I got this yesterday and it’s definitely not Valentine’s Day today, but my stomach was acting up most of the day so sitting on tumblr took a back seat. Feeling better though, so time to answer these questions!

7. do you prefer poems or love letters? Actually, I love both, for different reasons. I have and received both too, just not in a long time sadly.

19. snow, rain, or sun? It rarely snows around here but it’s nice, up to a point. I don’t mind rain; I like it, it’s soothing (until it floods your yard but *shrug*). The sun is nice too though it gets really hot here so. So, all of them, until I say no? XD

1. Do you have a preferred genre to write? Do you like to stay within the rough directions of the genre or do you like to mix and match?

hmmmm I mean like, what would constitutes as a genre? Fluff & Angst with some mild spooky/creepy tones? Yes. Dat me. Granted like the Fluff is more often and prominent but my god do I LOOOOOVE writing some spooky/paranormal shit. UGH my jam, bread, and peanut butter toast. It just depends on my mood tbh lol

2. Are you a writer that has a plot idea and then figures out what character(s) to use for that or are you more set on writing (a) specific character(s) and come up with a plot around them?

Typically its specific characters and SOMETIMES I have plot... but more often than not I like go “I want EMOTIONS TO HAPPEN DAMN IT!!!” Plot happens sometimes... honestly I have been writing more plot as of late, but like again the characters were pre-determined because uuuh that’s why I’m writing lol. I am very much a pantser with some vague ideas of plot, but things tend to go sideways if I try to plan too much shit lol (Brain gets tricked into thinking shit is done for one... Two: its dat adhd and focusing is hard lol)

3. 1st person, 2nd, 3rd, all knowing narrator or unreliable narrator and so many more choices - do you have a clear preference? Or different ones for different kinds of writing? Do you feel a certain pov works best with a certain setting and if yes, which one?

3rd person limited with a dash of unreliable narrator. I personally cannot stand 1st person...takes me a bit to dig into 1st person lol. Funny enough when I was oooo I wanna say like pre-teen time, I would swap POVs constantly without realizing I was? I had thoughts for all the characters involved and had no idea how POV worked other than “This is what this person is thinking.” And it apparently was like...a super natural flow that a few people have commented on how they loved it? Like...huh neat!

As I’ve gotten older, its sometimes hard for me to like...not swap POVs (it also depends on what I’m trying to convey in the fic) since I’m still in that mode of wanting to reveal everything and how much thought I put into it. The uuuuuh recent fic I’m working on (Rest & Rewind) I actually found a fun way to naturally swap POVs while still keeping it limited!

Hearing the thoughts and feelings of a character is...really fun and I’m glad I sorta finally figured out how to write it cause like 3rd person POV is my go-to. The limited and unreliable narrator is fun just cause like, you’re learning as the character is learning and progressing through the story.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Yes! So I was named after a free things, one being the song "April Love" by Pat Boone, the other having April sort of after my grandmother's middle name, Mae, and my great grandma (?) Was Viola Love, so we got April Love! :)

2. When is the last time you laughed?

Oh gosh, I'm such a giggler so this is hard today, but as far as like, laughed really hard uhhhhhhh I think the other day when listening to the podcast Graphic Novel T.K. (podcast on the publishing world around graphic novels)

3. Do you have kids?

Nopeee and idk if I want any, or at least to carry a child. Probably not.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Hmmm I don't think I do that much, bc I'm bad at it xD I don't stretch it enough so people think I'm serious.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Their smile, if they do smile when I see them! I've actually gotten infatuated with a few people's smiles before.

6. What’s your eye colour?

Hazel, though they can appear more yellow or green depending on what I'm wearing.

7. Scary movies or Happy Endings?

Definitely happy endings! Gimme them happy things!!

8. Any special skills?

I *always* notice if someone got a haircut. It's like, the only real superpower I have but I'm rarely wrong (or they just styled their hair differently, which I count as right)

10. What are your hobbies?

So I super super love reading comics/manga/graphic novels and also watching anime/animated shows!! I used to knit but I don't as often anymore (bc Illustration uses my wrist a lot, I don't knit as much). hmmm oh, I collect spoons! I have like, 52+ spoons and I actually need another spoon holder for my wall since my one is full!

11. Have you any pets?

Not personally but my parents have two dogs named Saki and Willow whom I love very, very much 💜

12. What sports do you play / have played?

I played soccer back in middle school, and then in late middle school-early high school I did colorguard for a few years! :)

Art, language arts, and study hall.

