hiatus over hi. i wasnt the best at it, but i did develop a complex that makes me feel like maybe im an okay human.
Did i have a friend text me "we really shouldnt be friends anymore"? yeah, sure did, check it off the bucket list.
did i move a friend out of her bfs (into my own home mind you) just for her to move back in with him the next day? certainly! still get those brownie points i bet.
have I looked at my finances with gritted teeth and rejoice after cancelling my HSA? oh fuck yeah buddy.
Am I happy? weirdly more than ever. Life is a strange thing. but we've made it this far<3

Version 624
youtube
windows
zip
exe
macOS
app
linux
tar.zst
I had a great week. Duplicates auto-resolution is easier to preview, and I have re-introduced a way to 'lock' a search page in place.
This release updates several important libraries in Windows and Linux.
full changelog
new build
The Windows/Linux 'future build' test last week went well, no reports of problems. It seems like Win 10 will still run the program, although I suspect a very old (i.e. un-updated) version may have trouble. If you cannot boot the build today, please consider running from source and choosing an older version of Qt in the interactive setup: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/running_from_source.html
If you use the zip or tar.zst, it does not seem like you have to do a 'clean install', but the build releases are changing a bunch of stuff so it is a good time to do one anyway: https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/getting_started_installing.html#clean_installs
If you run from source, this is a good week to rebuild your venv. Users on python 3.13 no longer have to choose the (a)dvanced install.
locked pages
A long time ago, when you opened files 'in a new page' or from a subscription files popup, the page created would have no search controls. It would just be a static page that could hold files. It worked well as a 'scratchpad' to work on, but you could not easily search the files if you wanted to.
I replaced that mode with 'initialise the page with a system:hash predicate', which helped simplify things behind the scenes but makes it annoying to append new files or merge other pages into it, since the underlying system:hash stays stuck as what it was originally.
Today we fix this. All search pages now have a 'lock' icon button beside the tag autocomplete text input. Click this, and the current search collapses to a system:hash for the current files in view and the search interface is replaced with an unlock button. It will keep track of when you add or remove files, and if you unlock, the system:hash is of what is currently in view. Have a play with it, and you'll see how it works.
Whenever a new page is created with files--which usually means 'open in a new page' or a subscription file popup--it now starts in the locked state. The old 'no search enabled' behaviour is back, but if you want you can flip to a regular search with one click. Let me know how it goes!
auto-resolution preview
The duplicates auto-resolution 'preview' panel, when you were editing rules, was running way too slow. It could take thirty seconds to load up a count or a preview on a big client, every time you made a change. I've overhauled the whole thing to stream results in fast pieces, with pause buttons and faster cancel tech and better feedback. This system also now handles when the pair comparison takes a while to compute. It is pretty much all ready for 'A and B are visual duplicates'.
I fixed a couple more false positives in 'A or B are visual duplicates'. There's one edge-detection situation that I poured a ton of time into and still failed to catch, so I'm going to keep thinking about it. Please send in any more weird pairs you come across!
Auto-resolution rules in semi-automatic mode will now only queue up 512 items for 'ready to action'. This queue can take a while to build and resets any time you change the rules, so I'm limiting it to keep things snappy. You can change the limit or remove it entirely in the edit rule panel.
misc
Ratings look nicer and line up great again!
A bunch of number-tests across the program have new 'less than or equal to' and 'greater than or equal to' operators.
next week
I only have one week before my summer vacation week, so I'm just going to fix little stuff and clean some code.

— project green: together we grow !
hello and welcome to wannabe’s first ever company project!
the following members have accepted the invitation to join project green:
MOON JINYOUNG
KIM KIAN
RYEO “LUCIEL” JIHYUN
CHO HANEUL
RYU SIWOO
LEE NOEL
LEE SEOJUN
the first mission is revealed to the members on the morning of august 15: they are invited to move into company-owned dormitories in the seocho district on august 17. the company will assist trainees should they need help with leases, and a company van will pick them up at home on the morning of august 17 to take them to their new dormitories. even after moving, they will be participating in regular training schedules for the most part, with the only exceptions being times when they’re needed for a project activity.
the project is described as “an opportunity to further the training program into new territory, so members can grow together into the best version of themselves”. in order to preserve memories of this period in the project and so that they have material to look back on and learn from, all members are given company-owned digital cameras and asked to film vlogs throughout the duration of project green. members also are asked not to discuss information regarding the project with non-participants at this time. don’t worry, everything will be revealed in due time!
thank you for your interest so far in our first company project, and we hope to have your continuous support as we venture forward with it!
project green muns, welcome!
the first mission will run until 11:59pm est at the end of saturday, august 31. the second mission will be revealed on september 4, during the weekly queue. please tag all posts related to this with lime:projectgreen1.
on writing requirements: at this time, muns may use up to 2 replies regarding project green for regular monthly trainee threads since muses will still be attending regular training schedules at lime entertainment. we do ask that some of your replies this month be about general training and not solely about project green both as a way to further your muse’s skills and so non-project muses have writing partners available. project members are welcome to participate in company workshops as well.
as stated in the post, all seven trainees will be moved into a company-owned apartment in the seocho district, within walking distance of the axis training facility. it’s a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment with a full kitchen connected to a large living room space.
the dedicated project manager, a lime entertainment staff member called han seokjin, will have access to the apartment at all times. han seokjin is a 1989 liner and a former dance coach well known for being strict yet fair, a crossfit enthusiast, and a longtime fan of senior girl group cherish.
members are encouraged to record themselves as often as possible, as the company will be using that footage for official project green media and future video releases. there will also be professional footage shot during important parts of the project.
on saturday, august 17, members will be followed by professional cameras as they arrive at the dormitory and discuss things such as bed and room sharing - as each of the two rooms contains two double beds, all but one member will be sharing a bed. members will also be nudged by their project manager to divide chores up and the like, and the company will provide their first meals together.
on sunday, august 18, as there is no official training schedule, members will be asked to record themselves as they shop for groceries and utensils. in the evening, members will be asked to sit together in the living room and go around the room telling one another what their first impressions of each other were, either when they first met as trainees or when they moved in together.
over the course of the next two weeks, members are asked to vlog themselves as they live and practice together. they will have the opportunity to take personality and mbti tests together, and there will be a special movie night as well. other than that, this period is to be used as a warm-up for the upcoming project activities; project manager han seokjin will come and go as he follows along members and the friendships being built within the group.
things will pick up next month as the second mission is revealed. stay tuned!

Tackling Challenges and Embracing Innovation: Dynamic Pricing Kiosks in Retail & Hospitality for middle east and Africa
As digital transformation continues to reshape customer-facing industries, dynamic pricing kiosks are fast becoming a game-changer in sectors like retail, hospitality and food service. These smart kiosks don't just automate the sales process—they offer real-time pricing adjustments, inventory sync and personalized customer interactions.
However, like any evolving technology, they come with their own set of challenges. From integration issues to customer skepticism, businesses must anticipate and manage these hurdles to unlock their full value.
Let’s explore how dynamic pricing kiosks are creating impact, what issues they commonly face and the solutions paving the way forward.
Key Features and Advantages of Dynamic Pricing Kiosks 🕒 Real-Time Price Adjustments One of the most powerful aspects of dynamic pricing kiosks is their ability to automatically update prices based on inventory levels, time of day, demand fluctuations and promotions. Backed by AI algorithms and real-time data, this ensures your pricing is always optimized for both profitability and customer demand.
💡 Enhanced Customer Experience These kiosks enhance the customer journey by:
Displaying clear and accurate pricing
Offering product availability in real-time
Providing a frictionless, self-directed buying experience.
Customers feel more empowered when they have control and transparency—two things these kiosks deliver effortlessly.
💼 Operational Efficiency and Cost Savings Businesses benefit from:
Eliminating manual pricing errors
Reducing the time spent on updates across multiple locations
Saving on labor costs by automating repetitive tasks
The result? A leaner, more responsive pricing strategy with fewer human touchpoints.
