En alguna ciudad alemana de la década del setenta, un hombre cincuentón arriba a su casa, acompañado de un joven que acaba de cumplir los veinte. Éste, de nombre Franz (Malik Zidi), no sabe por qué lo ha hecho: sólo sabe que estaba esperando a su novia y, de pronto, aparece pisando la vivienda del misterioso Léopold (Bernard Giraudeau), a quien le confiesa que no tiene buen sexo con su chica y que sueña con su padrastro vestido de gabardina y manteniendo relaciones sexuales con él. 

La relación, en un principio apasionada (a tal punto que el joven permanece en el lugar durante meses), deviene en algo más tóxico debido a la brutal manipulación psicológica del narcisista Léopold, que aprovecha cada mínimo gesto, real o malinterpretado intencionalmente, para caerle encima, demoliendo de a poco la autoestima de su joven amante. 

Dos figuras más se añaden a esta conflictiva historia de exacerbado erotismo: la novia de Franz, Anna (Ludivine Sagnier, a quien conocerás como la Campanita, o Tinker Bell, del “Peter Pan” de 2003), y Vera (Anna Levine), antigua amante de Léopold y adicta, como el resto de sus compañeros sexuales, al intenso placer con que éste la ha atrapado en su maraña maldita, rumbo a la decadencia final.

Queda claro que no es ésta una película para menores de edad y que la temática, más allá de lo sexual, reviste una complejidad que la hace interesante a todo análisis. El director François Ozon ha adaptado la obra teatral del alemán Rainer Werner Fassbinder, escrita a sus diecinueve años y titulada “Tropfen auf heiße Steine”, (”Gouttes d'eau sur pierres brûlantes” es el título original de su filme y “Water Drops on Burning Rocks”, en su versión anglosajona) y se ha valido sólo de cuatro intérpretes para narrar una historia, dividida en cuatro actos, sobre tres personajes que acaban sometiéndose, por amor y por deseo, a los egoístas designios de un ser ególatra y, quizás, psicótico.

The inscriptions on the graves were not like those I knew. Usually you see "Born 1918, died 1968" or "Born 1927, died 1975". But the dates on these graves read: 1970-72, or 1965-66, or 1954-57. No one here seemed to have been older than a couple of years. Some were even younger, some were just a few days old, others only a few hours. While I'm trying to figure out why this cemetery is so strange. I suddenly see a very old man in front of me. He's the gardener. I asked him, how he became so old when everyone else here died so young. He laughs, shakes his head and says "No. You're mistaken. The dates are not the duration of people's lives but the time they had a true friend."

Esta película se presentó en el Cine Lumiere en República Dominicana. Grupos conservadores destruyeron parte de las butacas del cine. Dato curioso es que un restaurante que sale en la película se llama Boca Chica.
