"After Man" Research - Project Idea
After my Tutor suggested I read 'After Man', I took it upon myself to find a version of the book that I could download for free. To start with I skimmed the book to see what each chapter contained mainly to look at the creature designs within it. Once I had done that I then went on to look at some of the other chapters for inspiration to further develop my project idea theme that my creatures will be based on.
Natural selection interests me because it is an area of biology that I really enjoyed learning about back in school, so it would be fascinating to base my own Animation project around this area of evolution but with my own take on the idea when it comes to animation style.
Another area of the Natural World that also interests me is the Animal food chain which would be another interesting aspect to take into consideration when designing my creatures as I could base each individual creature on a different level of the food chain as well as looking at how each one could have evolved through evolution.
Above is an image containing designs of an animal called a "Rabbuck" showing how it would differ in appearance depending on the environment it was living in. I find these concept designs really inspiring as they show the sort of route I would like to go down for my project idea.
To conclude, I would like to create a variety of animals that have evolved over a long period of time due to natural selection, but still fit into the different layers of the food chain using a similar approach to the designs above but with a more 'cartoony' look to them as I would also like to base the art style on one used by an existing company that I would like to work for.

A species was called rabbuck!

I think I still post art, at this point I’m not sure.

The single biggest missed opportunity in After Man was having an entire group of rabbits who evolved to be analogous to deer, and not calling them “jackalopes”.
“Rabbucks”?? Come on, Dougal, the pun was right there.

So glad I finally got this - it’s a 2018 updated reprint of AFTER MAN by Dougal Dixon, detailing what today’s animals might evolve into in 50 million years if left untouched by humans. #animals #animal #nature #illustration #art #biology #evolution #speculativeevolution #speculativezoology #dougaldixon #afterman #rabbucks #1981 (at Christchurch, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxHbLxJgDoe/?igshid=dudpq8mtall2

Well after a bit of work the first group of creatures that I managed to renew is done, most of these are the biggest creatures of the book After Man, by Dougal Dixon, from which I could find measures at least... The changes included from the original sketches major details and proportions, as well coloration.
As it is remarkable as well is the size too, since this new version of the new chart will be bigger, at least double its predecessor compared above (The original main size on the chart), I realized that details were lost enough in the scale I was working which was "2 cm=1 m" so I decided to increase it to "4 cm=1 m", giving me a better quality to add detail, but of course with this may come that for good or bad when I finish the new chart this will probably be monstrously giant and heavy in comparison to its predecessor in terms of archive size...
Animal species shown here: Nightstalker, Common Rabbuck, Falanx, Giant Raboon, Long-Necked Gigantelope, Vortex, Desert Leaper, Woolly Gigantelope, Distarterops, Gigantelope, Fatsnake, Giantala, Zarander.

to be fair to the alleged microhorse, Calyrex is actually an arctic hare
Well I'll be! Course, upon learning this insightful fact, I'm now reminded of the Rabbuck, from Dougal Dixon's "After Man: A Zoology of the Future". I know, a weird thing to bring up, but hear me out: A Rabbuck is pretty much a Rabbit/Hare that had evolved to take the place of Deer (presumably of which humans may or may not hunted to extinction). In doing so, they now look like deer with rabbit heads, minus any antlers (sadly no future-Jackalope's). (There actually a LOT of creatures in that book which would make for great Pokemon designs IMO)

If Humans Went Extinct, What Would Happen To Animals?
A classic book of speculative biology gets an update and gets republished. "The mythological-looking creatures illustrated in the book seem to come out of a Tim Burton movie. There’s the rabbuck, a rabbit-like animal that has grown the size of a deer because it lives where there are no predators. Then, there’s the reedstilt — also called Harundopes virgatus — with a long, beaky snout and razor thin legs to snatch fish out of the water. And mountainous regions will be inhabited by the groath."