Common Challenges Faced by Dynamic Pricing Kiosks ⚠️ System Downtime and Technical Failures Hardware malfunctions, server outages or software bugs can bring kiosks offline, leading to long queues or lost revenue—especially during peak hours.
🤨 Customer Pushback on Dynamic Pricing When pricing varies throughout the day, customers may perceive it as unfair or confusing, especially if the rationale behind the price shift isn’t communicated clearly.
🔄 Integration with Legacy Systems Many businesses still run on older point-of-sale or ERP systems that don’t naturally integrate with modern kiosks, making data synchronization a challenge.
👥 Inadequate Staff Training Without proper training, frontline staff may struggle to troubleshoot kiosk issues or explain dynamic pricing policies, resulting in poor customer experiences.
Solutions to Overcome Common Dynamic Pricing Kiosk Problems 🛠️ Implement Regular Maintenance and Software Updates A well-planned preventive maintenance routine and scheduled software patches are critical to minimizing downtime and maximizing reliability.
🧠 Enhance Customer Education Clear digital messaging on kiosks and in-store signage can explain the benefits of dynamic pricing—such as discounts during off-peak hours—reducing frustration and building trust.
🔌 Seamless Integration Strategies Work with vendors that offer plug-and-play integrations or custom APIs. Prioritize solutions that align with your current IT infrastructure and support cloud-based synchronization.
📚 Training Programs for Staff Invest in comprehensive onboarding and refresher training to equip employees with the knowledge to assist customers, perform basic troubleshooting and reinforce kiosk value.
Trends Shaping the Future of Dynamic Pricing Kiosks 🤖 AI and Machine Learning Integration As AI becomes more advanced, kiosks are evolving from static machines into intelligent agents that predict, learn and adjust pricing based on behavioral data.
📊 Increased Use of Predictive Analytics Businesses are leveraging predictive tools to forecast demand, manage stock levels, and automate promotions—taking dynamic pricing to the next level.
🌱 Emphasis on Eco-Friendly Designs Newer kiosks are being developed with energy-efficient components, recyclable materials and digital receipts, aligning with growing sustainability goals.
Conclusion Dynamic pricing kiosks are more than just digital ordering machines — they're intelligent business tools that combine real-time decision-making, customer convenience and operational efficiency.
Yes, there are challenges, but with the right technology partners, training and strategic planning, these kiosks can deliver incredible ROI while future-proofing your business.
🚀 Is your business ready to embrace dynamic pricing? Let’s discuss how to make the transition smarter and smoother. Drop your thoughts or questions below!

Availed the Amami Beach Resort ₱6590 (4pax) all inclusive group promo. That’s 3D2N accommodation will full meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) package. They also have the couple package for only ₱3990. I first availed of this promotional voucher when pandemic started and they needed to make sure that the staff are still being paid despite the pandemic affecting all businesses. The resort also does feeding program for children in and around the area.
Amami Beach Resort is located in Talipanan, Puerto Galera. About 20-25mins tryke ride from Balatero Port, usual charge of ₱200-250 or ₱50/pax.
Tumblr media
We took the RORO as we weren’t in a rush coming from Batangas Pier. JAM Liner charges ₱268 while ALPS ₱260. Montenegro RORO leaves the Batangas Pier at 8AM for ₱425 regular fare and travel is around 1hr 40mins. You have to be early as the queue is usually pretty long just about daily. Besides the waiting area in Batangas is actually nice, looking more like an airport departure area. You have to pay ₱30 terminal fee and environmental fee of ₱120/head in Puerto Galera upon arrival. Please do make sure to get your students bring their school ID to avail of discounts.
Getting back to Batangas Pier from Balatero Port we did an advance booking via Kuya Agoy (+63997 074-3378). We paid an extra ₱50/head for the advance booking and he even delivered our tickets at the resort! It did save us time queuing and less hassle as we headed straight to the port entrance to pay for the terminal fee of ₱10/head then waiting area. Departure was 2PM from Balatero Port to Batangas.
The resort has beach front accommodation as well as Greenhouses located by the main road, roughly 3mins walk to the beach and mess hall.
Staff are amazing, food is fairly priced, everything is delicious (thanks mainly to Ate Briza 👏) and big portions too! Shoutout to Jhem and Armi!
Everything was great, staff food and location but the place needs quite a few fixes.
Accommodation : we had an issue with the faulty door and door knob.
Bathroom : clean and all but drain is a bit clogged as it takes awhile for the water to go down.
Service Price List : not updated at all.
I did speak to one of the managers (after contacting him via texts messages and call to which he dropped my call and never responded to my text messages) later in the afternoon. He was not apologetic for not getting back to me and didn’t really do much about my concern. A real let down after having dealt with the owner Fabio before. The staff did their best to be able to assist us but there is only so much they can do. Staff gets 15/10 stars ⭐️ while management gets zero ⭐️. È molto deludente. In all fairness to the manager Filippo, he is young and seemed patient listening to me, atleast.
From the resort, we went to White Beach which is roughly the main attraction in Galera with water sports, souvenirs shops, food shops, for ₱150 tryke ride. Roughly 7-10mins tryke ride.

HELP we had a woman in the library just now CLEARLY reading from a list of books being targeted for censorship in public & school libraries (presumably so she can read them & turn around to bitch about how they’re corrupting the children & need to be removed) & me, being an utter shit, checked out looking for alaska & the perks of being a wallflower for her, gave her a big smile and went “oh wow, you have GREAT taste—these were two of my favorites in high school!!!!!!” (which is true) and she looked like she bit into a lemon
listen she didn’t say why she was checking them out so i can only assume it’s due to her love of excellent 90s & 2000s ya fiction 😇😇😇😇

not to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being sincere on the internet, but your presence matters to people & your absence is felt in ways you can’t possibly realize
i have a standing bi-weekly appointment for a medical treatment, and i ended up missing a few appointments in a row for various reasons. and when i came back to the infusion center earlier this week, the nurses couldn’t stop saying that they really missed me & were wondering why i hadn’t been in
it had never occurred to me that i was anything more than a job duty to them. it never occurred to me that they’d miss seeing me, even though i know that i miss seeing regular library patrons & wonder where they are when they’re away. i just never put two & two together that way
so yes, people would notice if you disappeared off the face of the earth tomorrow. yes, people smile to themselves when you walk in the door. yes, your presence matters to far more people than you realize

My #1 post of 2022
about to drop literally the sickest insider knowledge you will ever receive pls use it responsibly:
are you a teenager? do you wish you had the space & resources & organization to do a thing, whether that's an anime club or a movie night or a big craft workshop or creative writing group or literally whatever? would you like to do your thing totally for free? yes?
okay, then bring it up to a librarian
seriously, teenagers are the absolute hardest group to engage at most libraries & we'll often organize programs that absolutely no one will show up to & it sucks. if you go up to a public librarian & say "hey, some friends & i want to do this thing. does that sound like a feasible teen program for the library?" most people will move heaven & earth to pull it off for you because we know there's an interest in our community. we will go balls to the freaking wall to make it happen
do you want a cosplay contest? a video game tournament? a free escape room? bring it up to the library. it's not a burden or an annoyance at all. it'll be like christmas came early for us

Happy Birthday, Kenma
Tumblr media
Pairing: Kozume Kenma x Reader (gn)
Genre: fluff!
⚠️WARNING⚠️ possible manga spoilers (future careers)!
WC: 1.2k
“—has more DPS but really weak defense so I think we’ll be okay.”
It takes every ounce of your self-control not to giggle out loud and blow your cover when you enter the apartment and hear your boyfriend’s soft tone from the back room as he speaks to the fans diligently watching his live stream.
You tiptoe across the carpet, keeping a steady grip on the white box balanced in your hands as you navigate through the dark apartment, following the light source coming through the crack in the door. You hear the incessant keyboard clicks getting louder the closer you get to his office. The crack of the door is just large enough to see your boyfriend’s pale hands dancing swiftly across the keys and a portion of one of his monitors. You vaguely recognize the game as Overwatch, one of the games he has been playing more often lately. He had mentioned something about a Halloween loot box and new D.Va skin but you were hardly paying attention, to be honest. You just like hearing his calming voice sometimes, oblivious to that actual video game terminology he’s speaking about.