15. Dream job?

Hmmmmm my dream dream is to be a comic artist and/or graphic novelist who works and collaborates with a variety of different marginalized writers/artists to create some pretty awesome works that focus on celebrating diversity! All the while being able to support myself, my partner, and my dogs I'd have and live a comfortable enough lifestyle.

1. If you could have any kind of art, what would you get?

um...I love watercolor? Its chaotic and the way the paint naturally gradulates on the paper and it reminds me a lot of uh this really wonderful program I run at work when we can have volunteers. Its called OMA or Opening Minds through Art and volunteers are paired with elders who have dementia. It lets the artists have a chance to be creative (cause in nursing homes, everything is scheduled. meds this time, meals this time. etc) and like have a choice in to paint what they wanna paint.

I have some pieces from previous art shows on my walls at home. It’s all abstract, but there are stories behind each of them. They mean a lot to me, because I know the residents who painted them and some of them I was even there for when they painted them. AND WELL I also get to play around the paints too :D Its really fun and sometimes I enjoy the heck out of the results like:

This is one I painted earlier this year as an example for the artists. I love coming up with titles haha. This one I called “Drag Racing After Midnight” just cause of the streaks of color and I was listening to ‘Quarter Past Midnight’ by Bastille a lot the night before I had painted this.

Ngl I have no idea if I answered this properly lol But like, this program means a lot to me and I miss it dearly, so I’d love to have OMA art again...

2. What’s your favorite MET gala outfit?

Um...I have no idea??? I don’t pay attention to it...but maybe the Joan D’Arc one. Because yea.

3. If you never had to worry about rules or practicality/upkeep, what kind of hair would you have?

oh gosh uh big curls with an ombre of teal and purple because dyed hair is so damn pretty.... I love curls. They’re so cute~ Istg if my hair didn’t weight so much....lots of hair too like dang. Looks good.

4. Who’d you have a celebrity crush on as a preteen? (If you’re aro/ace or didn’t have one - what band were you obsessed with?)

...I honest to god do not know celebrities and didn’t have any crushes but uuuuh was a fan of Britany Spears, N*SYNC, & Backstreet Boys when I was a preteen hahaha because dats right I’m a 90′s child.

5. Did you ever follow an embarrassing fad/trend?

No? It’s only embarrassing if you let it be. It’s okay to enjoy things that are trending. And...honestly I don’t uh pay attention to fads or trends to even register they are fads or trends.........

Wait, Homestuck would count as this wouldn’t it? EH. Ain’t embarrassed. The music slapped and I got good good friends out of it. :3

GOSH UUUUH Wicked is one of my all time faves. Elphaba and Galinda were roommates oh my god were they roommates. What is this Feeling? LOATHING (enemies to friends to best friends to enemies??? to lovers yes)

Also Matilda. The movie was my jam growing up and is one of my comfort movies. Saw the musical with my long time bestie last year (she and I had seen Wicked several times together) and let me tell you Revolting Children slaps.

I’d constantly have my nose in a book...hell I remember reading some Charles Dickens books when I was like...8 or 9? (I wanted to be like Matilda and there was a summer read-a-thon at the library for like free pizza from pizza hut...ya girl got some pizza man) ANYWAYS, in school there were these like reading tests kids had to take and only certain books were like in the system...I can’t remember how many books you had to like do in order to pass or whatever but like I DO remember not wanting “to take the easy route” and just fuckin...do a whole bunch of tests about A Series of Unfortunate Events. Cause I had already read like 8 of them and like “no mom I wanna test on different books!” wait im getting sidetracked

SO LIKE...back to my sisters. One of them doesn't comprehend written words all that well and middle sis just...doesnt find books interesting (I still think she might be a little dyslexic). Cue my mom going to me at like 7pm the night before a paper for my sister is due and asking me “So, tell me the plot of [title of book]. Your sister needs to write a paper on it.” Which boiled down to my mom and I writing said paper so my sister can keep her grades up. I was also asked like...what the answers for those reading tests were and YEAH that’s the story of how my mom used me to cheat the reading system.

Note: I’d like to mention that this chapter and Into the Woods (ch6) takes place a week after Next to Normal (ch5). This is most likely the last chapter of this arc for Ryan & the Fountain Pen, however, not the last chapter in her story. ;3c Special thanks for @allislaughter for assisting in naming this chapter.

Inkwell’s beak snapped shut. Ink dripped from his mouth. His blank eyes stared at Ryan, awaiting a response. Ryan slowly stood. She held the pen in her hand, his pen, her tool, and gestured to the room around them.

