The novel tells the story of Divine, a drag queen who, when the novel opens, has died of tuberculosis and been canonised as a result. The narrator tells us that the stories he is telling are mainly to amuse himself whilst he passes his sentence in prison – and the highly erotic, often explicitly sexual, stories are spun to assist his masturbation. Jean-Paul Sartre called it "the epic of masturbation".

Divine lives in an attic room overlooking Montmartre cemetery, which he shares with various lovers, the most important of whom is a pimp called Darling Daintyfoot ("Mignon-les-Petits-Pieds" in French). One day Darling brings home a young hoodlum and murderer, dubbed Our Lady of the Flowers. Our Lady is eventually arrested and tried, and executed. Death and ecstasy accompany the acts of every character, as Genet performs a transvaluation of all values, making betrayal the highest moral value, murder an act of virtue and sexual appeal.

Carte blanche | Ghada Sayegh POUR LA PALESTINE, SIMPLE SOURIRE Ce fut un bel échange, constructif et sensible en compagnie de @ghada_sayegh qui nous a présenté et choisi trois courts métrages de Jocelyne Saab et en présence de belles personnes qui ont enrichi la discussion autour d’une histoire imagée chargée de résistance, d’humanité et de poésie. La Palestine est dans nos coeurs, nos écrits et nos Images. Nous tenons à remercier Mathilde Rouxel et l’association @jocelynesaabasso Photos prises par @aichabousninaa & @mehebaaziz « Filmant sans relâche près de quarante ans de conflits et de révolutions, au Liban comme sur d’autres territoires, le geste cinématographique de Jocelyne Saab puise toute sa force dans l’engagement qui l’anime, celui du don de soi. Entièrement vouée à rendre compte de l’Histoire du point de vue des victimes et des persécutés, elle l’a non seulement vécue et documentée avec une analyse politique fine et exigeante, elle a également réussi à y puiser l’essence de la révolution et de la résistance : la poésie. Celle-là même qu’évoque Jean Genet pour qui « il ne saurait y avoir de vraie révolution sans qu’une transformation n’affecte le rapport avec les êtres ». A la question qu’il se pose « Pourquoi je suis avec les Palestiniens ? », il répond : « ce monde serait sans importance si je n’entrevoyais pas déjà entre les êtres des rapports que je ne peux dire que poétiques. Où la propriété et le pouvoir seraient remplacés par le don, étant bien entendu qu’il n’y a de réel que le don de soi, c’est-à-dire de rien, en échange de rien. Simple sourire ». Voir les films de Jocelyne Saab aujourd’hui revient à y déceler ce simple sourire, que l’on perçoit dans l’humanité qui les traverse ». Black History Month - Cicely Tyson References to "Star of stage, screen and television" have been thrown around casually for years. Cicely Tyson managed those achievement when roles for Black women were rare and limited. She garnered both praise and awards for her work across genres. Tyson was renowned for playing strong Black women, which she could pull off with aplomb as she was a strong Black woman. Her career spanned seven decades, inspiring, as she was only getting warmed up in middle age. Born in Harlem to religious West Indian parents, her mother rejected her career until she witnessed her work first-hand. She worked her way through supporting roles in the 50s and 60s and proved the adage there are no small acting parts, only small actors as she shined in her roles. She joined fellow luminaries #MayaAngelou, #JamesEarlJones and #LouisGossettJr in the celebrated #offbroadway production of #JeanGenet's #TheBlacks Tyson's star ascended at the tender age of 48 in the film #Sounder. This was followed by her role as the title character in #TheAutobiographyOfMissJanePittman. Roles as #Binta in the iconic #Roots and as #CorettaScottKing in the 1978 #miniseries about #MLK rounded out the decade. There's far more than I can fit into this post (including surviving #MilesDavis). I encourage you to read on. That's a wrap for #BHM but stay tuned. From the publishers notes  “In the late summer of 1968, writers Terry Southern, William S. Burroughs, and Jean Genet were deployed by Esquire magazine to cover the Democratic Convention in Chicago. With photographer Michael Cooper and poet Allen Ginsberg inseparable parts of their coterie, the “fab 5” (as Michael Simmons dubs them in his introduction) were unflappable, capturing the calm and riding out the storm…”

Terry Southern’s original Esquire text “Grovin’ in Chi” is there in its entirety and Allen is quoted throughout, alongside ones by Abbie Hoffman, Jean Genet, Richard Seaver and others.