“Alright, one more match and I’ll switch to something else. It's getting late and the queue times are getting ridiculous.”
You stifle a chuckle just imagining the responses his fans must be giving him in the chatroom. From your experience occasionally watching Kodzuken’s streams yourself, you know there is likely a string of people begging him for ‘just one more game’ or ‘please play this one next!’
Kenma is well loved by his large fanbase and his own dedication to them is clear.
Despite today marking the gamer’s 23rd birthday, Kenma had refused to change his usual streaming schedule or even end early. He generally kept private information, including birthdays and relationships, a secret, claiming his fans were only interested in watching him play games, nothing more. How the man remains completely oblivious to the fact his fans are enamored with him rather than just his gaming skills remains a mystery to you and all of his friends. You are positive the fans would be absolutely flooding his social media with birthday wishes and gifts if they knew what today is.
But alas, Kenma refused any of you and Kuroo’s suggestions of nice dinners or small gatherings with friends, claiming he has to maintain his regular Friday streaming schedule and that his birthday is “just another day.”
Hence why you stand outside of the door of his office now.
With the help of his loyal (read: devious) best friend Kuroo, you were able to secure a copy of your boyfriend’s apartment keys and sneak in with a fresh apple pie you had pre-ordered from Kenma’s favorite local bakery. You take a deep breath to calm your racing heartbeat and lingering worries about his impending response before gingerly pushing open the door and stepping into the room.
With his headphones on and facing his screen, Kenma does not immediately notice your entrance. His slender fingers continue tapping keys and shifting the mouse rapidly as he shoots at enemies on the screen. It is only when he glances over at his second monitor to see the chat flying by with variations of ‘oh my god did someone just walk in,’ ‘there’s someone in his house!’ and ‘is that his s/o!?’ that Kenma realizes something is off and his head whips in your direction, clearly shocked to see you standing there.
You offer a sheepish grin as you step forward, slowly lowering the opened box in your hands so he can see the contents.
“Happy birthday, Kenma,” you sweetly cheer.
Unbeknownst to you both, the chatroom nearly crashed with the sheer volume of surprised messages. Naturally, they vary from ‘oh my god they’re so cute!’ to ‘TODAY IS KODZUKEN’S BIRTHDAY!?’
Kenma seems at a loss for a few moments, golden eyes darting back and forth between the warm apple pie in your hands topped with a single yellow candle to your bright, loving smile. Finally, his tense body seems to relax and a small smile graces his lips as he holds your gaze.
“Thank you,” he whispers.
He rises to his feet to gently take the box from your hands and place it on the desk, stream forgotten as he makes his way back to you. You tilt your head, just about to ask what he’s doing when he gently takes your hands in his own and places a soft peck on your lips. Your face heats up at the rare display of affection and the wide grin stretching across your face causes your cheeks to ache. For a few moments, as the two of you hold eye contact, it feels you are the only people in the world and you find yourself wanting to savor and carve this moment into your memory for the rest of your life. It is only the muffled robotic voice announcing “defeat” from Kenma’s headset that interrupts the moment, causing him to glance back at his set-up with a surprised expression, having clearly forgotten that he was in the middle of a match, let alone still recording a stream. Just by briefly looking over the chat he can tell his fans have half a million questions that will be plaguing his Twitter feed for weeks to come. Some fans are even asking for your social media handles and asking if you two will ever do a stream together.
Kenma sighs and returns to his chair, rolling forward to sit in front of his computer once more. You awkwardly linger for a moment, slightly disappointed to see your boyfriend returning to his work so soon. You understand, though. This is his career that he had built from the ground up for himself and your involvement was definitely not something he had planned for. With a slightly heavy heart you make a move to leave the room just as quietly as you had entered but Kenma’s hand shoots out to grab your own before you can take more than half a step.
“Everyone, thank you for coming to today’s stream but unfortunately I will have to end early to spend the rest of my birthday with my partner.”
Your heart stutters at his announcement.
The chatroom is once again flooded with comments, most of which are cooing about how cute Kodzuken is being and how uncharacteristically happy he looks now that you’re here. He pays them no mind however, and swiftly shuts down his streaming program and logs out of Overwatch with one hand, Halloween loot boxes long forgotten. Once his screen turns black and the flashy RGB lights of his computer dim, his cat-like eyes are back on you, lacing your fingers together and gently squeezing your hand.
“Do you want to do anything specific,” he asks.
The giggle that unwittingly escapes your lips sounds absolutely school girlish and you would be embarrassed if you weren’t too busy feeling absolutely elated.
“It’s your birthday, KenKen; you should be the one deciding.”
He looks away, thoughtful for a moment before his eyes shift back to you in question.
“...can we play Animal Crossing? You left your Switch here last time so I charged it.”
Even after a full evening of video games, Kenma still wants to play. His innocent passion leaves your chest feeling fuzzy and you nod your consent.
“Anything for you, Kenma.”
... ... ...
Happy birthday to my favorite pretty setter. ❤️

hey, everyone, so quick life update:
I am going to visit my family and friends back where I’m from for Christmas. I am leaving this morning, arriving sometime in the afternoon, and then staying for only four full days after that. I will keep you all posted if anything happens.
As such, I have the queue going and I’ll pop in whenever I can, but “regular programming”, as it were, is on hold until the 28th, when I return home.
Thanks for understanding, I’ll be popping in as I can, and y’all have a great Christmas if you celebrate and happy holidays no matter what you do or don’t celebrate! love y’all. ❤️

Check in tag!
Thanks for the tag @corkytheguar :D
1. Why did you choose your url?
My main is DruidX, which has been my handle on nearly every single platform ever since.... well, since the World Wide Web became a feasible thing to have in one’s home ^.^; Because this is the blog to which all other random interesting things are thrown, I thought I’d keep in theme with “Dru reblogs stuff”, for I am Dru... and I am reblogging stuff XD
2. Any sideblogs? If you have them name them and why you have them?
Technically @/dru-reblogs-stuff is a sideblog already. It gets more personal stuff, and also everything I like that’s interesting to me. I keep thinking I should narrow it down further though, and make seperate fashion & star wars blogs, because I rb that stuff on the regular...
@/druidx is my main, and is my Writeblr blog, for, well, all my writing, other people’s writing, and writing related advice/ resources.
@/dru-plays-starbound is the blog I used to rb Starbound stuff, and also post my starbound builds to. I haven’t updated it in a while, thought there’s lots of stuff still to post... I just haven’t had the inclination to fight with a graphics program and screenshots.
@/nine-blessed-hero breaks my naming scheme sadly, but this is now my dedicated Elder Scrolls blog, for art and fanfic. It’s also not as well kept as I would like it to be (I’ve got 600 items in draft to read though and comment on, so it’s slow going).
Finally there is the essentially abandoned @/things-my-rm-says-to-her-lego. This started as an out-of-context quote blog for things my roommate muttered while sorting/ building the old Lego her parents dropped off ~October 2020. I have no idea what to do with it now said roommate is no longer saying strange things to her Lego...
3. How long have you’ve been on tumblr?
I’ve just passed my one year anniversary, 18 May -- or at least, the anniversary of my first post which I’m sure was made only a week or so after I joined. Basically I joined up not long after the Lockdown was made official in the UK.
4. Do you have a queue tag?
Yes! It’s just “q”, because I am both lazy and basic.
5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?
As mentioned above, I joined not long after the Lockdown was made official in the UK. Because I had more time, I was looking back at old works and wanting both to share them and to get advice on how to get better. I’d heard somewhere that Tumblr was to writing as DeviantArt is to art, so I figured I may as well join and see what I could get out of the experience. Again, because I suddenly had more time, I bought TESIV: Oblivion on Steam and started to get into TESblr as well as Writeblr (which incidentally, is how I met the wonderful Corky ^.^).