“So, where are we?” She asked.

Inkwell spread his wings. Ink splattered to the ground. “This is my domain.”

Ryan gave a blank stare. “Okay, I gathered as much, but where are we?”

Inkwell coughed and immediately brought his wings back to his side. “I am bound to the pen in your possession. As long as you hold that pen, we are connected.”

Ryan glanced at the fountain pen, then back at Inkwell. “So, if I drop this, then we’re through-yeah?”

Words around them became illegible scribbles as they warped shape. Alarm bells rang in Inkwell’s head. “Do. Not. Drop. It.” He couldn’t do this. Not again.

She twirled the pen and put it in her hoodie’s pouch. “Rodger Dodger.”

Inkwell sighed. “I know this is a lot to take in and I am positive you are bubbling with questions.”

“Speaking of questions,” she waved her arm up and down in front of her, “what are you?” Her thumb began massaging her temple. “What are those purple things I keep seeing? Who are-”

“Before you start having a meltdown: I am a spirit. The purple creatures you are seeing are shades. They are akin to me, also spirits, but the beginning stages before you see the full spectrum of colors.”

Ryan’s eyes slowly widened. “...I’m just like Cole Sear then. Oh my god, I see dead people.”

Inkwell blinked. A reference and genre savvy teen. Oh boy. “Ghosts are different than spirits-” she opened her mouth, “-And yes, you can now see both.”

She licked her lips. “You mentioned being bound to the-” she patted her pouch, “fountain pen. Are you, like a-uh genie?”

He shook his head. Ink splattered the floor. “I do not grant wishes if that is what you mean. Otherwise, some similarities yes. As you have read, I was murdered-”

“By the witch,” Ryan chimed in.

“Yes,” he clasped his wings together, “to keep myself from fading away completely, I found and bound myself to your pen. Spirits on their last legs can bind their remaining energy into objects. In order to regain our strength, we pull humans with similar energy to us, and turn their energy into our own.”

Ryan frowned. “So, you’re saying you’re feeding off of my energy, aka the stuff you’re made up of?”

He shrugged. “To put bluntly, yes. Though, humans, like yourself, naturally produce a great quantity of this energy. Most are unable to even see this range of energy.”

“Then, why am I able to see it now? Is it because you’ve been feeding and I’ve been writing with your special prison pen?”

“You have had a high concentration of being exposed to spirits.” He tapped his beak chin thoughtfully, “That or ingesting lots of citrus.”

Ryan paled. “I knew those orange milkshakes would come back to haunt me…”

“Ryan.”

“Hmmm?”

“It is not the milkshakes.”

She sighed in relief. “Good, I was worried.”

“You can already see spirits. Consuming citrus is a moot point by now.” Inkwell looked past Ryan. Words and paper were warping and wrapping into a four-legged creature behind her. “Ryan, you need to leave this forest, now.”

She tilted her head. “Wha-why?”

“You are in danger.” He said, just as the ink and paper around her shifted.

She blinked. Greens, browns, and blues were the first to welcome her back. The cracking of twigs and stomping behind her were second. Her feet started moving before coming up with a third thing to join the welcoming committee. She didn’t dare look back.

The sand creature had long since shifted from its deer form. Jess weaved through the forest, dodging branches and bushes as she sprinted. She smacked anything else out of the way with her cane. It was running too close to town. She gritted her teeth. The sandcoon hopped through the trees above. It’s light gray energy left behind a trail of wisps and grains of sand.

Jess eyes darted to her right as fire shot up, and hit, the spirit mid-air. “Lucky shot!” she called out as she sprinted to where the spirit fell. Her eyes widened and her pace quickened as a wispy human figure stood.

The spirit was on its last legs.

It flew off towards town.

A second set of footsteps came closer. She didn’t have to look to know Tristan was by her side. His lantern swung wildly in his hand. Its fire was out.

“This is bad.”

“No duh! Did you really have to shoot it?”

“I didn’t think it’d be a one-shot K.O.”

“And I didn’t think we’d be chasing a speedy sleeper spirit on a SATURDAY!”

The duo felt the concrete before they registered they were out of the forest. The spirit took a sharp right, towards the local diner on Cherry Street. Jess and Tristan fumbled into each other before sprinting after it.

The spirit didn’t go too far to tool. Which would’ve been fine, they’ve taken tooled items to Lucinda for years now. They’ve had to ‘borrow’ a couple of...hard to replace items before. It wasn’t stealing per se, and no one ever caught them taking that duck statue from the garden center. Nor the copious amount of chalk that went missing from the math department. Mr. Atticus was always dropping chalk anyways. It was a bad habit.

