A sense of counterculture has always been intrinsic to New York--admittedly, at times, in fantasy. But right now, that doesn't feel true to me. Recall in Please Kill Me that all the CBGB natives say they knew the place was over when Diana Vreeland starting showing up. (Sidebar: do you think she used her lipstick to scrawl "SIMPLY DIVINE" on the bathroom mirror?) Now, Diana Vreeland—or rather, that grand, rich, out-of-touch arbiter sensibility she represents, the one that takes something underground and dilutes it for thousands of double-taps—is there from the jump. Counterculture in New York is just culture now, and the things that are supposed to make New York's culture prickle with edge have never been less interesting. Artists want to be rich and rich people are all artists, and both are on juice cleanses, influencer sultans live-tweeting on a palm-print chair between e-cig puffs. Nothing is expected to be sacred or naughty or remain a secret, because it’s meant to be discovered and gobbled up immediately by the Man, who is working in consulting, but he's wearing his Yeezy Boosts with a Quartersnacks hoodie to that weird club Pepsi owns for a party hosted by a waitress from Café Henrie, okay? Some things may wear the luster of elusive creative energy, but like Glossier lip gloss, it's all a badge, meant to be like, marketed.

Few things in life give me more joy the scrolling through the Quatersnacks site a few times a week. This site is a touchstone of skateboard knowledge and skateboard smarts. So, to be included in their round up of skateboard summer reading is a buzz that will keep me smiling long into Autumn.

Making this whole affair all the more exciting is the good company that my book is discussed with. Dani Abulwaha’s Skateboarding and Femininity, and Iain Borden’s Skateboarding and the City. 

Adam Abada does a first class job in unpacking these texts. He generously and patiently explains some of the more academic ideas and sets them in context. I’m sure Adam also has a book in him, and one that he will enhance with his superb illustrations.

As an aside my book is currently being sold at a very decent price on the Palomino, another site that deserves wide recognition and support.