6. Why did you choose your icon?
I wanted something that reflected my interests (boy do I love Tea :D), but also wasn’t fussy, so I found a site filled with free SVG icons and picked this one out. I’ve had a lot of complements on it, so clearly it was a good choice ^.^ I’ve tried to keep the theme of teapots over all my blogs.
7. Why did you choose your header?
I don’t think any of my blogs have a header because I just couldn’t find anything I liked?
8. What’s your post with the most notes?
Across them all, it’s a “Last Line Tag” game one, posted Sep 22 2020 with 328 notes.
9. How many mutuals do you have?
28, across the board.
10. How many followers do you have?
I feel that’s somewhat defeating the point of not having them public. Let’s just say I have enough.
11. How many people do you follow?
181; just enough to keep things interesting, but not enough to be overwhelmed.
12. Have you ever made a shitpost?
No; the most I’ve done would have been an incorrect quote.
13. How often do you use tumblr each day?
I’m currently working from home, so it’s a permanent fixture on one of my background virtual desktops, ready to be flipped over to when work is dull or when I’m procrastinating writing.
14. Did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? Who won?
I think someone tried to insinuate I’d offended them once, but they hid in the tags and I could never work out if it was my tags they were arguing against, or the post in general (it was a rb). But generally no; I’m Internet Old and just done with the Drama so I don’t engage.
15. How do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts?
They can jog on. If I think it’s important, then I will chose to rb it, but telling me I’m a horrible person if I don’t? That’s a surefire way to ensure I dislike you and your cause, and will ignore you out of spite.
16. Do you like tag games?
<Points to this post> I fuckin’ love tag game, my dude. I’m bad at doing them sometimes, but I honestly adore when people are thinking about enough to say “You know who’d want to do this? Dru!”.
17. Do you like ask games?
Slightly less so, because again, I’m bad at keeping up with these things, and a full askbox hangs over my head like the sword of Damocles. But that you chose to poke me with a question about me or my writing that you’re curious about, well; it does warm my heart.
18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
im-a-seraph-winging-it, rewrit, adelinewriting (though she’s no longer on Tumblr) maybe? idk ^.^; I guess not knowing is one of the nicer things about Tumblr; it makes everything a little more personal.
19. Do I have a crush on a mutual?
Yes. I’m not saying who (it’s sort of embarrassing to be the age I am and have a crush), but they have a unique and exquisite writing style, and I care for it very much.
20. Tags?
I’ll do my usual bods: @aquadestinyswriting @alias-levi , but I’m also curious about @homesteadchronicles @writtenbyrain and @scribeofred (0 pressure tho! I know this is an unsolicited tag)

Top story (continued from facing page): -talk filming, fans and family with 'Three Card Monte' star -finished, and hotly tipped for several major awards come the season, what does Dame Angela have in the pipeline? She's tight-lipped, but the question makes her smile. “Naturally I don't want to give too much away – an actress must maintain some mystery lest the camera fall out of love with her – but I can tell you I have several options in mind, and some of them are very exciting.” But is it a question of which project to take on, or which to take on first? “Well, of course, there are no guarantees, but... yes, I imagine some of them will wait.” It's an unusual level of power for an actor to wield, but at this stage in her career Dame Angela is more than entitled to wield it. How does she feel about winning the showbiz game so spectacularly? “Oh, I feel as though I've been playing a game of my own devising, to which even I don't know the rules.” She laughs. “No, but really, I don't think I've ever thought of it as playing a game. I go up for the parts I think are interesting or challenging, and I've been fortunate enough to get them more often than not. Then, when the part is finished, I move on to the next thing I want to do. There's no strategy, not really, not on my part. Naturally, my agent might tell you something very different!” Having the right agent can certainly be the key to success in the entertainment industry, and Dame Angela has been with Derek Mette, of MetteTalent, for many years now.“More than I care to admit,” she tells me with a laugh, “Derek has been with me since the beginning, really. We're old friends, at this point – our families exchange Christmas cards every year.” Family can be a challenge for someone who's trying to keep the momentum of their career going, and Dame Angela surprised the world when she took a year out of acting to give birth to her son, Anthony.“Yes, at that time it simply wasn't done; one could have a career, or one could have a family. Especially since I was very much on my own with it all. But I was able to get back in front of the cameras quite quickly, and I wouldn't change things for the world. Becoming a mother made me a better actress, I think, because it opened up that whole range of experiences. The highs and the lows of childrearing.” In fact, Dame Angela starred alongside young Anthony in A is for Apple when he was only eight months old. He briefly followed in her footsteps after leaving school, and seemed set for similar levels of industry acclaim. But it all came to a devastating halt when he developed an addiction that led to him being discovered unconscious in his trailer on the set of The Grasswater Affair. He'd overdosed. “I don't like to talk about it,” Dame Angela says, her mouth downturned. “I found it very hard. But now, of course, he's been in recovery for many years, and he does his little plays all around the country. It's behind us, and I'd like it to stay that way.” A change of subject, then; what does she make of the rumours that she is currently performing as a costumed character on The Masked Singer UK? “On- I'm sorry, what's that?” I show her a clip on my phone. “Good heavens, no.” But isn't that exactly what she'd say if it was her? “Well, I don't know. I'd never even seen it until just now. But it all seems a little childish for my taste. I'm far too committed to my art to do light entertainment.” Time, it seems, will tell. But if Dame Angela is indeed a participant in The Masked Singer, she hides it well. There’s time for one last question, so I try to make it a good one. What, I ask, does Dame Angela consider her proudest achievement to date? “Oh, that’s a difficult question. I simply couldn’t choose... Naturally, becoming a Dame was a great honour, and not one I expected at all, which made it all the more precious. But then, the first time I won an Oscar was a real moment of pride, and one that’s never soured with time. And, of course, every award and every round of applause is a moment of pride for any actor; it means I’ve done the job, and done it well, and that it has been appreciated by the audience in front of me. What more can any actress ask for?” MARY HODGES Dame Angela Crowley’s latest film, Three Card Monte, is in cinemas from the 12th of February.