What they didn’t plan for was the girl about to walk into the diner to intervene between the spirit and the shovel leaning against the wall.

Jess and Tristan just about tripped over themselves trying to stop. She stared at them, eyebrow raised.

“I win!” Jess shouted, pumping her arms in the air.

The girl adjusted her frames before walking into Brenda’s Diner. Tristan watched her before turning to Jess.

“We’re dead.”

Jess lowered her arms. She swung her cane and tapped her shoulder. “I can see the headlines for Sunday’s paper: ‘Two Idiot Teens Murdered by Local Antique Owner’,” she twirled the cane in her hand like a baton before smacking it on her open palm, “Which is why we should run and tell her now before this blows up in our faces later.”

“Agreed.”

They stood on the sidewalk side-eyeing each other, waiting for the other to move. A light breeze picked up a dead leaf and carried it away.

“So…”

“So.” Tristan switched the lantern to his other hand. “Last one to Lucinda’s has to tell her about the medium we created.”

Jess was already running.

Ryan didn’t dare look back until she saw the light of civilization. The crunch and snap of twigs were replaced with smacks of feet hitting pavement. She turned towards the forest, her breathing heavy. Her signature purple sweatshirt clung to her arms. With no immediate threat breaching the forest line, she pulled the sweatshirt off and quickly tugged at her t-shirt in attempts to air it out.

She knotted the sweatshirt sleeves above her hips. Something heavy in the sweatshirt hit the back of her legs. Her eyes widened, quickly undid her work and retrieved the fountain pen from the pouch. She stuck the pen in her front pocket with her house key and wallet before retying the sweatshirt. Satisfied, she walked through the parking lot of her favorite diner and onto Cherry Street.

At first her eyes didn’t notice the minor changes, well, not until she tripped on a sleeping hamster (?). And tumbled into someone. They both fell to the ground. She sat up. “Oh sh-I’m so sorry.” The girl adjusted her square frames back in place. “Are you okay?”

Glasses girl looked annoyed and probably mad. Her face was dusted with a light shade of pink. She clicked her phone shut and held out a hand. Ryan took it. They helped each other up. Once standing Glasses took out her phone. “Careful where you’re walking or you’ll trip over air again.”

Ryan glanced down to where she tripped. A small hamster with tiny orange bat wings rubbed its head with its tiny arms. The creature, no, spirit, seemed to emit a neon orange gas. She turned her attention back to Glasses. “Gravity works a little too well today,” Ryan forced a grin.

“Well,” Glasses shrugged, “bye.” She kept walking towards the diner.

“See ya ‘round!” Ryan waved, spun on her heels, and started speed walking away. There was a flash of light on her right.

Ryan walked faster.

Her eyes caught flashes of color from her peripheral.

She walked faster until she was running. She recognized the next building on her right.

The antique store.

Ryan ran into the door and tumbled forward. It was push. The bell chimed, signalling her presence.

The shopkeeper looked up from her magazine. She placed a large card between its pages. "Yes, may I help you?"

Ryan stared at her and straightened a bit. A light shade of blue curled off the woman’s shoulders. "Why are you leaking blue?"

"I wouldn't call it a leak, dear. That implies it's a liquid." The shopkeeper closed her magazine and hopped off of her stool. "Would you like some lemonade?”

Ryan eyebrows scrunched together. “Huh?”

“You seem out of breath,” the woman clarified, “Were you chased by something?"

As if by sheer coincidence two teens crashed through the door. The bell above jingled wildly. "LUCINDA WE HAVE A PROBLEM!" The duo shouted in unision.

Ryan and the two new comings stare at each other for a moment. Ryan raised her hand slowly while the other points at Tristan and Jess. "Yeah, them."

Almost by instinct, they both pointed back at her, immediately recognizing her. “YOU!”

Tristan pulled his hand back and blinked. Dark purple energy rolled off Ryan’s shoulders. He dramatically pointed at her again. “I WAS RIGHT. I KNEW YOU WERE A SPECTRAL.”

Ryan’s eyes narrowed as she tilted her head back. “I’m a what?” Her gaze shifted to Jess. “Is he always like this?”

Jess nodded. “Like half the time.”

Lucinda waved her hand at the door. Jess scurried to the door and flipped the open card on the door to CLOSED as Lucinda slowly walked to Ryan's side. "Jess, Tristan, meet your new teammate."

The three teens stared at each other then to Lucinda. “What.”
