when he doesn't want to be picked up, he will rest his beak against the surface he's standing on like he's lying down. In this case he won't bite if you persist in picking him up, but it's also VERY hard to get him to actually step up (you may have guessed that this usually happens when he thinks it's time for him to go to bed).

In terms of sounds, in my experience conures don't make noise as FREQUENTLY as budgies, but they can be MUCH louder when they do make noise. Unlike budgies, conures don't sing or fwibble constantly. Most of the time, Spencer is actually either completely silent, or just kind of muttering a little to himself at low volume (either muttering a weird mash-up of the words he knows, or making the sound I refer to as "beakfarts", lol). BUT his flock call is EXTREMELY loud and can be piercing--it's an extremely high-pitched "EEEE" call, almost a whistle, that he may repeat a dozen times for no apparent reason. He also has a short, sharp, loud scream that's his alarm call (usually he only does this if there's a sudden movement outside the window or something), and a call I don't really know the meaning of that kind of sounds like "EE BEE" that he does sometimes too. He has also been known to yell "HEY SPENCER" or "SPENCE SPENCER" or "HI BABY" when he's trying to get my attention (I have tried to explain to him multiple times that I don't know how to spence him, but this doesn't seem to stop him)--obviously those particular words are probably pretty unique to him, but if your GCC learns any words, be prepared for those words to get shrieked at you when your bird is bored.

October 27, 2022 - Santa Marta Parakeet (Pyrrhura viridicata) Found only in the Santa Marta Mountains of Colombia, these parrots live in and around humid forests. They eat fruits and seeds, along with some flower clusters, leaves, and lichens, foraging in small flocks of up to 20 birds. Breeding cooperatively, they nest in cavities in dead Wax Palms, and also in nest boxes, where females lay between three and seven eggs. They are classified as Endangered by the IUCN as their population is thought to be decreasing due mainly to habitat loss and fragmentation in their small range.

I'm especially fond of the way they wrote YJH and Anna Croft, and also, I have a soft spot for things where YJH (who has had to carry the enormous burden of the Story for so long) finally gets to do some reading and writing of his own.

Sangsoo, with a side of Joongdok. The misadventures of HSY (cat) and YJH (cat???). I have a special spot in my heart for this fic because cat HSY is written so hysterically well it has permanently affected my own characterization of HSY. Funny, charming, cute, but as with all things orv, has a very sweet and sad undertone.

JDJ. YJH attempts to confess. KDJ does not make things easy for him. The calling card of a great jdj confession fic is a tasteful amount of KDJ brand tomfoolery, just enough to make you want to grab him and shake him like maracas. This fic accomplishes that with flying colors. It's written from YJH's pov, but you can just feel the gears turning and steam puffing out of KDJ's head. Op understands babygirl YJH. As a warning, this is the first part of a three fic series, the other two are NSFW.

YHK. Our favorite toxic polycule, now on live tv! A truly tremendous Love Island AU fic. My absolute favorite thing about this fic is that every time a character is introduced, there's a cutaway to their Love Island Love Interest Self Introduction Sexy Beach Montage Reel written in the style of a TV film script and every last one of them had me crying real tears. YSA is also excellent in this fic.

World's End Rhapsody by wakerife

JDJ, with a side of Sangsoo. This was one of the first orv fics I read, before I started bookmarking them; there's a really sweet scene of YJH reading that I couldn't get out of my head so I went on a hunt to find this fic again by searching through every single ORV fic tagged with "post-canon." A collection of KDJ recovery snippets, punctuated by some heartfelt jdj.

At Sea by ksalientian

YHK. The dead return from the sea, including KDJ. He doesn't come back exactly how they remember. Eerie, melancholy, and permeated with slow, enormous loss. There are some horror like elements in this fic, but it's more psychological than something that might make you squeamish. Yoohan are going through it. Fantastic fic!

YHK. KDJ worries in the middle of the night about being responsible for a new story, and about being a father. Or, three idiots and baby. I love fics where yhk get their blissfully mundane happy ending, but op doesn't confuse that with forgetting the traumas and hardships of the past. Love the banter in this fic, and the way they just lean on one another without even thinking. As a warning, there are discussions of unplanned pregnancy in this.

Ain't Nobody Solving That Declining Birth Rate by dulcetair

YHK. KDJ is fresh out of a coma (broke) and YJH is a former terrorist (also broke.) The post-scenario government issues a cash incentive for people to get married. Or, the gang commits marriage fraud! Features YJH wearing a apron that says grillmaster on it. I was already a firm believer in YHK getting married for """tax benefits""" because it makes things easier for KDJ who is too embarrassed to admit anything otherwise, but the idea of HSY using Avatars to game the system and buy a three story house just for funsies is also incredibly in character.

What the Living Do by younglegends

GEN. Snapshots of mourning, loving, and longing from various KCom members' points of view. The chronological events of this fic are backwards, which makes for an interesting read. Younglegends hasn't written a lot of ORV stuff yet, but the two fics that they have so far are both downright phenomenal, and some of the best work I've seen in this community. They are also the author of the fic that I refused to spoil in the previous orv fic rec. Also, their YSA characterization is perfect.