Centre right: OWAS to host ‘magic’ event Literary society’s next gala theme announced The Oscar Wilde Appreciation Society has announced the theme for its spring social event, which is to be inspired by all things magical. Famed far beyond its actual membership for its lavish balls and banquets, the society has in the past held events held together by motifs such as 'Luck', which took place in a casino, 'Snow', which included a trip to a ski slope, and 'Flight', during which all participants had the opportunity to glide above the dancers on wires. This time, the theme is 'Magic', and while details are still being kept tightly under wraps, it seems fairly certain that Aziraphale Fell, London's most celebrated stage magician and a long-time member of the Oscar Wilde Appreciation Society, will be performing at the event. When the society throws open its doors each season, it's quite possible to go all night without seeing a single regular member of the club. While the organising committee is out in full force, soliciting donations from the wealthy patrons who attend the parties, and the society president stands up to make a toast at the beginning of dinner, it's largely outsiders who descend upon the Oscar Wilde Appreciation Society's chosen venue. In fact, the scale and opulence of these events has led some to speculate that OWAS is not a literary appreciation society at all, but rather a shadowy networking opportunity for the rich and powerful. Indeed, at the 'Flight' event, it's rumoured that two world leaders met in the queue for the wire-flying and laid the foundations for a later trade deal between their nations. The society's everyday goings-on are, I'm told, far more pedestrian and literary. But - as the current president, Edwin Pearce, often says - “what's an Oscar Wilde society without a little hedonism?” There's altruism, too, however; the society makes a substantial donation to a charity chosen by the members each year. This year's charity has yet to be determined, but last year the children of the Wessex Street Hospital enjoyed a very special Christmas thanks to a £20,000 cheque from the Oscar Wilde Appreciation Society. Much of the funds required to make such lavish events and donations possible are raised at those very events, which take place once a season. Tickets for the 'Magic' event have not yet been released, but previous events' tickets have sold for anything from £200 to £2000. A limited number of reduced price tickets are generally made available, so keep an eye on the Oscar Wilde Appreciation Society's website at oscarwas.org.uk if you're looking to get in without breaking the bank. If The Amazing Mr Fell will indeed be performing at the event, it might explain his recent reduction in performances – his show has gone down from six nights a week to just four, eliminating his Wednesday and Saturday performances. Magic fans in the capital can therefore hold out hope that once preparations for his upcoming performance are over, tickets might become easier to obtain. And, of course, the 'Magic' event itself promises to be one big avocado. CITRON DEUX-CHEVAL
Centre right: Drawing back the veil again Mystic Madame reportedly plotting TV return Two years after Drawing Back the Veil with Telepathic Tracy last aired, its old Saturday night slot is set to become vacant again – and rumours abound that the show may be set to return. For the last two years, live draws have been condensed into a fifteen-minute slot on BBC One, followed by an episode of one of the longer 45-minute drama series the BBC tend to favour these days. Much of the pageantry that used to go along with the weekly draw was shifted unceremoniously onto the National Lottery's YouTube channel or website, and the delivery of the actual results became more akin to the reading of a weather report before a return to the usual programming of the channel. Now, however, the BBC has put out a press release announcing that the National Lottery will now return to a half-hour draw show, allowing for 'a little more excitement and glamour'. This, the press release suggests, could take the form of a very brief trivia game before the draw, a return to celebrities wishing everyone luck before pressing the all-important button, a chance to showcase musical acts during the show, or some combination of the above. I'm all for a return to the showbiz nature of the nation's most mainstream gambling ring, but it's the shortening of the subsequent timeslot that has my attention. Already, just a day after the BBC's announcement, speculation is rife about what – and who – might be about to fill that second half-hour time slot. Most of the shows the BBC produces these days are designed for a 45-minute or hour-long format, and producers will be understandably reluctant to try to condense comedy, gameshows or drama into such a small space – especially given the National Lottery's occasional tendency to overrun. Pre-recorded shows have come unstuck before when the Camelot machines have jammed or some other calamity has befallen the draw, most notably in 2019 when the initial episode of Season 6 of Sherlock aired without the crucial first three minutes that explained the detective's cunning escape from the previous season's climactic scrape. It's the sort of situation that calls for a steady hand and an almost supernatural ability to adjust to disaster. Who better to take on the challenge than a woman who's had years of practice? Telepathic Tracy, the Mystic Madame, is very much still working her mysterious ways despite her departure from our TV screens – notably in The New Aquarian - and what better way to follow a disappointing lotto result than with the reassurance that this week, your luck will be better, or at the very least predictable? I, for one, predict Madame Tracy's triumphant return to television - and what's more, I welcome it. EDWARD BIGGS

Several readers got in touch to explain that this is not, in fact, the case, and we would like to set the record straight. Country, or country and western, music is a very specific type of folk music, and while often associated with American artists, it is not simply the American version of folk. Furthermore, music must fit specific criteria to be considered country, and Anathema's does not. While country music belongs to the overarching genre of folk, not all folk music is country music, regardless of the nationality of the performer. We regret the misunderstanding, and hope to do better in future. If you notice an error in any of our articles, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing [email protected]. I had a great week fixing a whole bunch of bugs.
bugs
I fixed taglist drag-select, which was not moving the to-be selected indices down with the scroll. Sorry for the trouble here. You can now also ctrl+drag-select to deselect.
There was a bug in the new virtual siblings and parents lookup system that meant some grandparents and siblings were not appearing. For instance, for parents, 'samus aran' might have 'metroid', and 'metroid' would have 'nintendo', but 'samus aran' would not have 'nintendo'. Thanks to help from users, I was able to reproduce it and fix the problem. When you update, the client will spend a few seconds regenerating the lookups and finding the missing links. It will queue up a bit more work for the background display sync to do later on. In my test situation, the PTR went from 189,000 sync rows to 192,000.
Autocomplete results in manage tags now list parents beneath every tag they apply to. Previously, parents could only exist in the list once, so they were accidentally de-duping and only ending up beneath the last applicable tag. Now you get plenty.
Also, these 'write' autocomplete results now show sibling and parent data for the tag that matches your input text even if that tag has no count. When that tag has sibling data, all the siblings are loaded as well. This sounds obscure, but you'll notice when you next start entering tags on a service with a lot of siblings. It should make it easier to quick-type complicated tags in manage tags.
Typing to get autocomplete results in search pages with thumbnails is now significantly faster and more responsive when 'searching immediately' is turned on. This routine gathers count-accurate results based on the thumbnails in front of you and then sends that data down to the database for sibling population. This suddenly got laggy with the new virtuals system, but I have improved how it schedules its searches and performs its tag lookups, and it should be much better now.
An unusual situation with a 'null character' tag that could not be displayed in the client should be better. This tag is detected, the rendering problem caught, and the user notified. The database routine that corrects bad tags now also fixes this tag and forces a tag presentation refresh once it is done.
speed
I spent a bunch of time in the siblings and parents system this week, and autocomplete and tags in general, running profiles on complex data and optimising various calls. I also sped up a critical new optimisation used across the program. Tag searches, autocomplete lookups, tag processing, tag display sync, and anything that runs frequently in small amounts should now be a bit faster. The only thing that may run a bit slower is tag display sync for very complicated tag parent situations, due to the more thorough logic in the fixes above. Thank you to users who helped with profiling here.
Tag display sync now only tries to run every 30 seconds (up from every ~3 seconds) when allowed to run in 'normal' time. It also takes breaks when it thinks a bunch of other work is going on. It was running hotter and faster than we needed, and it made the client too laggy, so I am pulling it back until I can make it more intelligent. I am also considering breaking the main display sync maintenance job into even more granular pieces. I will keep working.
full list
misc:
fixed the bad position indexing when drag-selecting taglists that were scrolled down. this also caused some weird selection when scrolled and clicks included a little mouse movement. sorry for the trouble!
ctrl+drag-select now deselects!
fetching tag autocomplete results when you have thumbnails and 'searching immediately' on, which has been way too slow recently, now cancels much faster. in some large page situations, it was adding multi-second lag on the first character-press. it also runs faster overall
hydrus should now deal better with invalid tags that contain the null character (there it one we know about on the PTR, from a decode of botched Shift JIS, which could crash the client from too many errors during critical paint periods). when a tag like this turns up in a taglist, thumbnail, or canvas background, it now renders as an appropriate 'invalid tag' string, and a one-time 'woah, bad tag, run fix tags now' popup appears
regular tag cleaning now looks for and removes null characters, so all new sources of these bad tags should now be eliminated
_database->check and repair->fix invalid tags_ now fixes tags with the null character. it also fixes tags so broken that after cleaning they have no subtag left. it also now forces a full media tag reload when it is done for all media
the 'regen storage mappings', 'regen display mappings', and repopulate from cache' database routines now have an additional step where you can order them only to work on one tag service, so regenning or repopulating local tags, which usually takes a couple seconds, doesn't need to wait two hours for the PTR to go as well
added some menu help to the 'profile modes' debug menu, and gave 'reducing program lag' help page a pass
fixed virtual display regeneration on service delete
.
parents and siblings:
fixed situations where some grandparent and sibling relationships would not appear in the virtual system. it was a bug when certain links of a multi-part display 'chain' were updated at different times. when repopulating chain data, the sibling and parent update routines now correctly chase their complete chains both when wiping ideal data and repopulating from raw data, hitting all levels of the chain, ensuring to go back up and down chains when there are multiple grandsiblings/children/parents, and chasing parents where one or both members have better siblings. thank you to the several users who reported and helped figure out this problem, which was not simple to reproduce (issue #725)
your ideal display data will be regenerated on update, which should not take more than a couple of seconds. it will likely correct some siblings and add some grandparents to be filled in by the siblings/parents sync. my PTR test environment went up from about 189,000 display rows to 192,000
while sibling and parent lookup is more thorough (and hence more expensive), I also optimised many parts of lookup week. I believe tag display sync and tag processing will be much faster for tags with simple sibling and parent relationships, and slightly slower for tags with complex relationships and many instances to files on your drive. as always, let me know what sort of processing speeds and lag you get, and if you know how to make a db profile, please send them in when it gets bad
when a 'write' autocomplete results list includes parent expansion rows (as in _manage tags_), parents now show duplicated and properly for all the tags that have them, including siblings and other children/grandchildren (previously, a parent label could only exist once in a list, which meant parents were ending up hanging off the last valid tag for which they applied)
'write' autocompletes now show results that exactly match the text entry, and all their siblings, when they do not have count but do have sibling or parent data. so, if you type in 'samus aran', and it has a sibling to 'character:samus aran', but 'samus aran' doesn't actually have count, you now get it and all siblings anyway. this may need tuning, but it solves a persistent and annoying lookup and quick-sibling-access problem in _manage tags_
copying tags and their indented parents now removes the parent indent whitespace
tag sync display now takes way longer breaks (now 30 seconds, was 2.5) between 'normal' background work periods. this thing was hammering people far harder than needed and could clog up db write/commit time and nobble UI responsitivity when big bumps collided
the tag display maintenance manager now also tries to detect when many siblings or parents are streaming in (from a migration or a repository process with a heap of data), and pauses work while that continues
greatly sped up mass imports of sibling and parent data, either from tag migration or big dialog pastes. what was 40 rows/s should now be about 1,000 rows/s
fixed the database menu's 'regenerate tag parents lookup cache', which wasn't hooked up
.
boring changes:
gave tag parents and siblings update, regen, and chain fetch a full pass, correcting bad queries to fix the above, fixing raw pair chain level navigation and parent-sibling idealisation, and optimised these lookups as well
fixed some tag_id vs ideal_tag_id nomenclature (and related bugs) in tag parents cache
optimised 'all known tags' autocomplete count fetching a little. tag autocomplete and search should be a bit faster in this domain
reduced display sync pre-processing overhead by about 30% with a better random pair sampling routine
reduced the overhead of my now very commonly used single integer memory table select optimisation. this now recycles tables after use, which reduces overhead about 50% in small number scenarios. all features of the database will enjoy this speed improvement, particularly small repetitive tag lookup jobs (such as the new display sync and repository tag processing)
reduced overhead on some sibling chain lookup code
reduced overhead on the sibling lookup used by manage tag dialog taglist
reduced overhead on some parent chain lookup code
tiny optimisation on single sibling chain lookup
sped up the ancient OG single tag->tag-id fetching routine, seems to work about twice as fast now
more misc optimisations, mostly list/set/dict comprehension rewriting to reduce overhead, across virtual sibling and parent code
added a full combined siblings and parents unit tests for the main missing parent chain link problem solved this week
added a full combined siblings and parents unit test for large real world data added in multiple pieces
'a file identifier was missing!' critical errors now print a stack trace to the log for further debugging info
updated the 'help my db is broke.txt' document with a couple new comments
next week
I want to do some code cleanup, catching up on bad old code and making the duplicate potentials search non-interrupting. I'll also prototype a database mode that may improve performance on HDDs. Other than that, I want to properly plan and start work on the big network improvements that I will finish the year on.

A Cautionary Tale? A Love Story? You Decide
It's been one of those rollercoaster weeks, one that began with a great deal of pain, which I tried to ignore at first, so as not to ruin my 17- year old’s already Corona-compromised birthday party. At some point during our 5 p.m. family Zoom celebration, I quietly left the room and went upstairs to lie down, writhe in pain, get back up, bend over, moan, repeat. This continued through the night Monday – and at one point, I remember thinking that labor wasn’t this bad and that I should probably go to the emergency room. In this new world we’re in, that thought was quickly dismissed by one word: COVID. I paced the floor at 3 a.m., alternately moaning and then bopping my head and sort of softly singing what kept running through my head, which was the chorus of The Knack’s 1979 hit song, “My Sharona.” Only my version went “My Corona.” Yes, even while suffering, I’m clever that way.
By Tuesday morning the pain had subsided. I was exhausted however, and slept throughout the day. “Tricia! Drink this! Jesus, she’s burning up.” It was the alarm in my husband’s voice that I responded to more than the command. I sat up, drank the water he was holding out to me, and when I caught my reflection in the mirror over the dresser I had the brief, feverously detached impression of someone who’d sat under a sun lamp for too long. Sun lamp, the words made me almost giggle out loud. Sun-lamp, sun-lamp, sun-lamp…Does anyone even know what that is anymore? A few hours later I had a virtual appointment with my regular GP, during which the decision was made for me to go to the office first thing Wednesday for a full exam. My instructions (my fever-addled brain again added the words “should I choose to accept them” - hehehe), for entering the building would come in the form a text.
My office exam was efficient and thorough. Upon arrival, I called the office and someone met me at a side door. As we were both masked and gloved, we nodded and murmured muffled greetings. Two PAs and an MD palpated my tender abdomen while I stifled screams. They decided that I should have a C-T scan that day, with the expectation that the offending culprit was a kidney stone. As many radiology facilities are currently closed, it took a few hours for them to locate one that would take me. My scan took place at 4:30. I was the last patient of their day.
Fast forward to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. I picked up the call, which was remarkable in itself because anyone who knows me knows how irritating it is that, a) my phone is always on silent mode, and, b) I rarely answer numbers I don’t recognize. It was another doctor from Vanguard, calling to let me know that my C-T scan showed no evidence of kidney stones – “Yay!” BUT, he cut in, it did show acute appendicitis. What I needed to do, he said, was to go directly to the nearest ER.
So here’s where this story really begins, because I was about to get a reality check regarding the difference between the inconveniences of “social distancing” and quite literally, matters of life and death. For those of us who are shuffling around at home in our sweatpants, eating too much, complaining about the buffoonery of our President, laughing at all the funny memes, and who are, to one degree or another, COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS to the fact that health care workers do not have the luxury of ANY of that, here’s the newsflash: The Corona virus has virtually SHUT down normal operations for hospitals and surgical facilities, so if you’re also laughing in the face of social-distancing guidelines, and just can’t wrap your head around the possibility of contracting this deadly disease, know this too: If you break your arm, or your spouse has a heart attack, or your child’s strange rash won’t go away and you’re just really concerned, good luck. We are NOT in Kansas anymore, peeps.
I considered doing a bit of a negative a rant on the first hospital that I went to here, but perhaps that wouldn’t be fair. “The nearest ER” for me would have been another hospital, but due to their somewhat dubious reputation, we opted to go just a bit farther away. The best thing I can say about that experience was that the safety protocols to enter the ER were impressive. Picture the scene in E.T. where the Hazmat-suited guys from the space program find out about him and “invade” the house in a tunnel of white - then picture the people standing six feet apart outside of say, ShopRite, only these people don’t look so great. They’re kind of bent over, or swaying, or leaning on someone else. Then count your blessings that your gut hurts and you’re not bleeding out…or struggling to breathe.
Three hours later, after they’d reviewed my scans and completed all of the necessary pre-op tests (blood work, EKG, urine analysis), I got the word that most of the ORs were being used as ICUs for COVID patients, and they were only doing “emergent” surgeries. They sent me home with massive doses of antibiotics, and a referral to see their staff general surgeon - outpatient.
I figured they were right, too. Must not be very serious. I was doing well with that notion until the following morning, when I heard the barely concealed shock in the voice of my regular MD.
“Did they see your scans?” his tone serving only to increase my anxiety.
“Yeah. But my appendix hasn’t exploded yet.” I said.
“Ah,” he sighed, “I know things are being handled differently in the ‘current environment,’ but last time I checked, acute appendicitis was emergent.”
Okay, pay attention now, because here’s where it gets really interesting: See if you can answer his parting questions:
“Do you have a general surgeon? Preferably one with their own facility?”
So, do you? And if you do, are you sure they’re even open right now? I sure as hell didn’t (and the name they gave me at the hospital turned out to be for a doctor whose answering machine told me he was not seeing new patients). And the idea that it was now pretty much my problem to solve was a little intimidating – especially for someone who generally needs to be told that they’re sick (enough) or in (enough) pain to seek help—but that’s another story. Now that doctor, who I respect and like a lot, said he’d be trying to find me one, but that I should do my research as well.
My husband and I made a fairly long list of people/places to call, and split it. Those we were able to reach at all offered possible solutions to my dilemma, but each dead-ended pretty quickly. I focused on the task now, trying to ignore what it might mean that the ache in my belly seemed to be spreading down my right leg.
As of this writing, I have yet to hear back from my regular GP and yet, here I sit, post-op, able to get this down mostly because of a Facebook message I sent to one of the nurses in the Belleville Public School district. The only real help I got came from her, a nurse, who responded immediately to an “in-boxed” message, and kept responding for the next hour, sending me the names and phone numbers of doctors (sometimes with their credentials!), links to possible facilities, and words of encouragement. She gave me her personal cell phone number and encouraged me to call it if I had questions and/or to let her know how it was going. I felt like she meant it, too. I also think she was responsible for the first in a series of serendipitous events that just may have saved my life. One of the names she gave me turned out to be the dad of one of my kid’s friends.
At that point, things happened pretty quickly. I called him (at home) and told him my situation. In a matter of 20 minutes, he had my scans and had booked  a time slot for me for same-day surgery at Clara Maass. He’s a high-energy, outgoing kind of guy, and although I’d stood on sidelines with him and his lovely wife at many a sports event, I don’t know him well enough, nor did I think it was appropriate to laugh out loud when he laid out the plan: “With everything going on, I just really want to do you – and get you the hell out of there!”
So here I am, more grateful to him than I can possibly express and having some time to consider just how random and crazy and dangerous that whole situation was (turns out, my appendix had begun to perforate after all, and the real fun was just beginning) and how fortunate I am.
But the real heroes here - Oh, and God, aren’t we all a little sick of the “hero” thing? – well get over it, and listen up! From the minute I walked through the door of Clara Maass yesterday, my experience was the best it could possibly have been. The nurses! OMG the nurses - I was in pre-op for hours. Lucky as I was to have been squeezed in to an already crowded surgical schedule, the truth of the matter was that my presence had required a quick shifting of resources—stretchers and space and - nurses. My sudden appearance in the queue was inconvenient, possibly even annoying. And yet all of them, including the nurse who ran the OR, came by to check on me, to give me extra blankets, to chat with me, and laugh with me. A friend’s daughter-in-law, who is a nurse there, got a text from him and even she came from three floors below just to say hello and charm me with her Australian accent and tired-but-twinkling blue eyes. I swear, for me? The whole experience was a cross between a weirdly sterile spa stay, and – as mine all happened to be women - a girls’ sleepover with your best girlfriends—only these were women I'd just met (but they’d also pretty much seen me naked, so, there’s that…).
Most of them were nearing the end of a 12-hour shift. As I lay there, relaxed and warm, reading and texting, they race-walked back and forth among those of us who waited, or were recovering. I lost count of how many times one of them asked me if I was okay, or if I needed something. They ate their dinners on the move, taking bites and then sprinting off, tearing off one set of gloves, putting on another. These people Do. Not. Sit. The sink was right near my bed, so I saw a lot of hand-washing traffic too, and a lot of red, chapped, over-sanitized hands. They spoke in soothing voices to those who were waiting, and possibly scared, and loud-enough voices for those emerging from the cloud of anesthesia to understand. Sometimes they shouted good-natured complaints to one another, or teased one another – and me, as when one started repacking those bags they give you for your clothes, amusement in her voice as she yelled, “What the hell did you do here, shove it all in like a little kid? Your purse is open – Maria, come over here and see this – she’s a mess!” Hahahaha! One came by and pointed to the cover of the book I was reading entitled “The Silent Patient”, and joked “That’s the kind we like!”
I even began to wonder if what I was getting was “special treatment” reserved for those whose surgeries were personally called-in by the surgeon. Once he arrived, however, it was clear that not only did they not know he was the one who got me in, but they chided him in the same affectionate way. At a point, I said to one of them, “Doctors think they’re all that, but nurses really run the show don’t they?” She winked at me and elbowed me a little, “Like husbands, honey – they just think they’re in charge!”
I lounged, for over four hours while they stood on what had to be tired feet, hands on hips as they talked to me, telling me which part of the hospital they’d spent the morning in, or where they were headed next in this crazy, all-hands-on-deck environment. We chatted about jobs and kids, and only when the topic of this deadly disease came up did the lack of words become conspicuous. Then it was all a mime of sad shakes of the head and downward glances.
It occurs to me today that after all of this, I'm not sure I would recognize any of them tomorrow if I saw them on street – nor they me. Of course, we were all masked. But maybe I would – if I could see their eyes again. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that most of all, those eyes conveyed a profound kindness. And laughter, and concern, and compassion, and dedication—and a toughness that allows them to do it all.
I'll tell you a secret: I am a person who often has a weird response to unexpected kindness - it makes me cry. I welled up more than once yesterday afternoon. I may have been just one of many for them – this is just what they do - but for me, a bond was made. I will always remember them.
Make no mistake: it’s no hardship to be home in your sweatpants with your gel manicure looking a little ratchet, and your spouse and kids seeming more like houseguests who have overstayed their welcome. Today, I want you to feel really, really blessed and grateful, and if you’re like me, a generally healthy person who never really gave too much thought to the job that these people do, I hope I was able to convey just a little of it.
That school nurse who rescued me put it this way: “I took an oath when I graduated just as physicians do. I have followed it for 28 years and it has never let me or my patients down.” That whole oath thing is good and important and all, but the heart behind it gives it grace.
So, if you get an invitation to do one of those car processions where you beep your horn and cheer for the local health care workers as they go in to, or leave, work– get in your car and go. Or, just mail them each a check for a million dollars. Either way.

Shaken And A Little Bit Stirred
Our three weeks in Greece has gone by in the wink of an eye. We have loved all of it. While Milos has been our least favourite (but still very enjoyable), Folegandros was scenically stunning and the town intimate and magical. Little streets and alleys lead into squares and while tourists have definitely found it, it’s lovely to see the locals having hung on to their little houses, out on their porches in the evenings chatting away. The tourist crowd are mainly couples or families so no pumping dance music to detract from the gentle vibe.
The Peloponnese is a must-see and I hope this has come through in the blog. As a tourist in July wanting to go where the crowds aren’t this is the place. And there is something for everyone; history buffs, museum enthusiasts, hardy hikers or beach sloths. So much to see, so much to do and a month there would not feel too long.
But today we leave and it’s a mega travel day so up and about doing chores. First off was shuffling the odd piece of still damp washing on our balcony washing line (one of the small and welcome creature comforts of an extended holiday) to take full advantage of sun and breeze. Then packing of cases which is becoming increasingly strategic commensurate with additional purchases, followed by getting the hotel to print out our flight boarding passes. Breakfast, then the final odds ‘n sods into the cases in readiness for our lift from Hotel Riga’s to the port.
Hotel Rigas was delightful. While only 2 stars, the room and balcony were enormous. But the bathroom this time was the size of 2 telephone booths and only room for one person due to an oversized awkwardly placed door which to close you practically had to stand on the toilet. Fortunately after 36 years of marriage, modesty is a concern long forgotten. The staff were the real standout with brother Panos and Christos the front office charmers. But the real star of the show was the housekeeper, who when we returned to the room after our first day out, had hung up our clothes, put things away in cupboards and done a through tidy up. It felt like mum had been in doing a Spring clean . I wanted to pay her one way fare to Fergie Street.
Ferry due to leave at 11.25am and arrived only 10 minutes late which was a relief. Systematic disembarkment for the Milos foot passenger and car arrivals followed by and orderly boarding by those leaving. This was in stark contrast to the Athens leaving fiasco necessitating dashing hither and thither avoiding a reversing oil tanker, taxis, buses, boxes on the wharf, cases, the passenger carrying a canary in a cage and a lot of agitated passengers. Piraeus Port Authority could do worse than do a study trip to a few islands for a few tips on traffic management.
Ferry went via nearby islands Sifnos & Serifos gradually filling on its way to Piraeus. Happily the sea was calm and the boat steady with the 4 hours passing quickly and uneventfully. Food onboard was also worthy of mention for the wrong reason. We shared a smoked turkey, cheese and mayo sandwich. The less said about that the better.
The TVs were showing some FINA Watersport competitions including the Greeks versus the Sth Koreans at water polo. It was Goliaths vs The Punes. The score of 13-2 representative of the physical strength imbalance. Chris was surprised the Punes didn’t turn tail and head straight back to Sth Korea when they caught sight of their opposition. Next on were the prissy-glittery-glammed-up teams of synchronised swimmers. We were half watching it (Chinese coming first followed by the Japanese, who we thought only average, then Ukraine) when the TVs changed to another station. Because all Greek discussion is loud and intense (and our Greek has not progressed beyond yassas and efcharistó) we had no idea whether it was the Midday Show, a regular news bulletin or some current affairs show. With no more synchronised swimming our books got 100% attention until we docked at 3.30pm.
Things were going too well for them to last. So they didn’t. With our ferry due at Piraeus at 3.30pm and our flight to Rome via Trieste due to depart at 7.10pm it was going to be a bit tight to take a train so we’d contacted a car transfer company which sends quotes. First quote arrived on Tuesday for £65 then decreased incrementally over the 3 days to £30. There seemed to be no time limit as to when you could accept the offer so we made sure the ferry was (a) going at all and (b) not delayed before we committed. As soon as we sailed we booked the transfer and emailed the driver to confirm the booking advising what ferry we were on expecting someone to be there when we arrived
Needless to say they weren’t. Port of Piraeus is not our happy place. Meanwhile my phone reconnected to the internet and I received a message from our niece asking if we were ok after hearing about the earthquake. I didn’t think anything more of it.
Meanwhile I put in a phone call to our organised driver who knew nothing of the booking and said he would call me back. Five minutes and no call back so I called him back only for it to ring out. Chris called him but the +44 English prefix probably gave it away cos he didn’t pick up that call either. So several calls to the company who didn’t seem be able to sort a driver resulting in my ire being raised about taking bookings that can’t be filled etc. We await a refund. But the bigger problem was time was on the wing and it was now 4.30pm so we went in search of a taxi.
Taxis in the port area were all pre booked so we found a taxi rank and asked the price. €80/$120!! Tell them they’re dreaming! Already pissed off about pre-booked driver no-show I got into a debate with the driver saying “We would take the taxi and trust the metre”. His bluff was ”It would be more expensive”. I countered “That would work better for you and we’ll take our chances”. His final response was “Take the bus lady” so we walked off in principle. (Think Chris reading my mood thought silence was his safest option.) I asked his mate also in the taxi queue but it was clearly a cartel cos he looked sheepish as he quoted the same which saved him losing face in front of his thieving mate. At this stage I thought my principles might cost us dearly with a missed flight (and I’d have a lot of apologising to do and a lot of extra Holmesglen shifts to cover the cost of lost flights) when we tried to flag down a taxi joining the rank who waved us off. But sometimes sticking to your guns pays off because a little modern Mercedes came around the corner driven by a taxi angel called Lorenzo who stopped as we waved him down. Quote €50. Deal! As he was loading the bags Lorenzo excitedly asked us if we’d felt the earthquake. So this explained the change of TV programming and the text message checking in on us. At around 2pm central Athens had experienced a 5.6 earthquake followed by aftershocks. We googled it and sure enough it was Athens’ first earthquake since the one in 1990 which resulted in 146 deaths and many more injured. Lorenzo who was driving through the city at the time said you don’t feel the movement of an earthquake when driving so he wasn’t aware what was happening. He said people were running out of buildings and dropping to the ground causing him to wonder if it was a terrorist attack. Fortunately there seemed to be no damage and deaths this time.
We were finally on our way to the airport with Lorenzo who determined the usually fast freeway route was jammed (we assumed as a response to the earthquake) taking 1.45 hours so the slower coastal route was a better option. The traffic around Piraeus was appalling but this bloke had the same traffic mindset as Chris....never, ever, ever sit in a traffic jam. We belted down bumpy narrow backroads made even narrower with cars parked on either side as we avoided the bottleneck around the port. The traffic was still heavily congested but our driver took every advantage of space by cutting in at the front of queues, forming extra turning lanes etc. It was quite the performance.
Not only was he determined to deliver us to the airport on time, he loved a chat. He was an Albanian in his mid 30’s married to a Greek with with two primary school aged children. He had been a semi professional soccer goalkeeper and along with taxi driving worked as a goal keeper coach. He proudly told us that only goal keepers can coach the skills of goal keeping. Lorenzo kept us entertained with stories saying when he was young he was popular because he wanted to play keeper whereas it was usually the fat kids who were lumped into that role because all the aspiring Ronaldos wanted to be the goal kicking stars. Another one we enjoyed was that his father used to regularly dink him 24 kilometres on the back of his pushbike in Albania to see a soccer match. The distance wasn’t the only issue as the roads built by the Italians post WW2 hadn’t received any attention from the communist government leaving them rutted, potholed and crumbling. Lorenzo and his dad’s bums must have been black and blue after those 48 kilometre round trips. He was also very interested in our lives so by the time we arrived at the airport at 5.50pm we were thoroughly relaxed with our faith in taxi drivers restored. We happily handed him €60 which he thought generous. We felt certain we were on the better end of that deal.
Flight to Trieste had a Rome stopover. The first leg to Rome left on time and was fine. After landing when the seat belt lights were switched the bloke beside me on the window side stood impatient to get off and leaned all over the top of me breathing heavily - he was not a small man. Usually I would get up too but with leg room being tight and row 24 being towards the back of the plane I stayed seated waiting for the 23 rows ahead to get themselves organised. This did not please bully boy next to me. After putting up with him literally right over the top of me panting I eventually stood at my middle seat. He took this as an opportunity to lean over me attempting to reach up into the luggage hold to drag his oversized case down. With the two irksome experiences at Piraeus still rankling I was not in the mood to be hassled. I refused to move and pushed back against him thwarting his attempts. When I finally moved out toward the aisle he reached over and dragged the case down telling me to move off before the people from the row in front. I told him in no uncertain terms I wasn’t moving until they were out of their seats in to aisle. Could excuse him if he was a peasant or had another flight to catch, but indeed he was well dressed and did not go to transit when we got off. That made 3 strikes with the no-show and thieving taxi driver so my patience was sorely tested.
Fortunately for everyone, probably most of all Chris who’s cage doesn’t generally get as rattled as mine, we had a spare seat for the next flight.
Landed at Trieste just before 11pm so had been on the go for 12 hours. Luggage arrived quickly making a dash to catch the 11.15pm train possible. We arrived at the station with the train pulling in. However we hadn’t had a chance to purchase tickets and with the machine caught in a loop, the train stopping for less than a minute and the guard less than helpful with advice we had to let it go. The only tip he gave us was not to buy the tickets on train as they were €50 more expensive that way (sounds to me like a euphemism for fine). Gave up on the train, taxis €60 (A$100) so not prepared to pay that. Instead we waited and caught the bus whose ticket machine also wasn’t working. No machine =no pay. Suited us. Took 45 minutes to get to TriesTe central station but enjoyed talking to a young helpful Slovenian man who had lived in Sydney for 3 months and a young Romanian woman who works as a purser on one of the small cruise boats that was hit by the big liner in Venice recently. Fortunately for her she was on leave at the time.
Grateful that Chris had booked our hotel not 5 minutes walk from Central Station. To top it all off our room stunk off cigarette smoke and the window shutters refused to open. Night manager couldn’t open them either so a quick move into neighbouring room which proved to be far nicer. Needless to say both knackered. Hope the travel Gods go gently on us tomorrow.
